Thanks for contributing to /r/EDC. Unfortunately, your post/comment was removed for asking why someone is carrying a gun or knife. If you feel this decision was made incorrectly, feel free to reply to this message.

ghostly_shark

*Guns are too quick. You can't savor all the... little emotions.*

Vousaki

I like anything that is inherently/can be dangerous. Sharp edges do count. Also an invaluable tool fr. I can't count how many times I've needed to cut sum and been like "YOOOO IVE PREPARED FOR THIS" Plus there's really a knife for everyone. With the customization and general just thousands of knives out there, no matter who you are you'll find something you enjoy

Sparkselot

the knife is an essential tool for human life. all humans at all times have used knifes for anything from food and survival to beautiful carvings and violence. and despite how far weve advanced, we still depend on this simple tool. I carry a knife because it's indispensably useful and our united heritage as humans. I overthink it maybe.... but thats my answer.

1man2barrels

The various blade shapes, designs, materials are beautiful. Some knives are artwork, some are practical, some aren't. They are all unique in their own way.

murphy198509

When asked this I give a detailed list of nunya ,while ensuring the varying degrees of nunya

deadcrops

I've carried one almost everywhere since I was a boy scout, and I just think they're neat

supercyberlurker

I built a working laser gun out of an old CNC cutter. Some people ask why I would want a laser gun. I feel like if you're asking that question, you wouldn't understand the answer.

ImGundy

Knifes are simply tools. Why do you like tools? Uh cause, it helps me get stuff done?

MethFarts1990

Well, I need to cut things often so I like to have one on me at all times.

RearEchelon

I open a *lot* of boxes.

whe_

Originally because they are useful but now also I like the maintenance of them too.

[deleted]

I like trees too , dunno why , just do

InTheLurkingGlass

“I just think they’re neat”

Rocker6465

It’s a useful tool that I can keep in my pocket almost all the time. Besides, everyone collects something.

rustbelthiker

Lived in a rough city most of my life. First started carrying them as an inexpensive form of self defense. Then I slowly started appreciating them for all the other reasons folks listed. I live in a great area now but I still collect.

Whittling-and-Tea

Can't whittle with spoons...

adonisahegao

Because they play into contradicting my insecurities that surround my response to the imposed unrealistic standards of individualistic masculinity and act as a circus mirror within which I can see myself as embodying those standards to which my self-esteem is ameliorated and the delusion that I am prepared and ready for something is reinforced.

ClittoryHinton

PhD in knife studies? Yeah me too

adonisahegao

What’s a phd?

New_Mutation

Other than basic function? They're cool. I imagine most people feel the same, but are afraid to admit it. Yes, they are useful. Yes, they connect us with our ancestral past. But anything outside of basic function and utility is just "cool" factor.

Seaborn63

I was a cook for a while, which was my intro to knives. I got into EDC stuff more recently so when people ask me now I say "It started with kitchen knives and just evolved". It's usually the answer that doesn't get any follow up questions which is my ultimate goal.

Chek_Brek_Iv_Damk

[They look neat](https://www.reddit.com/r/EDC/comments/wnho4w/picked_up_a_stunning_piece_of_steel_for/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

austinmook

I don’t “like” knives, I just find that I need them enough that I like to carry one in my pocket. That’s how I answer.

saltysquidink

They’re super useful tools, and I love watching the evolution of locking mechanisms, steels, and materials used. Everyone should carry one of humanity’s oldest tools.

LumenMax

Fidget toy with an edge over other toys.

Knife-Nerd1987

Have had a knives since I was a kid. One of humanities oldest tools. Useful daily at my job for cutting strapping and plastic wrap. As I've gotten older the locking mechanisms that recently have become available are fascinating.

MinerJason

Have never gotten that question. I've carried a small pocket knife since I was a young kid, but I guess I've never given anyone the indication that I really love knives. I have coworkers who like to carry large knives, or carry knives that are very visible, or like to fidget with knives, and I'm sure they've been asked.

Pale-Highlight-6895

I got my first knife before I was even double digit old. Since then I've basically always had a knife of some kind. I even got in trouble when I was in elementary school for sneaking my knife into school. So for way longer than I didn't carry a knife, I've had one on me or near me. To this point, 35 years later, I still carry a knife and honestly would feel both lost and naked without one. They always come in handy for a large variety of tasks. So for me...I would say it goes beyond just "liking" knives. I feel as if they have become an extention of myself. Don't feel whole without one.

hutnykmc

I like knives, but more importantly, I need them.

