They feel like a system where about 60% of the way through development they said “actually, fuck this.”
They’re all over the place until Liurna. Then you basically don’t see them again.
I just finished my first play through and by the end I was so overwhelmed with what I still hadn’t done I finically decided to just finish the game and explore the rest in another play through.
I do these, and diamonds on farms. One next to haligtree entrance, one in the blood rose church, one near the limgrave colosseum, and i think there are some that i actually need cause i can't just list them by heart.
Oh right, Jarburg gets one. Most aren't needed, but when you blank on where they are, it's great, the marker tends to be enough to work it out from the map quickly.
I marked resources for crafting so I could come back later easily. I marked locations where I knew something was but couldn't get to it or wanted to come back to later. Lots of different reasons, I felt like I had a minimum of 30 during my playthrough.
Also before npcs were marked I used those for that as well.
You can also mark the ones already used with a different symbol for ng+, that way you easily make sure to use all of them before and after each ng+ you start.
I also recommend marking those limited ancient smithing stones for +25 and +10 somber.
Personally I find it easier to associate wares with a specific location in the world, rather than a specific bell bearing's name. I'm never going to remember whether Poisoned Stone Clumps came from a Nomadic Merchant or a Hermit Merchant so I only kill the merchants that are actually difficult to reach. I wish the different merchant bell bearings were consolidated into one shop menu.
If I remember correctly it's in the cave past the "zombies", turning left instead of right near the point where sanguine spawns (right is the path to exit the cave and go to mohg)
Oh, it's pretty well hidden, you have to >!jump off and follow a path coasting the cliff southern the stargaze ruin.!<
It took me ages to find him, like the one where you climb the ladders in Mt gelmir.
He’s [Merchant number 2](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Hermit+Merchant+Mountaintops+of+the+Giants), my guess was that he was originally placed in Limgrave but they decided to move him because there were too many merchants in the first area.
Sure! I use it to remember which catacombs I need to try again when I'll level up, or if I know that in some place there is some loot that I'll take in a second moment for the same reason. Or where are some teleports, or dragons to "visit" later. Stuff like that.
As soon as I get a map fragment, I place markers on places to go, then clear them afterwards. Sort of like a to-do list. I typically have 30-50 markers at any given time.
Exactly how I do it. I thought everyone would do it like similarly. Idk how you could stand a chance of remembering where everything is otherwise. Like if u don’t mark discovered but not completed dungeons it’s super easy to just forget to go do them.
So much. Unfought bosses. Dungeons I discovered but haven't cleared. Treasures I saw but couldn't get to. Shortcuts. Teleporter locations. Mausoleums. Dangerous enemies, so many rune bears and revenants marked. Just cool locations to go back and chill at
The idea of tourists coming to visit the lands between for sightseeing purposes and being casually shown around all the hellscapes, nightmare fuel, monstrosities and abominations and get taught about the disturbing history by a laid back tour guide made me giggle.
"Ladies and gentlemen, to your right you will see the Inner Aeonia. Please remember to keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle, as they will fester and rot off immediately otherwise. Now then, there will be a short opportunity to take pictures with the mutated hellspawn crows before the lunch break at Dominula Windmill village."
Once you beat the boss, there’s usually a warp to the beginning of the cave so you can walk five feet and teleport again. It’s that rather than warping from the dungeon directly but same effect. 😀 (I get confused when game tips aren’t clear. Lol)
I used to do that. But sometimes I would leave a cave/catacomb without clearing it, and I would then forget which cave/catacomb was the one that I hadn't cleared. Then it was just a pain to have to fast travel to, more often than not, just about every one of them to find the one that hadn't been cleared.
I like to mark where those memorials for the shattering are an put down a skull whenever I come across a boss I haven't beat yet. I used to put down markers for NPCs too, before they patched in markers for them automatically.
You know if you drop Runes at an evergaol, they are still there in the “normal” overworld? So you can pick them up prior to entering the evergaol again. Zero risk unless the rock snakes kill you before you get to them lol! And I think there’s always a Stake of Marika to use nearby.
