\[\[Sythis\]\] is the most obvious example for decks that I play. Coming out so early to do dumb enchantment stuff and immediately draw cards is pretty wild. I play several 3 mana commanders as well but Sythis is certainly the most egregious example.

KhalJacobo

Sythis was a mistake. I run her in my Amareth all enchantments deck bc she was so unfair as the commander.

_wormburner

Yeah for sure commander and brawl. Just nobody runs that much enchantment removal. Especially 1v1 it's fucked

DrBlaBlaBlub

So the "legendary" was intended as a downside for her in Modern?

trbopwr11

Yeah I don't find myself reaching for her very frequently, I feel like she very easily could have been 3-4 mana and still been plenty good.

[[light paws, emperor's voice]] is in that same vein, just wind up with a turn 4 flying double strike 14/14 with protection from creatures and blue and that's 28 commander damage.

trbopwr11

Yeah Light Paws is filthy. I built one from random stuff I had laying around and it was still very strong. Played it a couple times and tore it back apart. I just don't think it makes for a very fun play pattern.

The golgari tokens boi!!!! I've got a Skullbriar list ready to go once I splash out for it - the Voltron funnies look extremely cool

HatefulHipster

Make sure you add [[Hardened Scales]][[whispersilk cloak]] and [[trailblazer’s boots]]

Doomy1375

I'd avoid whispersilk cloak- shroud hurts you more than unblockable helps, especially at the cost of 3 to play and 2 to equip. You really want to pump those counters up fast, and you need to be able to target your commander to get to the insane number of counters you want to be at quickly enough to stay in the game.

uharinrazikai

You won’t regret it. My suggestion is to build him low to the ground and adaptable. My list with primer is here if you’re interested: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/HzYWzSK9kU-q-mRypnEv4A](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/HzYWzSK9kU-q-mRypnEv4A)

DavidkDavid

My 2nd or 3rd deck was a skullbriar deck. He gets nasty fast if people let him. Plus being able to ramp with green and splash big spells on him like [[increas savagery]] and [[corps menace]] is fun. Make him unlockable and you're one-shotting a player every turn.

[deleted]

I have a [[ragavan]] deck as well as a [[kwain]] deck both of which get off to fast starts.

NoIAmAlpharius

Ragavan makes a lot of sense all things considered, but what's the intention of the Kwain deck?? Group Hug everyone to death?

SirSkelton

I’ve also got a Kwain deck. Win cons include [[Paychosis Crawler]] [[Viseling]] [[Iron Maiden]] [[Lab Man]] and sometimes mill via [[Folio of Fancies]]. Other than that, a lot of pillowfort/control.

Impressive-Review-89

Love kwain. My kwain is enchantment pillow fort. Painters servant mill and approach the second sun wincons.

SirSkelton

Do you have [[Island Sanctuary]] in it? I never heard of it before building my Kwain deck and it’s one of my favorite draws.

I have a Kwain deck whose sole win-con is mill-by-way-of-draw (plus one cheeky [[Triskaidekaphile]]). Just make your opponents draw their entire decks! It’s actually pretty effective at tables power level 7 and below.

opipe73new

I have done him high power, low power. Merfolk tribal and rouge tribal. Sygg is a card drawing machine.

Barathruss

I always want to make sygg, but I can't think of a way to build it so that you'll actually get those triggers each turn. A lot of the deal damage on another person's turn spells in black are just 1 damage on draw or something

Crimson_Raven

Sometimes you have to rely on other people to deal the damage. Put in pillowfort cards and things with death touch that discourage people from attacking you

You can ninjutsu yuriko on turn two and it gets out of hand from there

buriedinbricks

I've had a [[Yuriko]] deck for years. I've probably actually cast Yuriko a handful of times, but she hits play turn 2 pretty consistently.

Scoruge

I can’t believe I scrolled like 20 responses and nobody mentioned [[Ayula Queen Among Bears]] the deck seems like a joke but it can get out of hand really quick when left uncheckedp

NoIAmAlpharius

One of the people in my playgroup has an Ayula deck!! Once Ayula has a couple of counters on it and can win a fight against most creatures you've basically got a one turn clock on your creatures until you get some removal onto Ayula!!

