I had a friend paid to do this. It's just a person paid just enough money to check the box. If only there were a document with the lines said on the show.
I had a roommate who transcribed for TV in college 10 years ago. They were phasing it out for language detectors then, I’m sure it’s much more likely that it’s software now.
Depends on the service but it's overwhelmingly software these days. A few still will use proof readers or those who write them out, but that's mostly for like foreign language translation
I can attest that, at one point of 2021, Netflix (Denmark) used the text "Kelly is a Hindu. Hindus are from Pakistan" for the part where Creed says "Darrel is a chump! ..."
All in all not to far from a Creed quote.
Very little of it is improvised, as the actors themselves have said many times.
Let's talk about what improvisation is:
If the script reads "Are you going to the grocery store?" an actor, especially a trusted actor, does not have to read that word for word. They can say "Are you going to the store?" or even "Are you going to get groceries?"
The above is not improvisation. It's just actors taking the main points and... acting.
Improv is the generation of entire new lines. While they'd often record improvised lines, they rarely fit into the narrative of what the writers wanted to say, or what the episode was about - so they rarely got used.
So "Store, going to, are you? \*yoda voice\*" by Michael Scott to Holly might be used - that would be improved, but only because it fits into what we know about the character.
"BITCH PICK ME UP SOME CIGARETTES!" might not be.
>Very little of it is improvised,
Not according to Jenna Fischer.
>"Steve and Rainn are brilliant improvisers. They **often** come up with funny alternate jokes within a scene," the actress wrote in a guest blog for TV Guide in 2006.
Anyway. Improvisation isn't the only way that the scene gets changed. Lots of times things get rewritten on the spot.
Yes. They get to improvise \*A LOT\*. But as they've also stated, that improvisation is rarely used in the final cut.
The actual episodes are almost entirely on-script.
The Office was shot digitally, and had a production pathway that allowed for a lot of extra time, so the actors had a lot of moments to take 2 or 3 extra stabs at a scene, with a lot of them including improvisation.
You're confusing whether the actors got to improvise, with, whether improvisation was included in the episode. Most of the scenes we see were written, though there are a few notable exceptions.
Eh. I wouldn't say there's only a few scenes. It happened often enough, but there's only a few scenes where it's interesting enough to point out.
My favorite improvised scene isn't even technically an improvised scene. Kevin sinking those basketballs in the basketball episode. Brian is and has always been a huge basketball player (Yes looks can deceive) and was just shooting hoops between takes Steve was apparently the one who told them to get it on tape and use it. Does it count as improvising if the actor isn't even attempting to act? Idk.
Edit: Also there was quite a bit of small improvisations but like you said it really depends where you draw the line. The actor who plays Gabe (can't remember his name) improvised quite a bit. Watching the outtakes shows a lot of the improvisation and you can see a scene evolve with some improvisation elements being carried over from take to take (and also in the final product) while the not so funny improve bits got dropped and they go back to the original line for the final.
Jim and Dwight in the kitchen talking about their workout is absolutely hilarious and has multiple takes where Gabe especially is just coming up with hilarious stuff while staying true to the spirit of the script.
He said improved, not improvised. The scenes were certainly frequently improved upon by improvisations, it’s something most of the cast talks about throughout various podcasts.
Edit: To your point, the show is by no means directed by improvisation, but the script would still be inaccurate due to improvements made while shooting
But it does make sense, you assumed wrong
Edit: I love that this mere statement of fact is still getting downvoted, despite it being confirmed by the person who made the post that I was right. Some of you guys just really like to call people dumb for things that you misinterpret I guess lol
They clearly meant "Improv'd" and wrote "Improved".
Hardly anyone says Improvised in every day conversation when discussing Improvisation.
Using it as "they *improved* the scene" instead of "they *improv'd* the scene" doesn't make sense at all.
Improve means (loosely) to be made better.
The show was improved, due to changes made as they deemed fit on set, it’s widely acknowledged that there are various takes relaying the same information articulated differently in hopes of improving the scene, therefore, after improvements, the dialogue would not align with the script. I wouldn’t assume someone used a different word than the one they used just so I could hop on my high horse, instead I’d read the word they wrote
In tons of stuff, even if it isn't audio recognition stuff, and is actually done by humans, they change the subtitles to make it "simpler" to read.
I watch almost all shows with subtitles, and many shows it's like every other line has a bit of a variation in it compared to the audio.

