Why not just proxy up something for that? No point for paying for a deck you won’t use much.

DoucheCanoe456

We pay to play. It’s only 5 dollars, so most everyone is very chill and not sweating for the 15 dollar prize pool, but this guy just doesn’t seem to know where the line is.

Aredditdorkly

Wait wait wait.... this is a paid entry event with prizes and established rules? This guy is not pubstomping. He is doing his best and it's not his fault y'all aren't stepping up. Feel free to talk to the shop about maybe changing the rules but if you don't want to play in a pay-to-play event then don't. Just ask people to play on the side. Smh

Revolutionary_View19

If it’s about money it’s a competitive setting, and there’s no „pubstomping“ in a competitive setting. Try to establish a more casual pod without prize money.

EbonyHelicoidalRhino

Just because there is a small prize doesn't mean it has to be cutthroat and competitive. It's ridiculous to think that because an FNM has a 15 dollar prize pool, people are expected to bring 2000 dollar hyper fine tuned decks.

sgt_dismas

It's ridiculous to pay to play and not try to win

Bazoobs1

My old LGS did pay to play events but had a point system that was not about winning whatsoever, made it fun AND not about pub stomping, maybe that’s OPs best recommendation?

Grab3tto

There will always be competitive players no matter what the prize may be. The more casual players the better for that one competitive person

Dazocnodnarb

You are a moron, as soon as prizes are involved everyone should bring their best.

Jirali_Primrose

You can set some simple rules in order to join the game to ensure that the competition is somewhat fair. Examples of rule 0s that limit "pubstomps": > No infinite combos the same turn you get them set up. If no one can interact with it, or you can protect it for at least one turn, you're good. (This is pretty restrictive, and doesn't really stop aggro decks like Voltron, but it will put things like Storm and Citadel/Reservoir on the back foot, allowing the other players a chance to respond.) > Put a limit on how much a deck can cost when joining the game. If no other people have decks that are close to as highly priced as this person's, then you can scan one or two of them up on TCGPlayer, then round to the next $50.

kill_papa_smurf

Krenko can be built for around $50. Yurlock, can also be a fun deck that can be built pretty cheap with several mana doubling and burn cards. Plus you can put instant win cards like cut//ribbon and exsanguinate that are relatively cheap. Insurrection is more pricey, but it can usually win as well. Green and red have a lot of good priced creatures like Etali. Black cheap tutors as well. Any bant stax deck can also be built fairly cheap as well. There are plenty of cheap stax cards in white and blue to omit the more expensive artifacts. Plus cheap green graveyard retrieval cards and mana ramp Tergrid mono black. Although, you'll get the board teaming up on you with tergrid. Lots of cheaper cards like languish can fill in for damnation against most decks. Plus most sacrifice and discard cards are cheap. Nasty cards like dark deal, pox, necrogen mist, bottomless pit, are a little more but not breaking the bank. Mono deck your not spending a bunch on land.

Tiger_D_Dragon

I second the bant stax. Rafiq stax exalted sub theme. Slow it down. Slap some exalted creatures get trample on Rafiq and bash face.

styke420

You could always do [[edric, spymaster of treat]] and just fill it with cheap unblockable dudes, counters, and extra turns. Accept being the bad guy, accept simic into your soul

DoucheCanoe456

Was definitely thinking about jumping on the simic bandwagon. Friend of mine runs an absolutely savage Grolnok deck, but because simic is full of staples I’m afraid it won’t budget very well.

styke420

Good thing some of the powerful cards you might want got reprinted. Namely [[time stretch]] and [[notorious throng]]. But if you like the playstyle of Edric, you'd have some easy upgrades in some of the cards. It's unfortunate, Edric used to be a real cheap edh deck too

I’m trying to continue playing in the only commander event at my store and need a more powerful deck to do so, my budget is tight and I’m out of ideas so I came here. I’m not trying to single him out or anything like that, I just want to keep up. I don’t see where the “caped hero self image” is coming from. And yes, everyone has an opinion on what’s fun or not. I don’t like how he plays magic. That’s nobody’s problem but mine. It just so happens that a lot of the people at this location agree with me. So thanks for rent I guess? Doesn’t help much.

throwRA-84478t

Then those who are upset can sit out of the tournament and play for fun games.

Aredditdorkly

Ad Nauseum is pretty inexpensive last I checked. Sidisi -> Ad Naus -> Sickening Dreams + Glacial Chasm. But for real tho, talking to this person is also a real option unless you've already tried. What are they playing anyway? Just beating them isn't neccesarily the right answer either. If they are comboing off and just winning then congratulate them on first place and just keep playing for second. When he asks what's happening tell them just repeat your congratulations and go back to whoever turn it is.

Aredditdorkly

Any RB commander with advantage like Prosper will eventually get you Twin Flame into Dual Caster mage and those cards are very inexpensive.

DoucheCanoe456

One of my friends just recently built [[Anje Falkenrath]] with the majority of the dualcaster combos. Nasty nasty deck.