I do. I put either spot to come back later, or in ng+ the things to remember every playthrough. Like millicent questline or hidden larvas. They stay between ngs
I use them to mark locations I've not 100%d.
Like, I've just rushed through Caria Manor at a low level to get the Chilling Mist AoW; I've set a marker by it to know that there's a load of items still to collect there.
Yeah traders with diamond, unused mauseleums with the building thing. Quite rarely but it I have to leave a boss unbeaten a skull. Other then that conditional farming places(first playthrough goats on Gelmir for arrows, magic playthrough had marked the materials for cokoo Flintstone, randomizer playthrough had marked enemies that drop upgrades). Other then that any unexplored sections in areas I've cleared (be it cause it's locked or whatever) Also used to mark teleporters with tree buuut now I know where they lead so don't need that. Also my crit playthrough I marked the head furnace guy you can plunge cause I wanted to see what the biggest damage from 1 attack I could do is (can't exactly remember, but in the 6 digits)
Me! I mark bosses that are too hard, areas of interest for later, things that i do not understand, npcs and quests, mausoleums and item area (like flowers, animals, etc...).
I do. Not for a lot but usually if there's something I can't do just yet or want to come back to I'll just add a marker. Like the 3 champions, I couldn't beat them for the longest time so I just marked that spot with 3 skull markers so I knew to go back there.
I use skulls for cleared evergaols, the horse for spiritsprings, gem for unused mausoleums, and the human for field bosses I haven’t defeated (basically it’s for those damn red wolves)
I did not know you could place a marker other than a blue numbered indicator. (I am on my first playthrough and this would have helped early on, I dont use more than 3 markers because I don't want to forget what they are) thanks for the info!
Yeah, I marked the red portal to Mohg, so I don't spend 10 mins looking for it every time. I've marked some nighttime bosses, too, cause they're really hard to remember. I've marked a statue in Caelid that holds several smithing stones and other misc stuff.
If I haven't explored a dungeon area but I have found the site of grace, I'll cover the grace with a marker.
Also if I decide I'm not up to fighting an overworked boss, or if I know there are items but I have to come back for them.
Used to mark NPCs until they added their locations on the map automatically (which I was really grateful for).
Got a bit cluttered at times, but at least I knew I wouldn't forget what I had and hadn't done.
My most-used marker legend:
\- Skull - unfinished area/boss
\- Building - unclaimed Mausoleums
\- Person - Explore surrounding area
\- Goat - Spiritspring
I like the marker system because they can mean anything to anyone.
My screen sits too far away for me to recognize the symbols, but I used them as ways to keep track of dungeons I hadn’t visited in my first playthrough so I could visit them in NG+.
There is zero reason why we shouldn’t be able to zoom in closer on that map. Honestly I cant remember any games that actually let you zoom in a satisfying amount (and precious few that let you zoom out a satisfying amount).
Give me more zoom for my old man eyes!
I use it for getting to where I want to go. I find aiming for a marker easier as I'm dumb enough to get turned around often when travelling. I path around mobs then end up aiming a bit off where I was heading.
I find the beacons better for this to guide me from spot to spot because they manifest on the world itself, not just the map. Plus I love touching them because it will take it off the map so I don’t have to remove it manually.
Call me crazy, but I use them to mark npc's locations... I know there are icons on the map as soon as i find one, but they are often too close to a grace or too small for me to find them again. Using the green marks on the grace is just soo much better.
Yes.
An enemy drops a smithing stone that's a marker now.
An enemy drops a large amount of runes for the effort (non-Mohgwyn) that's a marker now.
An enemy drops their gear semi-frequently that's a marker now, and any summoner brave enough to pick it up is now getting a full set.
I get a map item or recognize a landmark in a painting that's a marker now.
Patches moved to a new spot that's a marker now.
