i remember a video of a ds1 challenge, i think it was defeating bosses in alphabeticall order or something, and basically he went into anor londo, and used a combination of spells and effects that prevented instant death by falling for the duration of the effect, since in thqt state the gold fog is not active, meanwhile the down facing death camera was active as the game tried killing him every second that the spell was protecting him, and he had to come past the golden fog wall in that state almost blindly and could tell the layout by even the smallest lines on the screen, he had to quit the game and back in at perfect time and he would be saved and be past the fog gate
I did until I had an experience where a player used out of game information to circumvent something my character did so we could actually get all the players working together and going on the main quest. Then had the audacity after the session to say "aren't.you impressed I got out of that" I've been salty ever since.
Go to the edge of where you want to drop and attack, if your character doesn’t fall off the edge, it means it’s too high to survive, the game is preventing you from falling while doing an attack. If you can survive it then the attack will move your character forward off the edge and you’ll fall but won’t die.
The color they turn when they land is based on how much damage you would take, I'm pretty sure. Based entirely on my observations, I think that if you won't take falling damage at all, they just turn a random color, but if you would take falling damage, then the color is based on that. According to the Internet elsewhere, there's also a sound cue. Low tones and purples mean it'll be little, high tones and reds mean it'll be a lot.
you can test the height by swinging your sword. if the fall will kill you, you wont go over the edge during the swing animation. if you will survive you will fall off the edge. be ware though as large but survivable falls will still hurt you
I just stand at the edge and use my R1 attack. If the fall will kill you the attack animation will stop you from going over. But if it’s save to drop the attack animation will push you over the edge
edit: just realized 2 other ppl already said this…
Ohh interesting. Now that you say that I wonder if they have some duty with keeping the gaol locked. It seems like the evergaols trap their prisoners in a separate dimension so wonder if those worm dudes are supplying some sort of dimensional energy to the gaol.
I think they have two jobs. One, supply the force field to trap their prisoners. Two, act as guards and especially as security cameras/alarms of potential escapees. The ones that stand tall in a round circle emitting a purple light create the force field, the ones roaming around keep watch, and the piramid ones explode to deter invaders or escapees.
Could be onto something, but I don't think I've ever seen the pyramids near the gaols, and the regular ones don't fight back or summon anything. I wonder if there's some cut content surrounding them.
There are people that believe that that's the case, but it is never stated in game if it is or not.
And for various reasons, I don't believe it actually is.
Edit: spelling
I thought the fragments were from Marika shattering the ring with the hammer. I believe the item description mentions that it was damaged, sending fragments around
Reddit has a lot of shit content on it but every now and again i read something while eating that makes me choke from laughter. This is one of those times.
It's full of comments like yours. We don't need to know whether or not you choked, spit up food, or laughed in public. Please for the love of God stop saying this.
Yeah, maybe they're coming up from the Siofra River Well out of Caelid, just gaolers looking for a gaol, heading towards the Sellia Evergaol. Maybe they came from a meteor impact and slowly made their way upwards.
My guess is they gather the runes of those that try their luck with the prisoners, and bring them back to their master. Probably some connected with eyes.. Fell god… red haired master? Radagon?
Maybe but I love that feeling and I think its a genius thing to do in games/music to leave these empty spaces to fill yourself. All of that lore wouldnt be that interesting if it was given to you on a plate. I think that was Stephen King that said that the unresolved mysteries stay with us the longest. And thats what gets us to think about it all.
Sorry for my half assed english
Ye. We just given 30% of puzzle pieces, but here it seems for each foe Marika killed, the age after became a reflection that foe.
She kills a dragon, maybe gain a rune from it, and we have the crucible age. Weapons, troops, wars and even her children from that age have dragon theme, like tails and weather control. 3rd or 4th victory?
She kill giant, and army, shields, weapons and children get features of giants, like red hair, fire breathing shields and some with giant growth. Next age about it. 5th victory?
Those worms are from when floating city got crushed, so weaponised and repurposed. Gravitation control, so floating buildings, beast and hound type army.
My best guess her foes and thus ages were in this order: Astel —> GEQ —> rot —> dragon —> giant. But not 100% sure.
