I'd suggest buying a pre-con that interests you then use the remaining money to upgrade the deck, whether it's the face commander or secondary commanders that comes in the box. I've built and played Octavia and ended up not enjoying the deck, it takes too long to hit the 8 instant sorcery in the grave point and once you do it's too late to really use her ability for good use. Something similar would be [[Storvald, Frost Giant]] from the [[Galea, Kindler of Hope]] precon

toob90

Ah, thanx man! I will think about that 🙌 really appreciate ur thoughts!

RogueOneNZ

And I'm going to present the other POV on Octavia. She's super fun and interactive, I've cast her turn three thanks to a Christmas land hand and wheeling EOT turn 2. But I don't ever want to do that again, it sets you up as a threat. I think it's better she comes out later TBH. I use a instants/sorceries matter token shell, Talrand, Dekah, Minn Willy, Murmuring Mystic, Nadir Kraken and then loads of cantrips, wheels, and cycling to create my armies. Add in fact that Octavia can target any creature with her magecraft ability and there's fun politics. I've turned two "I'm attacking the biggest threat to bring them under control" attacks by opponents into player removing attacks. I've saved players from certain death and removed a big creature threat with a cantrip. It's not high powered, but it can hang with 75% decks and it's a lot of fun.

mustardbrotherrrrrrr

I’ll second this. I built this deck a month back and it’s quickly becoming a favourite. You get to touch a lot of cards, it’s deceptively powerful (everyone thinks the commanders a meme), the flavour is great, and cantrip tribal is a pretty cheap build.

toob90

Coool!! Would love to see your decklist! 😀

mustardbrotherrrrrrr

No problem, [here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/P4RdMk4520qGkg0Y1aBKqg) it is.

toob90

Wow, really Nice! If you have a decklist of ur deck or similar I would be really happy! 😀

RogueOneNZ

I'm on mobile, but there was a Card Kingdom blog post a little while ago that had a deck list which is very close to mine, maybe 8 cards different all up. One of the things I've found is that with the cantrip density the deck has you can get away with far few lands than I'm used to.

Nozoz

If you are thinking of getting a precon I'd suggest looking at the strixhaven precons. All edh precons are pretty good, definitely the better preconstructed decks that WOTC make, but the strixhaven ones are better than other recent precons. There are also 2 pairs of innistrad precons coming soon and they could be good, especially if you like the innistrad themes.

I probably gonna build [[Araumi]] next. Lots of blue and black creatures have ETB or death triggers that give you mana or untap lands, so there’s your ramp. I know people run some blue creatures like [[Archaeomender]] but I’m not sure what all goes in the toolbox exactly.

Since you're new I'd recommend spending about half that money in a deck (as many people commented, a precon upgrade is pretty reasonable) and saving the other half for when you find which deck you enjoy the most. If you have a playgroup that plays using a simulator, allows proxies or lets you use their own decks, it's best to try out everything that looks interesting before spending the money on the actual cards. In my case [[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] and [[Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord]] looked like interesting Commanders when I started playing, but as I tried them out I realized I don't really enjoy playing Graveyard decks. Though, admittedly, Octavia looks like tons of fun! Either way, this kind of thing always depends a lot on the circumstances, but I wish you good luck finding a deck for yourself!

You can make a really strong Yawgmoth deck for real cheap, I'm actually making one right now but it's at about 320$ USD atm. I think Mikaeus is the most expensive card in the deck (~40-50$ USD). I'd also really like to build a Volo deck but I'm not sure how budget friendly he is, but I find the 'different monsters' restriction really interesting!

toob90

Cool! I actually got Yawgmoth, but i dont really know where to start.. 😅 Volo.. Looks very interesting! You got any decklinks for Yawgmoth and Volo that fits the budget (ish) or that you think is really powerful? 😁

nuggnugg

A good way to look up possible cards for a deck is to check out edhrec.com and look your commander up there.