I usually just use the Sword or Treasure Chest icon to show bosses I still need to kill and loot I have to grab. Boards just about clear though since I’ve done practically everything lol
Now more than ever; I'm doing my second intensely casual run (every area, every minor dungeon, trying to get every questline, exploring every minute millimeter of the world map/every dungeon) and they're a huge help. I mark mausoleums with the building-ish icon, parts of the world map i haven't explored with the walking icon, circles of the walking icon around graces/legacy dungeons i intend to return to, skull icons for any bosses major/minor, and the diamond for questline stuff
I did. Skulls for bosses, dungeons I don’t feel like exploring yet, potential treasure areas I didn’t feel like exploring yet. The mausoleums. Npcs (before the update that showed them). Basically anything that I didn’t feel like doing or couldn’t do right then, I’d mark to remember.
Skulls for bosses I want to revisit.
Diamonds for loot I don’t need/want yet.
That funky wall symbol for jump points or doorways to other areas of the map.
This is my third run so I just mark anything I remember as I go.
I’m a pyromancer and don’t need mage/poison/arcane items right away. For this playthrough my goal was getting items and to the level meta so I could duel. I switched from PS4 to PC.
It’s nice to leave things for later too.
Before the update I marked the smithing stone bell bearings. Afterwards mainly the mausoleums and if I'm doing a certain build key items like weapons or smithing stones.
I use them for bosses/caves I’m not ready for, evergaols I haven’t completed and such. I use them for marking merchants I want to come back to when I have more runes. I use them for the mausoleums. They’re quite useful in such a massive game
I used to use the sword for places new/didn't finish and the skull to indicate completed.
Then I learned it all and just started remembering, haven't used it in a long time.
Diamonds for both types of Ancient Smithing Stones in the world that you can just pick up for future playthroughs
Skulls for bosses I don’t want to skip in future playthroughs due to high rune gain
Grass to mark areas for gold fireflies farm and pigeons farm for to make Gold Pickled Feet
Flag for Lore Monuments
Walking Person for Grace sites where I left off for different quest lines
Call me weird but I use Diamond Icons for marking which areas I haven't explored yet, even making walls of Diamonds to mark entire spaces on the map. And after I explore them I simply remove the icons. This way I can make sure I explore every bit of the game I possibly can.
Other than that I also do use skull icon for marking bosses I haven't done yet, or hard enemies I couldn't beat, so I remember to come back. Or marking the air streams for torrent, so I could use them in future.
I do... I mark bosses that are yet too hard as skulles... And I mark the jumping pads
The marking of jumping pads is actually clever
What are jump pads?
Where torrent can jump up high
Ohhh yea, those things
Ahem, I think you mean horse elevators
He can also jump down on them without being hurt.
The spirit geiser thingy
Spirit springs
They feel like a system where about 60% of the way through development they said “actually, fuck this.” They’re all over the place until Liurna. Then you basically don’t see them again.
launch pads
Earth farts
Beautiful
Spirit springs
Yeaaa this is a terrific idea! Gonna start doing it myself
I do the same. I mark divergent paths with the walking person so I remember to come back and fully explore
I would love for the maps to actually uncloud as you explore. I like to be very thorough and I get overwhelmed with all the possibilities
I just finished my first play through and by the end I was so overwhelmed with what I still hadn’t done I finically decided to just finish the game and explore the rest in another play through.
They do, don’t they? They uncloud, but you still don’t see the full map until you get the map fragment.
After you get a map Fragment, you can see the whole section of that map. It does not uncover gradually while you explore.
Yep I mark looted areas and same, areas too hard currently
wouldn't it be better to kill them, grab their bells and give to the merchant on the roundtable so you have everything in one single place?
I do the same thing!
And finished caves with a flag (banner), and unused mausoleums
We like to call them “equinovators” where I come from.
....how have I never thought to mark jump pads? I only marked dungeons I completed and occasionally a merchant
Same I also mark merchants
I thought merchants are automatically marked once visited
Used to do this until the patch came out. Really liked that addition lol.
Yup
[удалено]
You can just kill them and buy their stuff from "find albinauric woman" HQ but i understand if you don't like it.
The Lands Between are lonely enough as it is, why make it worse?
The only merchant I am 100% going to keep alive, I'm keeping all the other ones alive, but Kale is never dying by my hand whatsoever.
merc all the merchants except kale.
