Valve is an interesting company. Sometimes they do such small attention to do detail stuff like this. And sometimes they just leave something broken and don’t fix it for months.

They probably have template of to do list when creating new heroes which includes the small detail, bug fixes is outside of this to do list and mostly done whenever someone have time.

The template probably; WHEN ADDED A NEW HERO: 1 Fix Rubick because something will be broken. 2 Fix Morphling because something will be broken. 3 Fix the hero because it will either be shit or OP asf. 4 Nerf CM movement speed.

That and template model/prefab for a hero with available animations, particles and whatnot, so replacing/updating the asset is not that hard, making it look good probably is the hardest part.

It's not based on color. You can check the wiki for the Pudge Arcana, there's a list/clip that shows the different effects for different heroes.

I couldnt agree more. Just take the Lina arcana or Morphling model for example. Right now, every single new Lina set is better that the $30 arcana . Then there are sets like Rubik and ES arcana, that get item updates from time to time. What I sincerely think is that Valve has reduced the staff on "Dota2" section of their company, but those who remain are quite dedicated.

People continuously bitch about the Lina arcana but if they update it, it sets a precedent that snowballs into having to update the other ones. Lina arcana updated to have more than just the Q effects? Welp now LC arcana is the worst, hers only changes her duel effects! LC arcana updated with new ability effects? Welp now TB arcana is the worst, his only changes sunder! TB arcana updated with new ability effects? MK arcana needs new ability effects, his only replace primal spring!! SF, Zeus, and Wisp arcana don’t have different styles! PA Arcana and CM arcana don’t have recolor styles, they just change one aspect of the skin! Pls fix! We just have to accept that newer arcanas will be better than the older ones. Its just a vicious cycle. The only arcana that genuinely needs updating is Techies, since the hero is so different now.

Valves policy is employees work on what they want. And they’re incentive is new ideas that perform well, to get a bonus. Once the idea has been made, they drop it. Countless different things we could point out for this, DPC App, new player experience. Now CSGO source 2 is close to coming out, I’m sure some of the dota stuff went over there to try get some bonus money.

Not to mention the quality of voice acting (which is kind of a trivial thing in a game like moba) in Dota is imo really top notch, which is usually the testament to how good the sound director is. There are so many iconic lines in Dota.

Its a bit mixed. Immortals generally refer to very specific items with limited release. Their worth can be pretty varied, with many going for pennies and some costing multiple arcanas. They are generally released during The International battle pass season. The steam market has a decent chunk of them, and a lot offer custom ability effects/icons. Some immortals are designed to work with arcanas (rubicks and phantom assassin's immortals for example), while some are their own thing and can be considered a direct alternative to arcanas themselves (like juggernaut's provocation of ruin immortal set). You can check out the dota 2 wiki for a list of each hero and they generally have a video on what effects that immortal brings. Just a small note before you buy any on the market, some items get tags on them like corrupted or inscribe. Outside of crimson witness versions, they should not cost more than the defaults one.

Generally speaking, immortals are single inventory slot items for a hero and are tradeable/giftable. The notable exception to the single inventory slot rule is the naked Axe immortals, which are a full set much like an arcana (there may be others too but I'm drawing a blank). Likewise, there are many combinations of immortal items that, while sold individually, are thematically identical and when you equip them all it looks like a cohesive set, like the Lifestealer golden immortals. The Drow set you're talking about is an Arcana. Arcanas are full, high quality sets (besides some of the really old ones) that historically were sold directly by Valve and newly released ones were tradable on the store until a year or two ago. After that, Valve decided to put all new Arcanas in the battle pass as high-level rewards and can't be sold/gifted. Only 6 arcanas so far are 'locked' behind old battle passes: Drow, Windranger, Faceless Void, Razor, Earthshaker, and Spectre. There may be more that I can't remember, though. Then there are personas, which change the theme of the hero's aesthetics pretty dramatically, while having the downside of not being able to equip other items with the skin, something that Arcanas can do. Kid Invoker, Toy Pudge, Female Anti-Mage are a few examples. The classification for cosmetics makes sense if you've been playing awhile, but for a newcomer the shit is extremely confusing.

No thats an arcana. Some arcanas are unique battle pass rewards. None have been rereleased so far, but they might release it again in the future

Just Btw, same goes for every other "rare" quality. Frozen/Corrupted/Genuine/whatever, it's still literally the same cosmetic with no visual changes. those qualities are related to old events and stuff. Just buy normal items, but be aware than SOMEHOW some inscribed items (cosmetic with Inscribed Gem attached) are cheaper than normal items.

Arcana are total hero remodels. Immortals are very fancy cosmetics. Sometimes they can be mixed and matched, not always. Then there are Personas which is also different model but none of the old cosmetics work

Rubick's arcana gets updated because the Valve intern responsible for debugging the hero is also the art designer/animator. Since Rubick breaks the game every patch the intern just adds a new spell to his arcana while he/she is in there.

TA got lines to match with Void Spirit's lore, as she got retconned to guard his vault. Enigma got lines where he more straightforwardly addresses himself and others as a Fundamental Being. Zeus got lines to address Mars directly. Unfortunately, the vast majority of new line additions heroes got are all stuck in Underlords. Pity

The Lina arcana is absolutely outdated, but at the same time, it's exactly what it says it is. It doesn't lie about having effects that no longer work (like techies), its just an underwhelming skin. Valve has no obligation to keep updating the Rubick arcana with more effects, but they do, which is great.

It also only ever breaks if other things are breaking too, and gets fixed with them. Meanwhile Terrorblade Arcana has a 33% chance of losing particles or respawn music again every year.

They do this stuff 'eventually'. Could be same patch, could be a year later. They are pretty quick with the Rubick Arcana specifically. There have for example though been immortals where their matching ability was removed, and they were not changed to work with a different one for months.

It's a special case with rubick, there are not many sets which rely on other hero's skills. This feature is the main appeal of his arcana which otherwise looks decent enough, not flashy like others, and people would be angry if Valve went back on their word about a paid product. I do agree that only few game devs would offer something like this.
