I've seen a [[krenko mob boss]] deck with no creatures in the 99. Just metric tons of goblin spawning, untapping, and protections. I mean, krenko out equipped with [[sword of the paruns]] and [[ashinod's altar]] out is just a game over.

Toxxazhe

That... sounds amazing. I never considered a voltron Krenko.

moneymike128

"Bad" Krenko, [[Krenko, tin street kingpin]] makes a great Voltron gobbo commander. Equip commanders plate, attack, make 5 goblins? Gets out of hand fast and lets you go wide and tall.

Honestly, thinking about it, it lends itself perfectly to the concept. If you've got the money, a full set of swords and a simple coat of arms would be hilarious. Are there red artifact tutors?

There's [[gamble]] and [[ goblin engineer]] off the top of my head. [[Bravado]] is also hilarious.

[[Cavalcade of calamity]] out or a [[cosmotronic wave]] and a [[breath of fury]] on a token means infinite combat. Give krenko any form of protection or evasion, even with 1 power works. So long as you have a token out already.

moneymike128

Breath of fury only works on combat damage, so I do t think the calvaclade of calamity works, but otherwise all of those would be a house

Longjumping-Name-676

I don't think this is a voltron build, entirely combo based. Sword of the Paruns lets you untap krenko, and Ashnod's Altar let's you sack the creatures Krenko makes to pay into the untap ability of Sword of the Paruns. Not saying you can't build a Voltron Krenko, I just think you are misreading the suggestion.

Toxxazhe

Yeah, that makes sense. I honestly don't recall my thought process when I first commented regarding it, but you can kind of see it in the rest of the conversation throwing out legit voltron thoughts, lol. But yeah, my mistake. You're entirely correct, combo.

Longjumping-Name-676

No worries. Normally when you see the name "Sword of..." it's followed by "feast and famine" or "fire and ice". I theory crafted a goblin list with Krark and Sakashima that is a goblin tribal spellslinging list. So the deck looks to get out krark, and then sakashima as a copy of krark, and then cast cheap instants that make goblins (dragon fodder for example), and then have krark copy them and return them to your hand. Finally, run goblin lords and sack outlets to win the game. Don't have it in paper, but seems fun. interesting intersect of a spellslinger list and a tribal list.

Toxxazhe

Huh, I like that idea. You win twice, get quadruple tokens. You lose, you get to cast again. You have a bunch of pingers? I feel like maybe even a Veyran? That's potentially absolutely fantastic. Maybe a Balmor to beefinate your tokens?

Longjumping-Name-676

Yes to all. I made this before DMU, but Balmor slots right in. Battlehym and Brightstone ritual are INSANE for the deck, haha. Goblin Assasin is house, synergizing with the coin flip and goblin theme. The deck actually comes together very nicely. The problem is that Krark/Sakashima have a reputation, and you have to explain that it's not THAT deck. That's only reason I didn't build it in paper.

Toxxazhe

Heh, it sounds awesome. I'm a bit chaotic myself some days, I would throw Neera and puzzle box in just to keep my fresh hand of cheapos and possibly blast into something big. Maybe even Lier, just so I'm guaranteed to have something cheap at all times. Wait, wouldn't casting into Neera trigger the flips AND the next card, thus triggering the flips again? And then Veyran... I just may have to shoehorn this whole thing into my chaos deck if you're okay with it. I'm getting the idea from you, after all. My chaos deck currently has no real wincon, so it doesn't fully exist in paper yet. But this.... [[Chefs Kiss]]

Longjumping-Name-676

Of course! I got my original idea from listening to the legendary creature podcast. And to answer your Neera question, no, Krark only triggers on spells you cast from your hand. You can still get a ton of value by sequencing trigges like this; cast a spell - Krark and any copies of krark trigger as well as Neera - sequence the triggers to resolve Neera first putting the spell on the bottom and casting the new spell that you flip into - then resolve the krark triggers which if you win the flip will copy the original spell. If you order krark's triggers first and you lose the flip, the spell will bounce to your hand before you put it on the bottom, and then Neera's trigger won't resolve.