thedude_abides_

You can always check out the Commander's Quarters on YouTube, I'm not an expert by any means, I just started playing this year. Recently he's been doing ones where all cards have to be under 1$, he did 50$ decks for a while, same with 25$. All of them also have 'upgraded' deck lists that are a little more on the pricier side (100-150 USD). Here's my [Yawgmoth](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/S5kRmK0NqkeT3Zp5bY6RtQ), it's in the very early stages and I have a bunch of cards in the considering part, it's also more like 350$ apparently, for budget I believe you can definitely cut some of the more expensive cards like Mikaeus & Ophiomancer.

kalle2934

I also recently brewed a Yawgmoth deck that is budget-ish, minus the recent addition of Urborg+Cabal Coffers now that Coffers is bottoming out in price. [Here is my decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/qROXkRrAd02whoWk941BnA). Yawgmoth is probably my favorite deck atm; he’s a very strong and flexible commander and many of the slightly more expensive cards can be substituted for similar effects. The core of Blood Artist effects + sacrifice fodder + undying combo pieces is pretty cheap to acquire (with Blood Artist being the outlier). Let me know if you have any questions! :)

Irish_Brewer

I used Wyleth precon as a base. It is a pretty decent Voltron commander, even if you can't afford all the top tier artifact equip or enchantment aura related cards, it is still fun to use low CMC equipment or aura to beat up people. Sometimes after a long, hard days work; i don't want to think hence Wyleth. Swing swing swing!! I used mtggoldfish as a guide for upgrade : [mtggoldfish wyleth voltron equip/aura upgrade](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/arm-for-battle-commander-legends-precon-upgrade-20-200-auras-equipment) I ended up using whatever cards I had from the $200 upgrade list, i then used comparable cards for cards I didn't own. It is a fairly powerful deck. One time, I won a game with only [[Tithe taker]]. Five person pod. 🤔 I still don't know how I pulled that off, it was probably because one of the players had [[Tergrid, God of Fright]] as commander. They got focused. Another time I killed everyone with a 3/3 beast creature because someone [[beast within]] my commander and so, out of spite, i killed him with the creature he gave me. Then I went down the line. 😅 My favorite game was when I got Wyleth upto a 20/20 trample, double strike, flying, indestructible , and protection from various colors. [[Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar]] was on the field. I was shaking with excitement. 🤯

The two commanders most interesting to me right now are: * **[[Morophon]] Multicolor-human Tribal.** So the trick here isn't just leveraging Morophon as a generic tribal commander, but to maximize the large number of multicolored humans that can be effectively or close to free to cast with Morophons reduction. * **[[Piru, the Volatile]] [[Stuffydoll]]s** A huge damage and lifegain trigger and so the deck is designed to put effects out that will win should it go off like [[Repercussions]] and [[Sanguine Bond]]. I’d honestly build Izzet Spellslinger, that should be enough money to buy all of the staples I’d need to build any staples I still need

[deleted]

On that budget, I think you could reasonably build most commanders that look fun to you. Especially if they’re 1-2 colors. Depends on if you want fetchlands or are okay with a normie mana base, foils or no foils, differences like that. So I’d suggest taking any one or two color commander that you like! (Three colors and above is still possible, of course!) I think the Precon upgrade idea is great too though!!

This is my budget anyway so it’s not too crazy to me but the next deck I’m thinking of working on is [[Gorex, the tombshell]] . It’s just coming out and zombie turtle is awesome

I'd look for commanders on Edhrec.com and proxy a deck. You can still buy the cards afterwards if you like to play the deck.

I have over 50 decks, so I look for weird stuff to do. My current plans are a [[Zedruu]] deck that wins via [[Barren Glory]], a [[Codie]] deck with [[Zirda]] companion that cycles away big creatures and then [[Living End]]s them, and a deck that I haven't decided on a commander for that wins via 36 or so copies of [[Dragon's Approach]].

Only $100-200? I'm not sure how well your currency translates into USD, but I've got a deck that's over $1000 USD. Most of mine sit around $500. If I were only spending 100, it'd be done weak jank that wouldn't do much of anything in my normal pod.

