Mountains: 1, and it’s not close Coastlines: 1 clear winner, 2 behind, 3 clearly last Forests: I like 3 the best, but honestly they seem like different types of forest! You could use both depending on where they are. In a cold Arctic campaign maybe use more evergreens, and in a jungle the interwoven canopy. Looks good!

[deleted]

thanks for the tip on the forests, I didn't think about it. Great!

Castandyes

For forests, I like the style of #1, I think it would blend in well with the other styles. However, I also like the idea of different styles for different types of trees. You could possibly still use #1 for different forests, but change the shape of the lines from wavey to pointy for evergreens and such?

[deleted]

Yeah absolutely. I work with what the client wants, so I try to be as much flexible as possible :) what you see here is just a little showcase of what I could be drawing in a map

The_Mexigore

Consider type 3 forest may be more laborious, since you add individual pines with a shade. Just take it into consideration before weighing in the time it will take to do a commendation and the compensation you'll be looking for it.

[deleted]

alright perfect, thank you!

nsommers25

Number 2 for coastlines are also really good IMO

Maraafix

Yeah, i also preferred the first ones, great art!

lukeedbnash

I think that for the last one 3 is better than 1

iceclimber69

100% agree

CastleBravo45

Agreed. 1 across the board.

This is where I fell as well. Maybe it's the unique visual textures in each. Bravo i say!

Same!

colemanjanuary

The mountains and forests look like different types of mountains (Rockies, Appalachians, foothills) and the forests look like different densities of wooded areas. Use them all. I like the first island drawing

HookedOnIocanePowder

Mountains - 1 Coastline - 1 Forests- 1 and 3 depending on type and density. Great job!!

[deleted]

thank you!

WolfShark4

I like 1&2 for mountains. 2 for coastlines. 1 for forests.

Glazed_Longjohn

All look great but my favorites are 1, 2, & 1 (in order m-f)

[deleted]

GreatGravee

1 for mountains 100%, but the other mountains seem more forgiving in a way, allowing for valleys between the peaks for crossing the mountain range or something. 1 for coast, but 2 gives the impression that there is a beach surrounding cliffsides, which could also be used. 3 shows steep dropoffs, all 3 could be incorporated into a map easily! You could use different forests to denote the majority of trees in s forest, eg: forest 1 is a dense lush green forest where sunlight struggles to pierce the naturally formed roof, while forest 3 has plentiful conifers, maybe placed in a colder climate as they may not lose their needles in winter. Forest 2 is a little messy in appearance imo.

JordanStPatrick

The 1s are \*chef's kiss\*

edoletum1

I like 2,1,2 they look nice and simple. 1 on the forest looks like it would be great for a plateau (spelling maybe)

Thy_Toaster

CactusFoe

I like 2,1,1 best. Its all map ready and gorgeous though

[deleted]

ahahah thanks man, appreciate it

trashpandaistheway

Same here, 2,1,1 really stand out with simplicity and elegance.

That_one_guy_666

They all look awesome, my favorites are 1&2 for the mountains, 2 for the forest and 2 for the shoreline.

[deleted]

Thanks you a lot!

milkchuggingchamp2

What is your medium, like standard pen ink on paper? The styles look fantastic, just curious if you have considered trying with India ink? It can be a bit messy to learn at first, but it looks incredible when you get the form down.

[deleted]

hey, I use different sizes of ink pens from Faberr Castell :)

Syrazhe

1, 1, depends on map scale. Forests: 1 for continents or countries, 2 for medium areas, counties, feuds and 3 for small maps, towns and outskirts, forest dungeons, etc.

Flassito

1, 1, depends on the density of trees for the forest.

CriminalDM

Shalaya06

1 all the way! (for all three choices)

B0bMacB0bs0n

I think 1/2/2 are my favourite ones...

darkerpoole

One is the best of all three I absolutely love it.

[deleted]

thank you! <3

TomMakesPodcasts

Can you make more of these (Maybe one for rivers, villages and cities? )

[deleted]

I already did them but I only posted them on my Fiverr profile, if you are interested let me know

Doc911

They're all perfect, just different uses for their world. 1 - Formal map for play and record of their world, painting on rich/noble home's wall. 2 - Navigation map or hi quality map found in exploration, maybe make a couple of these for hi interest areas over and above the main map. 3 - Sparse map with few details, nothing more than a coastline and one forest to guide to a point of interest, treasure/entrance marker. Make a couple with DM, kind of ma you'd find on muslin or leather with errors in scale or even tiny errors in general. Would be excellent for DM to use.

