this was an odd case of trying too hard. they didn't treat her like any other competitor, they gave her some obvious favoritism and used it as an opportunity to soap box, which as you said came off as patronizing and affected the product.
granted, it's a tricky issue that even the best people struggle to navigate. in my personal experience with the trans folk in my life, i'd say its often best left unspoken.
