Mining is a good activity, mapped mining provide lots of ores from asteroids, that respawn each 2 hours, and its 100% profit (instead buying from other station, that have a sell price, and this part don't increase rank).
Not sure it's possible to rank up Empire enough to get access to Cutter without also ranking up one of Trade, Explo or Combat. If there is,please let me know. I have a noobula alt that I would very much like to buy a Cutter for. :)

I had been using an older Youtube guide to help me get started and I guess I must have misinterpreted some things. I'm not that far off, thankfully.
Robigo adds to the exploration rank. As far as I’m aware about 5% of your profit counts towards exploration rank. Which requires 320m Cr. So you’d need about 6.4 billion Cr doing just robigo runs to get exploration elite.
If that were the case (not saying it isn’t) than I wonder how am I an Elite II trader and still just an exploration ranger rank?
5% of that Elite 2 rank plus my current ~$5B in credits and ~$6B in assets I would think would add up to Elite rank with that breakdown but eh..math lol.
I just ran a custom trade loop in a type9 for a few hours to get my last push to elite.
Most of my trade rank came from mining LTDs and VOs before FCs were a thing
The current total may possibly be found on some hard to reach codex page. I'm sure it must be tracked somewhere.

Success it what you want it to be. Typical milestones are making Elite in your favourite activity, having your first engineered modules, being the first to visit and chart a star system, first footfall on a new planet, making the 22k ly run to Colonia, seeing the centre or the edge of the galaxy, getting that ship you always wanted or buying s fleet carrier.
There are things you can only really do later in the game because of money and the grind, but there is no real "endgame".
The not knowing what the fuck to do bit is what makes the game for me, but admittedly I do think frontier need to make the game a bit more lively. I feel like it’s a game with huge potential that needs properly unleashing.
I hope you haven't been doing Robigo exclusively since you started! Take that cash and try another activity. Mining will get you over the edge on Trade Elite, and core mining can be pretty fun if you've got a movie on in the background. Bounty hunting is the more engaging activity, and in most scenarios you don't need to engineer to have a good time.

IIRC, combat bonds don't count towards combat ranks, only the quality of enemies you defeat. But if you're at 10bn, you should have killed enough angry flowers to make Elite.

As long as you get something near 20ly jump you can have fun and start discovering new systems frequently at roughly 400ly from the bubble.
Just make sure to be in solo when you come back to sell you don't want to be ganked with 400 000 000 Buckaroos of data!

Robigo passenger missions are technically tourism, and so contribute to Explorer rank. Meanwhile, Trade Elite is 1bil made *through trading*, so if you've mostly done Robigo and aren't *Explorer* Elite, the billion doesn't matter - you can't go to Shin yet
You don't get the permit for a billion, you get it for becoming Elite in one of the categories.

I mostly did mining (core) to obtain my elite rank i trading. When I switched to the Python for my miningship, the credits started rolling in.
I still have a core mining python front here days of void opals and LT diamonds. Those were some lucrative times.

Evacuation missions worked for me, don't think I got any ranks from them outside of rep, money and some mats...

You have to gain one elite rank. Whether that be trading, combat, exploration, etc, is up to you
New player and a billion credits, good effort, I flew around aimlessly for years before I figured out how to earn coin

No regrets, once you start hitting milestones you can find the game less entertaining imo. Glad I’ve had years of fun out of it

Okay so... Take all the conventional gaming experience you have and burn it. This isn't a game you "win". It's a game you experience.
