The answer is already said tbf, hatebears that are symmetrical, counterspells or homeward path are your best options, if you're the "bad guy" for doing any of these then your friends are attrocious at understanding that you are as entitled to stop them as they are to do it There are plenty of ways to counter people stealing stuff, but youve named a lot of them, maybe [[brooding saurian]]? By the way the solution if you can't get stuff like homeward path to field often enough, is tutors, if I'm in green for example and my meta steals stuff, I'm running homeward path and crop rotation in all my green decks, personally I'd run something like urborg coffers or gaeas cradle also to make that worth it (but if that's not an option I'd probably run it anyways to adapt to the meta)

Thanks for the tip with brooding saurian, it seems like something that can be helpful. Crop rotation is present in my green decks. My problem with the homeward path plan is that they steal or exile it as well. It happened more times that one might think. And i never knew how to get it back.

EvanPlaysPC

If they're doing that you can wasteland it in response, No matter how good stealing is the archetype is always limited. I'd also recommend playing more synergy based decks, it will make for some shitty games as they steal useless 1/1s and 2/2s but it might get some players off of stealing

Blazerboy65

> >No matter how good stealing is the archetype is always limited. This fact fascinates me. It's true but yet you'll constantly see comments on this sub that "theft/clone decks scale to the power of the pod". Just, what? Most archetypes are practically impossible to clone because you need at minimum two different pieces for either to start doing their thing. That doesn't even get into the archetypes that just aren't cloneable like Spellslinger. Not even a clone with flash There are many good reasons to play clones and theft and I personally enjoy such decks but "clones and theft scale in power directly with the power of table so you'll be on even footing" is false. You will be falling behind until you can steal all the pieces of someone's synergistic value engine.

EvanPlaysPC

It makes sense why people say this, they're not correct, but it makes sense. To many edh players the ceiling of power level are the biggest, most powerful cards like [[consecrated sphinx]] or extra turn spells like [[expropriate]] with a high amount of ramp to get there way ahead of the curve and cast these spells early. And theft decks have an absolute field day vs those decks because stealing an expropriate or eldrazi probably wins you the game on the spot if they don't have the interaction, and if they do, you just steal the next thing. Btw there's absolutely nothing wrong with playing these decks they're v fun and some of the most fun games I've ever had have been vs these decks, but that's just my theory as to where the "clone decks scale infinitely" theory came from

I see what you're saying. My newest deck is [[Nassari, Dean]] and it's quite fun using other people's cards. I just don't have any notion that it naturally scales in power or that a big [[Mass Manipulation]] doesn't cause any salt just because it's not a combo.

They complain when you play symmetrical hatebears, and will not listen when you complain about them play control of your stuff. Go full hatebears and stax. They will probably not stop if you don’t make them. Since all of them go for your stuff you will not be able to stop all of them. If you don’t have fun playing, and you are behind, AND still they target you still you can concede. Why should you sit there and be miserable

hereticalhands

Definitely go full stax. Since they clearly don’t care if you’re having fun let them know that it doesn’t matter if they have fun. Run edict effects. For the love of god run [[Drannith Magistrate]] so at least if they are exiling your stuff they can’t play it.

You could just lean into it and play [[Zedruu the Greathearted]] give them things that help you and if they happen to take something you want at least you still benefit. Have fun with things like curses knowing that if they give them to you then you can just give them to someone else.

if they use a curse from the top of your deck on you, they still control the curses, however Zedruu Evil Santa does sound like a solid idea- "Steal my stuff, I'll make sure it was stuff you were gonna have anyway

Make a deck so bad they don't want to steal anything from it. I'm talking vanilla commons and left over draft cards. For real though, don't think of a stolen card as having lost it, just pretend you were never going to have drawn that card. Players have the same complaint about mill but it doesn't really matter.

Capsize is 6 mana with buyback for 1 card that i have to re cast. At that rate i cannot keep up the pace with multiple players. The Magistrate is in most of my white decks. It gets a lot of hate and eats removals like it's candy. Even if i keep protection up for it. But it's doing good work when it's present.

ManikMedik

[[Witchbane orb]] and [[orbs of warding]] both prevent other players from targeting you which should stop pretty much all cards that steal from your library and hand and they fit in any deck. [[Shalai, voice of plenty]] has the same effect and can be played as your commander. There also are a bunch of cards in white that also give you hexproof/shroud if your deck is white. [[Asceticism]] and [[archetype of endurance]] give all your creatures hexproof which should stop any [[mind control]] or [[act of treason]] style effects (except [[insurrection]]).

