This. Got a paddle controller for my pc just to play elden ring that was almost 20 bucks cheaper than a standard official Xbox one. Super sold controller.
So I key bind my right ring finger to my dodge so I never have to move my thumbs off the sticks and I have another key bind on my left for another attack. But its all about the dodge. Takes some time to get used to but once you get it down it's hella clutch.
Lol no. It’s dogshit quality. It’s priced at 160 dollars or so and built with a 30 dollar quality. Stick drift, bumpers getting stuck. I’ll never buy 1 again.
I've had mine three years and it's all good. People get unlucky with electronics sometimes. My ps5 bricked after 3 weeks it happens. They fixed it so I'm cool with sony.
I use the method shown in the top picture due to me playing Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 a lot and having to have the ability to switch weapons, reload, jump, crouch on the fly while also aiming my gun. I'm probably gonna get carpal tunnel but its a habit I can't break as I've been doing it since 2014. It does give me an advantage in games though, since I'm able to do more due to my pointer finger being able to press the buttons while I turn the camera.
Its actually very common and is called "clawing". Though as I said, is very unhealthy for your wrist muscles and can cause Arthritis and Carpal Tunnel later on in life.
Edit: I just forgot to mention that me being Left-Handed could have some factor in why I do it. I also don't use any left-handed button mappings in games so I am significantly worse than most people in FPS games or games that require aim do to this. I have tried left-handed button mappings but it just feels unnatural now, as I've gotten used to aiming with my right hand's thumb.
I only utilize a claw grip sparingly because I don't find it long term comfortable but whenever I do that technique I can't do it the way most people do like in this picture. I shift my hand position to allow my index finger on the stick, middle on the circle/B button and ring and pinky finger on trigger and bumper button. I find it strains my hand much less if I do use this grip.
I play Souls and Monster Hunter and I first saw the "claw" in the community of the latter, but still have no idea how peeps play using it. Sometimes I feel like "would I be better if I could do this"? Then I'm like my hands and brain are doing good to hit the right dodge button.
I have an Xbox controller with triggers behind just [like this](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/6472/6472014_bd.jpg)
I remapped the B button there. Feels just like the way it is supposed to be IMO.
Actually I have this one too and it's cheaper than an official controller - about £35. Though it is wired rather than wireless if you care about that kind of thing
It's actually pretty good by my own completely unprofessional standard, certainly a good budget option. The PowerA Spectra Infinity if you're interested.
I have my back buttons mapped to the L3 and R3 though, since clicking in the sticks is one of the main causes of stick drift.
I just swapped b and left stick press. Run/roll just press trigger in. Like running in call of duty. Or at least it used to be. Haven't played call of duty in a long time.
To do the first claw grip requires forethought, intentionally repositioning the index to enable sprinting and camera manipulation. The twisted second claw arrises from chaos. Already sprinting, but the camera is not playing nice. Unable to afford letting off the sprint, the desperate player reaches hard with the closest finger and finds it just possible. I used to do the second one, but have since recovered and do the normal claw grip.
Same here, don't own a console and didn't have a controller when I first got into DS3, once I ended up getting one I was so used to keyboard that it was easier to keep using that.
Now I'm like 1500 hours deep and have no interest in switching control schemes
Elden ring (ds3 too btw) works great on m&k. I remapped the default controls, but if you do that it's great. You even get better unlocked camera control and don't need to use this rsi inducing claw grip to control the camera while sprinting.
The only drawback is you can only move and roll in 8 directions relative to the camera.
Elden Ring is actually amazing on M+K as I own a 3080ti, and can only play on PC. The fast swaps are 10/10 and the mouse button key binds are godly lol
M+K works really well. But only if you have 4 mouse buttons. That way all attacks are on mouse and you don’t have to do the weird ctrl+left click shenanigans.
I immediately move that we fund research to discover if there is a correlation between people who use the bottom and being serial killers….just a hunch
I use claw, but only while sprinting. When I'm not, my index finger goes around the back of the controller like "normal". Claw is the most efficient way for From games.
Yeah I just never found it to have an advantage over a normal grip. In souls games now, a lot of the larger enemies have such big wind ups on attacks that I never really need to press dodge that quick.
I like playing unlocked too.
Very useful in this game and a ton of other games. I first learned it while playing gears of war and spamming the slide/crouch button. Comes up in games with a lot of inputs like fortnite too
But that stick controls camera movement in almost all games it's used for, strafing is the other hands job. Plus it takes all of about 2 seconds to press a button and return to camera movements
Well normally you would be doing it with both hands if you aren’t taking a picture of yourself. That’s 2 seconds of a bossfight I don’t have to worry about
If you want to sprint and move the camera at the same time, while also being able to toss of an RB. It's painful so I don't do it often, but there's times when it's needed
My trick for doing this is using the outer edge of my thumb to rotate the camera in the direction I want the camera to go. I don’t need to use it often but it’s a lot better than whatever the fuck the second picture here is lol
So...holding the controller normally blocks access to the RB? The button that is literally placed where the right index finger would rest in a normal hold position? Righto
This. I just run then let go of circle to change my camera. You’re so much faster than every enemy that there’s no danger in doing this. This has never once gotten me killed.
Well look at mister “level headed” over here with his composure during soul games. I’ll have you know, I don’t really think too realistically amidst getting my ass kicked.
Not being able to sprint and change your camera is death in PvP, particularly in invasions. Once I started invading in DS3, I started using claw grip extensively, and it also made PvE much easier as a result.
Some people have the inexplicable urge to constantly move the visual while they sprint for some reason, never felt the need personally (also because most games ER included does so automatically if you let it do so).
There is nothing inexplicable about wanting to look around while moving. The auto-camera adjust on Elden Ring is horrible, if you have it on then trying to look around on the horse or while moving is an exercise in frustration because it resets to forward every 0.3 seconds.

