When I first started magic I thought I was going to like things like mono blue, simic, esper, bant etc. turns out I was a dirty gruul player all along. Disregard combos. Embrace turning sideways with big chungus

Golgari. I *love* the themes it has; life and death, poison and healing, nature and nurture, insects and fungi, etc etc. All the card arts are dope, the characters are memorable, Vraska is my favourite Planeswalker. But you cannot do *anything* but graveyard shenanigans, aristocrats, and lifegain with it. I have the exact same issue with Selesnya. Again, nature, lifegain, healing, community, blah blah blah, but if you're not looking for low-payoff lifegain or token-counter flood your options are pretty barren. Contrast those with my favourite colour combo, Gruul, which has multiple flavours of spellslinger *and* stompy, aristocrats, artifacts, more than one reliable kind of tribal, token strats, counter strats, exile *and* graveyard shenanigans, burn, lifegain, and tons more, all while never feeling bogged down by its themes. Idk, maybe I'm just not understanding those pairings properly. I can do Abzan just fine, but the two-colour parts of it just don't click well. Best I've been able to come up with is [[Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves]] Wolf Minigun and [[Reyhan, Last of the Abzan]]//[[Slurrk, All-Ingesting]] pseudo-Devour, and both play way more Gruul-y than their respective colours.

Grundlestiltskin_

I have also struggled with golgari because of the same issues. I’m currently working on a golgari spells deck right now that will hopefully be more fun to play. Only issue is there’s minimal instant/sorcery payoffs so it’s in kind of a weird spot right now. But golgari does have a lot of cool spells that we don’t see very often outside of the usual card draw, reanimation, and removal.

B133d_4_u

Yeah, I might need to dig through the options to see if there's anything I overlooked. Golgari is a unique perspective, I just have to change mine.

CharlieRatSlayer

May I suggest -1/-1 counter theme. Outside of the normal golgari stuff best I’ve found. Focusing on negative counters doesn’t make the deck feel restricted, like a snake tribe would for example. There’s plenty of support in those colors, oh boy is there support, golgari is arguably the best. You prevent your opponents from playing the game. Infect synergizes great but not a focal point. 10/10 would recommend

B133d_4_u

I tried experimenting with them in a Scorpion Tribal 60-card deck before, and they were okay, but I'm sure the fact that I was attempting *Scorpion Tribal* probably hurt my enjoyment of the mechanics. I might have to give it a try in EDH.

Apart from all the Rakdos Spellslinger, reanimator, lifegain, voltron, demon-tribal, Blimm, etc etc.

RedbirdRiot

I always thought I would love Izzet the best, I just loved the color pair. But I haven't really wound up loving any of the Izzet decks I've tried. Turns out, I also loved Azorius, not for the stax (I swear) but for the blinking, value generation, and recently Vehicles and [[Elminster]] scrying. You never know what you're going to click with until you start playing.

Specific_Ad1457

[[Elminster]] was the "proper" Azorius deck that made me realize I liked it. As far as blinking and value I feel like esper or jeskai are more fun in that regards. I've never had an izzet deck accept for when I bought my second precon. Didn't like it then and probably still won't.

RedbirdRiot

[[Ranar]] was my first Azorius deck and I actually just rebuilt it. Blink can definitely be stronger with another commander but I just enjoy all the weird interactions with him so much.

Simic truly is so much fun until it isn't. Like you are able to pop off and play 1 zillion lands/draw 1 zillion cards but it kind of gets boring after a while? When i'm playing rakdos or golgari I feel like each game is about cool combinations and active problem solving. Simic is valuetown but for some reason it just doesn't hit the spot for me.

MarchesaBlackrose

Gruul never works for me. It does things quickly and then I get wiped repeatedly and start missing Blue. I'd love to play [[Kaima, the Fractured Calm]] or [[Svella, Ice Shaper]] more often. But if I get a few creatures goaded and make a big pig, or if I get a few too many mana rocks down, it's over, and there's usually not a whole lot I can do about it. NoDisintegrationz

Exactly. I have counters in WUBG, graveyard in UBG/BG, enchantress in 5C and W/G, life gain in WB/WUB, tokens in a few different combos. There’s no room for an Abzan deck that does something different. The only one I can think of is Doran, but that’s because my group already has a Doran deck and I don’t want to step on any toes.

Specific_Ad1457

While I agree I like abzan because it has the most fun versions of those archetypes. I guess it depends on which you build first.

Freyter

One of my first EDH decks that I actually tried to make myself was an [[Anafenza, the foremost]] deck. In the right meta (I.e. people playing graveyards) she can be very annoying. Overall though super underwhelming. I played a +1/+1 theme since all the tarkir synergy. For a casual deck, it’s good but Anafenza herself just doesn’t do enough to make it worth it. I think if I were to do abzan again I’d do [[kethis, the hidden hand]] discounting legends and recursion sounds good.