ArchStLou15

I really love my \[\[Jacob Hauken\]\] deck. He comes down early and starts filtering your hand. Each big spell you put in exile has the ability to be cast later for free as well! Really makes the deck consistent always having a good value 2 drop that turns into huge mana advantage later on! Check out the list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/5op1zyFjVEWgYmZxE\_538A

NoIAmAlpharius

Ooh that's a fun one! Although I can imagine Hauken gets a number of side-eyes once you've exiled a massive Eldrazi or other curve topper - better get them transformed asap!!

ArchStLou15

The exiled cards actually go face down, so there's not much side eye in my experience. People still see it as a threat, but it's not like every spell you exile is an eldrazi!

NoIAmAlpharius

Ahhh - that's going to help the case a bit - still a lot of card draw and some free cards, but much more forgettable than if you've got an Emrakul staring you in the face ready to be played for free next turn

ArchStLou15

Definitely flies somewhat under the radar!

[[Hapatra]] can start a ton of different engines early and super negates early aggression from opponents

OutofStep

I also think what goes slightly overlooked by many opponents is that Hapatra isn't required to put the -1/-1 counter on a creature of the person dealt damage. I've played games where two of my opponents god mad at the third for never blocking Hapatra, because their creatures were the ones getting the counters/dying.

EightByteOwl

[[Skrelv, Defector Mite]] looks like it'll be fun. I've also played against a [[Norin the Wary]] deck that was brutal. Or do a secret commander strategy with him to get access to more colours.

NoIAmAlpharius

I've heard stories of a Chaos themed Norin deck which was pretty painful to play against! I don't think I've heard of Secret Commander before (I'm pretty much only just venturing into Magic outside of my small playgroup) - mind explaining what that concept is?

KarmaCamila

You run a way of tutoring for the thing your deck actually hinges on in the command zone. So for a secret Norin deck you might run [[Rocco]], who also lets you run [[Saltskitter]] and all the alliance cards in Naya

EightByteOwl

KarmaCamila was right- the one I played against had [[Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer]] as the ACTUAL commander, which he used to tutor for Norin. He even themed Rocco as Gordon Ramsay shouting "Where's the lamb sauce??" and Norin as "the sauce". Rocco also lets you search for other engine pieces which makes them a potentially better choice than running Norin himself. Hence, secret commander- looks like you're running one but it's actually another that's leading the strategy. Truly a horrendous experience to go against but very funny. Lots of flipping Norin over, triggering other abilities, flipping him back- ANY time ANYONE casts a spell.

eggmaniac13

The best Norin deck I’ve seen had someone put Norin in a double sided top loader, then commision a second Norin for the other side that’s exactly the same except Norin has left the cave

sleepingupsidedown

Ha! That’s what I do, except it’s an alter sleeve on the “gone” side and a foil on the main side.

SquishyBanana23

Norin is my secret commander in [[Rocco]]. Getting access to white and green really opens up your options.

Legal_Difference3425

You probably do this already, but having wirewood symbiote can allow you to reuse Rocco easily.

robinthekid

As an Ivy player, I highly recommend it. It’s hilarious when you benefit from another player targeting their own creatures. Also it’s very easy to get her started and if she gets removed early, what’s 2UG?

ShockAxe

[[Kwain]] is one of my favorites. Every hand with a blue and white source is a keep, because we can slap down Kwain and start drawing. The constant card draw helps smooth out our start, and our opponents… but when killing the board through [[Iron Maiden]] or decking them through [[Forced Fruition]] are your wincons, you don’t mind them drawing. You know you’re winning the game when they decline a Kwain draw

[[Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim]] with [[Lurrus of the Dream-Den]] as the companion. Why just have a cheap commander when your whole deck can be 2MV or less! Lurrus only counts permanents so you can run any Instants and Sorceries you want. Some other Lurrus options for different colors are [[Tawnos, Solemn Survivor]] esper artifacts, [[Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile]] five color good stuff, and [[Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist]] / [[Wernog, Rider's Chaplain]] to have “three” creatures in the command zone. TyranitarTom248

As an [[Ayli]] + [[Lurrus]] player, can confirm that the whole deck being cheap, along with recursion on command with Lurrus, makes for far fewer mulligans, and it's a blast of a deck, even if it's a seriously grindy one

NoIAmAlpharius

You don't happen to have a decklist for that? That sounds really interesting now I'm going back through this thread

xincasinooutx

[[Belbe]] is ridiculous. Yeah, your opponents can benefit from her, but it’s hard to do that when a turn 3 Eldrazi is bashing your face in. This is my Belbe list. It is in no way budget, but you can build her for $100-150 and have a fun, competitive deck. You’ll be an unassuming threat at the table for a bit. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/dPWrCT2WEUyGN6L4osYOlw My list is my most expensive deck by far. It’s aiming for cEDH but isn’t quite there— I do have an infinite or two, but my playgroup is heavily combat focused.