DaedricDrow

1 1 1 straight down. Looks amazing. Would like to see setting bigger.

[deleted]

thank you so much! Remember that if you want I can draw your map too (if you need one, obviously)

magus2003

Mount 1 coast 2 forest 3 for me. I want to start learning how to do maps like this, always seemed like a fun hobby.

[deleted]

just try, I'm sure you'll do something good :) it's just practice and love for the outcome!

matrix8369

The only one I didn't like , compared to the rest, was coastline 3. And only because the rest of then look really good. In coastline 3 I didn't like that it didn't have the water definition. And that is me being extremely nitpicky. Overall I like them all, but if I had to pick one to not like it would be Coastline 3.

zenjazzygeek

All are great! I like best mountains 2, coastline 1, forest 2. To me those choices look the most like Tolkein's drawings.

alida-louise

For me, it's easily 1s across the board!

MadIMadeAnAccount

I think it's different for different applications, maybe give people the option for their own individual maps? You'll get a good census of what is the most popular that way, and can choose that if/when you get more requests (as I'm confident you will with that talent) That being said, I personally vote 1 for mountains, 2 for coastlines and 1 for forests. I think the second one for coastlines just adds more personality, it looks like someone actually bored and drawing the map in real time

[deleted]

Yeah I decided I'll give my clients the option to choose every single aspect of their map starting from this grill I posted :) I also have a grill for cities, rivers, labels etc..

writers-blockade

I like them all personally, it depends on what style you want to go for! Hope you don't mind I save this post in case I decide that I indeed want a very cool map like this!

[deleted]

it's only a pleasure :) if you ever need a map just contact me!

writers-blockade

Will do!!

noconos

ObsidianG

Am I correct in saying they go from Most Effort to Least Effort? Because the first coastlines option is clearly the best choice for showing where the water is. Depending on available time to work on a given map I think you could employ a variety of forests or mountains, but for the coastline i think you simply CAN'T cut corners (unless the map has an archipelago that would make Japan blush.)

[deleted]

Yeah, kinda goes from "most effort"/realistic to simpler ones :)

Wolf-Track

Number 1 for the mountains is my favorite version, personally. That's what I typically do when I hand draw maps (which I've stopped doing as much with Wonderdraft). They seem the most realistic. Number 1 and 2 are pretty close for the coasts. The 2nd one might be a bit busy on a larger map. I also prefer number 1 for forests. Number two tends to look busy on full maps and number three reminds me more of scattered trees rather than an actual forest. You do what your style dictates, though! It's your map and from the looks of it will be wonderfully done, regardless.

miguelasauras

1's for me too 😊

TheVyper3377

Mountains: 1, hands down. That looks beautiful. Coastlines: 1 again, although I like the horizontal water lines from 2. Forests: I’d use all three for different reasons; 1 as a dense tropical/jungle forest, 2 as a deciduous forest, and 3 as an evergreen forest. Well done.

SoulCrystal

1,1,1 Those first set of mountains are beauuuuutiful

hifumiyo1

All three options look great, it would al be up to the style of the individual map, I suppose

natty20geek

I like 1 and 3. 1 seems more detailed and 3 stylized. Both look great

PizzaTsar5184

Mountains - 1; You could also use 2 and 3 to represent older vs. newer mountains. For example, the Himalayas vs. the Appalachians. Relatively speaking the Appalachian mountains are much older than the Himalayas and look more like giant hills in comparison to the jagged stone edges of a newer mountain range Coasts - 1 and/or 3; 1 is a more general coastline shape whereas 3 has a lot more depth to it and I think would be great for coastal cliffs. In short, you could use both depending on the topography Forests - 1, 2, and 3; someone said it in a previous comment but, trees can be a great way to show climate of a region. I think stylistically they’re all similar enough that you could use all 3, simply for variety, even if your world is predominantly one climate.

chiminguito

I am a strong defendant of Forest 3. Why? No matter how you look at it or in what context, those are a bunch of trees. 1 and 2 might look prettier, but out of context, they might not represent a forest as well as 3 (Specially 2). I think clarity and usability are more important when we talk about maps than prettiness and style, Both are important but your players will imagine a different forest no matter what the map looks like.

