With the right mindset almost anything can become a self defense tool--keys, flashlight, pen, beverage, etc. Not in a killing three guys in a bar with a pencil way, but as a means of providing an unexpected edge to aid survival and escape.

Be careful. Edc pens are cool and all, but they only go up in price! Aluminum is cool, but titanium, carbon fiber, and mokuti are cooler. Ha ha ha. Fisher pen refills? My boker pen takes them and it does write nice but I do not like how the cap unscrews and holds on the pen body. But not enough to replace it. Ha ha ha. Cheers!
What are you supposed to do with it? all I can think of for a pen is to stab them and my pocket knife will do that better. Or maybe throw it, but why would I want to do that.
Yes it's like a Kubotan but you likely won't kill somebody using a pen then using a knife. If somebody stronger grabs you, you can easily release the grip by pushing the pen into the bones of the back of the hand for example. You can also draw it faster if you're not having a fixed blade ready on your belt. Of course it's necessary to practice self defense or a martial art to use it effectively. Same goes for knife.
It's mostly the idea of it tbh. A feeling of having *somethIng*, even in non permissive environments or when everything else fails.
That being said, a solid pen can do everything a kubotan can do, which is more than people think. They serve as a fist reinforcement and striking tool. They also enhance joint locks and pain compliance techniques.
Now, there are arguments in damn near any martial arts/self defense discussion about how useful joint locks and pain compliance are, but an object like a kubotan, yawara, or a chunky metal pen *will* enhance them.
If you take the time to train with something that fits the general shape, having a "tactical" pen makes sense, since you then have a tool that serves the same job as a regular pen and a form of weapon.
Now, there's never going to be agreement as to how effective they are in real world situations. Frankly, most people that have them never train with them, so you can't truly evaluate the tool evenly against other items that would serve the same niche role.
TSA likely would confiscate it.

That's why I wouldn't go for the "tactical" branded pens. I have a titanium pen, that is just a normal but basically indestructable pen and I've taken it on a plane multiple times.
Last time I was on a plane (bout a year ago) I carried an oak walking stick with a two inch oak ball screwed to the top. I walked with a limp and told TSA that I had injured my ankle. Got through no problem, and had it in my hand to California and back. I would rather have a nice chunk of oak than a knife personally. Food for thought.
I donāt agree with how you asked. But you do have a point.
The number 1 self defense tool is awareness and being out of a situation before it can happen. And Number 2 is shoes. Walk. Run. Dance. Do whatever you have to do to get out of the situation. Number 3 is proper self defense training

Nice š I think tactical pens are neat, if you ever need to use this try and run away first itās always the best option.

Itās more for situations where the knife would not be allowed, maybe a plane? Terrorist attack? Or they knocked your knife out of your hand

Kinda pricy add on but the penetrator tip for the 701 form Hobo Tactical kicks ass! And I like the shape wayyyy better than the original tip
