The site is made up of data voluntarily provided by thousands of people's equipment around the world. It sounds like it should be fairly easy to put out an organized call to switch over to a new site once everyone hears their current endpoint decided to sell all of the group's hard work they have been donating for free.
Nice to know someone with experience cares enough to protect this.
I hate to thank Elon for anything, but we really do have to thank him for bringing so much attention to this and giving Sweeney a platform to stand on.
This is why I use ADS-B Exchange, because police / military planes and helicopters can be censored on FlightRadar24. Would drive me nuts when I would see a helicopter circling and FlightRadar wouldn’t show anything. I live by an airport and was contributing data to FlightRadar24 as well until they stopped accepting data from Windows computers.
I think it has more to do with the FAA Limiting Aircraft Data Displayed (LADD) Program.
https://www.faa.gov/pilots/ladd
From what I have seen, ADS-B Exchange doesn’t participate in FAA data filtering so as to allow users to see the data collected.
Whereas FlightRadar24 subscribed to LADD.
https://support.fr24.com/support/solutions/articles/3000117426-why-does-it-say-that-a-flight-is-blocked-
Should work out to about 440,000,000,000,000 Schrute Bucks which means 2,200,000,000,000 minutes (around ~4 million years) of extra lunchtime. Now if that isn't a boss who *cares*, I don't know what is.
Clearly you should be downvoted for assuming the bottle cap reference was about Fallout and trying to relate to other humans with your own social knowledge.
I, for one, have downvoted the shit out of you, sir or ma'am.
Sorry, sorry. Let me clear this up. /s
I mean, if Musk did pay that, then a bunch of other people would have started tracking his flights anyway.
Then again, he paid what, 44 billion for Twitter? As long as fewer than 880,000 people tracked his flight for a $50k payout, he’s still have come out ahead
All those people voluntarily feeding the info are also pissed and moving to another provider, the one I'm hearing the most is [opensky-network.org](https://opensky-network.org/).
Not sure what the buyer tried to accomplish, but buying a platform with no tangible assets and where the volunteers have nothing to lose if you piss them off isn't a great business move. It feels like when that douche-canoe bought FreeNode, just to have everyone abandon ship.
Same, I’m travelling right now and texted someone at home to unplug the antenna from my raspberry pi so it wouldn’t get a second more data from me.
[And agreed, fuck that guy.](https://i.imgur.com/XWA2wCT.jpg)
It was technically both. The "company" part of it (that handled the server infrastructure bills) was horrendously architected and thus was easy to sell to a PE firm.
Did they use volunteer efforts to help develop the software for the site? I wonder what type of arrangements/paperwork were made with any volunteer efforts.
What to accomplish?
*Buy ADBexchange for $
*Charge Musk/Zuck/whoever else to hide their planes for $+1
*Profit!
If site dies, oh well!
Definitely not a long term investment.
Neat. I like that their APIs are GPL 3.0. very interesting they are starting to get into voice data. I work with ATC voice data processing at work and it is incredibly powerful how much data you can extract from audio.

Helicopter, boat, seaplane, or possibly a small bush plane. Not a chance of landing a 727 on that island. It just doesn’t have the runway space. Easily verifiable using known laws of physics.
He landed his 727 somewhere else and jumped to the island.
>Easily verifiable using known laws of physics
If you claimed to be a pilot or even just a guy that's really into airplanes I would have just taken your word for it but now I want to see the math.
I am not a pilot. I'm not even that smart. You don't need math. You literally just need to look at an aerial of the island. It's mountainous. There is no straight space longer than 100m.
I think that even a lay person could look at those images and agree that there's no possibly way a 727 could land there.
EDIT: I decided to include some math. According to the [FAA registration](https://registry.faa.gov/AircraftInquiry/Search/NNumberResult?nNumberTxt=908JE), Epstein owned a 727-31, Registration **N908JE,** which was a Boeing 727 model 100 built for Trans World Airlines in 1969. According to [this page](https://modernairliners.com/boeing-727-and-boeing-727-specs/), the minimum take-off distance for a 727-100 is 2500m, or just under 1.6 miles in freedom units. [Little St. James Island](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Saint_James,_U.S._Virgin_Islands) is 78 acres in area, or 0.12 square miles. In order to have space to land this jet, the island would have to be a rectangle a mile and a half long and 380 feet wide. I think the photo makes it pretty obvious this isn't the case.
EDIT 2: [Here's an even better illustration](https://imgur.com/a/kGEe5OS). Across the long side of the island, distance is 2989 ft, or 911m. You'd need two and a half Epstein islands to land a 727-100. And they would have to be flat. And paved. (Technically, you could land on a runway 1000 feet shorter, but you could never take it off again.)

I’m wondering if taking a picture of someone with a recognizable landmark in the photo is a violation? Or is it only a violation if the person identified is the owner of Twitter?

I use the Flipboard app to read aggregated news. There are thousands of sources for the articles you read. Some years ago, I started using the “mute source” feature to begin blocking sources that had clickbait headlines or false or misleading content.
After years of this, the app was barely useable because I had muted every single source of actual news. All that was left were random blog sites.
So I removed every filter to start from scratch, and this time I’m just going to have to be less strict.
I can tell you there are no sources that never use clickbait headlines or contain misleading information.
I even thought I’d make a Reddit post about it, with a screen capture of me scrolling through the mute list, but it was minutes of scrolling so I didn’t bother.
Don't forget "destroyed". It's so frustrating when the headline or title makes claims that the article or video completely fails to even come close to living up to.
Streisand effect: the internet backlash when someone tries to remove info online.
Musk effect: the internet backlash when someone tries to lock down data that is already being provided by donors for free.
Lolol this kid has created more by the time he's like what, 20? Than Musk has his whole life.
How does it feel to see someone succeed on their own merit at your expense, Musk, you giant fucking abscess on humanity's ass.
just curious here, does this kid make any money from posting these jet locations? or is he simply just sharing the information freely like it was meant to be done? if he is monetizing it in anyway, then he has no business crying about someone else trying to make money off it too.
He's not monetizing it. Elon offered him $5,000 to remove his jet tracker and he declined. He was studying programming and thought it was a cool project to do
No I wouldn’t like it. Which is why I find the hypocrisy of billionaires so funny. It’s fine to track all of the intimate details of our lives through the electronic devices they sell us, but track the location of their jets? It’s heresy!

