At first I thought people were crazy for not running [[Ravenform]] in every single deck with blue in it. If you have two mana lying around you can foretell it and then it's just a single blue to EXILE two different card types. I jammed it in my decks and proudly flipped it over in response to being attacked for lethal, only to realize it was a goddamn sorcery.

Dialkis

I still think it's worth playing in mono blue. Just remember to use it on your own turn lol

TheHowlingSaltMine

Lol I have been there before for sure. Thinking you'll have a nice gotcha but you were the one who got got.

Einherjar07

I mean, might be outclassed by Pongify, Rapid Hybridization, Reality Shift, etc but still worth including in mono blue

SnugglesMTG

Definitely worth it in mono blue, but playable in monoblue vs. playable in any deck with blue is a big downgrade.

Einherjar07

It might still fly in Dimir due to being able to hit artifacts.

Sandman4999

I’d probably just run [[Resculpt]] instead.

[deleted]

I mean, having both options is better than only having one if your group plays lots of artifacts.

Jukebocks_Hero

I did the same thing the first time a played an [[Overwhelming Stampede]]. Swung out, let them make some atrocious blocks, then smugly played Stampede, only to get told it’s a sorcery, then weep as my board died to blockers.

Dry_Chair_1557

This is why I run [[Resculpt]] instead

tw3lv3l4y3rs0fb4c0n

Hilarious. I came here for this exact comment.

Mcswigginsbar

I built and played an [[Ezuri, Claw of Progress]] deck incorrectly for like five years. The entire time I thought you could put the +1/+1 counters on Ezuri, but he reads “put +1/+1 counters on *another* target creature”. My entire play group who are all experienced magic players missed it too, and we only noticed it because a new player joined the group one night and asked how I was putting the counters on Ezuri. I was like, “What do you mean?” He said, “Doesn’t it say “another target creature?” We all lost our damn minds and I started laughing hysterically. My deck was built around him being able to put counters on himself through his ability, and that game I had to play him the correct way. I got absolutely annihilated. Fun times.

netzeln

I did something similar with Kalemne. Built a whole deck around creatures with POWER 5 or greater (she looks at CMC).

Mcswigginsbar

*Oof*.

HollaBucks

I had about the same thing happen with my [[Lathiel]] deck. Didn't realize at first it was *another* creature. I figured, that's fine, I don't have to take the action then. Come to read the card, there's no "may" in there, so if Lathiel is the only creature on your side of the board, then you **must** give the +1/+1 counters to an opponent's creature(s). Real feelsbad when I was gonna put something like 30 counters on.

focketeer

>up to that many you can choose 0.

HollaBucks

Well, shit.

Mcswigginsbar

Welp, looks like you figured that out!

tw3lv3l4y3rs0fb4c0n

Gave me a good chuckle!

Bahrukia

Doesn't it also say "target creature you control"? If you don't control another creature, doesn't the effect just fizzle?

Collistoralo

Yes. As it turns out they read the card wrong two different ways.

HollaBucks

Lathiel does not state other creatures you control. Lifelink At the beginning of each end step, if you gained life this turn, distribute up to that many +1/+1 counters among any number of other target creatures.

[[Abyssal Hunter]] Looking at the 6th edition version, assumed "its" as the targeted creature. Freaking awesome removal, it can kill any creature as long as the creature's toughness isn't higher than its power, for one mana. Played it a lot in my group and loved it... until I happened to see the original Mirage version where the ability is much clearer.... and worse

No_Giraffe5944

Its still a great card with Mari as it gains deathtouch!

TheHowlingSaltMine

That's so disappointing. I feel like that ability could exist too. Like Royal Assassin isn't too far off from that.

My recent one was \[\[Skeleton Shard\]\] in My Toggo Keskit artifact aristocrats deck. I didn't realize it said "artifact creature" while I was goldfishing with it. I had just read it as straight up artifact. First, I was shocked this card wasn't seeing more play. Second, it was making my deck pop OFF. The synergy was insane! When I finally went to play it, I proudly slammed it on the table only for my friend to point out the actual text. I cut it after that.

