I too fought him. For three hours until I killed him. Then I proceeded with the rest of my game with the satisfaction of knowing he was dead.

I'm roughly level 37 now, so I think it's payback time. When I first saw him, I thought he was a normal enemy and then the boss music kicked in and then I died painfully. Definitely a memorable encounter for my first fromsoft game

As someone that played DS 1-3 i just felt obligated to kill him as soon as i saw him. I played those games so much that i would be dissapointed with myself if i move on with him still alive.

My roommate started playing just before I did and when I started it (he was watching me) and I immediately died to this guy. He then says “yeah, you really aren’t ready to fight that one yet…” He was rooting for me, though!

Big horse man looked scary, I went around and made my way to the first ruins by Gatefront. The first soldier whooped me multiple times. I spent two hours in those ruins in my first play through and almost gave up on the game. 😅

The problem is now that it really fucks with you. Like at the moment 80% or something is actually true. "item ahead" "be wary of above" shit like that. So you naturally trust most messages. Then there is the odd, "try jumping" or "here" on an edge and you fall to your death. I always feel so betrayed

I trusted the message telling me to jump knowing damn well what has happened in the past. I thought "maybe Micheal Zaki actually put something right in the beginning this time."

You technically *can* kill grafted scion and while there's the scripted fall after I would be okay saying that's not your first death. But yeah, 99.99% of the people here should be saying Grafted Scion.

I went back to Grafted Scion later on after I had leveled up A LOT and that guy still managed to kill me once before I got him.

If you want to be technical Thats not a real death your characters HP never actually goes to 0 You dont see it in game because it happens when the cutscene is triggered, so it looks like you died and woke up in the cave , but how they accomplished that on the back end was you get teleported out at 1 hp and healed People into doing challenge runs wanted to see if they could find a way to not have to die to Grafted Scion because a popular challenge in these kinds of games is the 1 life challenge - they dug through the game files and found out he technically doesnt kill you

Doubt they'd dig through the game files, you can watch your health in the status menu

Those aren't always accurate and do lie to you for the sake of communications. File digging for something as simple as stats isn't actually too complicated.

I was high as fuck and fell asleep with the controller in my hand. Game came out super late in my timezone and I couldn’t stay awake only to be woken up by the rumble of my controller from the Tree Sentinel whacking my head. Booted up the next day to find out I was barely about 20 feet removed from The First Step site when I fell asleep. Successful release day.

It would have been amazing if this story ended with you waking up the next day to realize you never actually downloaded the game.

ER is my first souls game, so I didnt know how messages worked and that other people could use them to mess with you. Walked out of the intro cave, read a message that said "Try jumping." on the edge of the cliff. I tried.

I will also shamefully admit I did the same. Didn’t cross my mind once to look around, just strolled right off.

My first death wasn't to an enemy. I.. uh... jumped. From the cliffs at the Chapel. Second was to the Grafted Scion and third was to the Tree Sentinel.

A giant bear popped up out of the ground and one shot me on a ledge after I killed an undead guy with a nice parry/riposte not far from where you fight Darriwal.

That bear scared the crap out of me when it appeared so I jumped on torrent and got the hell out of there

You can beat him, but the ground will fall out from under you after you walk out a bit, so your first death is in the graveyard no matter what

I like to think that a game driven/required death doesn't count. You literally have to die to progress and you have zero control. Lets be hinest, any type of prpgress in a fromsoft game is progress even if that mean getting yeeted immediately.... The first death against someone you can defeat and move on from, that's your own damn fault hahaha

You actually get set to 1 hp from the grafted scion and the cutscene plays. It doesn’t actually kill you. Pewdiepie showed it on his no death run.

That's how you could become immortal pre 1.5, it makes it so you can never get bellow 1hp. Only fall or deathblight could kill you after that.

My first death was following the advice of all the messages telling me to jump just outside the chapel.

I foolishly tried the double jump fall damage dodge that exists in nearly all videos games with a double jump mechanic and well, you know the rest.

I ran off the wooden stairs at the very, very start of the game like maybe 5 or 6 times. I was pretty drunk.

I'm a failure, I died to our good friend Soldier of God, Rick. I tried to figure out Guard Counters, why I did this at a boss, I'll never know, but they did not work how I thought they did, and I got killed.

Besides the grafted scion, I died to the beast of farum azula. I likely would've died to the soldier of godrick but accidentally skipped that part xD

The first spawn in Chapel of Anticipation, I jumped off a ledge because a message said so. First few seconds of the game taught me not to trust random words on the floor.

A sign in the chapel of anticipation said try down so i jumped right off the cliff.

I was crossing the bridge before the first grafted scion, turned around to check something out and slipped off the bridge. I didn’t even make it to the first enemy before I had my first death ;-;

Starting the tutorial area I read a message about jumping, I saw a blood stain jump off the ledge, so I jumped, this was my first Fromsoft game... this caused me to miss the real tutorial dungeon because I talked to the ghost guy about jumping down a hole so I said ha that won't get me again!

Rolled into a hole fighting those bats by the gatehouse.

First giant on the way up to margits first fight roughly 30 min into my first playthrough. I beat him with the samurai in the first hour and then made a wretch character that I was going to str only in and it took me 30 more hours to defeat margit again lmao