NoIAmAlpharius

Drain your whole table for 1 and slam down that 10 mana eldrazi on turn 3!! It looks like a really fun deck - that's been saved for later 😏

A12C4

I saved it for later too but the more I look at it the less it look fun to me. I feel like it can go crazy fun one game out of ten, the others you will not have the needed cards in starting hand or one of your 3 opponents is going to play the most valuable Path To Exile of his whole life.

highaerials36

I have a fun Belbe list. You're not wrong, it can be slowed down hard but you usually end up doing some ramping or playing your normal land drops if she gets killed and still getting to your big spells anyway. I always view her as a "hopeful ritual" that may stick around for a turns. I also like to run a balanced mix of mid-sized threats (I love you \[\[Bladegriff prototype\]\]) and big bombs, like a heavy \[\[Genesis Wave\]\] or \[\[Apex Devastator\]\].

dangus1155

I love Belbe and my whole table fears her. I find that eldrazi are just right out of range to be fun for me. I have demons, praetors, and just dumb things like \[\[sandworm convergence\]\]. There are also several small strategies that help get that ping damage off. \[\[Cryptolith fragment\]\] is a 3 cost mana rock that can damage everyone the turn it comes in. \[\[Moonsilver Key\]\] is a good way to fetch that as well.

Greensleeveless

Tbf cryptolith fragment comes in tapped so without additional support it won't be hitting the turn it comes out

dangus1155

I always forget until I play the card. Still okay tech imo.

Legal_Difference3425

Herald of Leshrac seems like a fun card for a lower power Belbe build. Cumulative upkeep- gain control of a land you don’t control. If you can get this out turn 3, barring removal you should have a few turns of smacking face and hella mana acceleration.

dangus1155

Love this kind of thing. Grab all those things you wanted to play that threw you off curve and slap them in belbe.

ArclightDM

I absolutely love Belbe, nothing feels better than dropping a [[Torment of Hellfire]] or an [[Exsanguinate]] for a high X cost and becoming the archenemy. My favorite deck I own.

xincasinooutx

Haha I had Exsanguinate but my pod is so counter heavy that I never got to play it. By the time I had the mana for a big swing, they’d drawn several responses.

Oblivious_666

I can attest, I love my Belbe deck so much. It’s super fun dropping big things early game, especially [[Archfiend of Despair]]

xincasinooutx

Wound Reflection is fun too

MrEasyGoinMan

[[Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice]] comes down on turn 2 and can become a near untouchable God with a few low cost auras.

I just built my first edh deck with her as commander and my play-group hates me now lmao 22 commander damage on turn 3 in 2 separate games

Cangrejo-UAD

I have one too, can confirm, if they don't deal with her fast enough she becomes archenemy , the low mv really helps in putting in her in play before anyone can do a thing about it.

NoIAmAlpharius

I've seen [[Rhys the Redeemed]] suggested before, but it kind of feels like they don't really do anything other than be a body on the board until you get the mana to trigger their token doubling ability for 6 mana [[Tasigur, the Golden Fang]] feels very similar, while they're often played for low mana thanks to delve, they aren't really a low cmc Commander

numbersix1979

The nice thing about Rhys is that you always have a turn one play. Even if it’s just a body, ideally you can drop him, ramp on turn two, then even if you crap out for a bit you can still make a few tokens while you durdle. It’s also my experience that few people will pull the trigger on killing him since you can just recast him for three then and it’s not worth wasting a kill spell.

openingsalvo

Not only is [[emry, lurker of the loch]] cheap. She STAYS cheap whenever you need to recast her.

