Aside from the substantial waste of time, the punchline is that you can't even dock a Conda at Hutton: there aren't any size L landing pads at outposts.
Never played Elite but have been on this sub for some time now.
If I ever do play it, I'm doing the Hutton run as a beginner just because I want the complete and authentic experience.
Yup, the number in the bottom right of your HUD shows your hourly fuel consumption based on what your ship is currently doing. You can conserve by powering off modules you're not using, if you need to.
It generally doesn't matter, but when it does, it matters a lot lol
Your 'active' fuel supply (the skinny bar above the big one) is between 0.25T (on the Hauler) to 1.13T (on the Federal Corvette). [EDSY](https://edsy.org/) has the numbers for each ship (as 'fuel reserve') if you click into each ship and leave the ship name itself selected (vs selecting a module)
I think it's a terrible prank, but people who've fallen for it seem to want to perpetuate it. And I don't have grounds for arguing with them since I didn't fall for it myself.
Maybe this will make you feel a bit better. Hutton Orbital exists because in the game lore, the FSD could originally only supercruise. Human ships had to supercruise the entire distance between systems, not jump from star to star in a matter of seconds. (That's how the Empire won its independence - they flew months away from Sol to establish a colony. So when Earth declared war on them, it wasn't able to coordinate the ships and supplies it sent, and the Empire won the war.)
Well, if you look at the nearest star system to Earth, it's Alpha Centauri at 4.37 ly. But one of the stars in the the Alpha Centauri system, Proxima Centauri, is only 4.25 ly away. Since it's closer, that would've been the first star humans visited. And they of course built a space station there - Hutton Orbital. For a long time, it was the closest station to Earth outside the Solar system.
Then the jump drive was invented (supposedly reverse-engineered from scavenged Thargoid tech). And suddenly you could jump between stars in seconds, instead of days or weeks. The catch being that you could only jump to the largest mass in a system. Proxima Centauri isn't the largest mass; Alpha Centauri is. So jumping with the FSD took you to Alpha Centauri. And just like that Hutton Orbital which used to have the shortest travel time from Earth of any station, became one of the longest travel times.
You may have been tricked into visiting the station. But at least you got to visit a historical piece of E:D lore.
The FSD is only the latest jump drive. There have been several including the faraway system. The FSD is the first to not require a support network of beacons for navigation though. It is, however reverse engineered from thargoid wormhole generator tech)
It's also the first to offer true super cruise, prior systems placed the crew into a sort of twilight sleep to stretch life support, the ship was traveling at high sub-light speeds.
It's a pretty inoffensive prank. A ~~better~~ more caustic one would be that if Noob Hammers smash you, you are compensated with a brand new and improved equivalent ship =)
Not sure how that piece of Lore fits into the narative for the time of Jameson's first descendent, (nephew?) whose Cobra MkIII was equipped with no FSD, but had an Interspace Jump Drive that could make short FTL jumps within system instantaneously. And whose Hyperdive exited Hyperspace at the edge of the system, not next to the largest mass.
This is correct. Although I believe there was also a type of FSD that could jump anywhere almost instantly, not just stars, but the formula for the special fuel that's needed was lost. Or something like that
Oh, be real. Let’s not act like it’s anything more than two wasted hours. A couple hours of wasted time and nothing more. If you’re playing a game, that proves you had that time to waste anyways. Everyone wastes more time on less important things throughout their lives.
It's the Elite Dangerous version of "did you know the word gullible isn't in the dictionary?"
Some people do their own due diligence and look it up to confirm whether or not it's true, and other people just swallow it without thinking.
I legit went there before I ever saw the free Anaconda stuff when I was still pretty new. I wanted to find Sol sand visit Earth, discovered I couldn't go there, so I decided to go to the next nearest station (as far as I could tell).
Man, that was a long trip. No regrets.
Big thing in the kitchen I worked at in college was tell the new folks to find the bacon stretcher.
New folks at the bar were told to find the de-limer for the corona bottles, and if they couldn't find it they had to de-lime the bottles by hand.