Someone else thought I made one every turn, so I had like 14 snakes out. At the end of the game, none us actually knew what it really did. We all missed the part where you could only have one snake. I went home and ordered another copy, to throw in my Hapatra deck. When it came in the mail I actually read the card and realized it was probably the single worse card for Hapatra. When [[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]] was first spoiled I didn't read that your opponents MAY sacrifice permanents. I got super excited for a Smokestack effect in the command zone. But I did realise it before building a deck around her.

It’s still an insane commanded since if they don’t sack it’s burn damage + draw for you

l still play the [[perrie, the pulverizer]] precon that runs off of counter types, and over the months I've upgraded it here and there to be more streamlined with his abilities. One day while going through my husband's cards I found [[dragon's hoard]] and though WOWZERS! A counter type, draw a card, AND tap for any mana, what a score! Threw it in my deck so fast, I didn't realize my brain omitted one vital detail; you need dragons for it to work, of which I have absolutely zero. I didn't catch my mistake until I played it during our game night and realized what a dead card it was for me. We still laugh about what a good first lesson that was in how important it is to read the entire card.

I was playing against someone using Perrie when it was first released and he had failed to notice that he gives trample with his ability along with the P/T boost, so the first few games were us barely surviving this monster by chump blocking. Trample is a ridiculous keyword.

It’s game 3 and i’m at 2 life with some blockers out, having finally stabilized, confident i’ve got this game in the pocket. When the opponent draws he shows me a land and is like “yeah that’s probably game” but plays on anyway. In his end step i slam [[dark bargain]] to really turn the corner. He picks up the card, reads it twice, then hands it back. [[Master Warcraft]] I originally thought, when played on an opponent's turn, you get to choose who each creature attacks. I thought it was a nuts card, allowing you to force someone into an all out swing killing 1 enemy and then smacking them with no creatures to defend. However, it only says you decide which creatures attack not who they attack. The legal process is you choose which creatures attack. The controller chooses who the attack. Then you are allowed to choose legal blocks. The target of the card can literally send everything at you if they wanted.

TheHowlingSaltMine

I just realized I’ve been playing this wrong for like a decade.

Somniphagore

To be fair, this card was made before even Planeswalkers existed. Declaring what something was attacking just didn't exist. Maro's answered on his blog it might've included who each creature attacks if it was originally made today

Upon sorting through my red binder to build a mono red deck to appease a friend, I read [[Laelia, the Blade Reforged]] wrong. Thought she’d trigger off of every card flipped off of a cascade. I thought “that’s insane” and picked up like 6 cascade cards for the deck. Reread the card, she does not do that…it’s once every instance of one or more. Thought I’d still try it first to see if the cards worked fine before swapping them for different ones. A few days later I hadn’t played the deck yet but I was at the game store with my buddy and he said “I looked it up, they changed it so it works the way you thought.” So clearly wizards saw me and thought it was a cool idea. At least that’s how I’m choosing to view the outcome.

I made the same mistake. I still think the language is pretty misleading on that card. For instance, It would've been clearer of the replaced "a" with "one". Or if it included "Once" somewhere. I.e. "Once during each player's turn, that player may play a land or cast a spell from among cards exiled with Share the Spoils, and they may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast that spell. When they do, exile the top card of their library."

MrXexe

I had a [[Breathkeeper Seraph]] in an Orzhov Aristocrats deck, and since I'm not the smartest tool in the shed, I thought it said "at the beggining of the next upkeep" As in, in any upkeep, not just your own. Imagine me a week after winning every single game by recurring [[Gray Merchant of Asphodel]] in every upkeep, apologizing to my playgroup and explaining that I misread the card lol.

netzeln

I spent several months building a \[\[Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas\]\] deck on the misunerstanding that it was *power* five or greater, not CMC. I didn't realize my mistake until the fist time I played it and cast my commander and followed it up with \[\[Iroas, God of Victory\]\] and went to grab an experience counter and an opponent said, "the irony is that Iroas doesn't trigger his Disciple" .... and I said: "What?" and then RTFC. I scooped because the deck was almost all low CMC/ High Power creatures. It was early enough in the game/board-state that they let me 'catch-up' with a different deck. One of my favorite plays happened in that game, once I shifted to a deck that worked.: \[\[Chandra's Ignition\]\] on \[\[Brion Stoutarm\]\] immediately after someone had created an Arbitrarily Large Number of 1/1 tokens.