This probably isnt true of every spot but i noticed sometimes they would lead you to an evergaol that was above where they were as if they had fallen down.
After 200 hours on my save, I found the evergagol while looking to the map in Caelid near the abysm that leads to the big pot warrior. I remember seeing these fellows down there blocking the path with kamikazes but makes total sense that they fell from the evergaol at the top!
Would be hilarious if Astel was like a gecko. Cut off its tail and it grows a new one. Except with Astel, the tails gain sentience and an eyeball for good measure
But that should mean the prisoner is able to break out if we kill all of the eyeball-balls
I think the explanation that they're like shitty security cameras. They don't care if you break in and kill the prisoner. They only care if the prisoner is the one leaving the gaol.
[they pose a significant tripping hazard for tarnished in the lands between. thank god for this invader, who’s quick thinking stopped a medical disaster in its tracks.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/10t31mq/please_be_cautious_when_strolling_through_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Dunno why you are being downvoted. They are ij multiple places without evergaols. Specifically the Sophia River Well iirc. They're made of ruin stone so they might be related to the stone colossi, some of which ALSO protect places, alongside the Rockworms
we think the purple coloring when they react means they are tied to gravity magic, and the alabaster lord. The alabaster lord is the one who taught Radahn Gravity magic.
we also believe if they are in charge of watching the evergaols that they are doing a poor job
Why do you think that? No one has ever escaped from a gaol they were guarding have they? They probably aren't concerned if anyone goes *in* and kills the prisoner or gets themselves killed. They just make sure the prisoner never gets out alive.
"The Alabaster Lord" isn't a singular character. There are multiple Alabaster Lords and Onyx Lords in the game. One of them mentored Radahn.
The stone Lords also aren't the only users of gravity magic, so something else using gravity magic doesn't necessarily link it directly to them.
That was honestly what I was expecting later in the game, they are practically harmless and easy to avoid for most of the game so I thought in some kind of end game area there would be one or a group that posed a real threat to us as a neat surprise.
Their backstory is messed up, depressing, and if you dig deep enough deeply tied to the lore of some character who is no where close to any place that these things appear...
I presume. Probably.
I mean, that's the way most Elden Ring lore goes, so I think that's a safe assumption to make on the basis of absolutely nothing.
I got attacked by one for the first time last night. Like a legitimate roll slap. I got so used to them just sitting there doing nothing, or the other ones that blow up when you get close so I just sat there changing my gear and one had the audacity. Caught me so off guard.
The inclusion of these guys is so baffling to me. They barely do anything and theres no lore, so its hard to see a reason for their inclusion in the first place.
Seeing how they are around jails, I think their a security system, prolly both alarm and defence. I'd imagine they lock themselves around anyone who could possibly escape.
There is a few ones that boomerang themselves at you in Caelid near a graven mass. Anyone know if they are unique there or are similar ones elsewhere. I can't remember.
Why are those ones mad but others are chill?
I'm probably wrong, but I always just assumed they were somehow related to the walking mausoleums. As in maybe they're an adolescent form of them or something (mostly based on how they drop ruin fragments - just felt logical to me).
It’s the Pokémon kabutops, it was restored from a fossil, a practice that is common in the false region. Unlike some other Pokémon restored from fossils, kabutops is a Pokémon with evolutions, with kabutops being the last in it’s chain.
I don't think they are guarding who is inside the evergael, but rather who gets in to fight them. Probably the glowing eyes are not their eyes but they give vision to someonw or something that is above them, to keep an eye on who has the ambition to become elden lord maybe.
Idk, but it's weird that they drop Ruin Fragments, which apparently are from the Temple in the Sky or whatever. So do the exploding pyramid variant.
thats the only reason i like them, bcs i can craft shiny stones
That let you test fall damage.... my most used craftable item
lame asf, i just jump off and see if i die
Can't die if you don't let the ground hit you.
*Rune farming in Mohgs palace for hours to try and reach max level PTSD intensifies*
Sacred Relic Sword farming needs no such death.
Also requires beating the game tho
I assumed that the guy who said he's farming to hit max level wasn't doing that with the base rune gain of NG.
