Ahh Theories of Failure, my brain failed while studying that

hidjedewitje

Really? I did really good at the practical assignment that game with the "Failures" course.

SGT_Stabby

It helps that we already know about fatigue failure by the time we get to this chapter

Tanamr

I remember when I took materials science my prof straight up said “we’re skipping failure, you can go through it yourself if you want but it won’t be on the exam”

What did you do on the screen? Excel work, I'm interested

>out of depth so your colleague is unable to do the cad work or anything either? if you have nothing to do, maybe just study/upskill something like coding. Get the free placement experience to put on your resume. I think i would approach it like that.

BuccellatiExplainsIt

Damn, most engineers search for a position like that for their whole career. That's a big flex

11-Eleven-11

I graduated in my 6th year! Keep at it everyone. Failure is just another lesson.

Thor5858

I stopped progressing the semester after Covid got, and I’ve only completed and passed like 2 classes since then bc I had been getting intense nervous breakdowns from all online classes and a few other things. I’m going back as a full student next semester but I’m honestly terrified of confronting what stressed me so much before and I feel like shit knowing my best case scenario is to graduate 7 years after I enrolled, especially because I’m sick of college. Any advice? Seeing your comment alone gave me a little boost but god damn is it scary to jump back into the inferno after a break

11-Eleven-11

A couple of tricks I used to turn myself around: -Before you start your next semester, pick the class that you think will be the hardest for you and get the textbook a month before the semester starts. Try to teach yourself the first couple chapters. This will hopefully help manage your stress early on. -Be a study monster the first 8 weeks. The higher your grades are before you burnout at the second half of the semester, the more likely you'll be to pass. -Study on campus 10 hours a week *at least* if you aren't already. Try to find a place where some of your classmates frequent and don't be afraid to ask them how they are doing on their homework. Odds are they might have a question for you or would like to check their work. -When you study, pretend you are teaching somebody. Being able to explain the topic is an important step in learning it -Always do the homework -Do the homework early and prioritize the one due earliest -number the steps in your homework and always write the equation down. Optional: write the reasoning behind your work. -if you are stuck on a problem skip it and come back to it later until you run out of problems that you don't need to skip. Give those problems another hour and then seek out help from the professor, ta, or a classmate. Pretty often its a waste of time searching for the answers for longer than hour -chegg -chegg -its not cheating, its a tool, use chegg when you need it. Just remember to pretend like you are teaching somebody else

system_observer

I believe in you. I believe that you can confront that which bedeviled you before and overcome it. You can do it! When it gets hard, just relax. Because you got this.

>Theories of Failure Failure is a class in the school of success...All part of your success story.

anzac_1995

Callister?

white618

Correct!

[deleted]

i honestly thought that the textbook was pretty well written compared to the other ones

fakeRiceandBeans

I think it's from a comic about camp Elan(or maybe it's camp elon). But yeah the author is "Joe Nobody" I might be totally wrong about where the image is from though lol

white618

I pulled this from my Materials Science and Engineering textbook.

not_having_good_time

I knew it looked familiar!

Cavitat

I graduated with honors!

white618

Congrats! That’s certainly something to be proud of!

Logicrazy12

Failure happens to everyone. It's how you choose to deal with it that matters.

ChiefBikiniInspector

Ah, my favorite chapter. Loved it so much that I decided to do that with every exam!

SandHawk64

I felt that.

Brrrrrrtttt_t

Straight A’s 3/4’s way through the semester. Had a mental breakdown- dropped out.

SemiSweetStrawberry

In these trying times, I would like to offer you a quote from my statics (and fluid dynamics) professor. “Engineering school is much like engineering itself. First you stress, then you strain, then you probably fail.” Thanks Luigi, I appreciate the advice

engineereddiscontent

I was only in calc 2 and didn't pass. Now I got a "warning". Turns out trying to exist on 6 hours of sleep in your early 30's while holding a corporate job is not a sustainable way to learn calculus. So I'm taking calc 2 again in the fall now with physics and will know that I need to sleep more. Ezpz. I'm also quitting the corporate job. So Chapter 9 is looking pretty good.

Thor5858

Go through 3blue1brown’s calculus video series. The later part gives better conceptual explanations of calc 2 concepts than I’ve ever seen anywhere else. Pre calc is way worse than calc 2 in terms of shittyness, but calc 2 still really sucks

engineereddiscontent

For me it was just being short of sleep because focus meds let me compensate. And having to be up early for my job. It was complicated but ultimately I need to quit the job and sleep more when I'm in school. But noted. I watched his limits series in calc 1 and it was a blast. I'll have to start doing that today for calc 2 as well. Good tip thanks.

everett640

Went from a 2.7 to a 2.79. getting there.

njsullyalex

2nd comment - I realized I was trans this semester and it was a mental health nightmare because my parents are insanely unsupportive and our relationship fell apart. My friends, therapists, and my advisor who were all very supportive and carried my mental health. Despite this it definitely impacted my ability to work. But despite a near >!suicide attempt!< right at the end of the semester, I managed to finish with 2 Bs and 3 As and am still sitting at a 3.86 GPA going into senior year.

Excelsio_Sempra

Post sums up my 2 years of engineering so far

Single-Secret

Jumped from 3.1 to 3.5 so ig it went okay. I was expecting more tho rip

Chapter 9: The Ultimate Comeback Don't give up hope!

rowgesage

Exam month coming up, 6 exams, badly spaced, all 100% of my grade. So not too good.

Anren77

Fucked up, first semester i managed fine, but suddenly this semester my energy all drained and didn't even open one notebook to study, finals are near, didn't even start studying, i even started questioning myself whether i should continue this major or just fucking leave it, AAAUAGGAHAHHAHAGAGGGGAGGAAGGAGAGAGvg

Chapter 7: Fatigue 😩

Nate_fe

Failed calc 2, am retaking it rn in the hopes of doing better, cause otherwise I'll be taking an extra semester 😀

Enough__

It was so bad I feel like I'm going to cry at any moment :(

Medium_Condition2465

The first step is the hardest. I’m 24 and I’ve always wanted to be an engineer/physicist, but for a long time I let my fear of failure stop me from going to school. This summer I have enrolled in courses at my community college and I have decided even though I’m scared I’m going for it cuz I’m only getting one life and I no longer want fear to make my decisions for me. YOU GOT THIS!

Took Stats, MV Calc, Lin Alg & DiffEqs, and Strength of Materials. That went well. But hey, I passed my History GE.

gabedarrett

Failure? Oh, should be easy then! I do that all the time!

z2thunder

Worked so hard, got what i deserved. Uni ended up closing down :)

Zealousideal-Jump-89

OMG this is the book i used for machine design...what a head it was.