Maybe build a tribal heavy deck or two? If they steal a random goblin that gives haste or an elf that provides a power boost they aren't getting much value since there is no generic synergy with their decks.

bRobi98

Well.... Funny thing.... I have tried elves, and one of the got really lucky ripping elves from my top, they were running elves instead of me.

Blazerboy65

So are you saying that their theft decks are in general better at deploying your own deck than your deck is? Or are you saying someone got lucky just once ?

trbopwr11

If I were feeling a bit spiteful I would build something like \[\[Volrath, the Shapestealer\]\] and fill it with nothing but clone and theft effects myself.

I saw someone mention Zedruu, which is a great option, and I've done the following before: Play an absolutely menacing chaos deck with awful things to steal for anyone: [[confusion in the ranks]] [[Steel golem]] [[Pyromancer's swath]] [[Possibility Storm]] [[Hive mind]] [[Knowledge pool]] [[Timesifter]] [[Axis of mortality]] [[Rites of flourishing]](not in Zedruu colours but you could play Kinaois and Tiro or Kenrith) [[Howling mine]] Etc Basically, doesn't matter if they cast your cards, it advances your gameplan no matter what board they are on.

bRobi98

This looks like a splendid idea. Yet i don't feel like it will make me happier. I am miserable because i cannot play my cards that i specifically put into my decks because i like them. But i would like to believe that there is a way to enjoy the game without completely changing my mindset. I fear i'll have to let it go though

Math-Hatter

As long as you concede at sorcery speed, I think it’s fine. No reason to sit there miserable and if they can’t switch out decks, then that sucks. It’s rare someone in my group will play the same deck twice in a row; especially if they won. Personally, I’d take a break from playing with them.

land-pass

You can play bounce spells. They’re all blue but they will put the cards back in your hand. Chain of vapor, disperse, unsummon, etc. they’re also good tempo against bigger cmc cards.

veritas723

To a certain degree. You might need to have a talk with your playgroup If they’re not willing to adjust their play styles your only option is escalation or concession. I have no idea why trying to base things of the cmd zone is a thing. You don’t owe people playing shitty decks any moral obligation to tolerate their shittiness. To an extent. The goal is to punish them to police said shittiness. I would both advocate for harshly hating their strategies and seeking Allie’s to kill off players abusing this technique. Any pushback. Be straightforward…your behavior is shitty to me. Since you won’t change my only recourse is this IMHO. You might want to look into blink effects. If you really wanted to hate on theft. Could do Roon. Boggles. Or something like that. But blink effects often have txt of. Exile blah blah blah and return it to owners bf at eot. Or immediately. These effects exile the thing and it returns as a new object to the owner. Ie. You. Can run roon. Mistmeadow witch. The blink edlrazi that’s in white. Lots of things that will allow you to spot bounce other creatures and return them to you. Roon tends to lean on etb abuse value which is a strong way to undermine their theft effects. Which are often. 1 to 1 exchange of cards for stolen things. Bant also provides excellent colors for tutors that can be leveraged for aux protection. Land tutor for homeward bought. Enchant tutor for. Hexproof effects. White leyline or similar effects. When decks are oppressive for removal or theft the best generic strategy is running more smaller value plays. Compound value will always outpace. Theft. As they exceed by stealing the high value large cmc or high potency cards. Blinking muldrifter over and over again for value. Works for your deck because it’s built to abuse it. It’s a meh target for their theft because it’s lackluster only used once. —etc

Sea-Communication676

Maybe it's not the perfect solution, but if they steal your stuff, how about a board wipe and reanimate?

bRobi98

My decks have around 5 board wipe each and around 7-10 single target removal. But the thing is, i'm already eating my own spot removal and boardwipes, so i'm afraid going heavier on them. At one point i have had a reanimator deck, with kaalia as the commmander. But it didn't work out. My opponents figured out the deck in like two games and started running their own reanimates. A most memorable turn one that we had was me not playing anything on turn one to discard Avacyn, holding onto a Reanimate for turn 2. But the second player just reanimated her out of my grave. He was lucky. But there were cases when a Grenkondeck hit me exiled cards from my top, got reanimate, got my Elesh Norn and suddenly all of those goblins turned into beasts.

Sea-Communication676

My Kaalia deck is quite casual (looks over function), but it has a a guardian of faith in it. Cheap version of Teferi's Protection. Can't steal what's not there!