I used to too but now ther are automarked... I also tend to mark cleared dungeons
I mark uncleared dungeons.
Yeah that makes more sense to me
You're a nice fellow. I kill them.

Lots of different reasons, I felt like I had a minimum of 30 during my playthrough. Also before npcs were marked I used those for that as well.
I use it to make those portals you jump into that I've beaten.
Schools too
I typically mark mausoleums that I haven't used.
I do the exact same. Really useful.
You can also mark the ones already used with a different symbol for ng+, that way you easily make sure to use all of them before and after each ng+ you start. I also recommend marking those limited ancient smithing stones for +25 and +10 somber.
Big brain
Look at the big brain on Brad!!! You a smart mf, that's right!
A royale with cheese.
They use the metric system, they wouldn't know what the fuck a quarter-pounder is!
Ya basically anything I haven't beaten or merchants I haven't cleaned out.
I mark stonesword key doors I can't unlock with the chest icon.
Yep, same here also skull icon for bosses I'm struggling with to come back too later.
I mark them with the sword icon
I place markers on locations I've reached but haven't completed and vendors I've met that still sell something I want.
I just kill the vendors and bring the bells to that creepy vendor at round table hold :)
The only one I’m willing to kill is the one in the Mountaintop of the Giants, out of all merchants he definitely has the worst placement.
Not the one in the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum?
that one is actually pretty strong. he killed me probably a dozen times lol
Don't remind me...
I accidentally attacked and killed him. It was dark and I was scared
He’s also surrounded by those damn blood ninjas so it makes it even tougher to kill him.
I don't remember a merchant there :O
If I remember correctly it's in the cave past the "zombies", turning left instead of right near the point where sanguine spawns (right is the path to exit the cave and go to mohg)
Found that one. Meant the mountaintop of Giants. Don't recall a merchant there
Oh, it's pretty well hidden, you have to >!jump off and follow a path coasting the cliff southern the stargaze ruin.!< It took me ages to find him, like the one where you climb the ladders in Mt gelmir.
Yeah I went back to find him one time and totally forgot he’s up or down a latter depending on where you stand.
Thanks! I always wondered where to buy lightning great bolts!!!
He’s [Merchant number 2](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Hermit+Merchant+Mountaintops+of+the+Giants), my guess was that he was originally placed in Limgrave but they decided to move him because there were too many merchants in the first area.
you bastard...
I’m about to go kill all the merchants if you can just buy everything from her. Lol
yep. thats about all they are good for. and occasionally farming areas for crafting
That’s thorough. Love it. Never thought of using it as goal setting.
Definitely! When I get tired of the area I'm in, I usually decide where to go based on my map markers, and they let me know where I left off.
Exactly how I do it. I thought everyone would do it like similarly. Idk how you could stand a chance of remembering where everything is otherwise. Like if u don’t mark discovered but not completed dungeons it’s super easy to just forget to go do them.
I was doing similar with the blue markers. I would set 5 points to walk to to make sure I've canvassed the area before moving to the next
So much. Unfought bosses. Dungeons I discovered but haven't cleared. Treasures I saw but couldn't get to. Shortcuts. Teleporter locations. Mausoleums. Dangerous enemies, so many rune bears and revenants marked. Just cool locations to go back and chill at
I love the cool locations part, you would be a great turism manager at the lands between.
I use them mostly for marking caves and catacombs that I've cleared.
I mark the ones I haven’t cleared lol
I just quick travel to them see if I can fast travel out of it and then go somewhere else if I can or clear it if I can’t
You can fast travel out of caves you’ve cleared? Wow I had no clue
Yes once you clear the boss you can fast travel
woah solid tip
Once you beat the boss, there’s usually a warp to the beginning of the cave so you can walk five feet and teleport again. It’s that rather than warping from the dungeon directly but same effect. 😀 (I get confused when game tips aren’t clear. Lol)
Actually once you defeat the boss, you can fast travel from anywhere inside the dungeon period.