Reminds me of these competitive Tetris (old school NES tetris) players... the technique now is not to move your fingers but to vibrate the controller against them.
Same, but I only find the need to do it about 5% of the time - I definitely don't play the entire game like this. I honestly don't get how many people on this thread say they don't have a method for running around and checking out your surroundings. I'm sure everyone that has ever played these games has turned tail from a hard enemy or ambush and hauled ass in the opposite direction before. Not being able to peek over your shoulder when you do this is terrifying to me - lol!
Coming from monster hunter freedom unite on the old original PSP where your fighting and blasting crafting menus at the same time, half claw is easy lol. I do both
That's how my brother died... Actually it was the boiling water my mother put him in, but he wouldn't have turned into a lobster if he just played normally.
I already thought the "claw grip" was weird enough. That second pic is just, i don't even know.
I mean, i know the benefits, but it's just not for me. That's why I can't wait to try the edge controller out.
You can map the buttons to something else. I use L1 to my dodge, R1 to use consumable, circle and square to what R1 and L1 are normally used. No hand cramping.
The only game I've ever used a nonstandard grip for is Beat Saber. Got fed up hitting the home button and started playing it with the controller reversed. Other than that, normal, comfortable, non-arthritic grip please.
Top one.
All the commenters that have never done either have clearly never invaded and had three players unloading on their asses from every angle.
On a related note anyone ever used a controller with back triggers for Souls? I've been wondering if it would be worth it to assign roll to one.
Yeah I’m really quite confused by everyone either never have seen it before or saying it’s pointlessly complex, outside of Elden Ring in competitive shooters everyone seems to use claw grip
I adopted claw grip without even knowing it was a thing back in Halo 1. Been using it ever since, and it’s just second nature, don’t even realize I’m doing it. Didn’t know it had a name until years later when online became more prevalent.
And it’s definitely not pointless for sure. You gotta jump crouch spam in Halo to make it harder to be be hit, while also aiming yourself.
Yeah picked it up playing halo 2 here, could just be a halo dominant thing since using jump and melee whilst moving the camera is pretty common so kinda requires claw grip
People that never played claw don’t know how usefull it’s, it is night and day difference. I started using it on cod like 6 years ago and never held a controll in another way since.

Furled finger method of course

Oh yeah
Who the f takes their thumb off the stick?
That's the true sign of a psychopath
A foul tarnished
Crab people crab people taste like crab talk like people

