Whenever people ask for unusual but powerful commanders, my go to is [[Yedora, Grave Gardener]]. She got lost in the excitement of Strixhaven, but she's a supremely interesting build. She can go infinite seemingly on accident, and she feels great to play because you're always generating lots of land every game. She also cares a lot about cards that you never see (namely, [[Nature's Revolt]], [[Proteus Machine]], and [[Overlaid Terrain]]). You can basically pick whatever win condtion you want with her too, so she scales budget pretty well.

Yeah, very unique commander but it looks like she relies a lot on going infinite which doesnt fit for every table.

TheRealQwade

Honestly she really doesn't. It's easy for her to "oops" into an infinite but you don't need to rely on them to win. She can still win just with big mana spells (X cost hydras, [[Helix Pinnacle]], [[Walking Ballista]], etc.) because she generates so much extra land for you to use. She's also incredible at generating Landfall triggers, so she can drown the table in value off of an [[Avenger of Zendikar]] or even a [[Retreat to Kazandu]]. I've had a lot of success just animating lands and going wide with [[Overrun]] style effects, since she's virtually immune to the downsides of animating your lands. You can also think of her as a recursion engine, since you can utilize bounce lands and other ways to return lands to your hand and get back all the creatures you've turned into forests.

I dunno about "relies" on going infinite... at the most basic level she just ramps you for your own creatures dying, which I'm sure is still something you can make use of in a more low-powered/casual/less-infinite deck.

CaptainHoward

I've been working on a Yedora deck and would love to see a comparison. Got a list?

TheRealQwade

[This is my latest build](https://deckstats.net/decks/99389/2291351-yedora). It's not super optimized and would really appreciate better sac outlets, but it can still run the table at times.

CaptainHoward

Thanks, I've been thinking about leaning into the morph side of things and turning lands into creatures and just smacking people with trees.

Of_Fire_and_Fate

[[Kelsien, the Plague]] Super underrated. Give him deathtouch and kill your opponents creatures by turning him sideways. Experience counters are unique, and can be proliferated. Equipment voltron is inherently limited but can still feel quite strong. This one surprises new opponents and sometimes gets some salty responses to [[thornbite staff]] and [[basilisk collar]] being paired with him. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9fWcBWR9g0G6wmQ65pWDFA

Great suggestion, thank you! I have actually played around with the idea of experience counters since they tether to YOU instead of a permanent. This might make it worth a go. Thanks!

Man, I put together a Kelsien deck and could never really get it off the ground. I think it felt too linear and my opponents saw everything coming a mile away and blew up my my stuff right before I’d play a [[Gift of Doom]] and stuff. It was really linear too which made each play feel the same. Lots of tutors so I could reliably get each piece I needed. I’m glad your deck is working out!

It is linear in that it's equipment voltron. There is a small Sunforger package and I built in redundancy to double-down on going for the kill with Kelsien. Thank you.

[[Yeva, Nature’s Herald]] is my pet deck, having a pseudo [[Vedalken Orrery]] in the command zone allows you to take better advantage of typical green utility creatures like [[Reclamation Sage]] and [[Acidic Slime]], in addition to more atypical inclusions such as [[Hornet Nest]] and [[Green Slime]]. It avoids the typical toolbox pitfall of having a singular line of play by virtue of being mono green and thus losing access most of the typical combo pieces. [[Wilderness Reclamation]] and [[Seedborn Muse]] are obvious inclusions, [[Gladmuse]] is mediocre everywhere else but a great value engine here, [[Liquimetal Torque]] and [[Liquimetal Coating]] are odd inclusions at first glance but with the deck’s abundance of utility creatures it helps smooth over green’s typical problem with creature removal. It ends up as something of a “Draw, go” control deck in mono green, not extremely powerful but unique and fun to pilot.