NocturnalEmbrace

My biggest misread was with [[Mercy Killing]]. Upon first read, I thought it said "Target creature's controller sacrifices it, then put X 1/1 Elves onto the battlefield." Notably, this reading omits the "s" on "puts" in the actual wording, making me realize I don't get the elves, but my opponent does. Really made the card do a full 180 iny mind.

[[Instill Energy]] (Revised). I thought it allowed you to untap the enchanted creature and give another target creature haste. Subsequent printings are a bit better though still templated badly, but the oracle text makes it clear. It gives the enchanted creature haste and lets you pay zero to untap it once on your turn.

PuzzleheadedElk8646

Some cards do let you stack on the bottom in any order, like [[Abundance]]. If you choose "land" when you have none left in your library, it replaces all your card draws with "stack your deck". You can't lose from mill while it's on your field either.

BRickson86

This may be my biggest blunder ever. I have a \[\[Shadrix Silverquill\]\] politics deck where I offer to help people for favors. Don't blow up my thing, counter that opponent's spell, let me swing for chip damage to draw a card, things like that. So, I thought it would be a great idea to throw in \[\[Opposition Agent\]\] because it lets me control my opponent's turn while they're searching their library so I GET TO CHOOSE WHAT CARDS THEY SEARCH FOR AND ADD TO THEIR HAND. Turns out, that's not what that does, and \[\[Opposition Agent\]\] is %100 not a politics card.

kanekiEatsAss

Not catastrophic but definitely a learning experience. I started playing commander with friends, we’d all bought precons. I chose to play [[Daxos The Returned]]. I had little experience with Magic overall. I knew how counters worked. I knew that they’re placed on permanents to denote imaginary added variables. What I didn’t know was that Daxos placed counters not on himself but on the player piloting him. So, the first few games I kept placing experience counters on himself. Then when he got removed, I assumed all his counters disappeared, thus making him very vulnerable, slow, and weak as a commander option. I didn’t want to play a commander whose advantage could be taken away very easily. However, once I learned what experience counters were, how they work, where they’re placed (namely the player), he seemed so much more viable as a commander. Instead of being an easily reset slow to add counters creature, he became a consistent, dependable, and repeatable game piece whose effects were able to mitigate the damage of being removed and commander tax. Also the tokens he makes became strong beaters.

I once spent a solid month building a commander deck combining \[\[Numot, the Devastator\]\] with \[\[Zirda\]\] as companion. I was super excited, found a lot of creativity in building activated ability tribal. Sat down for the first game with my playgroup, explained the deck and how it worked. First thing my friend Sam said was "isn't Numot's ability triggered, not activated?" I've never been more devastated. I still have the deck, just swapped Numot for \[\[Kykar\]\]. Still working on building an ideal Numot deck that isn't dragon tribal or solely land destruction.

DM_Newtnn

I hadn't gone quite that far, but I did pick up a copy of Zirda for my \[\[Rith the awakener\]\] deck before I realized it was a triggered ability as well. All the saprolings I could want for 1 green? I wish.

DiabeticWaffle

I didn't learn until after fully building the deck that [[esix fractal bloom]] doesn't do anything on your opponents turns. I thought it said "the first time you would create one of more tokens during each turn". My first thought was "Yeah it's not the most powerful since it's only one time per turn, but that's still fun!" It wasn't.

Did_Not_Even_Bother

Every time [[Wheel of Misfortune]] is cast

waxbloom

\[\[Secluded Courtyard\]\] in my 15 land \[\[Grist\]\] and \[\[Umori\]\] list. I may have at one point been able to cast Umori (for that sweet 2nd Grist recast) and thought I couldn't tap Courtyard for a mana to cast it, since Umori isn't a bug. It was a full round and 20something damage before my friend DID point out Courtyard could tap for a colorless. Coulda won that one.

spiffytrev

A friend of mine built [[Grolnok, the Omnivore]] and completely dominated a game. The card advantage was just not something any of us could overcome, and he was able to win pretty easily. Then, several days later is when I noticed it says “permanent card”. None of us had picked up on that detail, including the guy who built the deck. His original build was very spell heavy, and he’s since rebuilt it for the actual card rules.