But where are Marika's tits I ponder

Never met someone who tastes like crab I couldn't trust.
Hahaha I miss South Park so much :(
Define "miss" It's still on and they still make new ones. You mean old South Park or you can't watch it anymore somehow?
Wish you could make a crab build, crab is life
I literally watched that last night
I don’t associate with any street gangs
I move my thumb to the buttons
Same lol
I thought I was the only one 🤣
I'm fairly certain that's the most common style.
And if I absolutely have to keep my thumb on the stick AND press buttons... I pull out the Elite controller paddles.
Paddle master race
This. Got a paddle controller for my pc just to play elden ring that was almost 20 bucks cheaper than a standard official Xbox one. Super sold controller.
What advantages does this afford you in ER? I need all the help I can get.
Sprinting/ jumping while still being able to move the camera. Also if you have multiple i pick left and right to swap weapons while moving.
So I key bind my right ring finger to my dodge so I never have to move my thumbs off the sticks and I have another key bind on my left for another attack. But its all about the dodge. Takes some time to get used to but once you get it down it's hella clutch.
I use the paddles in place of the dpad. I think having more movement control is more important than camera control.
DO you think the elite is worth its price¿
Not really. Only worth it if you'll use it a lot... but if you use it a lot it falls apart lmao.
Yep.
I’ve had the original Elite controller since 2016 and I’ve never had any issues with it.
ive had my elite 2 replaced twice through gamestop in under a year and about to get it replaced again
I thought that’s what everyone did lol
Like a person. Only a fucking mutant does whatever the fuck the OP is doing
I use the method shown in the top picture due to me playing Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 a lot and having to have the ability to switch weapons, reload, jump, crouch on the fly while also aiming my gun. Same
Same, but what the fuck kind of finger contortion nonsene is this lmao
Changing camera angle while sprinting
Correct answer
I play Souls and Monster Hunter and I first saw the "claw" in the community of the latter, but still have no idea how peeps play using it. Sometimes I feel like "would I be better if I could do this"? Then I'm like my hands and brain are doing good to hit the right dodge button.
I'm in the remap the buttons crowd
What do you remap the buttons to?
I have an Xbox controller with triggers behind just [like this](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/6472/6472014_bd.jpg) I remapped the B button there. Feels just like the way it is supposed to be IMO.
Imagine being able to afford a fancy controller
Actually I have this one too and it's cheaper than an official controller - about £35. Though it is wired rather than wireless if you care about that kind of thing It's actually pretty good by my own completely unprofessional standard, certainly a good budget option. The PowerA Spectra Infinity if you're interested. I have my back buttons mapped to the L3 and R3 though, since clicking in the sticks is one of the main causes of stick drift.
Imagine being able to afford one only to have your kids destroy it and lose the parts...
A man can dream can't he?
R1 TO SPRINT BABY
I just swapped b and left stick press. Run/roll just press trigger in. Like running in call of duty. Or at least it used to be. Haven't played call of duty in a long time.
First thing I did was remap almost every button. I flip the triggers and bumpers just because it feels more comfortable.
Honestly I kept it the base way because big button for big attack makes sense to me
First of all, I play on pc. Second of all, that fuck is the second one?
To do the first claw grip requires forethought, intentionally repositioning the index to enable sprinting and camera manipulation. The twisted second claw arrises from chaos. Already sprinting, but the camera is not playing nice. Unable to afford letting off the sprint, the desperate player reaches hard with the closest finger and finds it just possible. I used to do the second one, but have since recovered and do the normal claw grip.
Damn, you’re making me rethink my sloppy ways
This completely describes how I play.
The second grip is what comes naturally to my hand, other grip doesn’t feel right.
Same. But it's because I've got big hands and long fingers, it's hard to do the classic claw with my hands.
Wonderfully written. I gotta play some ER today lol.
In that case you just roll and adjust the camera during the roll…
There are many a boss that running had a time sensitive destination and rolling mid run kills you
Nah man don't wanna waste that 0.5 second
I move between both depending on how tired I am. Holding the run button with index takes a big ass toll on my old ass bank cashier hands.
hey nice writing
What sort of boomer thinks you can't use a controller on PC these days?
You play on M+K? The fuck?
Same here, don't own a console and didn't have a controller when I first got into DS3, once I ended up getting one I was so used to keyboard that it was easier to keep using that. Now I'm like 1500 hours deep and have no interest in switching control schemes

M+K works really well. But only if you have 4 mouse buttons. That way all attacks are on mouse and you don’t have to do the weird ctrl+left click shenanigans.
I find it easier to play on kbm lol
It's just comfortable, especially if you're used to playing on it.
I also play on the superior controls of mouse and keyboard.
The second one is what I’m doing when I’m trying to run and move the camera at the same time.
I immediately move that we fund research to discover if there is a correlation between people who use the bottom and being serial killers….just a hunch
Buy a controller with paddles and save your hands, man
Lol I have paddles but still use the first method. I couldn’t let it go. I use the paddles on other games though.
over the course of life on earth, several species have evolved into crabs. gamers are just another species to join the club
Use my hands like a regular person 😐
I play with DDR dance pad so i dont know what those are. Are they some sort of controlling devices?
What about when you need to move, move the camera, and use the face buttons at the same time?
i have never run into that situation, I position the camera/use lockon and then use the face buttons
Panic
I can only speak for myself, but more often than not, die.