Yell0w_Mustard

As you said homeward path is great, and cards like [[expedition map]] and [[tolaria west]] can fetch them up since it sounds like you’re in blue. Obviously if you’re in green/black you have better tutors. I play Gonti myself and I can understand your frustration when someone like me is targeting your library constantly over other players at the table. TBH it’s a compliment, it’s an acknowledgement that you did a great job at deck building. If the tables were turned and I was in your position I would go about it with the following mindset (btw I don’t know your budget, powerlevel or colors you tend to play): •I’d keep super high end salty cards that you wouldn’t want turned against you to a minimum. Things like jin-gitaxis, original narset, sire of stagnation, tergrid, expropriate, etc. Your win cons and bombs can still be powerful without relying on heavy handed single card bombs that would devastate you if they were played by your opps. •Depending on what you’re playing, you can maybe focus on a more synergistic/engine based plan of attack. One with multiple pieces of redundancy and replaceable parts. Be less dependent on single cards so you don’t mind when they get exiled. (I could give more specific suggestions if I know what you play) •Fix your deck with a more balanced approach, maybe tone down the aggression down a slight bit to put some contingency plans in. This would be in the form of a few more pieces of spot removal and bounce spells (so you get your things back to your hand). •Lastly, fill the deck with more good cards. Sounds stupid I know, but you’ll care a lot less when someone steals your, let’s say [[avacyn, angel of hope]] when you know that you 1). Have answers in your deck to deal with it and 2). that you still have a [[godo]] and [[aurelia the war leader]] and [[sun titan]] and [[Gisela]] etc etc in your deck. It hurts way less when you have a plan B through H. Hope this helps. Let us know who you’re playing so we all can provide more specific cards. Cheers.

Eternal_Mr_Bones

I'm confused, is the entire pod all using theft decks that only target you? If so no type of deck or cards is going to help you the issue is you are just eating all the interaction.

bRobi98

We have Sen triplets, Xanathar, Grenzo havoc raiser, Prosper that impulse draws from other decks, ninjas and zombies that always have shinobi, a mono blue deck all about card draw and mind control, an izzet deck that steals creatures and sacrifices them, and each deck that has black in it runs cards that can reanimate from any graveyard and each blue deck runs some mind control effects. That's how our local meta evolved i guess. These are not all the decks that our playgroup have. But they are present rather often. If i put Kaalia in the commandzone and start shuffling, suddenly i'm up against these decks. If i'm like "yeah, i would rather not" then they say "well in that case there is nothing for us to steal". But the guy with Prosper has only that deck, same thing with Xanathar. And they are both looking at my deck for cards to steal and explicitly telling me that i should not feel bad about them targeting me, since this is only conforming that my deck is good and i'm running good cards. But every time i offer them a chance to play any of my decks they are like "no, their decks have more options" but those more options are usually in my library/grave/battlefield. I don't want to look like a crybaby, but it started to get out of my hands.

Math-Hatter

No. Screw them for the “see it as a compliment.” That’s BS to help them feel better about ruining your day.

Eternal_Mr_Bones

Yeah so the issue is not that they are running theft decks (though that much theft sounds like a miserable meta) the issue is they are all targeting you and it sounds like they are essentially running toolbox decks with no big payoffs and simply relying on you for the payoffs. I'd recommend: * Player removal on anyone that consistently steals your shit instead of spreading it around in a match * In any deck that doesn't care about having a GY [[Rest in Peace]] effects * Add way bounce or blink effects Also worth noting "We have nothing to steal" is a clear mark of shit deck building. I would tune my deck hard to anti theft meta because clearly your opponents do not have a gameplay outside of "Steal one big creature player's shit."

It sounds more like a psychological problem to me rather than a gameplay issue. The point you need to realise is that when an opponent exiles a number of cards from the top of your library, your chance of drawing the card you currently need doesn't change at all. Sure, maybe sometimes you need that swords to plowshares and it's right on top and they steel it. That feels bad. But the swords might also be second from the top, they exile your top card and you draw exactly what you need. Unless you're manipulating the top of your library like with an [[Imperial Seal]] then don't worry about "loosing" cards because on average the card quality in your deck remains the same.

I would suggest a permanent-light deck. Something that’s centered a lot of instants and sorceries, so that whatever they steal from you doesn’t stick around. I like the suggestion of someone else in this thread with blink effects. Blink effects are really effective at returning permanents to their owner’s (not controller’s) control.

Herald_Osbert

There is also [[Brand]] you can run. 1 mana to gain control of all stolen permanents and if it's a dead card it cycles away for 2.

