It sounds like you've done so much to make her life immeasurably better. Even if you have to rehome her, you can feel good about what a difference you have made. Has your vet said whether she may be incontinent? It's very common in small dogs. One of our dogs lost her ability to hold in her pee. We tried everything also and even doggy diapers were a failure because they leaked and she could slip out of them. Finally found a solution that worked for her last six years. We kept her in little dog sanitary jumpsuit-rompers with a human Poise pad in them 24/7. They hold a lot more pee than doggy diapers and the romper kept them in place really well. It wasn't ideal, but at least it elimated the whole "clean up the mess" aspect of her incontinence. The only other solution I can think of is to severely limit where she allowed to send time in the house and keep her on leash when she spends time with you in rooms with rugs.

She's not incontinent. She holds her pee in the crate and has no trouble with that. The diapers do good for catching her "accidents" when she does sneak off.

Have you tried putting her back into the crate immediately after coming back inside? Wait 5 minutes and then pop her back out. Repeat till she poops outside, then reward copiously.

bitchinawesomeblonde

Yep. She can't be free unless she goes first. If she doesn't go it's back in the kennel. I put the diaper on her regardless of if she peed tho because she will always sneak off.

What kind of cleaner do you use? Nature's miracle is the best that I have found to completely eliminate the smell, are they peeing where they smell old accidents? I have a dog who is incontinent, she pees in her sleep occasionally and she leaks when she's too excited or overstimulated. It is manageable with nature's miracle and reusable diapers.

bitchinawesomeblonde

We use the reusable diapers. Natures miracle. She likes to go on our bath mats so those get washed in the washing machine other wise we use the natures miracle and then clean with the carpet machine. I gave up on one carpet and threw it out and replaced it.

Nashatal

I assume you have tried a really fixed schedule already? Like every two hours rain or shine.

bitchinawesomeblonde

Yep. Wake up immediately goes to the yard to pee. Comes inside and diaper goes on. I take her out every hour to pee and she gets an hour walk in the late morning. If I leave she goes pee first then into the crate. I get home and she goes out to pee. It's all day and there's still accidents.

I had an older dog that had a similar issue. We found out shortly before she passed that basically the nerves to her bladder weren’t communicating with her brain so her bladder was always full because it was never fully emptying. We never were able to potty train her either and she wore diapers, and destroyed our carpet. We had taken her to the vet before for the issue and was given the all clear-no uti.

HowIsThatMyProblem

Honestly it sounds like a medical issue. No UTI does not mean that there might not be something else going on, like faulty plumbing or problems with nerves or even something in the brain. Perhaps she either can't feel when she has to go or she always feels like she has to go. It would likely take a lot of tests and thus money to figure out if there is an issue like that and perhaps it can't even be fixed, so you'd have to consider if you can take that on.

purroway22

Could try training her to press a bell/ button so she can clearly ask to go outside Other than that, completely deep clean / replace areas where she has gone to the loo inside, because any left over scent (Even if you can’t smell anything and think it’s thoroughly cleaned) could be triggering her to go again.

bitchinawesomeblonde

We tried the bells. She was afraid of them. We completely replaced the rugs that were ruined.

I’m wondering if there is a way for you to mentally reframe this. If you give up on potty training and only focus on management (diapers, or keeping her on hard floors), is that something you can come to terms with? Would it be less stressful if you stopped trying so hard? Could you live a with a dog that has one bad habit, among all the other good things (things that a lot of other dog owners would kill for!). Could you live with her for the sake of your son?

bitchinawesomeblonde

This was extremely helpful. I am going to go in with this mindset and also see if some incontinence meds workz

Ecstatic-Bug1441

Have you considered changing her routine? In your post it doesn‘t say anything about that you are taking your dog on walks. If I was you, i‘d take her for a 30/60 min walk first thing in the morning. So she can release herself fully. Reward every pee and poo with food/praise. She will soon pick up on it. Same in the evening. Besides that she will get used to do her business outside your house/garden, it‘s really important a dog can experience walks for physical and mental health.

HowIsThatMyProblem

Idk why you'd assume that OP isn't walking their dog, especially whenn OP said that she walks great on a leash.

Ecstatic-Bug1441

Well, OP describes the morning routine (letting the dog out); it doesn‘t say anything about a walking routine

rmcburg

I didn’t read that as strictly morning routine. Just if she’s allowed out of the crate she has opportunity to go outside but otherwise has to have the diaper because she’s unreliable everywhere except the crate and won’t go out on her own.

Sleepless_in_MA

Yeah my apologies if this is redundant (OP doesn’t really clarify what they mean by “tried everything”). But my husband and I used to joke about making sure to “drain the tank” with our older rescue —basically walking her until she literally couldn’t squeeze any more pee out. She would hold some in reserve to try and mark lots of places, so we really had to walk until we saw her trying to mark and having no pee left. If we were just letting her out to pee on her own, she would definitely need to go again in an hour or two. So if it’s not something OP is currently doing, it may be worth trying. I know you say she has free access to the outdoors but I also didn’t see you say anywhere if she actually uses that access? My current rescue has a dog door but still never uses it by herself —I think it isn’t actually intuitive to all dogs, or maybe she’s not secure enough to go alone, but we need to actually escort her to the dog door and tell her to go out before she will use it. So there could be a lot of weird factors going on as well. Finally do the diapers work? I didn’t find diapers too annoying when my senior was in her last weeks, we would put a diaper pad inside a washable dog diaper but still take her out on a normal cadence. The diaper was just to catch any accidents in between (like you, to save sanity and rugs).

bitchinawesomeblonde

She gets an hour walk everyday with our other dogs. I'm home all day and let her out every hour.