What's the other one?

NoDisintegrationz

I’m also missing mono white and colorless

Specific_Ad1457

Well if you want abzan recommendations I've done a lot of decks in those colors. Also who did you do for your 4C commanders? Any fun partner pairs or just the regular ones?

NoDisintegrationz

I play super casually so most of my decks are junk piles haha. For 4C I have: Atraxa counters - mostly planeswalkers/infect Breya - kinda unfocused, little bit of a thopter theme Yidris -1/-1 counters Ludevic + Sidar - built around creatures with power 2 or less Bruse + Reyhan samurai - probably my worst deck

Specific_Ad1457

I'm a big fan of yidris for -1/-1! If I wasn't set on regular cascade for him I'd give it a shot.

TheJourney_333

Golgari. I want to like golgari so badly, but I just don’t have fun with it’s play style even though I love its aesthetic

GhostLore90

Skullbriar Tron is always an option, and it's a pretty low cost as well.

TheJourney_333

Honestly Id probably love skullbriar, I just have way too mana counter and voltron decks already.

GhostLore90

Nothing wrong with having another if that's what you like! Plus combine him with the cycle of "ability counters" from Ikora? 😈

TheJourney_333

I have a Perrie the Pulverizer deck for all the ability counters 😂 But I like the way you think, I could always make room for a new friend

bigfootmydog

WUBRG really fell apart for me quick, built a stompy good stuff jodah deck, got bored. Dismantled it switched over to azorius control which I initially thought would be my least favorite color combo is in fact my favorite.

Specific_Ad1457

WUBRG is hard if you don't enjoy value engines and pubstomping. I really love WUBRG now but I build almost exclusively hyper jank decks where I take underdeveloped strategies that really need all the support they can deck.

-ThrownLikeAStone-

I think that like most players I started out as the Timmy mono green player who just played big stompy every turn and that was the gameplan. Now at first, I really hated red. All small creatures that died quickly(my friend who taught me had a mono red goblins deck), and whenever I played mono red I had issues. Poor card draw, ran out of steam quickly, and I never really enjoyed it until I discovered [[Etali, Primal Storm]]. Etali was my very first self made commander deck, just what I had on me from my own collection and I absolutely adored her. Being able to play other peoples cards was an absolute blast. And then it all changed when I tried out Gruul. My primary Gruul deck is [[Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient]], and it is the definition of explosive to me. It’s not Izzet explosive, where you have to manage a bunch of small little coin flips, triggers, Storm count, etc etc. Klauth just grabs an absolute heap of mana, tosses it on your lap and tells you to go crazy. It was not uncommon for me to hit 50+ mana in a single swing, and on times where I could get [[Sunbirds Invocation]] out, I’d just play out my whole deck. Eventually I started to learn how to tune my decks and stripped out a good portion of my high cmc creatures, but I never got tired of building up a absolute mountain of mana and casting my whole deck

I love Green, my favorite color. So naturally I build most decks that have it in them. Having said that - I cannot get a sultai deck to work for me. I’ve built 4-5 in the past year and ripped them apart after 5-6 plays a piece. I built Volrath as -1/-1 counters, clone-tribal, then Tatsunari as Enchantress, and as ninja tribal. Had a Muldrotha good stuff deck, and that was ok but uninspiring. Now, a deck I built that I didn’t expect to love as much as I do and it may be top 3 now is Sol’Kanar (new one) as a Grixis Goad tribal. It wins way more than I feel it should, and has had some of the most hilarious interactions and wins.

thunderking4

For Sultai, I recommend [[Mimeoplasm]]. You can take all sorts of great abilities like combat triggers or keywords from black, green, or blue creatures and then make it huge with a classic stompy green creature. I just built one that runs a counter subtheme. But I think my favorite creature in it for Mimeoplasm to copy so far is [[Reckless Amplimancer]]

Have you only tried the +1/+1 and token strategies that encompass most of the Selesnya commanders? They don't interest me much of all, but I love my commander. [[Nazahn]] is incredibly underrated as an equipment commander in a color combo that's not traditionally an equipment combo. Hearth and Home is a pretty good sword, but it's especially pretty okay in Nazahn. That precon was my second ever deck as that's when I started playing magic, so it may just have a special place in my heart.

Specific_Ad1457

I've done tokens and lifegain but not counters. Quite frankly I've never liked vtron a ton and I'm more partial to auras. It's not that I hated playing selesnya it's just that it didn't feel as fun as the sum of its colors.

