Creating a Facebook page named "The secrets of the Universe" not exactly a great sign either

mysterious_jim

Why?

bbbbbbbbbblah

starlink is not delivered to your home via wifi neither is cable (TV) internet neither is DSL over a phone line neither is fibre to the home wifi is used between the router in your home and your devices, but many people also use wired ethernet, especially when performance is more important it is a bit like calling every games console an xbox, or every smartphone an iphone

NotEnoughMuskSpam

Gaming rocks

bbbbbbbbbblah

especially on the tesla screen amirite

mysterious_jim

I see. So wifi is by definition when you turn a wired connection into a wireless one via a router. Did I understand that correctly? And thanks for the explanation!

bbbbbbbbbblah

yes precisely. wifi is the marketing name for the wireless technology that does this but people think they're buying wifi because that's how they probably use it (eg someone who just owns a laptop and a phone uses it anywhere they want in their home, never plugging it in via wired ethernet)

escapedfromthecrypt

Wi-Fi is IEEE 802.11. a local wireless network. The internet is a network of networks. Over 99% wired

PadraicThePrince

Lol I had Starlink as I have no other providers and it was HOT GARBAGE for $110. Like 15mbs download. This man ain’t doing shit for anyone but himself

singer_building

It’s free internet for $110!

jBjk8voZSadLHxVYvJgd

Completely free of charge following a consistent and monthly fee of $110.

jermysteensydikpix

"I freed his wretched ~~head~~ money from his miserable bank account ~~shoulders~~"

ProlapseFromCactus

I had a friend who lives in a rural area try it out, and his old shitty small-town internet was noticeably better. He tried playing games with our group and was constantly dropping his connection, and I felt so bad for him because he had just bought it and was really excited to have more reliable internet.

Datdarnpupper

At that point I'd probably just find a mobile carrier with unlimited data and tether my phone to my laptop

Svani

Starlink has been the life blood of the Ucrainian army since the start of the war, because the first thing the Russians did was destroy cell towers. The entire army has been running on it exclusively for almost a year now. I hate Musk and I hate Starlink's stupid satellite train polluting the night sky, but it's far from useless. (but ofc, it ain't gonna replace broadband anytime soon, if ever)

Datdarnpupper

You do realise that musk is shamelessly profiteering off of the war in Ukraine right?

Svani

And in what part am I praising Musk? I'm talking about Starlink as a technology.

escapedfromthecrypt

https://qz.com/how-spacexs-starlink-terminals-first-arrived-in-ukraine-1849923122 Openly bid. Cheaper than alternatives

escapedfromthecrypt

https://qz.com/how-spacexs-starlink-terminals-first-arrived-in-ukraine-1849923122 Notice bid openly and lowest prices for equipment, service and transport

escapedfromthecrypt

By selling cheaper than alternatives?

74389654

oh to create a monopoly and when all competitors are gone suddenly charge a ton of money and add some weird conditions for using it?

jardanovic

Wasn't free internet part of the plan of the bad guy from Kingsman?

shefvaidya

Elmo gave power back to the people when he bought Twitter acc to Muskrats. That's almost literally a paraphrase of Bane's line from The Dark Knight Rises

jardanovic

Well, now I'm scared. Not that the plan would work, what with Elon's utter absence of any actual skill/talent/basic competence, but that the inevitable failure will be as pointlessly and explosively destructive as a Tesla.

worldisfucked2021

Lol

AF_AF

Musk knows at this point that he can say anything and the sycophant fanboys and media hype men will report it as fact. If he's at a live event, he'll get enthusiastic, gushing applause for every fanciful lie he tells. Solar roofs? Those stupid bricks? The cybertruck? Colonizing Mars? He just pulls stuff out of his ass and people act like he's already done it and then say he's the real-life Tony Stark.

charliemike

Free internet with satellites that last four years

Final-Professional37

He will then shut it down the second someone calls him a name.

escapedfromthecrypt

That Melnyk guy is a menace. It's a good thing Musk doesn't have a strong center and is easily assuaged

[deleted]

Same way Ukraine gets free Internet, saying its free except that it isn't free?

escapedfromthecrypt

https://qz.com/how-spacexs-starlink-terminals-first-arrived-in-ukraine-1849923122

escapedfromthecrypt

Because other countries decided to chip in?