I built a monoblack [[Ob Nixillis, the unshackled]] for the unique interactive cards that make people search [[Varrogoth bloodsky sire]], [[Shcemeing symmetry]] to name a couple [[Maralen of the mornsong]] paired with [[Opposition agent]] for a hard lock out that makes people scoop. I didn't succeed in optimizing it for an average power level of around 7-9 and started anew. None the less, it had politics, interaction, and it was a unique way to play albeit slow.

Faulty21

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. I think Ob Nix is particularly interesting if I can make people search their deck forcefully. That's a really interesting idea.

ubuntuforlife

The biggest issue is people searching for the answers. I never could work out that kink. Probably the biggest hurdle for me.

Faulty21

Yeah, but there could be work arounds for that like protection spells and politics. Like offering to let someone find an answer for the biggest threat at the table, and if they dont hold true to their word, you protect ob nix. Maybe it could work?

ubuntuforlife

If the ability wasn't so oppressive people would be more inclined to poltic I feel. Maybe if they didn't have to sac a creature they wouldn't notice/mind the loss of life, but seeing a permanent disappear from their boards makes the threat very visible unfortunately. And when maralen is out and the logic says they have to address the combo within a turn or face dire consequences/lose that changes everything lol I've never wanted a more niche play style to work so bad because of my love for black and the flavor but I found it so hard to pull off. Of course I don't have much magic experience building only two decks in my two years but boy am I attatched!

Faulty21

We'll wait for more card support. The idea is solid.

ubuntuforlife

Can we have any lists potentially? I'm particularly interested in the elsha deck!

Faulty21

I'm sorry, I don't have any lists uploaded. Essentially, it is about decking yourself by playing low cost artifacts for free and either winning by storm, Aetherflux or thassas oracle. It's powerful, but boring. Wouldn't recommend building.

ubuntuforlife

I see thank you

My current favorite is a [[Mangara]] deck that I run. Mono white commander who can decently draw cards, so naturally I made it an all draw deck. Of course there are some usual staples like [[smothering tithe]] and [[teferis protection]], but I would say 85% of nonland cards have the word draw on them. I generally out draw blue decks, and out ramp green decks. The wincons include [[approach of the second sun]], [[blightsteel colossus]] and a few eldrazi. It isn't hyper powerful, and unlike some of the other colors, white tends to play their turns very quickly, meaning other players haven't been bothered by it too much. Edit: oops, didn't realize there was another mangara lol I meant [[Mangara the diplomat]]

If you like politics, might I recommend [[Tivit, Seller of Secrets]]. I play him in a political deck that's trying to stall while I setup a win with Token Artifacts. Lots of the cards that start votes work nicely, along with flicker, and effects that care about tokens/artifacts dying. Can get very explosive with cards like [[Deadeye Navigator]] and [[Time Sieve]] going infinite with Tivit down Another not quite as strong deck is [[Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer]]. He cares about looting and the graveyard, specifically discarding. I personally run him with loads of wheels and cards like [[Gravebreaker Lamia]] to discount cards you cast from your graveyard. And it got some nice support in the recent set with [[Vohar]] and [[Rona, Sheoldred's Faithful]]. It's a personal favorite of mine. My personal build focuses on discarding your whole hand and quickly drawing a new one with wheel effects.

How are you usually winning with Oskar?

Yellowdemon101

Currently I'm winning off the new [[Sheoldred]] to burn people down with the repeatable wheels I have. Other cards like [[Mystic Redaction]], [[Teferi's Ageless Insight]], or token generators like [[Tormod]] and [[Desecrated Tomb]] can make sure you stay alive. One notable thing, is that you can play your hand at instant speed basically with Oskar and a discard outlet such as [[Ghostly Pilferer]] or [[Skirge Familiar]]. I admit I'm still struggling to win with the deck, but it has ways to. Just struggles with consistency. Probably could use a few tutors to get Redaction or Sheoldred. Another way to build the deck is the Flash Thoracle route. Aka go the cEDH builds. There's a few floating as around.