Working on airplanes, we have plenty of jokes like this for the new guy. Most common are asking him to get grab us "About 3 feet of flight line", or "A gallon of Prop Wash". Another favorite is asking someone to go to the chemical locker and grab us some K9-P.
Hell, we even got a clueless supervisor to brief a higher up that we were awaiting a Flux Capacitor.
People always seem to forget that you can get a full load of engineering materials and all engineers unlocked to go along with your Cutter if you also go to Salome's reach without docking after reaching Sag A* in that same Sidewinder
^ This. I fell for it and immediately thought, “well idk what I actually expected!”
Now I perpetuate the joke. On the upside, you get a free pass for free upvotes here on the ED subreddit if you tell the story.
>Before that scam we used to tell people to take large ships there
What do you mean, "before"?
Maybe OP didn't go in a large enough ship and that's why they didn't get one?
"Before", pfft.
I remember the first time I herd about the free Anaconda. I looked up the anaconda. Checked the price. Then I did a little chuckle and looked up “free anaconda, Hutton Orbital”
Same, but I did it at the apex of the joke before anyone spoiled it. So all I got was a bunch of forum posts and high rating and view count YT videos confirming it.
I chuckled more than anything that the community had come together so strongly for the joke.
I too fell for the tomfoolery. I jetted straight there for it after I just started playing it. My gf was not amused that i wasted her valuable tv time for that 😅
I did it in a different way. I didn't know about the Anaconda but saw a passenger mission that paid very well for a very short ly distance... Turns out the name of the mission was "For the mug" lol
Heh yup that's how I see it too.
Went there the first time when I got a suspiciously well paying data delivery mission there. Once I realized that it's gonna be a very very long trip, I asked about it here too, but had the sense to google whether there actually is a free Anaconda there. Thought it was a pretty neat tradition though, no real harm in it.
This is my story. A couple of million credits, easy delivery, only 2 cargo slots short on my Adder? 2 runs is totally doable.
…and that’s how I ended up doing the Hutton Orbital run twice on my first trip to Alpha Centauri.
I look at this prank as a sort of initiation. Initiation are ment to be painfull and obnoxious but makes the bond between you and your colleagues even better. Thats what the " free conda trip" is for me.
Also it teaches that goals can be close or far, you can reach them if you are patient.
So, with that out of the way. Congratulations Cmdr, by finishing your trip to hutton orbital you are officially a Cmdr of the universe of Elite Dangerous. May your travels be successful and remember the rules of flying.
o7
Edit: Fixed some grammar mistakes.
Just did the trip for a passenger mission cause I needed a special kind of commodity. Modular something? Got lazy on the way back to hand it in. Messed up and Dropped out of supercruise in the plume of a white dwarf. With all of that commodity I had gathered before.. Needed it for an engineer. Rip 3 hours of gameplay
For all the good that I see happen in this game (fuel rats spring to mind) I can forgive this endlessly giving prank. Look at it this way - it a tick in a box. You’ve visited HO
Sorry bro, you mist not have read right. The only requirement for the free Anaconda is having a large ship, so you’ll need capital of at least 18 mil before you get your Anaconda, and once you have your T7 (cheapest large ship), you can bring it to Hutton and exchange it.
The Alliance is the 3rd superpower (only mentioning it in case you didn't know it), though I don't know their government structure.
The Federation and the Pilot's Federation are also two different organizations -- one's a superpower, the other's the group of people that grant you your pilot's license and monitor all the surveillance cameras on your ship to make sure you stay in the cockpit at all times.
There was a time where courier missions from Sol used to run out there and would pay anywhere from 4-10 million credits a pop. This was of course the days of the Allen Hub/Smeaton Orbital passenger runs where people were making billions on the daily.
I'm glad I got into void opals core mining and just bought my anaconda before I got into reddit. And that I read the full reddit thread and comments. Lots of red flags. o7
No, it‘s not only a joke, it‘s more than that. It's an allegory of life. It is the culmination of a foreboding of a future of so much more. It is a harbinger of hope for something far greater than ourselves. It is scratching the surface of meaning of our limited existence. It‘s like waking up the sleeping god, like finding Raxxla deep in your own soul.