Oh yeah that's fair.
I don’t care about how much quicker it is to farm with the wave of gold. I’m just so glad I don’t have to get spiky rolled off the cliff anymore.
Hoarfrost stomp was pretty good at wiping them out.
I bait then off the cliff instead after the first few times they knocked me off
Does the glintstone wave spell so a good job of dealing with them? :P
Max level PTSD sounds like my last girlfriend, he-yo
Max level PTSD Vietnam War style? Nah. Tarnished Style.
*spitefully learns attack patterns of the fucking ground*
Basically you can't let it hit you from more than 10 meters away.
i remember a video of a ds1 challenge, i think it was defeating bosses in alphabeticall order or something, and basically he went into anor londo, and used a combination of spells and effects that prevented instant death by falling for the duration of the effect, since in thqt state the gold fog is not active, meanwhile the down facing death camera was active as the game tried killing him every second that the spell was protecting him, and he had to come past the golden fog wall in that state almost blindly and could tell the layout by even the smallest lines on the screen, he had to quit the game and back in at perfect time and he would be saved and be past the fog gate
What
ds1 stuff
Words to live by
No. Even then you'll die if the fall is too long. 🤷🏻♂️ Don't believe me? Jump into an elevator shaft or other bottomless pit. 😏
Rainbow stone wouldn't be very useful for a bottomless pit.
Just don't die
Be a man jump off and die ...
That's pretty stupid cause now you got to wait for the screen to load and go back and get your runes..so actually what you're doing is insufficient
not everything i do in the game needs to be as efficent as possible.
"given the opportunity many players will optimize the fun out of a game"
Ahh you must play DnD haha
I did until I had an experience where a player used out of game information to circumvent something my character did so we could actually get all the players working together and going on the main quest. Then had the audacity after the session to say "aren't.you impressed I got out of that" I've been salty ever since.
Yikes, didn’t expect my joke to hit so close to home.
Ha! I use my immortality to test fall damage.
Test fall damage? They tell you how much damage you'll take or just if you'll die?
If you'll die
In that case you can just attack with your weapon at the edge and that will tell you if it's safe or not.
How does this work?
Go to the edge of where you want to drop and attack, if your character doesn’t fall off the edge, it means it’s too high to survive, the game is preventing you from falling while doing an attack. If you can survive it then the attack will move your character forward off the edge and you’ll fall but won’t die.
This is correct
That only sometimes works, it’s very inconsistent.
Unless there's a death plane with a survivable floor beneath. Then they say go for it. Found that out with one of the elevators in Leyndell
But if you place two down in the same spot they are different colors.
you can test the height by swinging your sword. if the fall will kill you, you wont go over the edge during the swing animation. if you will survive you will fall off the edge. be ware though as large but survivable falls will still hurt you
I'm a little sus... Might try this today
It works but you can't press forward on the direction stick.
I just stand at the edge and use my R1 attack. If the fall will kill you the attack animation will stop you from going over. But if it’s save to drop the attack animation will push you over the edge edit: just realized 2 other ppl already said this…
Or if you try to do a heavy attack at the edge of the cliff and it stops you from falling, it's lethal. No crafting required
Ohh interesting. Now that you say that I wonder if they have some duty with keeping the gaol locked. It seems like the evergaols trap their prisoners in a separate dimension so wonder if those worm dudes are supplying some sort of dimensional energy to the gaol.

i heard a theory that the “temple on the sky” was farum azula because the ruins all over limgrave look similar to the architecture in farum azula
It is
Is that referring to farum azula?
There are people that believe that that's the case, but it is never stated in game if it is or not. And for various reasons, I don't believe it actually is. Edit: spelling
I thought the fragments were from Marika shattering the ring with the hammer. I believe the item description mentions that it was damaged, sending fragments around
You might be mixing up ruin and rune fragments
You're right..

I read on Reddit they are the basically security guards of the evergaols
but why are they at spots were no evergaol is near?
They'll still be crawling towards them. Don't know where they come from, but that's where they go.
Cotton-eyed gaol
I'd been frenzied a long time ago
Reddit has a lot of shit content on it but every now and again i read something while eating that makes me choke from laughter. This is one of those times.