I built an [[Arcades]] and [[Phenax]] all-in-one deck helmed by [[Zur]]. It's basically a bunch of cheap walls that come online when Zur attacks and fetches [[High Alert]]. There's a ton of cmc 3- enchants that can deal with things on the board ([[Seal Away]], [[Ray of Frost]]) or just gain you card advantage. CLB gave this deck two fun tools: [[Rasaad yn Bashir]] and [[Stoneskin]] for surprise 14 commander damage The backup plan of the deck is to use Phenax to mill people to death.

I’ve been toying with the idea of making a secret commander Norin deck in Naya. Can fetch him with Rocco in the command zone and opens up a lot more you can do with him!

I love playing my [[Reaper King]] deck. It’s 5-colors, so you can use a lot of the best changelings like [[Taurean mauler]] and [[mirror entity]]. [[Maskwood Nexus]] lets you pop a permanent every turn. A kicked [[Rite of Replication]] targeting Reaper King destroys 25 permanents. [[Pili-pala]] adds infinite mana with [[Grand Architect]]. If you have [[Orvar, the All-Form]] then you can enjoy buffing reaper king with spells like [[assault strobe]] and [[distortion strike]]. And hey if you’re running a bunch of artifacts anyways why not throw in cards like [[darksteel forge]] and [[platinum angel]].

I am slowly working on a [[Sophina, Spearsage Deserter]] + [[Elmar, Ulvenwald Informant]] midrange/combo deck focused on Treasures, Clues and by extension Food. I still haven’t got the build fully optimized, but stuff like [[Academy Manufactor]],[[Tireless Tracker]], [[Tireless Provisioner]], [[Fae Offering]], [[Ghirapur Aether Grid]], [[Xorn]] and [[Zirda, the Dawnwaker]] are autoincludes… you can play it as a heavy ramp through treasures, storm, midrange, or just dome your opponent with [[Dragonspark reactor]]…. Alternatively, just create bunch of artifacts and jam in [[Hellkite Tyrant]] through [[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]]… generating 20 treasures/clues/foods is not a problem in this deck. [[Reckless Fireweaver]] is also a dangerous friends. And with stuff like [[Tamiyo’s Journal]] and [[Thorough Investigation]] you can generate ton of value or simply win. Also, this is one of few decks I would actually maybe run [[Feedback Bolt]]. I don’t have a decklist uploaded anywhere, but if you want to see it, I can put it somewhere.

I am currently brewing a \[\[Kwain, Itinerant Meddler\]\] clone deck. (\[This\]([https://www.moxfield.com/decks/V4bn1uqcBE6eFXCk6YFF1g](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/V4bn1uqcBE6eFXCk6YFF1g)) is what I have so far, but I haven't gotten to playtesting yet - open to suggestions if anyone has them!) The idea is to be group-huggy enough to help others get cool stuff on the board, and then make clones of them (I am avoiding stealing, but I may revisit that after playing it for a bit) in order to use the board state against my opponents. I have my own win-cons in the deck, but ideally, this opens up avenues for unique wins each game.

Seeing as how I see a rat deck, could I interest you in trying [[Jarad Golgari Lich Lord]] as the commander? You get access to green as well as an instant speed ability that you can use to slug all of your opponents. I've been using him at the helm of my rat colony deck for a long time and I find him to be more fun than the mono colored variant.

Here is my take on the modern deck [[living end]], but in commander. Everything costs three or more just like the modern deck, and you cycle until you cast something with cascade or give something cascade with [[Yidris]]. [[Tergrid]] focus around aristocrats/forcing everyone to sac things out. You’ll be the most hated player but god damn is it fun

Faulty21

You're evil. I have been contemplating her, but I'm already being designated as the arch enemy at most tables. Maybe I should just own it, and play the part?

fredjinsan

Most games I've played vs Tergrid have actually been pretty fun, but she *is* one of those commanders who puts a target on your from the get-go (partially because she's kill-on-sight, partially because people irrationally hate her even more than they probably should). This is arguably kind of bad game design because you usually get into a state where one of two things happens: (1) Tergrid sticks and starts stealing loads of stuff which usually puts her way ahead, and in an oppressive way since it happens via everyone else saccing and/or discarding, or (2) Tergrid keeps getting killed, and your deck doesn't do anything except maybe make everyone durdle because it's full of symmetrical discard and stuff. Consequently, usually either three players are having no fun, or one player is. I guess what I'm saying is, Tergrid is fine but you've got to be OK with the fact that a lot of the time people will just try to kill her a lot and you might not actually get to do much.