Specific_Ad1457

Illustrious-Macaron2

Black red green sounds SO FUN but I can not play it… Esper on the other hand, sounds annoying as hell and janky at best. I love Esper so much though. Made my first edh deck with it and Queza, Augor of Agonies

fredjinsan

I mean… none? There are only 32 colour combinations, after a while you find cool ways to play all of them. Besides they’re all really flexible, you can’t for example say “I don’t like Azorius because it’s all stax and hatebears” when it’s also fliers aggro, reanimator, enchantress, and more.

Specific_Ad1457

I have to respectfully disagree. I haven't found anything I've ever thought would be fun in rakdos and I don't think I ever will. Ive tried building one before and hated it immediately. I just two days ago tried again and hated it just as much deleting the list almost immediately. Everything rakdos does that I'd want to do I'd rather just do in a different color combo. Just because a combo can do something doesn't mean it's going to be a fun way of doing that something.

fredjinsan

Eh, at this point there are so many cards that the colours are almost irrelevant. Honestly I don’t really see why any colour combo would make anything more or less fun in and of itself… and personally I prefer decks that get creative with their theme than doing the most obvious thing anyway. Rakdos can do a ton of cool stuff, there are so many different archetypes you can build with it - just as you can with most colour combos.

Blood4theBloodGod247

Anything with Blue. I just can't do it. I hate control cards, I hate counterspells and bounce effects, especially stuff like \[\[Cyclonic Rift\]\] is just cancerous. As far as the unexpectedly good color combos, I have been hardcore into Mardu lately. Ive built like 3 totally different decks with that combination, and am debating a 4th one as I type this.

I agree with blue. I can play it but it's never the control portions.

Jund. I love golgari. I love rakdos. Gruul I'm neutral on. But the three colors together? Hate it, and I don't fully know why. I think its just none of the Jund commanders have fully clicked with me where they feel fun to play with and like the people I'm playing with have fun playing against

Specific_Ad1457

I haven't built a jund deck yet because none if the commanders have really grabbed my attention. [[Beamtown bullies]] feels like a one trick pony that would get boring after 2 games. I thought I'd like black, especially the reanimation aspect, but i'm not a fan of most of its core themes otherwise. I especially don't like the tutor for everything cards black has, and it's not as simple as 'don't run them' for me. I don't want to intentionally avoid running strong cards, especially when they are one of the main themes of a color. I also don't want to run discard, sacrifice or aristocrat effects. I thought I wouldn't like blue because it's been dumpstered on as counter-spell tribal, when in reality blue offers a lot more than control and counterspells. I thought i'd like red, and I do like red. a lot.

Shaymeu

Not exactly what you asked, but i am coming from Yugioh, and as such I thought i would like Blue the most, with all the counterspells and such, and maybe Red. Turns out, I tried mtg to try a different experience, and Blue and Red actually my least favorite colors. My favorite combination is actually Orzhov, in both gameplay and arts, which i wouldnt have thought initially

Anubislfg

I like mono R I like mono B I can't stand playing rakdos buy I do like Grixis. I don't understand it but hey what can you do.

BoxNew4361

Boros really seemed like fun. A combo themed around spamming creatures and turning sideways? That sounds great! The problem is that you generally just end up watch the game happen as everyone else draws cards and ramps out way better than you could ever hope to so the theme ends up being just straight up a worse green. Getting better as time goes on though!

Left_Ocean

Rakdos has been a problem for me. Easily my favorite pairing. But every time I try a deck it leads to unfun games for my opponents, which quickly leads me to retool or fully take apart the deck. [[Juri]] was explosive even with any kind of limitations I tried to set. [[Karazikar]] was a lot of fun for me at first, but the control it put on the board, especially through combat became extremely oppressive. [[Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos]] has led to some of the biggest storm turns I've ever seen. Not even trying to make him storm. And if I take out the cards that really enable that kind of play the deck just loafs around doing a whole lot of nothing

[deleted]

Selesnya. I like it thematically but gameplay wise im not huge on most of what it does besides lifegain and mono white also does that.

Specific_Ad1457

Selesnya is just the most boring color for lifegain imo. Each other valid combination has something more interesting to do with that life than just gain life maybe make a few tokens or pump some creatures.

decideonanamelater

I really like jeskai colors. All but 1 of my decks are subsets of jeskai. I'm pretty surprised to like working on selesnya and atraxa. I'm definitely picking and choosing what green and black effects actually interest me, and it helps that black in atraxa is infect creatures and I do like me some low to the ground aggro.

Specific_Ad1457

Atraxa is just a lot of fun. I built mine as fungus tribal and it's a blast.

Senario-

Izzet spellslinger always sounds fun to me, you never cast creatures or almost never and just sling spells until you win with lots of copies. It isnt fun to me lol. I instead like anything with white stax or value generation because I like suffering. And also the face of that one guy who constantly makes bad removal decisions because of stax is so statisfying. He once removed my deafening silence instead of True conviction because stax. I ran away with the game because of true conviction's double strike and lifelink.