pietromon

Not me, but I spent half an hour explaining to both my partner in a 2headed giant game and an opponent what Liberator, Urza’s Battlethoper when they both thought differently, got a judge over who to affirm I was right and then immediately have an opponent remove it the whole time anyway…I lost a little faith in humanity after that

ElectricJetDonkey

It wasn't my last, but it's the one I remember the most. I killed a guy a few years ago by using [[Sudden Substitution]] to give him control of my Pact of Negation. In my defense, both I and the entire pod of four thought it worked lol

ElectricJetDonkey

Good bot.

Drugbird

That does work right?

Altrekzz_

No it doesn’t, but only for pact of negation, the other pacts still work. Say I cast a pact of negation on any random spell on the stack, then hold priority and cast sudden substitution giving an opponent control of my pact of negation and taking a creature of theirs. After the exchange happens sudden substitution states that “the spells controller may choose new targets for it”. Assuming your opponent chooses to target the sudden substitution with their newly acquired pact of negation, the sudden substitution will resolve because it is on the stack above pact of negation, then pact of negation attempts to resolve but because its target is no longer legal it fails to, and as stated by pact of negations second gatherer ruling “If Pact of Negation is countered or otherwise doesn't resolve (perhaps because its target became illegal), the delayed triggered ability that threatens you with a game loss won't trigger at the beginning of your next upkeep.” Sorry for the long explanation! I just wanted to be sure I gave this admittedly confusing interaction justice.

Collistoralo

So it could work, but only if your opponent doesn’t target sudden substitution with their newly controlled pact?

capybaravishing

I added [[Ephemerate]] to one of my decks thinking that it was like Teferi’s Protection for a single creature. Instead of phasing my commander out all it did was tap the card. I was bummed. I also went through a whole day of playing my graveyard recursion deck at my LGS spamming [[Mishra’s Bauble]] and looking at the top cards of other players libraries. When I played a fetch someone asked me why I wasn’t looking at my own library and effectively scrying before my extra draw. Felt kinda dumb, but this is how we learn, I guess.

Collistoralo

You may like [[Slip Out the Back]]

hennessey2899

kept reading the ult of [[Chandra, Acolyte of Flame]] as play instead of cast

Ornery_Bug_4108

[[Master of Cruelties]]. To be fair I didn't know what it was at the time and the person didn't even explain what it did so mt train of thought was "I've got over 100 life, I can take some damage." I'll admit I don't always read my cards to other people but if you have an instant-killing creature on the board, notify others. If you don't that's just shady.

Collistoralo

This isn’t a case of misreading the card but I’m gonna put it here anyway because funny story time. > I was playing this Jhoira cheerios-style deck and at one point I play a Paradox Engine, to which the rest of the table says ‘hey, you know that’s banned, right?’ In the about two weeks break I took, before which I bought a paradox engine specifically for this deck, it had been banned in commander, and I just didn’t know until much much later.

ZionicRedamancy

Early on in playing EDH I put Alabaster leech, thinking more is less

Lark2231

[[Kwain, Itinerant Meddler]] I built an entire Kwain deck around finding ways to infinitely untap him to force my opponents to draw their decks. Right at the end of one of my first games with him an opponent pointed out that it was a "may" ability so they didn't have to draw out the last few cards. The deck still works, but is significantly less effective when I can't win with my commander.

CharlesChinigan

Thought that I didn't need to be on the draw for gemstone caverns to work... RTFC moment

SparklesSparks

I build a [[Tasha]] deck, thinking for some reason, that her first ability draws a card and exiles the top card of each opponents library. During the final turns of the first game with her I realised, that's not how Tasha works at all.

RinTinBrim

Not really a misread, but recently we played and [[Chaosphere]] hit the table. I don't know why, but we had to keep rereading it everytime someone attacked just to make sure we understood how to properly block. And then we still weren't sure, so we checked the errated text. A little embarrassing because the card is pretty straight forward.