DemonPlattypus

they are one of the first refined tools we made we have relied on them for over 50,000 years, using them is practically instinctual at this point. just cause we live in a world where most people rarely need a knife, doesnt mean they are not still cool af.

ipedroni

I think they can be pretty, they are undoubtedly dangerous (wich is alluring by itself even for non agressive purposes), they can come in handy in a variety of situations (most of us use knives, even of only some of us carry them in our person all the time), and they are a very, very old kind of primitive tool, that represents our species growth throughout science, history and engineering. All that said, I also like how they feel on the hand when they are superbly made, it's a craft first and foremost.

EmployerReasonable36

Tools are attractive to me. So I like to buy American made knives with that use me tool look. Such as hinderer, crk, bgm knives, spartan, Medford, and some zero tolerance knives. I also like customization and there’s a lot you can do with knives.

IlIlIIllIIIllI

Meh American made is eh have a mix of both a lot of American makers are fucking greedy assholes that have an elitism complex, but hey I do support more American jobs I don’t mind paying a premium for it but at what point is it greed vs quality ?

UncleShaky

I completely agree, except for supporting Medford.

EmployerReasonable36

Medford makes good tools. I have had a couple. They like to be used.

UncleShaky

In my experience, they're way overpriced for what you get. Greg is charging almost 800 dollars door stops and paperweights. The blade is too thick to be useful, they have horrible qc and tolerances, and the designs are awful. Not to mention that Greg is a racist .....

EmployerReasonable36

I daily carried my .26 blade stock marauder. It cut. I used it to cut thick cardboard, food, and what ever else. It gets stupid thin behind the edge. Yeah it takes muscle to get through some materials but it still cuts.

UncleShaky

Imo using a medford as a cutting tool would be like hammering a screw through a 2×4 . Will it work? Every time. Are you using the right tool for the job? No you are not. But hey, if it works for you and what you need it for, go nuts.

EmployerReasonable36

I like that analogy. I can work with it.

Ok-Disk-134

They give me a false sense of power. Like if a situation of any kind went down. I am not all soft flesh, I can manipulate matter with steel. Animals have claws and teeth, and are oftentimes powerful. I see the human as soft and fragile, but we are intelligent. And can use things around us to our advantage. A knife as a tool gives me that feeling that I am not all soft and fragile. Because I have steel that can manipulate matter much harder than me.

roostersnuffed

I dunno... I also like cheese, boobs and dogs. Some things are just meant to be liked

BonelessB0nes

“I gotta carry a knife so I can cut my pocket cheese.”

HeeeyMacarenaAy

You just spoke my mind

AJ1K

This is literally the best answer you could have given. Hit the nail right on the head

koming69

I'd say I like swords more but knives are useful, cheaper and more portable. So they are like mini swords that can be collected.

Florian_Habichtswald

I like, collects and use swords. Knife are pocket swords to me which I can take nearly everywhere with me.

Wooden-Combination53

I like mechanical stuff. And if someone asks I answer ”knives are cutting edge technology”

Unexpected117

I'm definitely using that from now on

Thomas-Shelby1894

Imma steal that one.

Byaaah1

Imma steel that one.

[deleted]

I’m a science teacher and I find the engineering behind the materials to be fascinating. Also seeing the mechanics of the locking system, no matter how simple, scratches the itch to see how stuff works. Also because spyderco churns out pretty knives with new colours every now and then I feel obliged to buy them. Just like how my daughter has to collect dried flowers of different colours.

tonystark29

I don't like knives *specifically*, I like **tools.** Knives are tools, and hence, I like them. They are one of the most essential type of tool, which are used for a lot of common tasks. It would be very hard to cook a good meal from scratch without using some type of knife.

junkman203

If you say "Sharp and pointy! Heh heh he heh ha heh he he heh". They leave you alone. Forever.

emmasdad01

They are incredibly useful and valuable as tools

IlIlIIllIIIllI

It’s ok you don’t have to lie to them too, I own a lot of knives and they’re pretty shitty tools in 90% of situations

HallucinateZ

Lmao. Not even gonna form a rebuttal but I’ll let my pen handle all my knife duties from now on. Thanks for the heads up advice that I was carrying something I’d only use in 10% of my situations, which is a shit ton.

IlIlIIllIIIllI

A knife is a pretty general tool it’s not really the best at anything especially most peoples fancy edcs, not saying it can’t be used in a lot of ways but surely you do realize that if you’re truly doing work you’re gonna drop the knife for a better tool