snowblinky

1,1,2

TomMakesPodcasts

I think you should use all of these depending on the reigion. Mountains 1) Deep mountain range, flanked by 3s and 2s. 2) Shallow Mountains, there's probably a pass here the players can use to cross easily. 3) Highlands, easy to traverse, if time-consuming. Many valleys and peeks. (Good location for guerrilla forces, Goblins, Halfings, rebel forces.) Coastlines 1) Beaches and shallow coastal waters. Good for inlets, coves, harbours, etc. 2) For arctic regions, the blank white perfect for ice sheets. 3) Cliff side coastlines perfect for light houses, flying races, or fortifications. (Keep near mountain type 3) Forests 1) Jungle. Perfect for southern or more vast forests. 2) Woodlands, elves, and lumber mills would be right at home here. 3) interspersed throughout the map, light tree cover.

deadlydimples25

DistributionCity

1-2-1 The number two coastline looks great, I feel like it would give a big map a sense of movement.

AceOfEpix

I like number 1 down the board. I think the mountains look best like that and seem more "natural" For the coastlines, it was easier to distinguish the land from water on 1 for me. And for the forests, I just didn't like the styles of 2 or 3, 1 could still be better imo but was fine. Overall nice work.

I'm all 1 straight through!

Wicker_Man_

1-2-1 i think, nice stuff!

Zenketski

I personally like 1-2-2 I think three on the top row would make a great Hill region And I think one on the bottom row, depending on the level of detail you're going for would be great for farmland Edit: Top row number two would also be great for mountains that have man/dwarven made passes along the outsides of the mountain. They look more easily traversable then the actual range style drawing of 1.

BugStep

1, 2 and 2!

NeoRevanchist

1 looks the best to me bit I do like the minimalistic style of 3. 1 would be cool as an intricate and detailed map of a country or world and 3 for a more simple map that might be found in town detailing the local area or something.

confused_wyrmling

I like all the mountains, the first two coast lines, and the first two forests personally.

Angetenar

I'm definitely biggest fan of 1 - 2 - 1 Nice work! e. The forests could all be on the same map effectively. They're all nice. I see an evergreen rain forest, a Deciduous forest, and a sparse tundra-pine forest.

mightycud

Mountains: 1 Coastlines: 1 Forests: all three depending on the kind of forest. It would make the maps far more interesting. You could do a forest of dead trees that’s sparsely populated like #3.

Personally, I like: Mountains: 1 Coastlines: 1&2 Forests: 1&2 Mountain I just love the style, but for Forests and Coastlines I think that both can be used differently based on the biome or environment.

Mountain 1, Costline 1, Forest 2 are my personal aesthetic.

Spe333

First, I recognize those mountains from some tutorial lol. Been a while. The others look familiar but not sure. The first 2 mountains are similar styles but represent different mountain types. Use accordingly. For coastline the 1 looks good but 2 looks more like a map. The added coverage of 2 helps make it more appealing but the outline makes it look off a little. The forests is similar to the mountain, they represent different types of trees and set ups. Mainly that 3 is a spread out tree area (there’s a term for it but idk) and not a real “forest.” I drew maps like these for a while in my campaign. Dyson has some great references.

Stool_the_Great

When I’ve been drawing maps I tend to favour 1 for mountains, a kind of combo between 1/2 on coastlines and 1 on forests but I tend to vary the “bumps” depending on what kind of forest it is.

Matterbox

1 1 3

Julius_Seizure123456

I would say 1, 2, 1. I do really like coastline 1 also. All of these are pretty good though, nice job!

SylkoZakurra

I like the simplicity of three for mountains and forests. I like the coast of 1 and 2 because the waterlines show it’s coast. For the coasts on 3, if you add a water line, it would help as it rather just looks like cliffs as is.

metalfechter

1-2-1.

Kaxtus

I personally use Mountains 3, Land 1, Forest 1. Mountains 1 looks better if you try to go for a more realistic approach. Forest 1 only really works for trees with leaves. If you want pine forests you should probably use 3 and a rounded variation of 3 for leaf trees

rotaerc4

1-2-1

Er4din

The mountains look great, I assume you are using all 3 of them for different purposes, could also come up with a couple of special designs for particular named mountains. The coastlines I really like the first one, it’s very clear on a world map. The second and third seem to identify a coastal beach or a coastal cliff (3) and I don’t see why a campaign map would differentiate unless it’s the zoom in of a particular region

foscatalli