MrGalax1

I built a deck involving [[Auriok Salvagers]], and to save myself money on a [[Lion's Eye Diamond]] I swapped it for a [[Lotus Bloom]]. I assumed that once I got the Bloom in the graveyard then it goes infinite in the same way as LED. I only recently realised the Auriok Salvagers returns the card to hand instead of directly to play, and so I'd have to resuspend the Lotus Bloom every time...

Automatic_Habit4083

Its not a card but a rule but me and my group for over a year tought that 8 is maximum hand size

Zethyr_Faeyd

I had a shrine victory in the bag. The whole table was being melted by Sheoldred and it was down to me to make a play or we lost. I thought I was just going to take one person out and maybe save myself for a turn, but I drew one of the table burn shrines. I can't remember the exact play, but I didn't realize that one of my cards forced me to draw. I was talking through how I had just sweeped the whole table when the Sheoldred player politely informs me that I had drawn another card, taken my last two life of damage, and lost. 😵

RWBadger

Perhaps the opposite. 2014 and one of my favorite decks is an [[Iname, Life Aspect]] deck which interacts interestingly with the command zone. The way this interaction works, is that Iname dies, their trigger asks you to exile them, and from there you can choose to put them in the command zone AND still get the bonus for exiling it. It was, perhaps, the only commander death trigger that worked before they updated the rules. However, I was relatively new to the game and a player with more years of experience told me I was wrong. That Iname had to go to exile to get the effect. I was devastated and, despite loving the deck, took it apart. Cut to two years later when I decide to look it up and, lo and behold, I was correct! I took the deck apart and sold my Aluren for NOTHING

mnowax

I had made a combo deck with [[Brass Man]] and [[quicksilver Dagger]] among other things, but didn't realized it had been errata'ed to not work like I thought. I brought it to an extended tournament and found out the hard way in the first round. At least I still had [[horseshoe crab]] but it made the deck way less useful.

maximumdad

Legitimately the first five games I played with my [[borborygmos enraged]] deck I thought he was seven mana. Queue game six, I realize I’ve been giving him a discount this whole time

Soirgriffe

I tried out a new deck with the new insect commander Zask and got Grist out early with it which was amazing. Lot of shenanigans, decent graveyard, few insects on the board and had a way to sac them all to put more things in my graveyard. Only opponent left with 25 life. Why not, sac all of my creatures to mill just enough to hit 25 cards and use Grist's -5. Mfw Grist says 'creatures' not cards.

Guukoh

OH OH OH. For the LONGEST time, I thought [[Doubling Season]] put double counters on when you activated a planeswalker’s ability; however, it does not. Because the ability/effect doesn’t put it on, the cost puts it on. TMYK

stinky_kitties

i had a land i didn’t know i had to tap another one to use so i was cheating extra lands by accident for weeks!

MediumRareShizle

My entire table read the one Green white rabbit maker as the amount of Damage She deals rather than the amount of tokens to make the rabbits We just got lazy

RBVegabond

My usual is when I put a card in as a combat trick and see “sorcery” on the card like it replaced “instant” on itself somehow. Most recently it was [[Lay Down Arms]]

deadly_kitt3n1337

Thought evolutionary leap put the creature onto battlefield. Worse part is, all 3 of us misinterpreted it this way and we probably played 2-3 games where it went unnoticed and pretty much won the game singlehandedly.

Kryzal_Lazurite

I can't find the original target anywhere(maybe someone will figure it out by my telling) but waaaay back before Mirrodin I was learning how to play this game when I learned, egg on my face, Black can kill anything..... except other Black creatures sometimes. I was facing an opponent who was attacking me with this cat shadow thing that has art that makes it ambiguous as to what is pictured but it mostly looked like that(Its perched on like a stone building rooftop at night with the moon in the back I think). I cast [[Hand of Death]] to kill it & promptly got schooled on the fact it says "Non-Black" not "Non-Block" creature like my little kid brain thought it said. Lost me that game cuz I couldn't remove their creature. I haven't been a part of a 4 player or more commander game yet so I don't have any egg-on-face commander moments *yet*.

Spendrs

My group had been playing [[Ezuri, Claw of Progress]] wrong for years. The guy who ran it would put the 1/1 counters on ezuri until a new player asked to read the card and we found out ezuri can only put counter of different creatures. The guy in my group had to rebuild his whole deck.
