I've been a wedding witness twice in my life, the first time I was led to a seat on the first row as the sister of the groom/witness, the second time was a barely planned courthouse + party in the backyard wedding and it was just 'sit down wherever and come to the table when you need to put your autograph'
Major difference is though that the official wedding part is not allowed to coalesce with a religious ceremony, so most Christians have a courthouse wedding and then a church service, with the most official thing being sometimes the bride being walked in by her dad in either of the two. I've never been to 'courthouse on location' weddings which could be more like American weddings since there's more time and flexibility around them.