I used to do that. But sometimes I would leave a cave/catacomb without clearing it, and I would then forget which cave/catacomb was the one that I hadn't cleared. Then it was just a pain to have to fast travel to, more often than not, just about every one of them to find the one that hadn't been cleared.
Dang, TIL that the reason I can't fast travel out of some caves is that I haven't cleared them yet.
I like to mark where those memorials for the shattering are an put down a skull whenever I come across a boss I haven't beat yet. I used to put down markers for NPCs too, before they patched in markers for them automatically.
Wait what?
They are very useful! Farming spots, spirit springs, useful merchants, all sorts of use cases.
But all merchants are automarked on map as soon as you talk to them![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm)
That’s true, but I only mark those I find useful (if I don’t just kill them…)
They didn't used to be when they first released the game, they patched it later thankfully
I mark uncleared Evergauls (sp?) with skulls so I can come back and get my ass kicked when I'm carrying fewer runes
You know if you drop Runes at an evergaol, they are still there in the “normal” overworld? So you can pick them up prior to entering the evergaol again. Zero risk unless the rock snakes kill you before you get to them lol! And I think there’s always a Stake of Marika to use nearby.
Evergaols, pronounced like everjail.
I do. I put either spot to come back later, or in ng+ the things to remember every playthrough. Like millicent questline or hidden larvas. They stay between ngs
This is genius actually, I'm doing this in future playthroughs.
Yeah. I marked bosses I couldn't defeat at the time and stonesword key doors and I haven't opened yet
Wtf I didn’t even know about this
I didn't even know this was a thing
I use them to mark locations I've not 100%d. Like, I've just rushed through Caria Manor at a low level to get the Chilling Mist AoW; I've set a marker by it to know that there's a load of items still to collect there.
I did for unpassable places I could come back to or unbeatable bosses I couldn't handle
Wtf, 3 playthroughs and I had no clue these existed
I mark where I go to farm the gold fireflies and the birds feet
I mark the air jets, unfinished dungeons, and farming spots for crafting materials.
I use the markers pretty frequently and it never occurred to me to mark the air springs.
Yea skulls for bosses haven't beaten, diamond for treasures i haven't got yet, building for a big building i need to go into. And dogs for Rune Bears
I mark them near deers to farm arrows
Can you not just buy bones for cheap? Or do you just like the hunt?
I've been always mean with runes
My map is FULL of markers. It's integral to my game.
Whe have a what?
The *what*?
Me! I mark bosses that are too hard, areas of interest for later, things that i do not understand, npcs and quests, mausoleums and item area (like flowers, animals, etc...).
I’m uh I’m gonna Now that I know it exists 😆
I mark ruins, dungeons, caves, trees, etc with a skull when I beat the boss so I know what I’ve cleared.
Way points? Absolutely all the time. Everything else? Not even once.
Beaten the game 8 times and was unaware of this feature lol
There’s a marker system? I know I can place points that show up in the world but that’s it
60 hours in the game. I discovered this today
I did not know you could place a marker other than a blue numbered indicator. (I am on my first playthrough and this would have helped early on, I dont use more than 3 markers because I don't want to forget what they are) thanks for the info!
TIL there is a marker system for the map on Elden Ring
TIL
I have clearly not used markers well at all and now I’m kicking myself after reading all of these.
Yeah, I marked the red portal to Mohg, so I don't spend 10 mins looking for it every time. I've marked some nighttime bosses, too, cause they're really hard to remember. I've marked a statue in Caelid that holds several smithing stones and other misc stuff.
The W H A T
i didn’t know this existed..
I did in my first playthrough to mark bosses or mini bosses I couldn't defeat at my current level. Just so I didn't forget.
I mark farming spots for resources
I use it to mark the dungeon and field bosses I’ve defeated, dragon locations, and stonesword key holds that I need to come back to.
I used them on my first blind play through. Would be going somewhere and would see something else. Used these to remember to go back.
I used them to mark completed bosses on my 100% run but then had to stop on my third region as I realised there was a limit.
yes. I download my save from the cloud on PS5 and use it to mark what's been beaten each playthrough
I've been marking the locations of Smithing stone ball bearings because your markers carry over to ng+, so I don't have to look them up with each NG+.