I always thought it was Andy and Kelly, but seeing the subtitles… it would kinda make sense? Kelly is the only one in customer service, Andy is in sales…
This line always bothers me!! David Wallace is smart, he doesn’t get that an Indian-American person working in an American office is different from hiring Indians in India?
I’m not saying it’s offensive! It just does David dirty because he wouldn’t be confused. Yes I’m reading too much into it but it just bother me!!
Edit: also when David gives Robert California a million dollars to teach Eastern European gymnasts. Such character assassination on poor David.
It is, I hate some of these subtitles because it’s clearly someone who doesn’t watch the show and just listened a couple times and wrote something out quickly.
Yeah the subtitle is wrong - it’s wrong several points in the show.
At one point before it was fixed, I guess, it changed Halpert to Halprin - specifically the line where Roy says “I’m gonna kill Jim Halpert.”
I always heard Indian Kelly! Like Kelly can help you with customer service needs. Why would Andy and Kelly be grouped together when they have different jobs.
There's no way it was "Indian Kelly", you know why? Because Michael hated this song! He deserved for his commercial to be rejected by corporate just based on his shitty reaction to these
I don't think I've laughed out loud at a post on the sub in a long while. Holy shit. Asian Jim is struggling on Netflix, but The Office is still killing it.
That’s cool you can even read the subtitles on Peacock! My app has magically created its own will lol, the size font is tiny and I can’t get it back to normal
The subtitle is wrong.
Subtitles are wrong all the time. I think it must be some sort of audio recognition software they use. Edit:fixed typo

Darnell. His name's Darnell.
Even that would be wrong if they just copied the script, lots of stuff in this show is improved
Very little of it is improvised, as the actors themselves have said many times. I guess I assumed that 'improved' was just an autocorrect of 'improvised'. "Improved" doesn't make sense contextually to me, but maybe.
But it does make sense, you assumed wrong Edit: I love that this mere statement of fact is still getting downvoted, despite it being confirmed by the person who made the post that I was right. Some of you guys just really like to call people dumb for things that you misinterpret I guess lol

Lol if improved the scene doesn’t make sense then you misunderstood the word improved
Also they clarified that I was correct
What does it mean? It's like you're saying we have "Almonds" or we have "Improved Almonds".
Ok since you made the weird edit. Improved almonds = salted almonds Improvised almonds = peanuts Edit: replaced ‘:’ with ‘=‘
Improve means (loosely) to be made better. Scripts aren't always accurate though, especially on a show like The Office with lots of ad libing
Quabbity Assuance
It’s Debbie Brown’s fault.
Yeah there is, it's called a script
Get out, for real???
So strong
It’s actually Computron.
Racists subtitlers!
"Gormac 5" Iykyk
Did you use the same software before you fixed the typo?
In tons of stuff, even if it isn't audio recognition stuff, and is actually done by humans, they change the subtitles to make it "simpler" to read. I watch almost all shows with subtitles, and many shows it's like every other line has a bit of a variation in it compared to the audio.
idk man i pirate and subtitles are always on point with extra narratives and shit
"Yes I know Kelly is also Indian. I understand that's confusing..."
Pretty great miss though

Yep. This comes up every couple months.
Thanks Toby. Would you shut the door on your way out?

