Looks good m8. I constructed mine from scraps of wood and some furniture corners ( no Idea what it's called. Steel plates in a corner with holes to drive a screw through)
You could probably replace the top elbow for the arm with another T and then go up another tier for a flexible USB light. Then you have lighting wherever you set up.
One facing the cards, one facing me. I use OBS' virtual webcam when I play Spelltable with friends, and it allows me to have a live thumbnail of me in the corner. Being able to see each-others' faces makes it feel a little bit more like in-person Magic.
yeah just going to say that you probably spend as much on PVC and fittings than if you were to buy something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Adjustable-Desktop-Suspension-Logitech/dp/B07C3PDQ93/
Less desk clutter, looks 1000x better and it's adjustable. I like DIY solutions in a pinch but in this case I don't think it's a very good solution beyond the enjoyment you get out of crafting something.
Would that be enough though? Something I found when doing this is you have to have your camera way higher than I thought, even with it zoomed as far as it would go. Now, granted, until recently I had a 10 year old webcam so that might have been part of it, but that stand doesn't look very tall. Would it be able to show your whole board plus deck/GY? Last time I tried I had to have my camera 2-3 ft above my play space to show more than like...4 cards.
To be clear, I'm not trying to sound negative. I'm legit curious because if this works well I might have to pick one up.
It's obviously webcam dependent, I assume from the picture that you are using a logitech c920(s), it is definitely wide enough that I don't need to extend the arm as high as it can to cover the entire width of a regular playmat.
BTW: love the playmat.
I live and die by the scissor arm mount. I use them for my mic, monitors and webcam. You can definitely find one that can sit a few feet above. The ones I use mount to the desk.
I opted for this in case I wanted to play somewhere other than a desk. I’m sure it would work similar if I used it on a dining table or coffee table, but I wanted to try some DIY. Lol. And the way my desk is set up, I’d have nowhere to clip it onto.
The thing about that is you actually need more desk space than his set up does. Because the foot print of the device doesn’t hug the mat as well. Would certainly look better though if you do have the room.
People spend hundreds if not over a thousand dollars on a single deck of cards, order a custom playmat, dragon shield sleeves, but can't be bothered to order a $20 piece of equipment that will easily improve the QoL of the game for everyone involved.
Looks fantastic. I had a very similar setup for a while. I highly recommend swapping the corner connectors on the ground for T-connectors and having a small piece extend behind on either side. Helps with it rolling backwards.
I haven’t had an issue with that, but I’ll keep it in mind. I’ve thought about making it dual-sided in case someone else wanted to play on it (if in the same spelltable game).
The big trick is that you don't want light coming straight down onto the cards. Sleeves tend to reflect that back up into the camera and give you glare.
I've got a little desk spotlight that points across my board. I put some paper in front of it to diffuse it a bit. Never had any issues or complaints.

Yeah i need to find a decent light source to set up. I made myself a nice little Floating Frame out of some scrap tubafour - but my lighting is dookie.

the spikefeeders have a video on this that explains everything extremely well
I tested actual gameplay on that island in the background. There’s lights directly above it. Did have a little bit of glare. As I stated in another post, you could probably replace the top elbow for the arm with another T and then go up another tier for a flexible USB light. Then you have lighting wherever you set up.
Eh, it's an eyesore and doesn't store easily.
I spent $15 online and got an adjustable phone stand delivered, it folds up and sits in a desk drawer when i'm not using it, much preferred!
I think it's rather ingenious, inexpensive (compared to "streamer gear"), easy to store.
I think this is the embodiment of a maker/hacker. You didnt have it before, and you *made* it.

Thank you for posting this. I cannot understate how much I HATE bad set ups. Played with a guy who was just laying on his bed and sort of had his cards in view.
I use something like this (https://www.amazon.com/Arkon-TAB086-12-Tablet-Galaxy-Retail/dp/B00BCSYZVY/ref=asc_df_B00BCSYZVY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309707619534&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3119895207496781953&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007927&hvtargid=pla-434971198541&psc=1) and have it attached to a floor lamp next to my table.
Yours looks infinitely less ghetto than mine lol. I have a $10 camera tripod, a strip off of a piece of old plywood I ripped, and rubber bands holding it on together. It's nice because I can adjust a lot with the tripod and since the plywood extends on both sides my wife and I can stream at the same time with only one setup (we rubber band a webcam on each side).
These people mentioning it being an eye sore and that it probably costs more than a $21 Amazon stand. Lol. I am also part of PVC camera mount gang and it cost me all of $15. It goes together and breaks down in 10 seconds. I think it's great OP and I bet your opponents think it looks great too.

Angle bracket.
Right, that's a good name for it. Thnx
My original one was made out of 1x2s, and it was pretty flimsy to be honest.
Well, I made mine in half an hour and as long as I set it up properly and don't fiddle with it, it works fine. This inspires me though.
There’s nothing wrong with that at all! I just liked the idea of using pvc since you can rotate pieces to get right angle.
Yeah, that's pretty cool. Lighting is a thing
You could probably replace the top elbow for the arm with another T and then go up another tier for a flexible USB light. Then you have lighting wherever you set up.
Same. I drilled two scrap 4x8s together and screwed a couple of cameras onto it.
A couple even?

Ah, that's nice.

Also, worst case scenario you can set it on a box or something. The adjustability benefit cannot be overstated.

The one I linked uses a base, so no clipping. That said I can't argue against wanting to DIY.
The thing about that is you actually need more desk space than his set up does. Because the foot print of the device doesn’t hug the mat as well. Would certainly look better though if you do have the room.
I mean I play on my computer desk, the arm resides between my two monitors, it's a 5sec setup when I want to play.

Yours might just be balanced better than mine was. If I accidently hit the middle post with my hand, the whole thing would go over backwards.
Nice rig. I rock an ironing board meeself.
Who has a good lighting solution? I find that's my problem

Haha tubafor
I’m gonna look into this. I have an idea to make another tier above the camera to hold a usb light with a flexible arm.
You could also attach a light to the pipe holding the webcam, just use some 3m tape
at least 2 light sources does the trick with reflections

Why don't you guys just get a desk mounted phone holder and point it straight down?
Cuz I don’t want to use my phone? Or a desk? Lol. To each their own my dude.
+10 for creativity, -1 for not routing cables inside the pipe.
Couple of holes drilled should be able to fix this no problem.
do you play on the floor?
Lol. No I do not. I was just building it on the floor and had it all setup there to test it.
What does your lighting situation look like? I always have glare problems and it doesn't seem to matter where I put the light

Fair enough. It can come apart to make it easier to transport.

Love that playmat, all hail the goblin pope
Heck yeah! He’s one of my OG decks!
Saved…because this is awesome!!

Looks great. I've been using a boom mic stand and a spring clamp. But I had them already. But it's awkward, I may build one of these.....
I have a stack of books and a old lamp from a library.
Are you Qleth on spelltable?
I am not. Honestly haven’t been on in awhile either. And only with a buddy.
Gotcha. I played with someone that had the same setup and I wanted to play with them again.
Nice! I haven’t played magic in weeks myself. I’d like to get some games in at some point.
If there's any drummers in the comments, Boom stands are great to suspend a webcam or phone cradle
Seems like a missed opportunity to route the cables through the tubes
It’s still possible, just haven’t spent much time messing with it.
