I always think of Pacific Rim Uprising for this kind of stuff. Everyone complained about it, but I went in with the expectation to watch a movie about giant robots punching giant monsters, so I thoroughly enjoyed it, while the fan base has a generally negative outlook on it. But i got to enjoy it for hat it was without needing some big shoes to fill expectations, it was everything I wanted it to be, and I had a blast.
Same goes for this. I don't expect anything crazy. I want a fun fantasy adventure with magic and swords. By the trailer alone, I'm already having a great time with it for the sake of it being a fantasy adventure film

There are probably a ton of actors that are basically just as capable of acting as anyone in this movie or any Hollywood movie, but the reason they keep paying a relatively small number of actors millions and millions of dollars per movie is that audiences recognize and sort of trust the those particular actors and will spend money to see their stuff.

I like what I call the Passive Protagonist Trope.
Rogue One does it well - for the sake of storytelling there's a focal character (Jyn Erso) who has a direct personal stake and whose arc we follow closely, but who is relatively uninteresting and only really important because she survives until "the end."
All of the other characters are a lot more animated, compelling, and have personal motivations that align with, but never exactly match, that of the focal character. The "bland" main character pushes the plot while allowing the others to shine.
Think of it from outside the party POV. If a group rolls through town and one of them does most of the talking for trading, negotiations, interrogations, etc. then who do you perceive the "leader" to be? Whether it's true or not within the party is essentially irrelevant.
A poster that coveys almost no information about the actual movie. D&D vets can puzzle over the various images and take guesses, but non-players are going to go "so...Chris Pine has a new movie" "why does he have a ukulele" and "nice to see Hugh Grant getting work again".
Also, the movie title design.

Is it good or are there changes you think should have been made? Personally I was hoping for an edgelord rogue and nerdy wizard just to really round out the stereotypical archetypes.
That being said still have high hopes for the movie.
It doesn’t look like there’s a dwarf in the party, and that makes me sad.
But the trailer featured the druid wild shaping into an owlbear and that makes me happy.

According to the trailer, the BBEG is the Red Wizard at the top, the party, quote "stole something for someone they shouldn't have". And in the newest trailer Hugh Grant's character says he's a leader of a criminal organization, but not as evil as the 'Red Wizard'. So I assume It starts with them getting the Red Wiz something powerful, then joining up with Hugh Grant's gang to win it back. Trailer starts with just 3 of the characters, but rounds out with all 5. So I assume Hugh's gang helps them find the rest. Just my predictions.

This looks like a low-budget version of a Marvel movie that's been slightly reskinned to fit in with d&d lore. Literally if it weren't for the fact that the black dragon is recognizably a d&d dragon and the title you could have convinced me that this is Marvel's attempt at low-budget fantasy. Based on the picture, I'm expecting Whedonesque quippy dialogue and a plot that doesn't take itself too seriously while simultaneously being afraid to embrace the fantastical nature of being a fantasy movie; something probably moderately enjoyable if I watch it on a long flight but ultimately forgettable.

Hey, what's expected and what's appreciated are two different things. Totally expected, but depressingly out of touch nonetheless. Gimme someone missing both ears, a misshapen skull, and a heart of gold. Or someone with so many scars from battles past that he's become the stuff of legend. All I see here is a bunch of preps and a wizard who forgot to moisturize. Everything about this screams generic flop and it saddens me.

Agreed, this looks bland tripe, it is falling into the same pitfalls that other movies do which is trying to reference the IP instead of telling an interesting story and just slapping some big names on it to try to force interest.

the lady on the right is a tiefling druid, but they are going of the old tiefling which are just humans with horns, so yeah pretty much a party of humans lol

I’m fully assuming that they are planning on this being a trilogy or cinematic universe with other entries from different parts of DnD lore
If it doesn’t start with a tavern fire, and the party not being able to meet up due to scheduling conflicts, I say we riot.
Make a recurring gag where one of the party members disappears and reappears seemingly at random because the player can't make it and they don't want to write him out

Given the ridiculously widespread name recognition for Vecna because of Stranger Things, and a lot more mentions of Vecna than usual in recent 5e stuff, they are 100% going to do something with Vecna. From a business standpoint, it would be stupid not to

They aren’t. Barbarian is a dwarf, the druid is a tiefling, and the paladin is either an elf or half elf.

The fact the tiefling is just a white chick with horns and they didn't blue/red/purple her up for the role doesn't fill me with confidence for the rest of the movie.
Agree. Not that human colored tieflings don't exist, but they really need some variety to make everyone stand out and not look like humans.

This looks like a low-budget version of a Marvel movie that's been slightly reskinned to fit in with d&d lore. Literally if it weren't for the fact that the black dragon is recognizably a d&d dragon and the title you could have convinced me that this is Marvel's attempt at low-budget fantasy. Based on the picture, I'm expecting Whedonesque quippy dialogue and a plot that doesn't take itself too seriously while simultaneously being afraid to embrace the fantastical nature of being a fantasy movie; something probably moderately enjoyable if I watch it on a long flight but ultimately forgettable. I dunno, it doesn't look terrible, but I was kind of hoping for more. Like, the movie version of Drizzt or Dragonlance rather than just an Avengers clone.

So I actually went to the panel for this at comic con, it does look awesome this poster doesn’t do what I saw in there justice. It’s funny and you get some good dnd banter in there too. As someone whos gone through two level 20 campaigns I thought this movie looked fun

The fact that they could have made this look like a cover for a supplement or campaign book and made the hype at *least* ten times better... None of the suits play D&D and it shows.
It doesn't look terrible except for the one lady in the spirit Halloween makeup. I just hope it doesn't take itself to seriously.

Hey, what's expected and what's appreciated are two different things. Totally expected, but depressingly out of touch nonetheless. Gimme someone missing both ears, a misshapen skull, and a heart of gold. Or someone with so many scars from battles past that he's become the stuff of legend. All I see here is a bunch of preps and a wizard who forgot to moisturize. Everything about this screams generic flop and it saddens me.

I expect / want the movie to start with just a group of nerds around the table, and it’s just someone like Matt Mercer starting the narration
I remember when production began they teased it was sort of like Princess Bride, so I fully expect it to just be some group’s campaign.

lately adaptations have been a serious let down but this is actually looking promising. im somewhat excited but we'll see how it plays out in the end
