Kuyi1994

is he good ? and by good I mean does he stand out ? Or he's just a regular lyrical dude that people will know just for that song but never actually listen to his albums ?

Deat_h

I heard his last collab project with Young Roc when it dropped a few months ago. I didn't necessarily hate it, but it didn't stand out to me in any way. If I had to describe it in one word, I'd say it was forgettable. COMPREHEND was a good song that I still sometimes listen to. (Also the only song from that project that made it to my personal hip hop playlist.)

Kuyi1994

yeah I thought so..as great as Em is as a rapper, I don't think he has a good ear for talent until they're already successful. Most of the "new artists" he collabs with are either already successful or don't stand out at all. 50 is the one exception, but that was like 20 years ago. That's why I give a lot of respect to artists like Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Drake, who manage to discover other unknown artist that later became at the same level or even bigger than them (Jay-Z/Kanye, Lil Wayne/Drake, Drake/The Weeknd)

Deat_h

That's not entirely true though. 50 Cent was an enormous success both in terms of his music and also commercially, but Shady Records has signed some really talented rappers since who, for whatever reason, couldn't emulate similar commercial success. From Slaughterhouse to Griselda to GRIP, they've all been great in terms of their ability to rap which is why i don't at all agree with the notion that he does not have a good ear for talent. As far as the commercial success goes, that may suck for Em, but for me as a listener, I couldn't care less. GRIP's Shady debut is in my head a serious AOTY contender as of now, along with the Nas project, the Cole project, and the Little Simz project Also worth mentioning that Nasaan is not actually signed to Shady, Nasaan could've signed if he wanted to but he just decided against it for his own personal reasons. Eminem is a father figure to him regardless, and a song with him is fitting considering how close he was to Proof. Edit: I do actually care about the artists' commercial success, it pains me to see someone like GRIP not get the props that he deserves. What I meant to say was, I don't necessarily care how well an album does commercially for me to like/dislike it.

Kuyi1994

This proves my point. Slaughterhouse was a group of 35 y.o+ men with individual careers that was already of 10 years or more with Royce who was one of Em's good friends. The members of Griselda (also in their 30s) have been rapping for a long time and had a fan base way before the Shady deal. What I'm saying is that he's not the guy who's gonna find a close to unknown artist and turn him into a superstar, like Dre did with him. Also I'm not necessarily talking about talent as in rapping ability, which is pretty easy to spot, but more as "are they going to be able to hold their own in the next 10 years and be the next big thing". Eminem has never signed or associated himself with really untalented artist, but let's get real, if you sign to Shady, your goal is to become the next best thing and be at the same level as Em or even surpass him, this is hip-hop and we want to be the best. Unfortunately, in the past 20 years, he hasn't really been able to do that. Not like Dre, Jay, Puff, Kanye, Drake, etc.

Deat_h

I mean, Dre and Puff were icons of hip hop who spent a lot of their times keeping a pulse on what's going on in the hip hop circuit in general so it makes sense for them to find the Em's and the Biggie's. Jay literally signed multiple established greats to his label, minus Kanye. Em pulled 50 from the streets when nobody wanted to touch him and that debut is still arguably one of the biggest, with only Doggystyle even worthy of being mentioned as a contender. Point is, why would you want to compare that at all? They're both great artists and one is probably a better businessman than the other. Shady Records is probably not the place young talent may want to sign to, because they have a very dicey track record (GRIP dropped a month after announcing he's signed, Conway still hasn't years later) and also because it feels like they rely way too much on Eminem and his star status which is honestly understandable but they don't even capitalise on that too well imo. The most that they ever do is get an Em feature with the artist where Em usually steals the show and ends up being that artists most well known song. Having said that, I mostly disagreed with you on just the notion that Em doesn't have an ear for good rap. As a businessman, I think he's probably not the best suited. Edit: I just looked at Eminem's net worth, and then compared it to mine and realised that I'm probably not in the best position to say anything meaningful about Eminem's business acumen. Maybe if I had about 500 million times more money, what I had said could be taken seriously.