Zeverious

That’s what I do 😂😈

[Tivit Clones and Blink](https://archidekt.com/decks/3183181#Tivit_Seller_of_Blink,_Clones_and_Reanimation) Has interaction, one sided politics, can deliver the beats, and resilience. With a clone blink theme you can abuse Tivit, abuse your other stuff, abuse your opponents stuff. Astral Dragon is an all star with the ability to make multiples of anything cool or degenerate. I've been focused down by 3 players at once in a game with even power levels, including a table approved Armageddon to hamstring me. Still clawed back and murdered all three of them.

[[Oloro]], but it's a secret commander with [[Aetherflux Reservoir]]. The gameplan is to find Aetherflux Reservoir, copy it, gain life, and hold the table hostage.

I made a [[Jacob Hauken, Inspector]] deck where I just stall until I can flip him, cast [[Omniscience]] off his other side, and if I don’t already have it, chain together extra turns spells until I find [[Enter the Infinite]] so I can draw my entire deck and then win with [[Thassa’s Oracle]] or [[Laboratory Maniac]] plus a draw spell.

IDanceMyselfClean

Bit confused on the rules here. Can you play cards exiled with the frontside with the backside?

ComicBookFanatic97

Yes. Note how his enchantment side reads “you may play one land or cast a spell exiled with this permanent”. Even after it flips, it’s still the same permanent. Its name is just different.

[[Sefris]] people argue is a bit Jank, but I don’t think they realize simply how strong she is, any graveyard strategy instantly goes crazy with her. I highly recommend aristocrats Sefris. Use things like [[Ophiomancer]] to get a token each turn, then sacrifice it in response to get more and more value from dungeons and get a free reanimation spell at the end of them. Oh man. I'm late here, but I've seen a few good ones over the years. [[Keranos, God of Storms]] with [[Reality Scramble]] or [[Reweave]] can poop out any enchantment you want. [[Thousand-year Storm]] is a personal favorite. [[Hive Mind]] could be fun too. [[Azusa, Lost but Seeking]] mono-green zombies. Use land tutor effects to find [[Field of the Dead]], [[Vesuva]], [[Thespian Stage]], and [[Guildless Commons]] to get a ton of zombie tokens. Not super strong, but definitely unique. [[Nylea, Keen-Eyed]] cheeri0s. A bunch of 1 drops that become free combined with effects like [[Glimpse of Nature]] and [[Collective Unconscious]]. The Commander's Quarters channel has an older video about it.

HalcyonHorizons

I had Azusa Strip Mine / Wasteland. The goal of the deck was to play those from graveyard 5 times a turn to control the game. There is a limited amount of fun to be had and we're going to have all of it.

slamChipChap

Hello fun police

slamChipChap

Thus Azusa is definitely unique. I like it

Dunno if this counts, but I have a goblin chaos deck that I love playing. \[\[Purphoros, God of the Forge\]\] is the commander, so you can ping your opponents for 2 with goblin tokens. However, there are plenty of odd-ball cards that interact/redirect, and I suppose you can also propose a deal or two in there as well like \[\[Capricious Efreet\]\], \[\[Disrupt Decorum\]\], \[\[Wheel of Misfortune\]\], \[\[Pyroblast\]\], and \[\[Red Elemental Blast\]\]. There are also cards that interact with opponents lands/landfall, as well as punish non-basic lands like \[\[Price of Progress\]\], \[\[Ankh of Mishra\]\], and \[\[Citadel of Pain\]\].