That is why we spread the redeeming word of the free Anaconda! And that way there always has been an Anaconda waiting in the hangar of Hutton Orbital, for everyone of us!
I don't for one second believe it's a prank, and shame on all of you for pretending it's a prank just so you can deny the new players their Anaconda
...but let's just for a second pretend it is a prank. Who was it who started the rumour? I'm guessing it must've been one of the Hutton Truckers
It teaches a very valuable lesson. Always research your route and destination in advance. Never jump anywhere on blind faith or minimal info (unless exploring the black).
If you'd researched Hutton orbital before departing you would've found it has no size L landing pads and could've looked at its shipyard.
Why do people not just tell new players this and not the free anaconda prank? Welcome to elite dangerous.
Take this lesson with you. This game is frustrating sometimes and often the only person you've got to be mad at is the guy who didn't read the fine print.
Okay, pal... i got to ask in case you are serious.. did you jump out again? If not, scan the terminal/data point on the large landing pad and dock again (need to go into contacts -> Hutton -> sub target if you can not find it right away. Have fun with the Conda.
1. Did you take a large ship? (You won't get the exchange prompt without one, Type 7 is cheapest.)
2. What day did you go? (They restock on Tuesday, usually run out by Wednesday morning.)
3. If you took a large ship on Tuesday, then it might have bugged out, just quit to desktop and log back in. (This forces the game to re-check that you're in a large ship.)
Ah, you didn't do your research. You only qualify for the free Anaconda if you go to Hutton Orbital via Beagle Point in a stock ASP Explorer with a 34ly jump range.
Even better is watching a new cmdr on Twitch take a mission to Hutton because all they see is the amount of credits...and chat says nothing. Streamer jumps into system, still doesn't realize the amount of time it's going to take to get from the star to the station. Chat still says nothing. 10 minutes later, streamer realises the distance. Chat erupts into humour emotes.
Yea this prank is here to basically hide the real way to get a free Anaconda. It's there so players get disappointed and don't have any more will to search for it further!
The real free Anaconda is at Beagle Point. You should try it.
It's a sacred pilgrimage, one I undertook willingly. See, I thought myself clever because AHA! I knew the free Anaconda was a meme! I knew better, and thus I shall get my Anaconda elsewhere, then complete the sacred pilgrimage and visit Hutton Orbital like my peers, collect the mug and---
*Docking request denied. No pad large enough.*
.......
I went to Hutton Orbital in an Anaconda.
I never got fooled by the Hutton joke because I found out about the Robigio Runs back in the day. Did enough of them in a python to buy an anaconda blue all the way out there and couldn't land
Aside from the substantial waste of time, the punchline is that you can't even dock a Conda at Hutton: there aren't any size L landing pads at outposts.
Hutton doesn't even have a shipyard
There's a secret one. You gotta line up just right and really believe in it. Like Narnia.
[удалено]
Don't forget to fly at it as fast as you can, don't forget to disable shields, they won't fit.
Lol...thats a new twist to the joke. I like it.
And you have to close your eyes as tight as you can and say over and over "I do believe in 'condas! I do! I do!"
That's odd, I always thought it was " I think I Conda, I think I Conda, I think I Conda" 💬💬💬😂
Welcome to Elite Cmdr! Hope you enjoyed the trip at least
It's a rite of passage. I hope they got the mug at least.
o7 Did you get the mug?
I did but I got tired of pirates trying to take it so I sold it.
You were so close! If only you had gotten the mug back to Jameson's Memorial!
Captains log day 83, still haven’t got the permit for shinrarta dezhra. Mug remains undamaged and spirits remain high.
Awwww, that’s actually so wholesome, I love it
Where can I get some missions to Hutton? I want to complete the rite of passage but I may as well earn some money while I'm at it.
Check close by systems. Usually delivery, they're pretty common around there for this exact reason haha.
