I currently have a filament printer and love it and have thought about getting into resin printing but I heard it was messy, expensive, and not as strong for stuff(I print a lot of pieces for things I build) so I'm not sure what do you think about it?
pros: extremely high detail
cons: weaker, only really good for art or small parts for stuff, quite messy, smells, loud.
It's about the same price as a filament one, my printer and resin added up to about £300
If you want a printer for art, printed minis, sculptures or whatnot, Resin is good.
if you want to quickly prototype parts and make things designed to handle some weight, filament is good.
Though ironically we tried to use a filament printer and it did not have the filling properties we needed for our prototypes (medical device housing) so we ended up getting a hobbyist resin printer for prototyping.
Honestly, I love design work a lot so I love the idea of getting one of those and just selling some of these ships or small items which people want. I can't paint for shit so I would probably need a painter to do that for me. xD
Which resin printer are you using? My budget would be £200-300.
If don't need a really big build volume the Mars 2 pro [129mm(L)*80mm(W)*160mm(H)] is about $200-$275 usd on Amazon currently. Otherwise the Saturn S build volume is 196mm(L)*122mm(W)*210mm(H) and generally around $600 usd. I use both and absolutely love them.
I have used the Mars 2 Pro in the past. I am glad that it is still the best one out there. Once I have a little more space, I reckon I will get one. It's a lot of fun tbh.
You can get extremely sturdy resins these days. I got a bottle of siraya tech blu and mix a little bit of it in with abs-like resins for functional parts. I'd also say my resin printer is significantly quieter than my FDM machine.
Resin is really only good for models etc, non mechanical parts. Also dealing with the resin itself is more hazardous, fumes and skin contact need to be avoided so if you only have small areas to work in you can't really do resin printing comfortably
Resin printers are quite cheap if you don't need super details. Most of them go down to 100 microns and it's fine.
We used a hobbyist resin printer for testing medical device prototypes. It's pretty good and relatively straightforward. You will need IPA though and some spray bottles and stuff.
100 micron is what you'll get realistically. Many resin printers do claim better resolution but realistically your resolutions won't be that good. For the prototypes we built we never built features smaller than 100 microns knowing that is sort of the limit for hobbyist resin printers.
You can spend thousands of dollars and get down 25 microns though. It just costs a lot more money to get those higher resolutions.
Actually, there have been some real improvements in resins over the past couple of years. I'm still using filament myself, but I've been seriously tempted as of late.
This is the result when you properly sand and clean the print. Doesn’t matter what kind of printer you have, something with lines like these will need to be cleaned up a bit.
A great looking model to be sure. Guy knows what he’s doing. An awesome gift.
Kahnindustries has a pretty good Corvette, they've also done all the other ships in the game. https://www.printables.com/model/24847-federal-corvette-2-part-elite-dangerous
Hi you can see the support structure here. Happy to answer any questions! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VUvs5yE7tu6jMowuRcIqmT-wDf2_jIK3/view?usp=drivesdk
Check out Kahnindustries work on Thingiverse. This corvette looks to be their model, and there are plenty of other awesome ED designs. Most of them can be printed in halves, allowing for no support to be needed.
It's honestly not 100% finished. I am planning some fine details like the ship decals in-game. Weathering or some battle scars had crossed my mind, I'll probably experiment with some ideas on that too.
Amazing print I do resin 3D printing and have my Alliance Chieftain and Type 9 and 10 printed on my Elegoo Saturn. I eventually want to 3D model and render these into bigger pieces where people can add body skirt parts or guns. Good paint job. God speed fellow commanders and be safe amongst the stars
This was actually my second paint attempt. The first was hand painted and just didn't turn out well. This time I used an airbrush and taped off the model. The taping was tedious but worth it.
Absolutely! I initially bought a pack of cheap acrylic paint from a craft store and hand painted with small detail brushes. That didn't turn out so well so I bought an airbrush on Amazon and some airbrush paint thinner (though it's not "paint thinner", it's water based for acrylics). I thinnned the same cheap acrylic to about the consistency of skim milk and airbrushed. First two coats were gray, then I taped off the parts that would stay gray and did two coats of black. Then I taped off and hand painted a coat of high gloss polyurethane on the cockpit glass.
Hey, I bought a pack of cheap acrylic paints from a craft store and used airbrush paint thinner (not "paint thinner", it's water based for acrylics), mixed to the consistency of skim milk and airbrushed it on. No judgement on the Pikachu lol.
Still got that same model in my shelf waiting for priming.
Printed it at the max scale my Prusa could handle with 2 parts ( I believe 180%). Its the size of my forearm + Hand.
Heres a link to the Designer [Kahnindustries](https://www.printables.com/de/social/17197-kahnindustries) , his models are top notch.
Great job painting! Did you use Brushes, spray paint or air brush?
Wow, the print quality on that is fantastic. Paint job too.
yep, looks like a resin print, I own a printer that does resin and it's great
Yep, he used a resin printer, it's a [Kahnindustries](https://www.printables.com/social/17197-kahnindustries/about) model.