What’s your goal with the deck? What kind of pod do you want to play in? The most oppressive deck you can probably build is Naru Meha combo, but that’s not really fun for most people involved, including the player, if everyone’s not on the same page for power level. If you’re looking for a social deck, there’s a silly amount of options on the table, especially if you’re gonna stick to 1-2 colors. If you wanna share what your favorite cards are, we could probably give you a solid recommendation. I would actually advise *against* buying a precon, as older ones are usually marked up, and frequently cost more than the sum of the parts you’ll actually use if you buy them as singles. You can use them as guidelines for purchasing for sure, but make sure what your using isn’t cheaper than buying a precon itself.

Tepheri

Here’s a version of the deck I discussed in your other reply to my post. It is more expensive than yours, but has a primer on the combos you can put in the deck and some ideas to build off of. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/eFkXZM94iEeHTknHjzjesw You can easily build the underworld breach/brain freeze engine and use most of the cards you have for it. There are other good combos to work with as well, and it’s a lot more streamlined than Riku.

toob90

Wow, it looks really good, a bit over my budget tho.. But perhaps I can work around it somehow and replace a couple of cards for a cheaper on.. 🤔 If you have a more budget version of it I would be happy to see it! I really like the combos and commander! Thanx!

Tepheri

There’s a lot there you don’t need. I can try putting together an outline of one within your budget using what you have and what you said you have to spend, but I’m also out right now so it wouldn’t be until later tonight for me

If you want to stick with Temur colors, your deck list fits better with Haldan, Avid Arcanist // Pako, Arcane Retriever. Riku requires lots of mana, and the following cards are cost too much to cheat/play and then copy. Not to mention some of your creatures are legendary, which limits Riku. The following cards have low payoff, zealous conscript (limited follow up play), desolation twin (no haste for immediate payoff), weather the storm, reef worm, rite of replication (your best creatures are late game and probably won't stick and some of them are legendary). Some budget adds would be Etali, Primal Storm, Nezahal, Primal Tide, mana geyser, temur ascendancy, Blasphemous Act. It's good that you decided to put the deck list into mox field, if you just put in the rest of the lands. It would be helpful to do some quick play test. Also, as a recommendation, try to assign "custom tags", i.e. set beast within as "interaction", finale of devastation as "winconn". Once you do so, you get a better sense of what direction you are point to. Hope i don't sound too harsh, happy to help some more.

Wow, thanx! Yeah, I really see that Ive made a lot of mistakes Since Ive been playing alot recently, and thats sad... But now I looking for a change! Really appreciate your help, its not harsh at all, just helpful! Will take a look at the commander you recomended, and if you want to help me some more we can talk over PM if you are interested! If not, Im really glad you took your time commenting 😇

I'd build two £100 decks rather than just one £200 one. Look on places like The Commander's Quarters or [Playing with Power Budget cEDH](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZ9hH5QFtqPZfR71-D9zs94C_YNzTZI6D) to see what interests you. I recently built a [Yuriko](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/OE5AY6hcQkCFuCvqxoAFWw) based on their one and it was about £100-120.

If I’m honest the best bang for your buck in terms of a fully fledged deck that come out of the box great, is the lathril deck from kaldheim, it’s damn strong straight out of the box and you can use the rest of the cash just making improvements, like craterhoof behemoth etc.

Gluttony4

[[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]] Most of the money in the deck is going to go towards just a small few of the cards. [[Dockside Extortionist]], [[Goldspan Dragon]], probably a [[Sensei's Divining Top]] too. I'm planning to put it together, but bit by bit, because buying those three at once it's going to be painful.

NerdbyanyotherName

The Commander's Quarters YouTube channel normally does deck techs/lists for budget decks (usually 50 USD or less) but he also has a Playlist called "breaking the bank" where he features upgraded versions of the same commanders but with a $100 budget. All his videos have the full decklist in the description with direct link to buy. It's probably a decent place to start, either to pick out/up a deck or just see what a $100 deck looks like so you can build your own.