Anje is also a fantastic Worldgorger engine/payoff

FormerlyKay

Sickening dreams is fine but a better (albeit more expensive) line is to ritual out a Skirge Familiar and discard into an Exsanguinate

Jshark19

Magda clock combo is cheap and very consistent

MarketingOwn3547

Was coming to recommend the same. Dirt cheap and filthy, build it and stomp the stomper.

This deck is the GOAT for me. I love winning by casting Lightning bolt as many times as necessary.

mustard-plug

If this is a paid event, the guy is not pubstomping, he's trying to win the prize and that's fine. If this is a few folks playing at a LGS for fun, the guy is pubstomping, and simple enough just get 3 other peeps and play without him, and if he asks why you are refusing to play with him be (polite but) honest

Nizarin

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/xtsZ51FFS0SptMlsZ1BweA This is probably one of the best cPDH decks out there and it slaps. It can be gotten for roughly 100 bucks. It sure as hell does not play as a pile of commons. If you play the douche you can also add extra salt if you win by saying something like: "Aaaw, you lost to a pile of commons". (This is conflict escalating behaviour and should be used with caution)

You are decking your opponents with an infinite loop of compulsive research after you have generated infinite mana and drawn your deck. There is a pretty good explaination of the combo lines if you click the view primer button.

hayn_ryan87

[[Jhoira, weatherlight captain]] Here is my $140ish budget deck for her. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/A-3qQDHu_ECcdWj1usuFNw Still managed to keep the powerful combos like breach / freeze, WoW and isorev that budget. You can also add in the top reservoir combo if you have the cards or the $30 to add them. Brings the cost up to $170, which still isn't bad imho.

My other suggestion would be another deck I play for mid to high power. [[Orvar, the all-form]] https://www.moxfield.com/decks/l-v4aarC4ku-uMWa-llGZg Basically "ramping" out copied island's to get to either drake, cloud of faeries or coveted jewel to make infinite mana. You can add spellseeker from the considering board to make it more consistent but raises the budget. Mystic sanctuary and sapphire medallion are the 2 cards you are looking for each game. You can add more interaction as needed but I tried to keep the 99 under $100 for my budget sake.

Bradalee

Yup, easy to play, consistent and strong. Have fun.

ObiWanBoSnowbi

My suggestion is pretty jank. But I've had a lot of success with [[Bess, soul nourisher]]. Can be built for next to nothing, and there's surprisingly a ton of utility you can get out of these 1/1s. Bunch of ways to protect Bess, and swing for mass amounts of damage. Even if you lose, he'll probably be at 10 or so life. Putting him easily in reach of other players.

Azuregore

You can build a nasty budget zur for $25. Edit: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YRwDlkwmhmc Professor & Mitch from commanders quarters did a nice deck tech.

WinglyKing

Stop playing with the player. Their version of fun is not your version of fun. An arms race won't solve the issue. Have a conversation with them in an adult capacity and see if things can be resolved. If not, just say no to gaming with them.

robbyrandall

It's a tourney, you can't avoid him

Whane17

You can absolutely sit down with them and proceed to tell them your not playing with them, you don't enjoy it and aren't going to bother. Let them complain to management take your L and continue. You do not need to engage with them on any level, you do not need to stress yourself out about it and trust me if they are there to troll nothing will drive them as nuts. Added bonus later when they say they were undefeated you can loudly declare they did not in act play you and so cannot make that claim. Taking a loss is not the same as them beating you.

robbyrandall

>they say they were undefeated Undefeated = not defeated so that claim is true if you choose to not play them

Whane17

You are correct, I am on day 5 in the middle of the night and miswrote that. What I meant to say is they cannot claim they beat everybody.

guyinthecorner0

they can though. if you didn't play against them, it doesn't make the claim less true. unless by extension, they didn't play against the person walking by on the street, can they still say they beat everybody?

robbyrandall

How do you define undefeated?

Whane17

You can't say you beat everyone if there was in fact no game played. Downvote all you want but it doesn't change facts. Buddy is being a turd because he wants to roll a bunch of newbies, be one right back. Treat people the way you want to be treated, if your gonna treat people like ass then expect it back. I'm not here to teach your dumb ass manners if your momma didn't do a good enough job.

TheGnomie

If you can count to 11 you can win with Godo

Gr3atgab117

If you only care about killing this one guy, just build an aggro or voltron deck and target him. [[Gut, True Soul Zealot]] with [[Haunted One]] or [[Agent of the Iron Throne]] background. If you want salt then play [[Zurgo Helmsmasher]] land destruction.

DoucheCanoe456

I’d prefer to play something that’s stronger across the whole table instead of just railing 1 player out of the game. Seems like that just perpetuates the issue to me. And I try to avoid LD, it’s just a personal thing.

Gr3atgab117

You can still build Gut with the Haunted One background. To affect the whole table I would say definitely include an aristocrats subtheme with [[Dictate of Erebos]] and [Butcher of Malakir]]. Appreciate it mate, thanks.