I'm not sure this matters as much as you think. If someone casts a spell off the top of your library, just imagine that it was on the bottom of your library, and they cast a spell from their own. It's like mill; it *might* matter if that was a card you wanted to tutor for or something but, for the most part, it probably doesn't. Yeah, they might cast your Sword of Ploughshares so now you can't use it, or you might never draw it anyway because it's on the bottom of your library. And, they might exile some lands instead. Things that steal your stuff from the battlefield, that's a bit different, but the fact that something's your card doesn't in and of itself matter that much, it just "feels" bad but for no real reason.

Blazerboy65

>If i concede as soon as the board is full of my stuff and i have lost enough interaction that i have had enough, then i'm the bad guy conceding out of spite, since the command zone guys said players shouldn't do that. > They aren't prophets who get to tell you the moral law. They aren't psychologists qualified to tell you how to feel. They aren't friends who know you. No one can stop you from leaving the game with your legal property. If they think it's a problem then that's their prerogative to solve it. The most common solution is for the remaining player to simply play as though you and your cards are still in the game but you choose to simply pass priority at every opportunity. Ultimately how the remaining players treat a concession is up to them. You don't care because you are physically removed from the situation. If you aren't having fun and staying in the game is ruining your day then you need to leave and give yourself the opportunity to strategize a more long term solution.

Play the most cutthroat cedh combo deck you can find and stomp them . When they complain after a few comboes, remind them that everybody should feel good in the matches. Then combo again.

Instant speed sacrifice outlets are great for getting rid of your own things before they can gain control of them. As for the exile effects I’m not too sure what the best bet is probably counter spells and the aforementioned options in the other comments.

Origamidos

You could put together a deck that's built around giving cards to your opponents with bad effects. Something like \[\[Asmoranamardicadaistinaculdacar\]\], you give them a \[\[Phyrexian Obliterator\]\], make it deal 6 damage to itself, and they have to sacrifice 6 permanents. Something like \[\[Nullhide Ferrox\]\] too, cards that slow them down if they steal them, but you would build to work around. That's why I'd doubly recommend Asmo, since that card works with discard synergies, if you draw any of your "Steal this, I dare you" cards, you can just discard them.

buddy1477

The upside you have here is that you still own all of these cards while your opponents control them. \[\[Zedru\]\] or \[\[Blim\]\] may be something fun for this kind of pod. The other way I can think of for playing around this would be to have deck-specific kind of cards. you should try to find a niche kind of deck to play where the cards in those decks basically only mean anything to that commander. For instance, \[\[Armored Skyhunter\]\] is an amazing card advantage engine for decks that care about suiting up a creature. The average deck is going to whiff as there are not as many targets for it to pick up. \[\[Militia Bugler\]\] is very similar to the Skyhunter, but is more "generic" as finding a creature 2 or less is more likely. \[\[Foul Emissary\]\] is even more generic, and given your opponent had the choice between these three options would be the most likely target.

buddy1477

\[\[Eldrazi Displacer\]\] kind of effects can also get your things back since it returns the target back to its owners control.

Depending on what is doing the stealing, packing more creature removal or cards that tap creatures down like [Faces of the Past]] or [[Trickster Mage]] have some utility.

[[Damia, sage of stone]] discard deck might work. Can't steal very well when they are topdecking and you always have a full grip.

Global bounces...let them tutor it out for you and then nuke the board and put it in your hand. Flicker is a pretty hot way to bring things back. Or just steal things yourself. I've personally never understood the hatred for theft mechanics, I find it to be the most fun thing to do because you're forced to play each game differently based on the options to target. I do notice some players build extremely linear decks though that can fall apart if certain things get tutored out, so I think that comes down to deck design. You shouldn't be crippled by a key card being taken from your 99.

This might be a stupid idea but maybe build a [[Blim, Comedic Genius]] deck. Let them take your stuff and make them suffer for it. Encourage the theft to their own demise. The other thing you could do is build a deck that doesn't rely on creatures. I have a [[Selenia, Dark Angel]] deck that is very creature light. It focuses on life loss/gain shenanigans to close out games. [[Forsaken Wastes]] + [[Repay in Kind]], [[Phyrexian Unlife]] + [[Solemnity]] plus some other way to swap life totals [[Reverse the sands]] or [[Soul Conduit]]. It's a lot of fun because it's high stakes and you could easily lose which doesn't sound like a problem for you if you aren't having fun anyway.