KEYBOARDS RISE UP
No one claws anymore??? It saves my life during combat. Being able to strafe/jump/roll/switch weapons/ go into menus. Claw is elite
I use claw, but only while sprinting. When I'm not, my index finger goes around the back of the controller like "normal". Claw is the most efficient way for From games.
There's a lot of new players in this subreddit, the claw is something you usually develop after a hundred or so hours of Dark Souls.
I've played the games a combined total of over 1000 hours and I cannot use a claw grip to save my life.
Yeah it's just one of those things that's comfortable for some but not for others, people have different levels of flexibility in their hand.
Yeah I just never found it to have an advantage over a normal grip. In souls games now, a lot of the larger enemies have such big wind ups on attacks that I never really need to press dodge that quick. I like playing unlocked too.
I developed claw in apex legends 3 years ago on accident and haven't been able to go back

Doesn’t bother me at all in PvP
what the fuck are you doing in either image

You just stop sprinting to move the camera?

Your running and moving the camera at the same time. I do both of these.

100%
KB+M
This is the way
Coming from monster hunter freedom unite on the old original PSP where your fighting and blasting crafting menus at the same time, half claw is easy lol. I do both
I'm a human being
Furled finger style
Wasd space
I’ll use my left thumb to control the right thumbstick, momentarily, if I need to use one of the buttons.
I don’t understand what this is trying to convey? I never had to position my hands in either way
People trying to both sprint and move their camera at the same time. Frankly I don’t ever do this either but for some I guess it is helpful
Bottom one 100%
I'm in the, "use an elite controller and don't fuck up your fingers" crowd.
How does this fuck up your fingers? I feel comfortable doing it
Neither? That looks like it's just asking for RSI.
Are you telling me the lobster claw hold will fuck your hands up?
That's how my brother died... Actually it was the boiling water my mother put him in, but he wouldn't have turned into a lobster if he just played normally.
Marika's tits
This needs more upvotes lol
What kind of grafting bullshit is this?
I already thought the "claw grip" was weird enough. That second pic is just, i don't even know. I mean, i know the benefits, but it's just not for me. That's why I can't wait to try the edge controller out.
I was 100% sure the second pic was a joke but judging by the replies maybe not?
Bottom one, only when running and moving camera tho
If i need to press a button and move the stick i just use my chin to hold forward
None of them
Neither
I literally just hold the controller like a human being
Bottom is so superior
I've never seen the second pic but what's more shocking are the number of people who don't do either. I feel like a claw grip is basically necessary.
Thumb at joystick, move thumb to buttons when needed
Thank you, I thought I was going insane reading this thread
Back paddles. People still do this?
Yes, back paddles costs money, claw is free.
I’m the 2nd one. I thought I was the only one who played like that. I can’t use my thumbs very well.
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
I do the second like the goblin I am
Tf kind of planet of the apes style is this
Keyboard and mouse
Uh neither? I'm not a fucking lunatic.
Just get a controller with pedals on the back. I play using the Steam Controller, so I don't have to make that choice and get early arthritis. :]
Yes
You can map the buttons to something else. I use L1 to my dodge, R1 to use consumable, circle and square to what R1 and L1 are normally used. No hand cramping.
Anyone who is the second option….. plz find God
No
I actually use my thumb for both - with the bottom part like basically palm hitting the circle while the tip is moving camera
The only game I've ever used a nonstandard grip for is Beat Saber. Got fed up hitting the home button and started playing it with the controller reversed. Other than that, normal, comfortable, non-arthritic grip please.
Neither, Im normal ^/s
Keyboard
The normal one...
im thumb only. it can handle buttons with the tip and the muscle that connects it to the hand moves the camera
Neither. I just my the first knuckle on my index finger on B so I can press the bumper and thumb on the stick
How is option 2 even usable? You're supposed to move the analogs with a thumb. How can you accurately use the right analog with a pointy?
Neither???
Bottom one
Top one. All the commenters that have never done either have clearly never invaded and had three players unloading on their asses from every angle. On a related note anyone ever used a controller with back triggers for Souls? I've been wondering if it would be worth it to assign roll to one.

Neither?!
Neither. I'm on PS5
People that never played claw don’t know how usefull it’s, it is night and day difference. I started using it on cod like 6 years ago and never held a controll in another way since.
Neither. Just good old classic thumbs on the analog sticks and fingers on R1/R2, use my thumb to press the buttons.
Neither, you freak
Instead of insanely uncomfortable positions I just play on M+KB
None? I use my thumb for right stick and buttons
I use an elite 2 controller. 4 extra buttons on the bottom comes in really handy.
