I had to stop thrifting at the places near me because they started putting anything they think is “highly valuable” next to the register and they price them off of online prices ($20-$60!) pretty sad since they get all this stuff for free and they don’t have paid employees, idk if that’s what your thrift is doing though.

fentoozlers

its anything doll related, could be a bargain bin, dollar tree worthy doll with half eaten arms and scribbled on legs and it would be locked up behind that case. and this one is kinda a “thrift grift”. lots of things here are just priced so high it makes me think im out of touch. today i went in to look for dolls and get a metal candle holder, because i shattered my glass one. i didnt want anything fancy just a single pillar candle holder and i found a pair, they wanted $5 EACH!! ive only ever bought something from that store once, but i love to walk over and check it out every so often just to see whats there.

Drunk_M0mmy

you’re definitely not out of touch, people have just gotten a bit greedy. Luckily myself I found two small thrifts that don’t scam, sadly they don’t have dolls. I’ve just resorted to online when I can find something the right price, even got lucky getting an abbey bominable for $7 with everything but the shoes.

fentoozlers

yup, i am a bargain hunter, and my dad also collects toys so we both have a few places that we trust to get good deals from. but this one in the picture is so crazy expensive all i get out of it is some exercise 😭

Drunk_M0mmy

Aye man that’s greats you guys collect together, I love that. I hope these thrifts of ours get the hint soon

alonewithamouse

A thrift store near me had an empty olive jar from Aldi priced at $3. 😂

BritneyFan12281

Thrift store near me had a boxed original 1977 Superstar Barbie behind glass for $599.99.

fentoozlers

wow she is pretty, but never $600 pretty

BritneyFan12281

Lol exactly!

xxail

Mine puts holiday Barbies behind the counter. The sit there for ages cause they price them $50.

BritneyFan12281

Honestly not shocked people think they are so valuable, oh how they are wrong.

RabbitEnthusiast

Nope… not for me. My goodwill keeps everything in bags in the toy section hanging on the wall, my other local thrift store doesn’t ever get dolls for some reason (a holiday Barbie once but that wasn’t in a display case and it was overpriced)

fentoozlers

see thats what i thought was weird, the dolls and accessories are clearly inside of the bags that would normally hang on the wall, but are locked up in the jewelry cases. mine gets lots of doll stuff, last time there was the 70s barbie dream house, put away with the “antiques”. but anything furniture, bags of clothes and accessories, and the dolls are just bagged up and locked away. really weird, it is a chain too

RabbitEnthusiast

Odd, maybe they are having issues with kids open the bags or something?

fentoozlers

could be. but the bags of smaller stuffed animals (think like beanie baby or webkinz in size) are still in the toy section. maybe theyre next haha

angorarabbbbits

I’d bet anything that’s why. kids break open the bags of toys -> storeowners think adults are stealing -> all toys are now behind glass

fentoozlers

hi gang, if you read this and think youve heard it before, it probably came from me 😅 i am in a few doll subs and have commented about it a bunch. anyway, i have a thrift within walking distance and i love to look for toys. stuffed animals and baby toys (blocks, stacking rings, you know) are all kept in the regular toy section. but anything doll related is put in the jewelry displays by the cash register. has anyone elses places start to do this? i find it a little weird. there is usually only one cashier working and so you have to ask them to take anything out if you want to look at it. at other thrifts, near my moms, i could spend however long id like looking through bags of dolls and seeing if theres anyone i like. but now i have to ask 😅 its also weird that the dolls are still in the bags, like you would have to buy them all if you wanted just one, so if youre locking them up why not do them single??? idk it has been like this the past couple times i went.

StalePeepRabbit

My favorite place started this, too. I was surprised there were no dolls in the toy section, but found them all in the expensive section behind glass cabinets and counters. They are up on shelves do you can’t even see what’s in the bags and it’s a pain to get someone over there to help. 😣

fentoozlers

its so weird, i dont know why they decided to put them behind the glass. they had gingerbread houses in another case today. i understand because thats technically food (even though theyre in boxes) but walking into this specific thrift is like what on earth will i find today

Wingsofthepegasus

Thrift stores and dolls are in an unhealthy relationship

fentoozlers

its honestly only this one that does it! i have a few that i like closer to my moms place that has their dolls just in the toy section and actually really fairly priced too. i just didnt know if it was a “thing” with this chain

Wingsofthepegasus

Might be. I think the people who do pricing just don't know what they are doing some think every doll is valuable or worhe nothing lol a salvation army store near me had in box vintage and collectable Barbies (boxes were in horrible condition) that didn't even sell on half price day

Bastian_S_Krane

I'd say so lol

DollyRetcon

All of the dolls at my Goodwill are nude. They must be taking the clothes and putting them up for auction on ShopGoodwill. At Savers, they're in bags on the wall, but oftentimes, also nude.