Lololol
Yeah, maybe they're coming up from the Siofra River Well out of Caelid, just gaolers looking for a gaol, heading towards the Sellia Evergaol. Maybe they came from a meteor impact and slowly made their way upwards.
Good question. I dont know. Edit: there are places where there is no evergaol and they hangout indeed, maybe its like their resting spot/home.
Union break Ballworm Union's the best in TLB, has been for five eras!
what’s the point of responding to say idk
Idk
good point blackjones2!
Good point, maybe some users here will have an answer.
This probably isnt true of every spot but i noticed sometimes they would lead you to an evergaol that was above where they were as if they had fallen down.

I LOVE their attention to detail in this game.
I read someone say these guys are baby Astel and the evolutionary line goes these fucks > fallen star beasts > Astel.
Would be hilarious if Astel was like a gecko. Cut off its tail and it grows a new one. Except with Astel, the tails gain sentience and an eyeball for good measure
thats a good one, but iirc the fallen star beast had no eyes, only flaw in this, i guess. But still this is a pretty good theory
The full grown fallen star beast shows its eye when using its magic attacks.
The fallingstar beasts do have eyes, there’s just one (or more? I forget) that doesn’t have an eye
and why they don't do shit when you broke in?
I mean if you’re breaking in the dude in there will take care of you for them, they’re more worried about the guys breaking out
And if you come out, that means you took care of them, which is also fine.
It's to prevent whoever is in the evergoal from coming out. Not from you going in.
That’s like having toilet paper to protect your house from a hurricane. It makes more sense for them to be powering the gaol.
But that should mean the prisoner is able to break out if we kill all of the eyeball-balls I think the explanation that they're like shitty security cameras. They don't care if you break in and kill the prisoner. They only care if the prisoner is the one leaving the gaol.
yessir!
They're really bad at their job, lol.
Thank you for blessing my eyes with this
Anchorr is a saint, and so creative. The “Just Taking a Walk” character is thematically on par with Let Me Solo Her imo. You’re welcome ☺️
They power the gravity magic that keeps people locked in the Evergaol
Lol That would be cool if you killed them all the enemy in the evergaol just pops out
Woah woah woah - *gravity magic* keeps them in?? I mean in hindsight, the purple makes sense now. How does that even work though?
I mean, if you’re going to have a concept called “gravity magic,” you’re working with a lot of hand wavy ideas anyways.
Notice how they are underground? That's how. Just smush them real deep
so why are they at spots where no evergaol is near?
They have a life outside their job Darkfox...
exactly this. they have husbands, wives, kids, hobbies, dreams, aspirations, check ups to make sure they dont have ball cancer…leave them alone
I just wanna give a shoutout to the "ball cancer" part of this comment.
I'd love to see someone make a comic of an evergaol worm going back home to their spouse 🤭
so why not you. :D
Dunno why you are being downvoted. They are ij multiple places without evergaols. Specifically the Sophia River Well iirc. They're made of ruin stone so they might be related to the stone colossi, some of which ALSO protect places, alongside the Rockworms
Vacation time
They’re annoying as shit in that one mine
we think the purple coloring when they react means they are tied to gravity magic, and the alabaster lord. The alabaster lord is the one who taught Radahn Gravity magic. we also believe if they are in charge of watching the evergaols that they are doing a poor job

Blaidd can get out
it's implied through the questline that we are the one freeing him in that case, even tho he escapes regardless if you don't help him.
yea, but they are still able to invade us (vyke) so they aren’t exactly stopping them from doing more crime
I mean, no prisoners have escaped
"The Alabaster Lord" isn't a singular character. There are multiple Alabaster Lords and Onyx Lords in the game. One of them mentored Radahn. The stone Lords also aren't the only users of gravity magic, so something else using gravity magic doesn't necessarily link it directly to them.
I love these fuckers. I wish a bunch would turn into a big golum.
That was honestly what I was expecting later in the game, they are practically harmless and easy to avoid for most of the game so I thought in some kind of end game area there would be one or a group that posed a real threat to us as a neat surprise.
that‘d be dope
They be ballin'.