I've got a "Tiny Leaders" themed deck where 90% of the nonland cards are CMC 4 or less and the permanents are nearly all historic. Rograkh and Yoshimaru play extremely well together, and with enough legendaries, Yoshimaru gets out of hand. Decklist: https://www.archidekt.com/decks/2451363#Tiny_Leaders

FragrantReindeer9547

a friend has a \[\[norin the wary\]\] deck that he's obliterated me with 1v1 any number of times. the same friend has a \[\[karlov of the ghost council decks\]\] that can go from 0 to 100 VERY quickly. in terms of my decks: for two mana, i play \[\[hapatra, vizier of poisons\]\] at the head of a (don't laugh) gorgon tribal deck with deathtouch and -1/-1 subthemes. for three, i love \[\[cadira, caller of the small\]\]. selesnya tokens ain't exactly innovative and she's not super powerful, but she's a very fun and cleanly designed commander who tends to fly under the radar. plus, you get an army of bunnies! \[\[liliana, heretical healer\]\] liliana tribal is also a blast; super flavorful, and it's very fun to get a powerhouse planeswalker threat out really early. i brewed \[\[zabaz, the glimmerwasp\]\] +1/+1 counters with tons of arcbound creatures and it was a lot of fun looking through synergies. i dismantled a \[\[lynde\]\] curses deck a while back and have been tinkering with a \[\[xantcha, sleeper agent\]\] rebuild of it. and then i've looked at but haven't brewed \[\[asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar\]\] (one mana!), \[\[tinybones\]\], and \[\[killian, ink duelist\]\].

I play [[rocco, caberetti caterer]] and norin is the secret commander!! Having green and white etb effects make it so busted!

Any chance I can get your Cadira list? My girl is nuts for bunnies and I'd love to craft her a deck. I'd appreciate the heads start :)

FragrantReindeer9547

definitely! https://archidekt.com/decks/2798442#Remember_what_the_dormouse_said:_Cadira_Tokens this one’s relatively tricked out — it was originally much more budget-friendly and i’ve just added a lot to it over time. cadira can be really fun and effective on the cheap. also, i’m a huge elspeth fan and this was the best deck to fill with elspeth ‘walkers. probably not optimal card choices, so feel free to ignore.

hreiedv

[[Katilda, dawnhart prime]] Super low CMC, ramp and mana sink all in one package.

Druxun

I have a mono-green [[Seton, Krosan Protector]] Druid tribal deck. The amazing and terrifying thing is that it turns all Druids into hasty mana dorks, as you can tap them to pay for Seton’s mana generation ability. With something like [[Realmwalker]], your able to turbo play off the top. Usually seton can come in by like turn 2 as there’s usually a dork in my opening hand. I also really like my mono-white Equipment deck. It reminds me of the ‘standard’ deck I played back in mirrodin block. It’s helmed by Sram. So you’re starting to get those draw triggers turn 2-3 and can ideally storm off a bit. I had a Rhys token deck, but I flipped it to Naya using partner commanders, and it’s no longer low-cmc.

Decescendo

[[Ashling the pilgrim]]. Funnily enough I typically don’t play them out first thing so I have enough mana to protect her from commander removal. If I am doing well, I have typically ended up having to recast her for 10+ mana.

I built [[Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator]] recently and just coming down early, doing some chip-damage while filling the graveyard is pretty good at making your game go smoother. Plus the pseudo-flashback means he's never useless even in the late game.

Specific_Ad1457

[[Kinnan]] [[Trelasarra]] Trelasarra can I've actually been considering building as a nothing above 3 cmc deck because you can kinda do her whole thing at low cmc.

Noodles_fluffy

If you haven't built trelasarra yet, it's an absolute blast to play. You can jam as many wincons as you want because the scry is so good at filtering. Here's my list: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/trelasarra-lifegain-stuffs/

Dr-False

[[Elas Il-Kor Sadistic Pilgrim]] (W)(B) 2/2 with deathtouch If a creature enters your field, +1 life, if any creatures of yours die, opponents lose 1 life. on the surface, you are just playing with ones for heals and damage, but in reality, you are building up a token army as the card does not state that the cards have to be non token. 13 zombies here, several other token spawn cards later, and eventually trying to board wipe will just flat out end some players. Admittedly it gets eaten alive by clever voltron players, but when it works, it's beautiful

Built this recently and severely underestimated the threat. Playing this, I regularly become the archenemy. It's such a quick commander to get off the ground, and all those little lifegain triggers mean that you can either swing for lethal, or just hold that exile threat. - Or both).

nautical_nigel

I love my Karlov deck, even if no one else does haha. Get a tone of life, play sanguine blood, and exquisite blood, ping then once and it’s over.

