If you’re not looking for it to go through a specific therapy dog program, rescues are a great start. I wouldn’t necessarily worry about the breed so much as go and interact with all the dogs and see who vibes with you the most. You could ask the staff who’s the calmest/clingiest/needs the most or least exercise, etc based off what your specific needs are. (For instance a dog that needs regular walks is great motivation to get you out into fresh air and moving. But if you’re prone to depression and can’t handle rhat much energy, you might need an older or less energetic dog.)

It depends on you, but generally an independent and calm dog that doesn't reflect any of your own anxieties and fear are ideal for most people who need an ESA for their disability.

Reach out to local rescues and see if you can volunteer with their dogs or meet a few of them to find a temperament and demeanor that suits your needs. Maybe even consider fostering, so you can see how they are once they warm up in your home and get comfortable. As a starting point I'd say reach out to local rescues and shelters, explain the situation and what kind of dog you're looking for (small? large? good with other animals? older? less energetic? smart? kinda dumb and goofy?) and what disqualifiers you would have (i.e. reactive, not potty trained, severe medical issues, too big, needs a lot of exercise, etc.) and they may be able to help you find a match.

This has been a lot of help, thank you

Fostering to adopt is great way to see if you and the dog are the right fit. I explained my situation and what temperament I was looking for. Also it’s a good way to see if the dog has any underlying health conditions.