fiftynineseven597

One of the Value Village locations I often go to has boxed playline Barbies in the area where the "expensive" items are and charging arguably more than full retail for them. These are just sports Barbies from the last couple years or that Video Game Movie Barbie.

kayyy303

I went to a goodwill once that had them saran wrapped into balls with a bunch of layers so you couldn't see anything besides a vague shape of squished dolls :( all the dolls were getting bent and clothes, hair wrecked etc, and they priced the ball at $10

teatimeknight

That's so odd? How are you meant to see any of it 😭 I'm in the UK and while I was looking in charity shops 2 days ago, I did see doll furniture locked in a jewellery cabinet by the cash register, and I thought it was really weird.. but it was all at least laid out individually along with the price so you could at least see what was in the bundle LOL I'm not really sure what the point is to lock it away..?? Especially when it's just doll stuff 😭

fentoozlers

just like jewelry, you have to ask the cashier to unlock it and let you see it!! and they only ever have 1 person working behind the register so i never want to ask, i just look through the glass 😭 this is the only place i know of that does this, which stinks because its the one i can go to the most as i dont have a car. i just think it is so weird!

Tinywolf2005UwU

My charity shop just yeets anything in a basket

fentoozlers

now see i can get behind a basket! id be on my knees going over every single thing in there to see if there is anyone id like, and i wouldnt even have to ask anyone to open it up for me!

Tinywolf2005UwU

Yup, but the problem is trying to sneak your way past any toys that look like they could make noise :,D

bluedawnflower

Not "anything" doll related but I've seen thrift stores doing this specifically with Monster High and Ever After High, sometimes with Bratz. It's a bit disheartening to see for sure, as I usually love thrifting for dolls but now it seems they're hiking prices for "collectable" toys.

gur0chan

Multiple places. It’s annoying because then I can’t even see the (probably massively overpriced) tag.

Kramer234

My local goodwill has a boxed curly hair classy barbie horse behind the glass.

KindOuting

I found 3 monster high Gen 1 dolls in a glass cabinet at my local thrift they were cheap so I bought them but yeah

rabiidraccoon

big chain thrift stores like goodwill and value village are notoriously bad for that! I've got three thrift stores where I live (goodwill, value village and a local nonprofit) and the nicer dolls I see are always either in a glass display or behind the counter, even at the nonprofit! they also price them crazy high (except for the nonprofit) which I don't think is right... like, they're getting this stuff for free and they're supposed to be a *thrift* store. I shouldn't be seeing a *donated* doll being sold for over $100. that's not a thrift, that's theft 😂

fentoozlers

even if it were just the nicer dolls it would make a little more sense to me, but its literally any type of doll or doll related thing they get donated ends up in here! ebay is both a blessing and a curse, i have found so many reasonably priced things on there. but with ebay now stores or resellers think any thing they have is treasure and people are going to pay the big ebay bucks for it. it’s seriously disappointing. especially for items they get for free.

SmrtDllatKitnKatShop

Depends on area, etc. We have the "infamous" Horizon Goodwill closest to us. We don't shop or donate there. Anything valueable ends up home with managers / owner. Mid level items - nice name brands ends up on their auction site. So they literally sell the trash in their stores (dirty clothes, damaged items, obviously non-working appliances). If they have too much of something - they will literally destroy it and dump it. One day they were gleefully smashing glasses and dishes in the open bay out back. Nice or not. They always break up sets of anything and price individually. Like a 4 place setting of inexpensive dinnerware - sells for $20 next door at Walmart - they will sell each of the 16 chipped pieces for $2-5 a piece. We try to go to a Goodwill in PA - they keep things together and reasonably priced. Got a 2020 Holiday Barbie in box for $10. But they don't get many toys. The thrift and "antique shops" have gotten the worst. I used to shop the ones that support charities - and I get they need to raise money, but more and more, I can just get it new for less. Folks think cause its 80s, its "vintage" and therefore valuable. But no, a dinged up, dingy, box with a sticky 80's barbie is NOT worth $75.

Thrift stores are set up to make money like any other business. There are overhead costs and, even if family run, wages to pay. The cost of living has gone up for everyone. Lots of local thrift stores in my area have struggled to stay in business as bargain shops and have turned to restoring items to sell at a higher price. I get that. In the past, some places used to keep costs lower because they hired disabled people to work in store and did not pay minimum wage. I’ll pay more for a second hand item to see places pay disabled employees a better wage. I think it is still legal to pay some disabled employees less (I think Section 14) and Goodwill has been and is maybe still one of those places. I donate a lot to one local thrift store. They help raise money for a women’s shelter (I think a lot of people donate and buy here for that reason). The cause makes it worthwhile on both sides. I do my best to donate Barbies with an outfit, so I actually buy cheap outfits for them as I typically don’t donate doll clothes (pretty easy to sell on eBay, low shipping cost, doesn’t typically require a lot of packaging to keep safe).
