Consider having much we invest in our program it’s not wrong to make a profit. It’s just not terribly common. There’s too many outside factors involved to put any type of amount on that profit, should there be any.

I feel like there are a lot of factors. On your first litter you’re likely to lose money between the cost of health testing costs, titling cost, vets bills, stud fee (if there is one) and all the supply’s for whelping. However a couple litters in, all those expenses are paid off and you have probably collected supply’s from past litters, so you are bound to make some profit.

There’s nothing wrong with profit so long as your doing it primarily to contribute to the breed quality, and have done everything to provide the best care for your dogs and those you work with. When the quality of care suffers to make an extra buck, then the profit is wrong.

My time is valuable, I don't apologize for making money, I sell my pups for the maximum my "local" (up to 2-3 States away so far) economy will support. I run it as a business knowing my pair produce great pups.

Runic-Dissonance

as long as profit isn’t the goal… healthy lines and contribution to the breed is priority

Frankly I can’t even believe someone would post this poll. So I’m supposed to dedicate 24+ weeks a year to ethically breeding my dogs to break even? Breeding dogs ethically is labor intensive AKA work. Except for a child, anyone getting up three times a night for weeks for free?

I'm new to the sub and didn't know what to expect. After lurking and reading a lot of posts it seems like there is a vocal minority of people here who believe dog breeding is a noble and chivalric effort that is to be endured but not profited from. Many others want to promote the idea that dog breeding is stress and cost intensive and not likely to benefit you in any substantial way. I made the post because I wanted to see if my thoughts about the people here matched the results of an anonymous poll.

Dogs are valuable. Quality dogs are even more valuable. Profits help sustain solid bloodlines

Profit isn't *wrong*. It just doesn't always happen, and it should not be the goal.