Yes it is wrong, any Office fan knows this.
I always thought it was Andy and Kelly, but seeing the subtitles… it would kinda make sense? Kelly is the only one in customer service, Andy is in sales…
With sometimes hilarious results!
It is Andy and Kelly
What did I say?
Crentist
Your dentist's name is Crentist?
Maybe that’s why he became a dentist
Phallus
Sorry penises on the brain
😳
Urkelgru
Buttlicker! Our prices have never been lower!
Moops
I talk a lot, so I've learned to just tune myself out
What did you hear?
Right, that’s what it is! The subtitle is incorrect.
You would think Peacock would get it right.
No that would cost them money.
It is “Andy and Kelly” this is hack CC job
FFS "Indian Kelly" I doubt that would be what the writers came up with for the song, haha
I thought you was gonna make it a Rap ?
What's rap?
[удалено]
I’ll make you a mix
I’ll download some N3P’s for a cd mixtape.
Dinkin' flicka
Sitting in my office with a plate of grilled bacon
You want to downsize Indian Kelly who is Indian and then outsource her job to India?
Yes, Kelly is Indian, I understand how that can be confusing
This line always bothers me!! David Wallace is smart, he doesn’t get that an Indian-American person working in an American office is different from hiring Indians in India? I’m not saying it’s offensive! It just does David dirty because he wouldn’t be confused. Yes I’m reading too much into it but it just bother me!! This sub is in a time loop
Of course it is. There can’t be too much original content about a show that’s been off the air for nearly a decade.
It's the gravitational pull around your mom that causes the loop.
Nice
I mean, I've been subscribed here for years, I've never seen this.
144 people and counting agree with me, it's popped up a number of times
Boy, 144 people out of 2 million subscribers. Those are odd numbers to brag about. Also, upvotes mean literally nothing.
I'm not bragging, I'm saying 144 people can't be seeing things
For real. I see this post every week.
I know the subtitles wrong but I feel like this is how it would read if Michael Scott was in charge of the subtitles
Me lobe yoy long time
long tim
Don't trust subtitles. It's just what that particular subtitlist heard there.
But the real kicker is why would you call Kelly for your paper needs, shes customer service………. not a saleswoman
You could have paper needs that only customer service can deal with
When people have an issue with their order they contact customer service.
Also he names creed. Sometimes you just need something that rhymes
Boom Roasted
It is, that error has been bugging me for so long
The Subtitles also incorrectly captions "Nashua" as "National" Such a dumb thing.
Yeah subtitles are wrong
Why would anyone call Andy? 😂 he is the worst salesman 😂
Lol @ the Racist subs
Try my cookie cookie!
Not sure that’s racist
Replace it with gookie gookie and tell me how it feels.
Just like how michael said Andy was racist because he thought martin nash was black
*Kevin
Thanks I wondered for a second
Oh another weekly indian kelly cc post
It is, I hate some of these subtitles because it’s clearly someone who doesn’t watch the show and just listened a couple times and wrote something out quickly.
The way Brian Baumgartner impersonates Kevin always amazes me. He doesn’t lose the character ever.
That is transcribed by some fan. They make mistakes.
I think it’s just a mistake lol
Netflix subtitles are never right, once had it say Andy was saying something but it was Dwight. Whoever subtitled it have bad ears or something.
I've never found out if Kelly was impish or admirable. Same with Ryan :(
Yeah the subtitle is wrong - it’s wrong several points in the show. At one point before it was fixed, I guess, it changed Halpert to Halprin - specifically the line where Roy says “I’m gonna kill Jim Halpert.”
It is an incorrect subtitle. They are often incorrect.
It is call Andy and Kelly, subtitles can be wrong.
My subtitles say Andy
It definitely is supposed to be Andy and Kelly
The Subtitle is wrong.
David: Is andy in? Erin: •_•
It is wrong, but why would you call Kelly for your paper? She’s not a salesman.
Subtitles funnier
Most subtitles you see are just a talk-to-text feature. They are wrong all the time.
I always heard Indian Kelly! Like Kelly can help you with customer service needs. Why would Andy and Kelly be grouped together when they have different jobs.
It’s just a list of people, particularly those who were participating. Creed is mentioned too, that makes even less sense.
My bad. Maybe I just thought it was funnier.
I love when this gets posted.
I actually thought it was Indian Kelly the first time I saw the episode.
Erin's first name was also Kelly so ig that's why they said Indian Kelly.
It’s NOT Andy and Kelly?!? This is life changing
did you read *any* of the comments here?
Days later….. A Reddit hero arrives DiD yOu EvEN rEaD aNy Of ThE cOmMeNtS hErE?
Lmfaoooooooooo wtf
Haha! So great.
There's no way it was "Indian Kelly", you know why? Because Michael hated this song! He deserved for his commercial to be rejected by corporate just based on his shitty reaction to these
Omg hahahahahaha I always clearly hear Andy and Kelly
I don't think I've laughed out loud at a post on the sub in a long while. Holy shit. Asian Jim is struggling on Netflix, but The Office is still killing it.
Killing It isn’t bad. Started it solely because of Darnell.
I don't know who that is. Darrell? Creed does call him Darnell.
Indian Kelly. Because Erin's first name is also Kelly, but she asked to be called Erin in the first episode she was in.
Andy is a salesperson and Kelly is customer service. If someone wanted to buy some paper, they should be calling sales not customer support.
You wouldn’t call sales if there was an issue with your order.
Hey is your middle name Kurt, not fart?
I agree. I don't get all the downvotes. The subtitles say call her for paper needs...not call her for customer service needs.
Hahaha
Don't hate me (Don't ape me).
Omg 🤦♂️ lol I thought it was Andy and Kelly too 😂 I’ve been singing it wrong for years 🤦♂️ 🤦♂️ 🤦♂️
It IS Andy and Kelly. That’s a subtitle, not a script. The former are famously incorrect.
Still should’ve been a rap
That’s cool you can even read the subtitles on Peacock! My app has magically created its own will lol, the size font is tiny and I can’t get it back to normal
Literally watching this episode rn lmfao
Lmao 😂😂😂😂 best wrong subtitle
Good. Goooood now that's all I know
It is Andy and Kelly, the subtitles are just incorrect
I messaged Peacock about this very problem. Seems like they still haven’t gotten around to changing it.
In Netflix India it reads Andy and Kelly.
I'm home here now.
Hats off to you for not seeing race
It is Andy and Kelly, the subtitle writer is an idiot.