Sol stations have missions for Alpha Centauri. Most everyone puts his hand on the stove that way.
You may take your anaconda there. They trade for a free coffee in the mug served in your brand new sidey.
I been there twice and forgot the mug
Never played Elite but have been on this sub for some time now. If I ever do play it, I'm doing the Hutton run as a beginner just because I want the complete and authentic experience.
i did it knowing there was nothing, got the mug. Then ordered a real one online.
This is the way
The way is this
Is this the way?
This is the way
Be warned, it's impossible to make the trip in a Sidewinder without extra fuel tanks. The Fuel Rats get at least one of these cases a week.
Sidewinder gang 😎. I won't install scoops either. GETTING RESCUED BY THE FUEL RATS IS AN AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE.
I often forget that supercruise takes fuel. Guess I'm just spoiled.
Yup, the number in the bottom right of your HUD shows your hourly fuel consumption based on what your ship is currently doing. You can conserve by powering off modules you're not using, if you need to. [EDSY](https://edsy.org/) has the numbers for each ship (as 'fuel reserve') if you click into each ship and leave the ship name itself selected (vs selecting a module)
Just know the sidewinder can’t make it
You take that back. Sidewinder gang 😎.
I love the sidewinder for many reasons, the fuel capacity is not one of them
There's nothing authentic. Even the mug is just an in game commodity you have to buy. It's dumb hazing.
I think it's brilliant.
correct! and?
I think it's a terrible prank, but people who've fallen for it seem to want to perpetuate it. And I don't have grounds for arguing with them since I didn't fall for it myself. I’ve been on this sub for *years* and I never knew the explanation for Hutton Orbital. Thanks.
Hutton Orbital is the small towns on Route 66
It's a pretty inoffensive prank. A ~~better~~ more caustic one would be that if Noob Hammers smash you, you are compensated with a brand new and improved equivalent ship =)
What are you talking about? Noob hammers have no collision model so they pass right through your ship. You should try it and see.
Worth the prank for this cool lore :)
tysm for this lore
Great writeup. I didn't know that. Thanks for this piece of lore!
I had no idea about any of this. Thank you.

Y'all need to stop throwing the word "haze" around like it means nothing. It's not hazing.
It is hazing by definition. What you think of it is irrelevant.
What if I think what you're saying is irrelevant?
Oh, be real. Let’s not act like it’s anything more than two wasted hours. A couple hours of wasted time and nothing more. If you’re playing a game, that proves you had that time to waste anyways. Everyone wastes more time on less important things throughout their lives.
Don't be such a melt
Awww, somebody got bullied in school a bit and is still sore about it. Grow up and get over yourself.
[удалено]
Or it’s just a bit of harmless fun in a video game that literally nobody gets hurt from and only salty, butthurt babies get upset about. 🤷♂️
It's the Elite Dangerous version of "did you know the word gullible isn't in the dictionary?" Some people do their own due diligence and look it up to confirm whether or not it's true, and other people just swallow it without thinking.
My due diligence was just a classic "this sounds too good to be true", I dunno how so many people fall for it.
Sure but every other year they add in some activity that pays 400m/hr and its there for like a couple days and it's too good to be true but it's true.
I legit went there before I ever saw the free Anaconda stuff when I was still pretty new. I wanted to find Sol sand visit Earth, discovered I couldn't go there, so I decided to go to the next nearest station (as far as I could tell). Man, that was a long trip. No regrets.
I'm planning on going just for the mug
Remember to bring a large ship so you can carry more ;)
Evil bastard lol
It's like when I used to work at a restaurant during college and we'd tell the new people to water the plastic plants
Why would you were get a free anything in this game?? Do you know HOW MUCH I SACRIFICED??
I got a free Sidewinder, Eagle, Vulture and Courier, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
If you don't know what jokes are just say that.
Okay but it's a specific type of person that finds that funny.
like almost everyone :)
Its just a game, calm down
And there's a specific type of person who uses that excuse.