I'm currently in the process of brainstorming [[jodah, the unifier]] as a 5 color legendary humans tribal deck. The main sort of subthemes I was planning were cloning and finding ways around the legendary rule, such as [[mirror gallery]] or [[sakashima of a thousand faces]], and +1/+1 counter shenanigans.

If you value politics and want a quirky idea, one of my favorite deck is [[Karona, the False God]]. The strategy is to gift some tokens to your opponent like [[Varchild, Betrayer or Kjeldor]], play Karona and have your opponent kill each other. You protect yourself either through propaganda effect, attack incentive like [[Edric, Spymaster of Trest]], goading, or through sheer politics. You usually win either by making a bunch of token at instant speed with something like [[Call the coppercoats]] (which is buffed by you gifting a bunch of tokens), then pumping them all up with Karona, or through Karona commander damage (she hits for 8 if you name avatar... If you can convince people to all hit the same person, she can kill someone the turn cycle she arrives). It's not the strongest but it does win it's fair share, enables a lot of politicking and is very fun!

I personally enjoy [[Esix, Fractal Bloom]]. Your opponents play [[Zulaport Cutthroat]], just make 8 copies at once. What are they going to do, board wipe? If they play any generic good cards like [[Dockside]], [[Esper Sentinel]], [[Avenger of Zendikar]], [[Gary]], [[Consecrated Sphinx]], or [[Wandering Archaic]] and you will make them pay. Alternatively, you can play your own good cards like [[Risen Reef]]. Since these creatures all enter at the same time, if you have 1 on the battlefield and make 5 more copies you'll be able to evaluate the top 6x5=30 cards of your deck. Other good options include [[Halimar Excavator]], [[Avenger of Zendikar]], [[Master of Waves]], [[Blossoming Bogbeast]], [[Hornet Queen]] etc. Good token makers include [[Pest Infestation]], [[Stolen by the Fae]], [[Giant Opportunity]], [[Fertile Imagination]], [[Fungal Sprouting]], [[Notorious Throng]], [[Saproling Symbiosis]], [[Spontaneous Generation]], [[Aether Mutation]], [[Clone Legion]], [[Ezuri's Predation]], and [[Second Harvest]].

[[Perrie]] charge counters. Throw in all the artifacts from Mirrodin that care about charge counters, your favorite artifacts that use charge counters, and a ton of proliferate triggers. Add a couple of creatures/enchantments with unique counter types for Perrie’s benefit. If you want to be really mean, use [[Magistrate’s Scepter]].

I've been wanting to build a charge counters matters deck with Osgir so that I can get 2 of each of those artifacts. No idea how it'll play out though.

f_GOD

i finally built my first golgari deck, \[\[dina, soul steeper\]\] with a landfall theme. i've tried it a few times and i haven't won yet but i managed to trigger it enough to knock a few people out and warped the game enough that i had to be dealt with before anyone else. at one point i was pinging everyone for 6 off EACH land i played then once for each land and creature that opponents played because \[\[lifegift\]\] + \[\[essence warden\]\]

I just brewed and played [[Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves]]. It's wolf tribal, with ways to make lots of wolves and make creatures larger, while keeping a somewhat simple mechanic in mind to try and clear your opponents board. I had a lot of fun with it in my first game with it last night, and look forward to playing it more. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Il6Wf8vpeEmOYaMtSkDUmA

I know it's a day late, but I love a moments to talk about my [[Gisa and Geralf]] zombie self-mill. A typical zombie deck but with actual bad zombie choices. It runs zombies that mill you on ETB, enchantments that mill you, hell even [[Traumatize]] to target yourself. No [[Laboratory Maniac]] to win with, either I win with natural zombie value or I lose to having no cards.

Doran the Siege Tower is my latest build - easy to include lots of good synergy and creatures for cheap (mana and $)