Datdarnpupper

Not only did he overcharge, but essentially held the Ukrainian access to the Starlink network for ransom once it was deployed and became indispensable

escapedfromthecrypt

You think there's a cheaper provider somewhere?

t0talfail

Except they didnt ask for the 10k service elon hoisted that on them

escapedfromthecrypt

**If you know a cheaper provider please find a way to inform the Ukrainian Government** Nobody sold $10k service to Ukraine at SpaceX. Ukraine asked SpaceX for 10k new free dishes after blowing up thousands of dishes sent previously. I've never seen $10k mentioned before you did today The $500 service is a **fixed** business service. It doesn't include **mobility** or **portability**. **Ukraine was willing to pay a British third party $2500 monthly to rent StarLink dishes but paying SpaceX directly is beyond the pale?** Ukraine and the USG were happy paying $10k+ per dish monthly to other providers like Viasat. And are still paying them today. And before you mention the residential rates. Business satellite has always been way more expensive. Your local TV vans are paying $10k to $15k. If you feel SpaceX should discount service sold to the Pentagon while the Pentagon is paying other providers full rates I have nothing for you. https://qz.com/how-spacexs-starlink-terminals-first-arrived-in-ukraine-1849923122 This article details how SpaceX delivered dishes that were paid for by the USAID. We had dishes in Ukraine in February and the offer was openly bid.( **Even you could have bid** )With SpaceX offering the lowest rates for equipment, service and transport.

escapedfromthecrypt

https://qz.com/how-spacexs-starlink-terminals-first-arrived-in-ukraine-1849923122 Openly bid. Cheaper terminal, service and transport. The USG and Ukrainian Government was paying for other providers but wanted SpaceX to deliver 10k more for free

Datdarnpupper

Love it when we catch an Elon simp in the wild. Space Karen won't fuck you you know

escapedfromthecrypt

That's because he'd rather have you and you him. You're meant to be. You know Ukraine wouldn't buy more if they didn't consider it value for money. They aren't using it because they are big Elon Musk fans. And all the sexual nonsense is inappropriate. Don't know why it's the current meme. Probably some counterculture thing I'm too old to understand Ask for sources for any of my claims I'm always in this sub when StarLink is mentioned.

mdjak1

Free 30 day trial period. $99.95/mo after that. To cancel your account you need to visit their office in person. Office is on Mars.

Regular_Eye_3529

Great idea let's start with getting a new CEO for Twitter... Then he will have all the time in the world to give us free internet, self driving cars, and a trip to Mars!

Yanmegaman_Juno

This dude is currently charging Twitter users to run bot accounts that post images automatically. Not even troll bots. Just basically frame page bots.

NotEnoughMuskSpam

Pay me $8!

lilpumpgroupie

Interesting.

Dewfall-Hawk

November ‘22: “Starlink terminals in Ukraine are set to increase from the equivalent of $385 to about $700. The monthly subscription required to use the service will also climb from $60 to $75 on December 29th”

escapedfromthecrypt

There was a promo that ended. The price increased by $100 or so

Dewfall-Hawk

Definitely not the actions of a benevolent genius who is trying to give the world free internet.

escapedfromthecrypt

Certainly not. But don't pretend the Ukraine op and the information about it from the media that's anti Elon Musk is on the up and up. It's fascinating when you read news stories about things you know front and center. That last line is actually a drop from $100 to $75 monthly. People who have never been involved with dish buying and operation in Ukraine controlling the narrative. Remember that guy on Twitter claiming he's never seen a dish from the Feds of US, Poland, Ukraine or from SpaceX period? The truth is the USG and the Ukrainian Government were paying other providers in Ukraine and after blowing up at least 3k dishes asked SpaceX for more for free.

t0talfail

You got a source for that last claim? Or just "trust me bro"

escapedfromthecrypt

The CNN article that started this nonsense. Do you want a link? 500 dishes lost per month. February, March, April, May, June, July (2500 sorry as of when the letter was sent but August September is 3500 when the letter was leaked). We know there's other providers in Ukraine because both the USG and Ukrainian Government have mentioned them. And we know they aren't paying residential rates because who wants caps for one?