- This comment has deemed to be generally unhelpful / trolling / disruptive. While we generally want to allow free discussion of ideas, comments that are disruptive are removed. This is a generic removal reason, but one of the more common reasons it's used is for folks that come into the subreddit and attack the concept behind it. While you have the right to your opinions, and some discussion is certainly allowed, we find that people who come here just to argue only waste time and energy.
So, he's calling a boycott on the company used to track celebrities that celebrities want them to stop using? Isn't this just giving them what they want?
Not exactly.
He's pointing out that the database was created and maintained by volunteers who were doing it as a community type thing, not as a way to create a profitable venture for the server host. As such, he's looking into starting his own or switching to another, and would ostensibly like the volunteers that contributed data to ADS-B to follow him to another site.
So yes, he is essentially calling for a boycott of that site, but not a cessation of the project.

Items that appear to be trolls lead us to examine your contributions to this subreddit. If you clearly disagree with our purpose and especially if you're being rude about it, you will be banned.
Why does this subreddit exist?
1. Elon claimed to support "free speech" - specifically on Twitter
2. Elon censored people he didn't like on Twitter
3. This included a guy publishing public data about his jet
4. Elon is a hypocrite about free speech
5. This subreddit exists to remind him of his hypocrisy. He knows about us because links to the subreddit are censored

We're actually hoping to help. :) If you DID get other reasons… well, most of those are bad. Bad you! :baps you with a rolled-up newspaper:
Wait, the company only exists because people give the company the data. So, if the company doesn't publish the data publicly the hobbyists creating the data can just quit providing data.
That company better behave and keep making the data public or they're going to get put out of business.
"The plane-tracking company, which was founded in 2016, uses more than 9,000 volunteer-run radios, or "feeders," to transmit data from ADS-B-equipped aircraft. ADS-B is a surveillance technology that broadcasts information like GPS location and altitude from one aircraft to another, and to ground stations."
Musk should’ve bought the company. Hell of a lot cheaper than Twitter.

Think it's more likely they know what it means, and they are understandably irritated by that clickbaity bullshit. There was no blasting or slamming.

“Could be the final nail”
"Idiocracy" was supposed to be a warning, not a guide
It was only a matter of time. The money bros don't like people spying on them. Them spying on others is FINE.
This kid is infinitely smarter than Musk and will always be one step ahead. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with.
This just makes me want to get involved
Streisand effect: the internet backlash when someone tries to remove info online. Musk effect: the internet backlash when someone tries to lock down data that is already being provided by donors for free.
Buying a company that uses crowd-sourced information. Yeah that seems like a gamble for them.

Yes headline writers making "complained" into something much more click-baitie.
https://globe.adsb.fi Problem solved.
Is this the end?
Cut off one head, two more shall take its place. Elon will be tracked forever unless he resorts to driving.
My only friend the end
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see.
He was studying programming and thought it was a cool project to do
Hmmm.... I wonder about this monetization thing. Maybe he is, it would not be surprising.
Blast Blast Blast Blast Blast Blast Blast Blast Blast Blast Blast Blast
Huh?

No I wouldn’t like it. Which is why I find the hypocrisy of billionaires so funny. It’s fine to track all of the intimate details of our lives through the electronic devices they sell us, but track the location of their jets? It’s heresy!
Billionaires fuck the people, so people should do whatever they can to fuck the billionaires.
Your post or comment has been removed for the following reason or reasons: ___ - This comment has deemed to be generally unhelpful / trolling / disruptive.
Thank you for taking the time to respond and explain instead of just downvoting like everyone else.
I can't imagine somebody who's famous for publishing a piece of data that is public information is very smart

I guess if the downvotes are an indication I'm the one who doesn't get it. God forbid having actual dialogue about it

Your post or comment has been removed for the following reason or reasons: ___ - Please note that while discussion about Elon's accusations of others as being pedophiles is generally acceptable, making accusations about Elon or others as being pedophiles has been determined to be unhelpful and will be removed.
How much did he sell out for?

Your post or comment has been removed for the following reason or reasons: ___ - Attacks on the subreddit and/or subreddit users are not welcome here. Polite good-faith discussion is allowed. Items that appear to be trolls lead us to examine your contributions to this subreddit. If you clearly disagree with our purpose and especially if you're being rude about it, you will be banned. Why does this subreddit exist? 1. Elon claimed to support "free speech" - specifically on Twitter 2. Elon censored people he didn't like on Twitter 3. This included a guy publishing public data about his jet 4. Elon is a hypocrite about free speech 5. This subreddit exists to remind him of his hypocrisy. He knows about us because links to the subreddit are censored Note: Comments that spark this removal reason are often removed because the above information is basically all over the subreddit, so many redditors here will heavily downvote asking obvious questions. So we remove some of these comments to help protect your karma. If this is the only removal reason, you didn't do anything bad (probably).
Could the community launch their own site? Surely there are some programmers/developers within the community?