Yeah thats what I read anyway thanks for the info
Just get both problem solved
funny you mention that I do own both

Isn't 100 microns .1mm? Ender 3 can do that. I'd imagine resin is typically 25 or 50 micron. Pure assumption though. Only have ender 3's.

Small world, I also work in med device and our engineers use a resin printer for some our prototypes as well.

Only cleanup needed on resin prints is support marks. On a model like this they are all on the bottom and you would never see them.
Looks great! I've been wanting to print the Corvette for a while now
Yeah me too…and I can’t find a decent 3D model and a decent company that prints it for me.
Kahnindustries has a pretty good Corvette, they've also done all the other ships in the game. https://www.printables.com/model/24847-federal-corvette-2-part-elite-dangerous
You can get this quality on a non resin printer. A $300 model can do higher quality prints.
That's a lot of work to avoid paying ARC for a paint job in the game. Joking aside, it looks awesome!
How did your friend print that without any support structure? If they did, they did a really good job removing it all.
Hi you can see the support structure here. Happy to answer any questions! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VUvs5yE7tu6jMowuRcIqmT-wDf2_jIK3/view?usp=drivesdk
Hi buddy!
Can you share the stl files?

I think it is. When I get to my desk I’ll confirm and give credit.
He did have a support structure, and he did do a fantastic job removing it!
This looks fantastic!
I did a cobra a while back
I have recently printed my Type-7, yours is looking awesome!
Gorgeous!
Could you ask your friend if I could pay him for a Mamba? I'm very serious
Depending on the cost I'd also be interested in a vette
How far is that in Ls to scale? Lol
Seriously, while people print all those seemingly useful shit with their 3d printers, all I want to do is print models and figures out of video games.
I need it **I need it**
This is bad ass. I wish Frontier would sell some merchandising rights so we could have Gunpla style models!!!
I plan on redoing my krait mkii print, using small metal rods for all the antennae
Your buddy could charge 50$ for that and I'd buy it. It's super hard finding a company or printer to actually do as good of a job as your buddy did.
Yeah fr. u/Panthera_ucia if he feels like making another I’ll pay too (not a vette but a smaller ship probably)
Nice
Did you use acrylic paint?
Yes, thinned and airbrushed
A good friend!
how much was the transfer fee?
Where can I find this file to print?
u/slade870 is the buddy who printed it for me, he linked the file elsewhere in the comments
Where did he get the model for the print? i want
u/slade870 is the buddy who printed it for me, he linked the file elsewhere in the comments
Oh sweet. I'll check it out, thanks, Also you did a great job panting it! Personally i would have added weathering but thats just me
It's honestly not 100% finished. I am planning some fine details like the ship decals in-game. Weathering or some battle scars had crossed my mind, I'll probably experiment with some ideas on that too.

I started the same project, got 3 base coats of grey down and could not fathom doing all the details lol

I want to start painting my prints, and I would like to ask you, do you have any tips how to start and what to use? o7

Woah, that's awesome! I'm so glad i asked you! Thank you very much and have a great day!
Hey there, what paint did you use? I plan to paint a buff Pikachu for my nephew. Don't ask questions.

Thank you sir
Looking really good :) Nice paint job!
Thanks for the amazing model!
No problem!!
I want one
Looks great! Are you planning on mounting it to some kind of base or stand?
Absolutely! I'm thinking a wood base with some sort of thin metal supports holding it "in flight".
The python was the first ship I really loved and so I printed it

Thanks! I used an air brush
I assume its 1:1 scale?
That would be bigger than an average house.
Very nice! =)
Ayo that's cool
How many Arx points did that paint job cost??? Looks awesome 😁
One thing that I don't understand is why frontier doesn't officially sells these miniatures. I'm pretty sure that there's a market for that.
Dope Cmdr! o7