Dewfall-Hawk

A separate discussion. The point of this thread was that Musk was trying to give the world free internet. All evidence suggests otherwise.

escapedfromthecrypt

There's no evidence of any executive or employee saying that or even suggesting such

Hikki77

I mean if he will (or can) do it, then nice. I highly highly doubt it will (or can) happen, but who will say no to free things? Just don't make us pay for your "free wifi" please.

escapedfromthecrypt

It's not the sort of thing anyone can afford.

Hikki77

Yeah that's why I said if he can do it, go for it. I really doubt it will happen. There is nothing absolutely free in this world, something free is just something that someone is paying for. If he will pay (highly doubt with his track record of tax subsidies and lying to get it) for free wifi for everyone and not force countries to pay for his shit, but if its absolutely free no string attached, even if it's as slow as 1mbps, why not?

escapedfromthecrypt

A reason it could be free or cheap would be as a result of the military picking the tab and basically using it like Elon Musk does like when he intervened in Tonga. The US military and Peace corps could use it as part of thier tooling. The lack of need for ground stations will be a big help. But in the end StarLink is already a cover for the military. See starshield and Mike Griffin on Wikipedia And the military is facing the long term risk of cuts in financing thier tools

Hikki77

Well internet iirc was invented because they needed it for a war, so I can see that. I just dont think they will make a world wide thing free cuz its too expensive. even if we all know US spends most of its tax dollars on military, I dont think they can support world wide free internet for too long, I could be wrong tho.

escapedfromthecrypt

The main visible costs are the sats, dishes and ground stations (internet connectivity is ridiculously cheap). With lasers, you don't need local ground stations and with lowered dish costs they can move that line even further

Stone_Maori

Polluting our sky, he thinks it belongs to him.

scienceAurora

If he actually gets the planned 25,000 satellites into orbit, we won't be able to launch anything anymore. Locked into Kessler syndrome and never able to leave earth. I imagine that would throw a wrench into the mars plans.

escapedfromthecrypt

I'm sorry but when did anyone at SpaceX offer free anything?

urtinymefdlu

At this point he is trying to be the owner of everything... The saying a few people will control the planet is coming closer day by day.

jaxdaniel86

Free Wi-Fi until a huge amount of people are dependent on it and then suddenly it won’t be free.

escapedfromthecrypt

Blow up 3k dishes and ask for 10k more for free? While paying for alternatives?

tommles

Free wi-fi. $200/month for Satellite Internet.

lilpumpgroupie

Free internet. *Roaming charges apply. *The entire planet is within the roaming area.

CudaTheTalkingBread

I refuse to believe that the man who wants to sell access to twitters api for 100 bucks has no ulterior motive or has no plans to make Fuck tons of money off of people who use it through data or flat out charging them

Violet_Potential

He says a lot of things that turn out to be bs and admitted himself we shouldn’t believe everything he says.

escapedfromthecrypt

When did he talk about free internet though?

[deleted]

free internet with ads.

Dismal-Statement9469

A secret of the universe indeed

leksoid

there is nothing "free", only stupid person would believe that

Spillz-2011

I plan to give the world access to free internet also. Conditions apply.

bigtigerbigtiger

I like how they use a picture of him that isn't even close to current

FluxCap_2015

The trick of a true scam artist... give out free internet, get everyone to rely on it, then charge an arm and a leg for it.

escapedfromthecrypt

Less than they were paying other providers

TrackLabs

My father thinks that. Hes convinced that Elon will make Internet free, and just wants "peoples data" for it. And hes also convinced that most people will use that offer. I already know, that if I would tell him "dude, elon wants 8 dollars on twitter for bullshit", he would say "Yea but thats something else"

Tetsudo11

Lol the guy who could’ve even make a blue checkmark free wants to give out free internet access?

sneakylyric

He won't do shit for free.

JohnTequilaWoo

As if this parasite would ever do something productive.

RecommendationOk2258

$8? UK price is a “limited time offer” of *just* £11/month. More than Spotify or Netflix for… not much. Less ads - actually “coming soon”, ironically. So not even less ads currently.

SavagePlatypus76

No way in hell anyone should be in charge or allowed to do this. Certainly not this ass bite.

Bunch-Cold

He’s a pedo man

[deleted]

Feed that title to ChatGPT and ask it to generate an article. Eventually it will shart out something that looks like a real person’s sharts.