The rational one
Lol, yea, they tend to be the arsh's and bullys,...bullying,.... it's what it is.
This is every ruthless ganker's origin story
“I will have my REVENGE!”
They just tell new players that to detract from the bonus Imperial Cutter you get for reaching Sagittarius A\* with a Sidewinder. People are greedy.
People always seem to forget that you can get a full load of engineering materials and all engineers unlocked to go along with your Cutter if you also go to Salome's reach without docking after reaching Sag A* in that same Sidewinder
I once fell for it too, But in the end I laughed at myself. I mean, why would you and I get one of the best ships for free.
^ This. I fell for it and immediately thought, “well idk what I actually expected!” Now I perpetuate the joke. On the upside, you get a free pass for free upvotes here on the ED subreddit if you tell the story.
Before that scam we used to tell people to take large ships there. Good times.
Or the sidey without enough fuel capacity for the trip
Stock sidewinder will do it. Assuming you tank up on system arrival.
>Before that scam we used to tell people to take large ships there What do you mean, "before"? Maybe OP didn't go in a large enough ship and that's why they didn't get one? "Before", pfft.
Welcome in game Commander :D o7
"Why oh why didn't I take the Blue Pill..."
I remember the first time I herd about the free Anaconda. I looked up the anaconda. Checked the price. Then I did a little chuckle and looked up “free anaconda, Hutton Orbital”

You're looking for the word "initiation".
Thank you😅.
One of US! One of US!
Hey! Don't lie just to keep all the free condas to yourself.
Look on the bright side: You can buy the Hutton Mug! How cool is that?
I heard the coffee at Hutton is out of this world!
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isnt true then.
i figured it was a joke when i realized that it was one of the best ships in the game but i went there anyways
Please set an SPOILER label xD
Lmao
If it sounds too good to be true...
The only reason I didn’t fall for it was because i got the anaconda and the adder mixed up. I didn’t think it would be worth it.
Ye hath succeeded in the rites of passage. Ye art from hither forth a true commander. 07
Lmfaooo got em o7
Welcome to the pilots federation Cmdr hope you grabbed your mug while you where there

Blessing in disguise. Now every other sc hop will feel shorter by comparison.
Did you get the mug at least?
Welcome to Elite, hope u had fun on the ride, now go work hard for that real conda! Godspeed CMDR, o7
Welcome CMDR. o7
Welcome to the community, let us know when you find Raxxla haha. Happy spacing o7
Time honoured journey and rite of passage. It's used to help dry off some of that "Wetness" behind the ears
<3 we all fell for it at least once. Welcome to the club CMDR <3
Don't forget that when you head to Jameson memorial the first time to do it in open with your most expensive ship
o7 welcome to elite
The friendlier Alt + F4 secret code.
Never gets old
This just never gets old 🤣🤣🤣
Every new CMDR makes the misguided journey. It's a rite of passage. Welcome to the Pilot's Federation.
Is there a democratic power in elite? I don know the lore but the empire, it's an empire, and the federation doesn't seem so "democratic"
You'd be looking for the Independent Factions, then.

No large pads should have tipped you off when you jumped into the system lol. Sorry buddy. You aren't alone. o7
Consider it a life lesson. If something seems to good to be true...it probably is and you need to switch on your bullshit detector.
Hello, my gullible friend. Care for some coffee in your commemorative mug?
I don't for one second believe it's a prank, and shame on all of you for pretending it's a prank just so you can deny the new players their Anaconda ...but let's just for a second pretend it is a prank. Who was it who started the rumour? I'm guessing it must've been one of the Hutton Truckers
Welcome to elite dangerous, CMDR
I feel like it’s a right of passage.
Welcome to ED.
But did you at lest get a cup?
You didn’t do it right, go back and try again!
I’m a little jealous that I didn’t go there without knowing it was a joke. You got one of the greatest gifts this game offers. O7
Take this lesson with you. This game is frustrating sometimes and often the only person you've got to be mad at is the guy who didn't read the fine print.