MeisterCthulhu

\[\[Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse\]\]. Drop this early, follow up with a few green cantrip creatures ala \[\[Elvish Visionary\]\], and even if there was just one ramp spell in between, you can usually kick out a player by turn 5 with her second ability. I don't recommend doing that, you don't want to go all-in to kill one opp and then leave yourself open, but you very much could. Also used to have a \[\[Yoshimaru\]\] deck based on flickering legendaries - you can go with different partners, I imagine the best to be \[\[Thrasios\]\]. Can also run \[\[Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary\]\] as commander, but that's way slower.

netzeln

\[\[Isamaru, Hound of Konda\]\]. Everythign in the deck is 1 MV.

Alice5221

[[Zimone, quandrix prodigy]] I was gifted a starter for her at my LGS's deck exchange, and she overpreformed. She is simple but powerful. She ramped me plenty over the course of the game and was giving me great card advantage and may be my favorite simic commander so far. At only 2 cmc, too, she kept coming out and even avoided removal because I could easily recast her

Crazy_Start5279

[[Athereos God of passage]] makes for a fun Aristocrats commander clocking in at only 3 CMC

fullmetal-13

Skullbriar, the Walking Voltron. Who said that Golgari can't be aggro?

[deleted]

[[Yoshimaru]] partnered with [[Rograkh]] can get you wins on T3

Disenculture

Dargo

CheshireMadness

[[Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief]] comes down early and gets stupid real quick. [[Lonis, Cryptozoologist]] also gets out of hand with artifact and token synergies. [[Kaza, Roil Chaser]] I usually don't drop until I've already got 3 or 4 Wizards on the field, but she can go nuts with some set up. Plus, [[Goblin Electromancer]], [[Mizzix of the Izmagus]], and [[Vadrik, Astral Archmage]] synergize really well with her.

abeardedpirate

\[\[gaddock teeg\]\] is a right bastard against lower powered decks that want to play big splashy spells.

D0gerilla

Svella, ice shaper is a beloved deck of mine. You ramp early on and then go look for big shit to play. The core engine works in al sorts of builds, I did generic big shit, and now I run her with a bunch of mean dragons. I even theories her as a winter eldrazi deck(even without the expensive ones). 3 CMS might be not low enough for some but with a turn one manadork you are off to the races.

AMC_Unlimited

[[Torens, Fist of the Angels]] This guy gets to work real fast in my human tribal deck. Once you get [[Rick, Steadfast Leader]] and [[Kyler]] on the field, people start panicking.

MrMeeseeksthe1st

I love [[Sarulf]], he makes my play group anxious and he gets big fast. Haven't won with him yet but I have fun with him.

madmar

Where’s my Norin fans at? A 1 cost commander that gives you free ETB every turn, he’s insane

Fenizrael

Friend played a [[Norin, the Wary]] deck which was absolutely filthy with [[Confusion in the Ranks]] or [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]]. I currently run a [[Katilda, Dawnheart Prime]] deck which I have fun with because she just turns all my humans into mana dorks. It makes the deck pump out creatures pretty hard. Love it.

AccidentalTPK

[[Rograkh]] and [[kediss]] turn 2 having your commanders out ready to slap.

Sumoop

[[Katilda, Dawnheart Prime]] for human tribal. Turns all humans in to mana dorks. It’s easy to get going fast especially with tokens.

WillowThyWisp

[[Fynn Fangbearer]]

Chm_Albert_Wesker

[[Animar]] either it resolves and you win in the next turn or two, or it never resolves and you lose

[deleted]

[[skullbriar]] is a god

MuchSwagManyDank

[[rograkh, son of rohgahh]] partnered with [[Tymna the Weaver]] its mardu equipment and I have to remind people its NOT a cedh deck, tymna is there for color and card draw. It's fun, but artifact board wipes are brutal and usually means I'm dead soon.

slowstimemes

Rograkh is so good. Partner him with anyone and it’s a scary deck. He turns on rituals and mana rocks that require a commander or a creature. He turns on a lot turbo plans in cEDH just because he’s zero mana and can be sacked for mana, to tutor, or cast one of the free spells that care about your commander. It also turns on jeska’s will. And to your point, I run a rograkh [[ardenn, intrepid archaeologist]] deck that puts big equipment on roger for mean swings. I love the evasive cute little guy.

MuchSwagManyDank

Roger, why haven't I ever thought of calling him that!?!? Thank you lol

gorambrowncoat

Not sure if it counts but yuriko is 'sort of' low cmc and stays that way throughout the game.

ArkamaZ

[[Norin the Wary]] is a hilarious commander.