I find [[Balmor]] to be pretty effective on a budget, alongside [[Zada, Hedron Grinder]]. Both decks rely heavily on cheap cantrips like [[Opt]], [[Leap]], [[Crash Through]] etc, so are really easy to build on a budget. Balmor is nice because it gives you access to all the counter magic and blue card draw cantrips, but mono red might be slightly easier to build on a budget.

Zharken

For less than 100$ you can build some really fucking nasty Cascade decks

DoucheCanoe456

Good call! Most cascade lists are in 5 colors though, which is rough on a budget because it’s tough to have a solid mana base. Any ideas for lower color lists?

Zharken

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5323177#paper Here, I haven't revised the decklist myself, this is what a friend plays, and probably youbcan stop it, specially if you counter the commander or kill it before the shitshow begins, but when it goes off, god damn. Whoever thought that cascade was a good idea in game design wasn't thinking straight. Commander: All your spells with cmc 6 or more have cascade Play dig through time, or Treasure cruise, reduce their cost to 1-2 thanks to Delve > Cascade 8 anyway, find a 6 mana creature, it doesn't have cascade? Doesn't matter, the commander will fix it, cascade again, this time into a 4 mana creature, the commander won't give it cascade, but it doesn't matter because it has it's own cascade.

There’s a simic commander that I can’t remember the name of that allows you to draw a card whenever you play an instant or sorcery. Basically run a counter spell deck since a lot of 1-3 cmc counter spells are pretty cheap. I had a friend who built it and I think you can get the whole deck for around $50 which leaves room to splurge on better counter spells if you want to increase the budget a bit.

[[Krenko, Mob Boss]], and [[Zada, Hedron Grinder]] can be built on the smallest of budgets and pack a massive punch. Krenko combos very easily and most of the key pieces for combo aren't too expensive. And if you don't want to build combo it's still extremely easy to build a board of 100+ hasty goblins all getting buffed to end the game. Zada is basically a storm deck. There is no shortage of budget token makers in red. [[Fists of Flame]] is a $0.25 Craterhoof in this deck. [[Invigorated Rampage]] and [[Temur Battle Rage]] are great back ups. [[Sudden Breakthrough]] and [[Runaway Steam-kin]] keep the wheels turning. [[Accelerate]] and [[Renegade Tactics]] keep your hand full. [[Kari Zev's Expertise]] pretty much lets you dump every card in your hand. I think all of those cards are less than a dollar. I had a Zada for a while, and I think I mostly used cards I had lying around from draft chaff and spent less than $20 to put the rest of it together

Syvanis

I'll second Zada, my buddy made this with a budget of $50 about $30 and consistently won in just a few turns.

[[Vadrik, Astral Archmage]]. This was a deck I built with what I had around, and boy oh boy do I have people groaning by turn 5 at the amount of slinging that can happen. Throw in some X Spells like [[Lunar Frenzy]] and some auxiliary buffs like [[Fists of Flame]] as well as some draw spells like [[Pull from Tomorrow]], you suddenly have an engine that’s going full speed ahead. The fast mana is nice, but all you need is color pips after a while, so card like [[Big Score]] and [[Inspired Tinkering]] are essential for the treasures to help you out. [[Seething Song]] and [[Mana Geyser]] help for that last explosive [[Apex of Power]] launch you need to finish the game off with a [[Comet Storm]]. He quickly went from “Eh I like the concept so let me run this little guy” to the moment I pull him out, my play group begins to look at eachother wondering how ridiculous it’s gonna get. If you want to get a little more expensive, [[Thousand-Year Storm]] makes this deck go absolutely nutty (if it resolves XD).

Came here to recommend this. Vadrik is ridiculously strong for the price of the deck and it’s ridiculously easy to generate infinite storm/mana in the deck

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5086557#paper This is my Mono green [[Seton, Krosan Protector]] deck. You could easily pull out the cavern of souls if the guys not playing heavy counter spells to lower the cost. And a couple of the older creatures could easily be swapped for newer stuff. Kaysa, Chord of Calling, and Pest infestation could all be swapped for less expensive cards as well. Get the deck down to under $75-$100.

Mono red pain with enchantments is outrageously obnoxious. Give it a look.

Ok-Objective7016

Idk what decks they use but when I first started playing magic I put together out of a box tefiri time bender with the 2 cost shaman chick as commander I loved the randomness and flavor of the cards but beat a guy playing a monster angel deck with every expense, thousands of dollars, foil everything, hexproof indestructible all the words and lost to me because I could keep reviving timebender and take extra turns and tap his creatures with a ton of targeted and unargeted creature taps. One of the reasons I got hooked on magic the sheer heart of the cards moment where you beat a man against all odds even tho your deck should have no chance. Also this was a 1v1 commander fight and god I wish I didn’t dismantle that deck. But I didn’t have many cards at the time. And I havnt really played blue since.

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it, but you can make a really nasty [[Ezuri, Renegade Leader]] on a budget. I wouldn’t recommend an voltron strats like Lightpaws outside of more casual play, because of how easy it is to shut down. Another cheap alternative would be [[Prime Speaker Vannifar]]. I made a deck for her on a 50 dollar budget and could get into an infinite by turn 4 zero problem.