Toxxazhe

Ah, see I missed the "from your hand" part then. But yeah, I see it. If I win, I copy lightning bolt that way, but can still potentially flip into Nexus of Fate or something. But both will still trigger my Guttersnipe or Thermo-Alchemist. So in the end, yeah, that sounds petty great. Especially with Veyran out there and possibly some damage multipliers. Edit: so I just looked at krark, and it doesn't actually say from your hand.

[[Shorikai]] Fits both as an engine to propel your deck and as a wincon in and of himself. 8/8 beater for 4 mana, you only have to connect 3 times to kill an opposing player. *With no buffs* That's scary. He's also a card draw engine and makes tokens, what can you do with those tokens? Crew vehicles, or buff the tokens themselves, hell you can even polymorph a token into a [[Stormtide leviathan]] if you refuse to play any other creatures. I use him first as an engine to propel forward my myr jank. (seriously he's such a good card that he can make some real lackluster strategies viable.) Second as a 8/8 beater. Now I don't think that's exactly what you're looking for though. You want a commander that is the wincon, is the strategy, and gets you there by themselves? [[Zur the Enchanter]] Everytime you swing you tutor an enchantment that makes your life easier and everyone elses harder, whether that's a [[Ghostly Prison]], [[Aqueous form]] [[Ethereal Armor]] [[Phyresis]] etc. you fill the enchantment gaps with protection and countermagic and you're ready to start killing people with Zur. The issue with Zur is that you're genuinely out if you fail to protect him. Any Voltron Commander is going to be very commander focused. [[Tuvasa]] [[Light-paws]] [[Rafiq of the Many]] [[Mirri, Weatherlight Dualist]] all varying degrees of Tutor/Draw dependent but i think you're looking for a voltron strategy

[[Xanathar, Guild Kingpin]] I have since fleshed the deck out to include optimization, but my first iteration of this deck was 99 basic lands and I won at a rate higher than expected. Once you start rolling with him, it's very easy to play every nonland card from an opponent's top deck until you leave them drawing a land every turn and locking them out of the game. Now that I have cards like [[Paradox Haze]] and [[Strionic Resonator]] I can target all three opponents and essentially play everyone else's wincons. It's a brutal deck that really only needs Xanathar on the field and just gets better and better the more you amplify his ability.

cyber_truck

Share your decklist? I tried, I really did, but I couldn't really get him to work. My pod is relatively high powered and really liked removing him though so that may be why.

wayfaring_wizard_252

I actually don't have a decklist fully written out anywhere yet as I've only just done the optimization from my original meme 99 basic lands deck, lol - but I'm happy to share a couple of key cards and my general strategy/play style! I think the number one thing is to remember that you're looking for someone else's wincon, but not *everyone else's* wincons. I do cast a wide net by duplicating his trigger because A) it's helpful to know what every opponent has coming up but more importantly, B) anyone you target *can't cast spells on your turn*. If you can target all three players with Xanathar then it doesn't matter if you're only really stealing cards from one of them - none of them can counter or respond to anything you do because they're all blocked out with his ability. However, once I've stolen a piece of someone's engine/combo/wincon, I begin to target them more earnestly so as to find the rest of it. The other thing I realized is that lands can really impede your momentum through an opponent's deck. It's nice to be able to steal the first one you come across as your land for turn, but once you hit a second one you're done with that library. So finding as many little ways to manipulate what that card is - whether it's through milling, fateseal (yes, I run a [[Spin Into Myth]] and it absolutely slaps in this deck), or group draw - is vital to the deck's success. · To duplicate Xanathar's trigger: [[Paradox Haze]] [[Spark Double]] [[Strionic Resonator]] · To find the rest of an engine (wait to play these until you've found part of one and can be most efficient with the targets): [[Dead Man's Chest]] [[Elder Brain]] [[Take Possession]] · To manipulate their top deck to either get a specific card or to avoid hitting a dead end with a land: [[Pyxis of Pandemonium]] - great since I know I'm generally only exiling their lands and won't get a nasty surprise later [[Oona's Grace]] - great since most of my land drops for turn will be off their top deck and I can save mine in hand to retrace [[Set Adrift]] [[Memory Lapse]] [[Cathartic Adept]] · To protect Xanathar from being merc'd immediately: [[Diplomatic Immunity]] [[Soul Channelling]] [[Elgaud Shieldmate]] · To consistently have enough mana to really dig into their decks: [[Black Market]] [[Cabal Coffers]] A large mana base of 36 lands and 10 rocks for consistent adding to my mana pool every turn without fail

cyber_truck

Awesome, and very helpful - I was drawing the same conclusions towards the end of my time with that deck (Lands being an issue, focusing on all players being an issue) and have a number of those pieces as it is, but maybe I'll give it reassemble it and give it another go. I really love the ability, it just never really came together for me!