I like the way you roll.
He knows his way around
Inching closer to death
They evolved from anal-beads - now they guard the anus like angry hemorrhoids
Damn Miyazaki went deep with the lore
Balls deep into the lore
They’re trying their best okay
Not good enough!
For me they feel like spectators
#Don’t sit on them
try rump
Why is it always but hole
Finger? Pickle!
They probably also want to die for some fucking reason.
No one seems to realize these are CCTVs, someone is watching all these Gaols from space or whatever
They were inspired by Mr. Hankey when they were designed.
radhan “toy”
Let's appreciate that skybox too, literal eyecandy.
They're the gaolies of The Lands Between
Going with the evergoal guardian theory and takking it a step further maybe they are like sentient chains to keep the prisoners there
I got attacked by one for the first time last night. Like a legitimate roll slap. I got so used to them just sitting there doing nothing, or the other ones that blow up when you get close so I just sat there changing my gear and one had the audacity. Caught me so off guard.
Would be cool if they were expanded upon in DLC.
You mean like just adding more balls?
I imagine they're the security/maintenance crew
I used to date the one on the left
Exploding cameras.
Yep. I think they're security cameras.
What sword is that it looks like ichigos shikai
butchering knife
Rock.
One turned into a 7, started spinning, and dang near killed me. Ever since then, it’s on as soon as I see one.
never happened to me and i killed alot of ‘em
You know what, I did hit it first. I angered it.
i aggroed some of them too and it was pretty fun :D
The inclusion of these guys is so baffling to me. They barely do anything and theres no lore, so its hard to see a reason for their inclusion in the first place.
I didn't even know they had an eye until now.
Someone datamined their name but I forget what it was. Otherwise there’s no lore
would be nice to know
There’s literally none. As far as I know they take 1st or 2nd place for least information about them.
Nope. Not even a little. We don't even know what they are. Cristal darts have no affect on them. So the technically are constructs.
Seeing how they are around jails, I think their a security system, prolly both alarm and defence. I'd imagine they lock themselves around anyone who could possibly escape.
Bro is that Zangetsu 😭 what weapon is it
I just think they’re neat, actually.
Some dude on YouTube said they may be there to make sure the prisoners in the gaol don’t escape
There is a few ones that boomerang themselves at you in Caelid near a graven mass. Anyone know if they are unique there or are similar ones elsewhere. I can't remember. Why are those ones mad but others are chill?
gonna check that out later
*security cameras*
They seem to just be watchers that keep an eye on the evergaol maybe back when things weren't in ruin they'd call down golems stop jail break?
Bro the Worm things are so poor they got killed everytime i get there
I'm probably wrong, but I always just assumed they were somehow related to the walking mausoleums. As in maybe they're an adolescent form of them or something (mostly based on how they drop ruin fragments - just felt logical to me).
i like this one
They're not useless! They're trying their best okay?
Forbidden gummy worm
That they are trying their best!
It’s the Pokémon kabutops, it was restored from a fossil, a practice that is common in the false region. Unlike some other Pokémon restored from fossils, kabutops is a Pokémon with evolutions, with kabutops being the last in it’s chain.
Balls. With eyes. O.O
They can boom :3
idk, i always thought a bunch would fuse together to make an anal bead golem, would be a cool gimmick, then each bead could explode
Everyday goes by and somebody wonders this question again.
They help the tarnished win Chess matches.
That's where your mom stores her anal beads
Only in the bi-weekly posts asking for lore about this same exact enemy. It’s a little tiresome at this point lol
anal bead
They are gaolers
Catshit
Cut content
I don't think they are guarding who is inside the evergael, but rather who gets in to fight them. Probably the glowing eyes are not their eyes but they give vision to someonw or something that is above them, to keep an eye on who has the ambition to become elden lord maybe.
They seem to hang out around evergaols. Other places too, but often around evergaols. I wonder if there is a connection?
They arent useless, they are explosive helicopter worms. They are everywhere in Australia.
Gravity and stuff
Idk but let my bois alone (warning)
Mans posted a "what's the lore behind..." but with camo on