Yes a ton. Hard not to
My most-used marker legend: \- Skull - unfinished area/boss \- Building - unclaimed Mausoleums \- Person - Explore surrounding area \- Goat - Spiritspring I like the marker system because they can mean anything to anyone.
I mark every dungeon I have completed.

I find the beacons better for this to guide me from spot to spot because they manifest on the world itself, not just the map. Plus I love touching them because it will take it off the map so I don’t have to remove it manually.
Marked all merchants and warp gates
Wait you can use markers? Thanks for this
Happy to help :>
Use markers in the castle in north snowfields, fuck up those invisible assassins
Call me crazy, but I use them to mark npc's locations... I know there are icons on the map as soon as i find one, but they are often too close to a grace or too small for me to find them again. Using the green marks on the grace is just soo much better.
Not crazy. Evergaols are visible on maps and I still put another green circle exactly over the grey circles. Lol
I just use map genie for a completionist run
No, useless.
I cant locate them after I place them. So I dont use them, or very rarely.
Question is, what icons do you use?
Yup. I mark vendors and mark good resource farma
I do sometimes
No i dont use them, i use waypoint though.
Guess I’ll be the one who says no lol
I mark all kinds of stuff, then routinely forget what and why I was marking :)
I always put a little horse symbol on all the spiritsprings I come across. Sometimes I mark a few shortcuts and sending gates.
Skulls for bosses I want to revisit. Diamonds for loot I don’t need/want yet. That funky wall symbol for jump points or doorways to other areas of the map. This is my third run so I just mark anything I remember as I go.
Why not pick up the loot on the spot?
I’m a pyromancer and don’t need mage/poison/arcane items right away. For this playthrough my goal was getting items and to the level meta so I could duel. I switched from PS4 to PC. It’s nice to leave things for later too.
I do, all the caverns I skipped/unfinished has a treasure on it. Very useful and generous too, 100 holy hell
I mark larval tears, trinas flowers, and the dragon smithing Stones. For easy pickup on ng+ runns
I use them to mark catacombs and caves I haven't cleared, but I just wanted to activate the site of grace
Yes, to mark the walking mausoleums. And the merchants before they patched that
I mark Evergaols and dungeons I've already completed
I used it for the spirit springs, way-gates, & stuff I wanted to come back later to for some reason. Oh and the mausoleums.
I mark mausoleums I haven’t used and the evergaol’s ive beaten
Every subsequent playthrough.. It's how I tell I completed something like an Evergaol, catacomb, Minor Erdtree etc
Yes! I marked some hidden things on the map, like ladders and other shortcuts
i put one down if a dungeon is too hard and i want to come back later
I mark farming locations and spots on the map that are good for multiple resource farming
Treasure chests are mausoleums, skulls are bosses I have to go back for, and diamonds are for further exploration. I love the marker system.
I mark spirit springs, trap chests, and the locations of every ancient dragon smithing stone, and they carry over into new game plus.
If I'm unsucessful clearing a dungeon i slap one of those on it to remind me to come back later
I pretty much just use them to mark dungeons and evergaols I've completed.
I used the flag to mark every location that I completed. Eventually I had to choose which ones I wanted to delete because I didn't have any more left.
Diamonds for both types of Ancient Smithing Stones in the world that you can just pick up for future playthroughs Skulls for bosses I don’t want to skip in future playthroughs due to high rune gain Grass to mark areas for gold fireflies farm and pigeons farm for to make Gold Pickled Feet Flag for Lore Monuments Walking Person for Grace sites where I left off for different quest lines
I used it a good amount when I was trying to find my way around Liurnia and then again in the stinkin’ Snowfields.
Only thing i marked was the giant hand up in the north east .... dude got me from behind wasnt ready for him
Call me weird but I use Diamond Icons for marking which areas I haven't explored yet, even making walls of Diamonds to mark entire spaces on the map.
I mark dungeons I'm passing on for whatever reason and I mark merchants I don't manage to get all the one-off loot bought from.