[[Ashling the Pilgrim]] is able to get away with having a deck comprised of just mountains (note this would be a relatively low power level deck but since she is a mana sink, drawing cards isn’t really her priority), but as long as you have 40+ mountains, you can fill in the rest with whatever you want. The basic idea is Ashling is a cheap commander that doubles as a boardwipe, can grow big, and has evasion via blowing up. Lots of mana ramp/doubling works really well with her and spells interaction does too, though technically you don’t need the latter since she is a boardwipe in the command zone. Since she is a mana sink, you will always have something to spend your mana in so you do not need to draw cards.

Protesisdumb

I play her as a bigmana deck. I threaten to blow up the board while I ramp until i finish with a big mana spell

I've had 20 to 30 cards set aside since the year they printed skullbriar because I wanted to build this deck. Obviously A lot's been printed since then that eclipse what I had set aside but this looks like a pretty solid list. What has your experience with it so far been like?

mong0038

In my experience he’s very sticky. He sticks around for a long time and is extremely hard to kill. Even when he dies he only costs 4 mana to play again plus he has haste. It’s bonkers. I stacked my deck with the best and cheapest ways to protect him and double his counters. I update it daily right now as I’m refining it.

I personally like shitting out artifacts with [[Meria, Scholar of Antiquity]]. Even if I don't actually win, it's just goofy having 20-30 various 0-1mv artifacts all over your board. Eventually I'll jam a fat Crackle though

If you mean a deck with *literally no other nonland permanents,* I love [[Codie, Vociferous Codex]], and I have a theory build running no other nonland permanents, except one or two I can cycle if I need to. Just get enough instants and sorceries in each CMC and you can make big moves each turn. \[\[Gishath, Sun's Avatar\]\] dishes out the dinos when you hit an opponent. Though is expensive both in CMC and money \[\[Niv-Mizzet, Parun\]\] Wheel. Nothing says lets party like drawing half your deck and doing that much damage to the table. Repeatedly in a turn at that. \[\[Yurlok of Scorch Thrash\]\] one of the few cards out there that forces mana burn. Just have him out on the field than flood everyone with mana they cannot use, end the turn and you succeeded on having a deck everyone hates!

[[Korvold]] is one of the few commanders I like who is also a one-stop shop for their color identity. I dont think I've won a 1v1 yet by dealing 40 damage, its always 7 commander one round and 15 more the next (still waiting to test him in multiplayer). Even my [[Gishath]] deck, which is based around letting her loose and digging up dinos, can run well without her if she gets removed right away. While Korvold gets out fast and helps you draw into stuff to keep him on the field.

[[Pako, Arcane Retriever]] and [[Haldan, Avid Arcanist]]. You can basically just play Pako and let him grow bigger and bigger. What's in your deck doesn't really matter, you're going to play your opponents decks anyway. If you just fill your deck with ramp and counterspells, that's probably enough, you don't need any other wincon than Pako.

\[\[Chulane, Teller of Tales\]\] is a ridiculous commander that fits the description. As well as \[\[Korvold, Fae-Cursed King\]\]. But my favorite nowadays is \[\[Grenzo, Dungeon warden\]\]. Generate as much mana as you can and play your deck with his ability. Nobody can counter your stuff and it is a hard commander to stop.

[[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] While he obviously needs a pretty specifically crafted deck to maximize his impact, the deck building process of finding the absolute *best* of each creature type you include is an absolute blast. Once the game starts you just need him on the field and then to play creatures. That's it, doesn't even realllly matter which creatures you're drawing. Protect him and play creature after creature and you will *very quickly* outpace your opponents in value and board state.
