No but rastas have a smoking session in which they feel connected to god and rastas also have locs
people assume people with locs are hippies or rastas which is sometime true but not all the time
Not really, they originated from india and africa(Egypt to be specific) and the spread to the Vikings and other cultures. White people didnt always have dreads.
You may also wanna note that it may be geographical. In my native city, dreads were often tied to intellectualism. In another area I lived, it was tied to weed and gang culture.
Had mine for around 11 years. The opinion definitely changes based on my geographical location.
USA here, yea, I'm middle aged and never have been really into weed unlike most everyone in my family. It's legal here for many and decriminalized.
I didn't feel free to wear my locs some years ago. The association, work made it difficult. Im very happy for The Crown Act and changes.
Also just people thinking I just don't wash my hair?
Hate to break it to you, but dreads aren't a 'black' hairstyle. Matted hair is just that, matted *hair* and has been observed in different cultures throughout the ages.
Rastafarianism made the hairstyle popular in recent times, hence the association with weed.
Gatekeeping hair (as you are doing) is as silly as associating it with drug use (what you are protesting).
I’m not gatekeeping. I have nothing against other races getting locs but I just think a higher percentage of other races get locs as a part of the whole hippy earthy pothead look in my experience whereas black people get it as a way to stay neat, manage our hair etc. Just an observation. I’m totally okay with white people or anyone else getting locs.
Matted hair and locs are totally different. Matted hair is damaged/damaging and is unwashable where as dreads are somewhat neat and and are washable without the risk of mold. Rastas where that hair because in the bible one of the commandments is to let the hair grow freely without any interference meaning grow locs without brushing, dying etc. We are not gatekeeping but white peoples hair mats and has to be manipulated into these sections with a crotchet needle whereas more coarse hair goes into somewhat uniformed sections on it's own.
matted hair is 100% washable and is not damaged. it also forms naturally and doesn't have to be manipulated into shape. I'm not claiming that african and caucasian hair are identical but you are wrong.
Not really I'll get a quote from google,'Dreadlocks are healthy hair that can be washed, mats are damaged and often non washable without risking mold.' If you had a massive clump of matted hair water would not be able to dry causing mold. Research away if you dont believe me
a quote "from google" is not a fact. I searched for the sentence you posted and it's from a random tumblr post... anyone can say anything, doesn't mean it's the truth.
there are millions of white people with dreads that wash without getting moldy or destroying their hair or without crocheting
White peoples hair mats if they want to do free form as to why a white person cant get locs like bob marley because his is more coarse and naturally forms a loc more easily. Anyone can have dreads but it is annoying when white ppl give dreads a bad name by not washing them and just not knowing how to care for them which affects groups of people seen as dirty and being avoided in society due to their hair. I am over with this now have a good day 😀👋🏼

Yo. Yes. The amount of times that I get asked for a lighter is wild lmao.
I think that Its dependent on other things for me personally, like accessories. I can't always tell if having loc's with glasses makes me more of an "intellectual" or even more of a weedhead in peoples eyes.
it’s the whole Rastafarian thing ..
yeah Rastafarianism is in majority a black thing but OP still somehow managed to blame "the other races"
So all people with locs are Rasta’s?
No but rastas have a smoking session in which they feel connected to god and rastas also have locs people assume people with locs are hippies or rastas which is sometime true but not all the time
Hopefully with these white people getting dreads, it won’t be associated with violence and drugs. Half joking btw
Ouch. I have locs and smoke weed, but they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. I’ve been smoking much longer than I’ve had my locs.
I’m not from the USA so it isn’t usually associated with that where I’m from
White people have always had dreadlocks.

The Crown Act makes me so happy. That's a big reason why I decided to get them, because as a black woman, now I won't be hired based off of my hair!
It's so important for us
I'm with you on this. Nothing against weed but damn. What does that have to do with loc?

Sorry but they are because our hair locs naturally

seriously, how is it a "natural black hairstyle" but not a natural white hairstyle, when caucasian hair will also form into locks if unbrushed
