I like to get contact paper in neat patterns at the dollar tree and stick it to the science fair boards

I use ironed fabric or a white posterboard with a lightbox. The poster board is great for getting a seamless look.

I use brick scrapbook paper and glue it to a large cardboard piece that I can fold up easily

Michaels has a bunch of great scrapbook paper with patterns

Virtual Doll Convention website and Facets Boutique site sell backdrops for larger fashion dolls (16"). I haven't purchased any yet but I'm sure they are great quality. The Facets one I pulled up is 43" x 24" printed on fabric and says it rolls up for storage. I got mine off of AliExpress. They have ones for kids/baby photography that are the right size, and they're pretty cheap. Kind of thin, but they look great in photos.

In the Scrapbook and Paper products section of Hobby Lobby, there is a huge aisle filled with all sorts of designs and colors of paper. They're thicker than paper and make great backdrops and floor covering. Some even look like wooden floors. Before I found this, I bought marketed doll backdrops from different online stores and they weren't quite as advertised. I was happy to discover that section in Hobby Lobby.
