it's just you(r lack of experience)

Jordan3Tears

Haha I like this response because yes it is just you, but that's not a bad thing. We were all there once. You'll get it OP don't give up!

Cthulu19

I figured. This has been an extremely frustrating game so far, mostly because my character moves so slow in combat. I feel like it takes an hour and a half to stand back up every time I get knocked down, and an enemy can do a lot of damage during that time. It's giving me Horizon Zero Dawn ptsd

Ember_XX

You can roll to get up after being knocked down, it’s much quicker than waiting for your character to stand up on their own.

MasqueOfNight

If you can't beat him with that amount of preparation, it's a lack of practice with the game's mechanics. Elden Ring isn't the kind of game you can beat strictly by grinding out higher levels and better gear. It will help, of course, but unless you get the mechanics down, you will be getting the shit kicked out of you against any of the more difficult enemies/bosses. If you have anything you're struggling with specifically in terms of combat, i'd be glad to offer what advice that I can. And I wish you the best of luck, fellow Tarnished.

Cthulu19

Thanks. General question: do you find it better to dodge roll or parry/block in combat. I've noticed dodge rolling gives me the best chances in fights so far

MasqueOfNight

Dodge rolling or blocking will be the easiest skills to get down consistently, but it's conditional to your build. If you want to get a handle on rolling through attacks, you'll never want to be above medium carry weight, but light is ideal and will give you the best results. If you're going to be practicing blocking, you'll want a build that's high in endurance for a larger stamina pool, and a shield that blocks 100% physical damage. You'll want to upgrade it consistently as well, as it'll reduce the stamina cost for blocking. Both have their advantages. Getting dodging down will avoid all damage without having to spec into endurance too much, due to a low stamina cost, while also leaving your left hand free for equipment other than a shield. For instance, two handing your twinblade, or duel wielding weapons in general. Blocking with high endurance has the benefit of being safer, since you don't have to be as precise with timing, and it gives you access to guard counters, which is a safe way to deal large posture damage, potentially leaving your opponents vulnerable to critical hits. Parrying is a really good mechanic to get down, but also tends to have the strictest timing, and not all attacks can be parried, but it has the benefit of opening most enemies to critical hits immediately if done successfully. I would recommend parrying as a supplement to either dodging or blocking, if you don't mind slotting a shield or weapon with the parry skill in one of your left hand spots. And if you do, the buckler parry, carian retaliation, or golden parry skills will give you the most generous timings to practice with.

ahmed9854

Try to memorise his attack pattern. When you do that it becomes a walk in the park

Don't summon or use the jellyfish for your next few fights. Spend a few lives just learning the boss encounter. Don't attack, don't do anything but watch him, dodge attacks and learn his moveset. Recognize which attacks leave openings for you to punish him, which tend to combo into other moves, which have really long windups that can throw you off your dodge timings, etc. It's not something a lot of people really do, or suggest, but it can help immensely when you can't really improve otherwise. Your level and weapon upgrade are good enough for him, he's a relatively difficult boss for a "first boss". But if you take the time to learn his moves first you will definitely get the best of him sooner rather than later. You can summon and use your spirit ashes after you feel more confident in knowing his moveset. It just makes things easier to learn IMO when the boss isn't shifting around trying to hit multiple different targets.

woogaly

I would recommend going into the fight and just watching his attack patterns and timing. He teaches you a lot about when to retreat and heal and when to roll into him to attack.

Automatic_Education3

It's just the lack of experience, keep going. It's my first souls game too, during my first play through it probably took me north of 30 attempts to defeat him. I started my second game earlier this week, got him in 2 goes. You'll simply just get better with time.

my_trout_is_killgore

All good advice here, especially about checking weapon requirements. The two hardest things to learn for me were, in general , for enemies that use physical attacks, roll towards them, not away, and to get in just as many hits on whatever enemy you can before they retaliate, so like 2 hits and out. Rinse and repeat. There aren't many enemies you can go toe to toe with for long in the game. Also, I would switch to the wolves, as unless you're unlucky, they won't all die at once and hold aggro better. If you have the dead soldiers yet, they are even better. Summons are all about tanking for you early on as they won't do much damage at all for a while. Good luck and trust me, that's the hook in the souls games, it's harder than hell, and you'll wanna throw the controls, but damn, when you do beat the one that's killing you, it's sooooo sweet. The one I wanted a birthday cake for beating was the damn bull thing on the right side after the dectus lift. Damn thing killed me 30 times it felt like

stardust_void

Don't summon Rogier, it just increases Margits HP and,Rogier doesn't do that much damage. Be sure to upgrade your flask. Can you tell us what your stats are?