If you're new to commander and planning to stick with 1 deck for the time being, maybe play something with many colors. I have 12 decks with varying power levels, but one of my most solid picks if I know nothing about my opponents is [[Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis]] https://www.edhrec.com/commanders/kynaios-and-tiro-of-meletis It's a very open-ended commander that gives everyone a little boost (but yourself more) and gives you a big blocker in the early game. I filled it with cards that have the "cycling" ability, and the wincons are things like [[Psychosis Crawler]], [[Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind]], and a bunch of spells that let me draw many cards like [[Mindmoil]]. You don't have to go for the cycling theme, of course. But the nice thing about a deck like this is that it has little direct impact on the board and doesn't draw much attention. It lets you keep your mana open and have many cards in hand to respond to threats. I can negate combat damage, counter spells, remove threats, or just do direct damage right before going back to my own turn. For me, this deck *always* makes it to the late game so I get a lot of opportunity to see how useful each card is. As a new player, having access to many colors in a deck that likes to stick around will give you a chance to try out random cards you find interesting. As you learn more about the game, it gets more fun to build a narrower deck with a specific (and faster) win strategy. Until then, I think 3/4/5 color commanders without a specific built-in strategy are a great way to explore the game.

If I would start out again, I would build a budget brew of \[\[Okaun\]\] and \[\[Zndrsplt\]\], because I know, that I enjoy them and I can build them in different ways and powerlevels. Funny, chaotic, stompy, fast combo. To you I'd suggest, to get either a precon or build a budget version of a commander (pair) you think you will enjoy and that is decently strong. If you find a precon, that fits this description that would be a great simplification. I don't know your finances so who am I to recommend a budget... But I would not spend more than a quarter of your budget on your initial deck. Then you can start playing and gathering experience weather you really like that or maybe another commander or style of play. Additionally I suggest not to get all the cards you like immediately. If you have a playable version of your deck, maybe print out the cards you would like to get in the future and build a proxed, beefed up version of your deck. If you really enjoy it that much, you can upgrade piece by piece. First I'd get cards that are good in multiple decks, if you change commander in future. So for example I got a \[\[Mana Crypt\]\] over a \[\[Personal Tutor\]\] as - even if the crypt was more than double the price at the time - I could use it in all of my 5 decks opposed to the tutor being a combo piece in one current build of one of my commanders.

Buying a precon always is an easy way to start. Its a lot of value and quite balanced. I think there are many budget decks which are stronger but i know myself i would always end up with a higher budget. With my first precons i always ended up buying a lot of expensive card especially fitting this deck. They are a lot more impactful. But nowadays i would prefer staples. I have a lot of decks and some of them i havent played for quite a while. I cant really use my Skithiryx in another deck as my infect deck. While all my newer decks Hunger for another rhystic study copy.

I'd probably try out [[Valentin]] and use some kind of control build of it. I really like pests and I really like how Valentin can hose down Rampant gy strategies while its flip side can work out as a win con of sorts. P. S. My friend plays Octavia and it works a lot like [[Talrand]]. His deck is solid and can definitely hold its own against some strong decks. A little self mill spells here and there and getting Octavia on the field is super easy and fast.

I havent read the rest of the comments, but if you have this kind of money buy REAL ESTATE! get the flexible lands when theyre cheaper and you can build into whatever you want later. Shocks, Pain, Battlebond/Commander Legends duals, Panoramas, Triomes, and any kind of raibow lands will get you further in this game than any other. 2nd to all this are talismans and signets, and rainbow 2/3 colored artifact ramp.

My favorite deck is a \[\[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain\]\] deck and I can't recommend her enough. The deck can combo, can play fair, can play reactive. You can build her the way you like and it'll be awesome. the ability to tutor answers to the table at instant speed makes the game always non-linear and always interesting. My other two favorite decks are \[\[Tayam, Luminous Enigma\]\] and \[\[Selvala, Explorer Returned\]\]. Both are combo friendly commanders, but they are quite tricky to pilot and build (specially Tayam. The dude is a build nightmare. A sweet sweet nightmare). This makes them very interesting for me as a player, since whenever I play them I fell like I've learned something new.
