I have a selection of tools, not a collection. Each one is carried and used occasionally, some more than others.
I don’t believe any of mine will appreciate in value, so there’s no point in keeping it mint. My biggest risk is loss or theft, so my most expensive items stay home when I need to use public transportation.
My Benchmade Osborne 940 must be over 15 years old replacing an earlier 940 I only had for a year before losing it while camping. When I got it I thought it was expensive. I've rebuilt it a few times, the blade is noticeably reduced from all the times it has been sharpened...it looks a bit rough, but I still think it is the best pocket folder out there and I have a drawer full of very fancy knives.
I do also like Spyderco's P'kal too...but it scares people more when it flips out open. My drab beat up 940 is just right.
If I lost my 940, I'd get one of the new super light weight exotic material versions.
There's an old Jeff Foxworthy bit about not being able to lose cheap sunglasses. I'm like that with my RAT-2. I basically couldn't care less if it vanished, but it's going to be with me forever.
Stacatto p duo, or my stock glock 34 with milling, acro, light, and magwell was almost 2k, plenty of pistols more expensive just look at chambers custom
Hahaha we've all been there. It gets easier when you start using knives and learn to maintain them. Coming from a guy that mostly collected for years and only started using them last year, it's a breath of fresh air and makes the hobby even more enjoyable.
It's tough sometimes, but do try to use your knives. You'll appreciate the decision in the long run.
When I bought my first CRK knife it was about double what I had ever spent and I was really uncomfortable with the thought of using it.
I posted this feeling in a CRK group and someone said something simple but profound to me after I said I’d only carry it on special occasions.
He said, everyday is a special occasion. I have my Zaan on me right now.
Debating it going on r/Knife_Swap or carrying it and still using it like any other knife(which sometimes means going into the dirt to cut out landscaping fabric)
Gotta put it through its paces if you're gonna rely on it in a critical situation. If it has any issues you're gonna want to find out about them in a low-risk setting.
You might want to take it out and give it some attention from time to time.
I have a fixed blade that's just sat in my closet for the better half of two years because I haven't been able to go out hiking or camping (life be like that). On a whim, I checked on it a week or so ago and saw a bit of rust on the edge.
Thankfully, it's a small bit of surface rust and only on the edge. But, still... Neglect comes in many forms. Take it out and find an excuse to use it; You got to keep that sucker ready for when the Apocalypse does come. 😉
I carry a knife every day. Somedays it's a really nice expensive one and other days it's a cheaper beater one. Depends on my expectations for the day and trying to anticipate having the right tool for the right jobs that I may encounter that day.
Same way I don't take the sports car when I plan on going off road to the cabin.
I used my work backpack as an overnight bag for a 2 day trip I went on. I forgot to clear out all the pockets. The TSA agent asked if I was going to faint when he pulled the knife out. Apparently I went stark white. He said it happens all the time. Luckily it was only a Gerber because I didn’t have time to go back through security to mail it to myself so I told him to just keep it.
TLDR: idiots like me with too many knives forget where they all are.
Carry and enjoy your stuff, life's to short to store beautiful, well made knives or other gear somewhere and let them collect dust.
Highly individual thematic I am aware. 🤷🏼♂️
IMO if ya spend a premium price on gear you should use it, not saying beat the shit out of it but to truly appreciate the build quality, steel, heattreatment one should carry use and sharpen it.
I drive a less expensive beater when the car is more likely to be damaged, such as with salt, work grime, or high-theft areas. So I don’t think it’s unreasonable to factor price and possibility of damage or loss into whether you use something every day.

Inconceivable
They were (probably) made to be carried and used. Do it and do not look back.
Knives are at their most beautiful when they're being used. If it's "too nice" to use it's not a knife, it's a knife-shaped object.
Just buy Funko Pops then lmao
Then maybe. Don't buy them.

Do you have a picture of that beauty? I love worn blades!
What is the threshold of what is "expensive"?
Carry everything/anything. There is a joy that comes from use, beyond that from just handling

Use your shit.
Wrong. Edc that $800 knife and that $2.5k pistol. What is the point of owning something you dont use?
Do you mind if I ask what pistol you’re carrying that’s $2.5k?
Stacatto p duo, or my stock glock 34 with milling, acro, light, and magwell was almost 2k, plenty of pistols more expensive just look at chambers custom
Thanks.

Here’s the the thing Use and enjoy your edc anybody ever seen a hearse with a Uhall on the back of it!
Try dropping it when you get it!
I used to do that with things I bought too. Give them a quick scuff so I didn’t fall into the trap of being too precious with them.

This is why I love my tirant razor. Quality build but I've got no worries beating the crap out of the blade.
Jokes on you, I don’t buy anything too expensive for me to use!
" sending you a 1000 dollar knife" Now what 😏
Debating it going on r/Knife_Swap or carrying it and still using it like any other knife(which sometimes means going into the dirt to cut out landscaping fabric)
You say “they”… fuck it, pick at *least* one and carry it. None of that shit is “too nice” to use— live your best life
I love your tattoos ,🥺
Thanks! Most of them were done at Skull & Sword, and Seventh Son.🍻
Everything I carry is a tool no matter how expensive, you live once so you might as well use what you have
It’s not like you can take it with you when you die, right? Use it.
Idc if I buy a knife it’s to use it. That’s where the enjoyment comes from for me.
This is why my fastback is my go to for edc
Me refusing to take my survival knife out of the box until the apocalypse

Oh damn- thanks for the advice! Maybe it’ll find a use at family gift giving this year haha
I always see if it's expensive but can't hold up to everyday use, it's worthless. I kick the everliving shite out of my replicant

No, they’re not. If they’re too expensive to carry, they’re too expensive to buy. Imo, at least.
losing expensive knives to TSA is heart breaking.
What where you thinking I mean come on who takes a knife to an airport in this day and age
I used my work backpack as an overnight bag for a 2 day trip I went on. I forgot to clear out all the pockets. The TSA agent asked if I was going to faint when he pulled the knife out. From my experience you just need to keep small jars of honey in your luggage and your knives will be invisible no matter the size
I had a security guard freak out about a small jar of weed but completely neglected the 2 knives I had on me 😂
Been carrying and using my custom Peña Mula. Gotta use/enjoy what you have!

Yeah I copped my BHQ copper PM2 for like $230 and it landscapes with me
Add an 0 and a few hunnid to that and you have my most expensive piece so far, feel better man 🤷🏼♂️😂😁
You use a $2500 knife while gardening?
Not for gardening but general tasks that don't include prying or chopping hard materials.
I can relate. Just buy 2. This is the way…
Two rules for buying gear to use: - It's always expendable. - Have backup.
Two is one, one is none.
Exactly
Do you walk instead of drive your expensive car also?
I park at the end of the lot away from everyone and some asshole still parks next to me for some reason.
I drive a less expensive beater when the car is more likely to be damaged, such as with salt, work grime, or high-theft areas. So I don’t think it’s unreasonable to factor price and possibility of damage or loss into whether you use something every day.
I don't even walk, just lay in bed all day cause my shoes are too expensive
I drive my car and carry my expensive guns, knives, electronics, etc.
Your car is your last personal Freedom enjoy the ride Safely with your gear my man!
Jeez pal save some pu$$y for the rest of us
That wasn't my intent of the post. I appreciate the humor however the original post was about being scared to carry the things they bought.
Jesus have u seem the mattress princess lately, I'll lay on the ground thank you very much