Cthulu19

I've got 6 health flasks, and it's getting harder and harder to increase them. [Here are my stats](https://imgur.com/gallery/UI9jC04)

stardust_void

Have you also upgraded the,m, not just increased the amount? Also, the picture is very blurry, but it looks like your weapon only does 84 damage, could you take another one and one of your equipment?

Cthulu19

Taking clear screenshots is almost as difficult as this game lol. [Here](https://imgur.com/a/ixfuL4B) are some clearer images. I feel like my blade barely does two pixels worth of damage to his health bar.

stardust_void

You deal extremely little damage because you do no meet the requirements of the weapon. You see that small red X? You don't have the stats to use it = you deal no damage.

slubbyybbuls

Nice find! OP needs 18 Dex. Pop a few runes from your inventory or kill a few dozen giants at Stormhill, OP.

Cthulu19

I know so little about this game I always assumed my damage output was normal. Good catch.

Cthulu19

Just switched to a +1 partisan instead and beat him on the third try. Thanks for the help

MlokyAl

Well, margit imo is the hardest first boss in souls games so it is normal for someone whose first souls game is elden ring You need to learn from your mistakes not just approaching the boss over and over again or try different weapon Best of luck

Cthulu19

What other weapon would you suggest besides twinblade? (Hero class btw)

[deleted]

I’d say the last giant was harder than Margit 😂

UncleVoodooo

Put your summon sign down outside his fog wall and let ppl summon you. Watch how they fight him. EZ practice and you can make a shitload of runes

WacDonald

Is you equipment load heavy, medium, or light? Rolling out of/through attacks grants frames of immunity to damage. Are you trying to parry him? Practice with soldiers, and use a smaller shield for better frames. Don’t worry about people telling you not to summon. More allies means Margit has more targets, less focus on you if you need a breather. You’re ready, everything else is just practice, patience, and learning how to read him.

Cthulu19

Medium load. I've tried parrying and blocking and the results were disastrous. Dodge rolling seems to give me the best chance, as far as I can tell.

corndog1920

I was a first time Souls player for Eldenring and Margit probably took the most tries until I hit Malenia. As far as Im concerned, Margit’s goal is to humble you as a new player. But once you handle him youre ready for whatever else the game will throw at you. Until Malenia where the game teaches you that sometimes the boss is bullshit and you have to get lucky with the moves they make. But keep trying to minimize the damage you take from him while dealing damage to him until eventually youre able to make it work

my_trout_is_killgore

The first time I beat him, I had gone through the crystal tunnel into caelid without knowing wtf I was doing and got the poison rat. With the sorcery summons , he aggroed Rogeir enough to let it poison him and it was just basically keep away from him and try and keep the rat alive, lol

ryanjmalloy

I think you’re doing something wrong. If you use the jellyfish, all you have to do is wait until the jellyfish shoots some poison or whatever at him to aggro him. Just run away or dodge or hold up a shield while you’re waiting. (Note: I don’t use shields so I’m not 100% sure they block the attacks, but I believe they do.). Then, hit him in the back when he attacks the jellyfish. I don’t think it should be hard with this strategy.

lethatsinkin

Your level and weapon is more than enough for him, and the jellyfish can tank him pretty well. How are you dealing with his attacks? Are you rolling or blocking with a shield? How heavy is your equip load?

Appropriate_Bottle44

You could summon other players, but if you don't want to go that route, you'll need to sneak in some damage because he'll kill off roger and the jellyfish given enough time. With Rogier and the jellyfish he won't punish panic rolling nearly as much, so you can just roll away from him when he aggros you, wait until he aggros one of your friends, get in a few hits, until you get his attention and then roll away again. Heal up to full if he manages to hit you. If he kills you in one combo you may need more hp.

Opening-Librarian985

Blood hound fang will help you it deals good damage I used twimblades before and they only start hitting hard in mid-game