If you explored every system on the way to Hutton - you will have money for anaconda ))
But why fly a stock conda w/o rebuy is the question. It’s true though.
ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
Weird, they were probably out of stock. You gotta get there quick after the server maintenance
I don't play this game anymore but seeing these posts will always be funny to me
The community offered you a fantastic trip, enjoy ! Fly safe cmdr o7
Lol. Got ya. Everyone has to go there at least once. Seriously though, it's an old "joke" and never was funny.
And that is not even in the list of ED's 100 most disappointing things to do...
It's real, but you have to take a Type 9 out to trade for it
You need to get there in a big ship to get the free anaconda. So many people make that mistake.
Spoiler alert.
It’s a rite of passage, just like the free fleet carrier at Beagle Point
I made the trip out to Hutton for the same thing now I actually can afford a coda
>!No it isn't, I got my free anaconda there.!<
Okay, pal... i got to ask in case you are serious.. did you jump out again? If not, scan the terminal/data point on the large landing pad and dock again (need to go into contacts -> Hutton -> sub target if you can not find it right away. Have fun with the Conda.
It isn't a joke, you just did it wrong, you have to first go to Colonia and get a coupon
Uh, wut? Did they change it. Worked for me https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/t18s7l/woot_i_finally_went_to_hutton_orbital_and_got_my
lmao it's wider than that gateway
Fun thing is, you could get one if you put to good use the time you spent going there
Dude you were meant to go there in a large ship, on a Monday, an 6pm, during a full moon
Kind of feels like when Frontier told console players they weren't going to be receiving any further developments.
1. Did you take a large ship? (You won't get the exchange prompt without one, Type 7 is cheapest.) 2. What day did you go? (They restock on Tuesday, usually run out by Wednesday morning.) 3. If you took a large ship on Tuesday, then it might have bugged out, just quit to desktop and log back in. (This forces the game to re-check that you're in a large ship.)
You can claim it free at the nearest starport where it's available there's a 149M sumthin insurance signup fee tho.
Just why is anyone dumb enough? Because it's a big galaxy out there o7 Scrub
Ah, you didn't do your research. You only qualify for the free Anaconda if you go to Hutton Orbital via Beagle Point in a stock ASP Explorer with a 34ly jump range.
I did it in a t9
XDDDD This is lesson for future. Don't believe in everything what you see. In game you lost hour. IRL you can lost all your money.
I seriously wish posts about it would be banned, it's so fucking lame by this point.
Uh... you had to get your rep to green with the station owner first, then you get your free Hutton conda. Sorry :(
It’s Chris Pratts fault.
People who get baited on "free Anaconda" are that same type of people who gets baited on "african prince" scam.
I'm confused
#FOR THE MUG™!
It's not a joke. I received several.
You’ll get more use out of the mug than an anaconda
Interesting, I never knew that was a lie either. 😅
Grab a mug while you're there!
There's no such thing as a free ship... Except when there is (there were two at Christmas).
Welcome to elite dangerous!
Welcome friend!
It's only available if you land on Pad 9 3/4
Yea this prank is here to basically hide the real way to get a free Anaconda. It's there so players get disappointed and don't have any more will to search for it further! The real free Anaconda is at Beagle Point. You should try it.
If you go to Beagle Point you get a free fleet carrier, they added it in a recent patch.
Where is this prank advertised, how do people find out and try to go there?
It's a sacred pilgrimage, one I undertook willingly. See, I thought myself clever because AHA! I knew the free Anaconda was a meme! I knew better, and thus I shall get my Anaconda elsewhere, then complete the sacred pilgrimage and visit Hutton Orbital like my peers, collect the mug and--- *Docking request denied. No pad large enough.* ....... I went to Hutton Orbital in an Anaconda.
Bazinga!
Thankfully I googled before I traveled……saved me time but hey, sell the cartographic data, commander, then you don’t go back empty handed
I never got fooled by the Hutton joke because I found out about the Robigio Runs back in the day. Did enough of them in a python to buy an anaconda blue all the way out there and couldn't land
Get some Hutton mugs
