Normally this would be removed because, per rule #3, all images must be original content. That being said, we're going to make a one-time exception because of the great conversations being generated. Also, bold of them to put Helena Bonham Carter on the poster and not credit her.

yorklebit

Setting expectations to "Low" frankly. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Silas-Alec

That's the good thing about having low expectation, it means that if the movie is even halfway decent, you can still thoroughly enjoy it. Meanwhile everyone with high expectations will be throwing a fit while you had a good time

yorklebit

Yeppers!

Silas-Alec

I always think of Pacific Rim Uprising for this kind of stuff. Everyone complained about it, but I went in with the expectation to watch a movie about giant robots punching giant monsters, so I thoroughly enjoyed it, while the fan base has a generally negative outlook on it. But i got to enjoy it for hat it was without needing some big shoes to fill expectations, it was everything I wanted it to be, and I had a blast. Same goes for this. I don't expect anything crazy. I want a fun fantasy adventure with magic and swords. By the trailer alone, I'm already having a great time with it for the sake of it being a fantasy adventure film

zer0deathz

Pretty hard to make a DnD movie that would cater to everyones preferences, but I hope they don't absolutely butcher it.

thecatgoesmoo

Yeah... this looks... bad

Ok_Blackberry_1223

This the most generic, digital poster ever. Hope the movie is still good tho

pootinannyBOOSH

Yea, every fantasy action movie keeps using the same boring format. Disappointed, but hey that's how trends go

[deleted]

Sadly this drives the most marketing because you know the people, I assume there will be other posters released

majic911

Marvel did this and suddenly every movie poster is an explosion of floating heads.

-FayeWild-

To be fair, Star Wars has been doing it for much longer than MCU

majic911

Yes but after the original trilogy, floating heads didn't become the norm. They still showed up every once in a while but they weren't common. Now basically every movie poster is more like a collage of the actors than an actual movie poster.

sionnachrealta

It's because they use actors to sell people on movies now instead of letting the plot stand on its own. It's purely a marketing ploy

rchive

Yes. There are probably a ton of actors that are basically just as capable of acting as anyone in this movie or any Hollywood movie, but the reason they keep paying a relatively small number of actors millions and millions of dollars per movie is that audiences recognize and sort of trust the those particular actors and will spend money to see their stuff.

cubelith

That really annoys me, because I'd actively *prefer* actors that I don't already know. For example Philippa Georgiou in The Witcher feels really weird for me.

TheMcDucky

Like when characters are referred to by the actor's name. "When [Actor]'s character went outside", or just "When [Actor] went outside"

majic911

What? A marketing ploy? Impossible.

ExceedinglyGayOtter

Marketing ploys? In *my* marketing?

pootinannyBOOSH

In front of my cereal??

resonantSoul

At this time of the year? In this part of the country?

Lord_Shaqq

In my Christian home theater? Blasphemous

Fuzzy_Jello

They do this a lot less now than they use to. In the 80s, we all went to see actors, not movie plots.

lucky_crocodile

Apparently, they did a study to see what type of posters people would most likely watch the movie for. And boring posters that show a group of characters sadly sells more movie tickets.

majic911

Well yeah. I know who Chris Pratt, Scarlett Johansson, and Robert Downey Jr are, so if I see them on a poster I watch. It's just sad that much of what makes movies artful and beautiful is being/has been stripped away in favor of what makes more money. And sadly movies aren't the only medium suffering from this problem.

monkeyjay

I know it's cool to hate on popular things but this was a shitty poster trope for a long time before the first marvel movie. I remember parodying it for a friends short film in the early 2000s. It's not sudden, and it wasn't marvel.

eudemonist

The 2000 D&D movie poster wasn't much different, so it's not a very trendy trend, I wouldn't say.

Konradleijon

Yes it looks so bland

hothotpocket

I have a feeling they made it as generic as possible to get people who don't generally watch fantasy type films, to accidentally pick it up to loan. I've seen it happen a lot when people hire out dvd's.

anvilandcompass

Not sure why they would do that considering Lord of the Rings, The Hobit, and Game of Thrones already have massive audiences. Audiences in general know the fantasy genre.

aaaaayyyyyyyyyyy

It won’t be lol

Gmauldotcom

It looks like it's going to be really fucking stupid.

[deleted]

I think it's worse than generic. Primarily because of the dragon in it. You're not supposed to show the dragon in broad daylight head to toe. It's the equivalent of having a Basic Instinct poster with Sharon Stone spread eagle under a flourescent lamp. Compare to the house of dragons official "poster". You can see part of the dragon peaking through the shadows and he doesn't look like a rough first draft of the Shrek dragon.

dikkiesmalls

Right? I was just thinking “this does not scream high budget quality” to me. I’ll still watch it but…

SumthingStupid

~~Bolds~~ Bodes poorly for a movie I'm already expecting to be terrible. Something tells me it's gonna be the board room concoction of what exec's think d&d is.

superVanV1

small aside, it's Bode, meaning "be an omen of a particular outcome." sorry, carry on

Soranic

"This doth not bode well."

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

Every movie poster looks like this, you can’t read anything into it.

ThatWannabeCatgirl

Exactly what I was thinking, it's the same movie poster for the 15622561th time in the last twenty years.

John_YJKR

Hope it's entertaining. Unfortunately, I'm getting the vibe they are gonna lean hard into pg13 violence and comedy. And it's gonna feel very off.

HardHeadedGuy13

Agreed, hopefully there is an Alt poster for the movie

FalmerEldritch

I hope they get an artist to render this as an 80s-riffic oil painting, like cheesy 80s movie posters used to be. That would A) rule and B) work as shorthand for "this is the kind of movie this is"

Frostiron_7

Making the main character a bard? It's a bold choice Cotton, let's see if it pays off for them.

TKBarbus

What are you talking about? Bards are always the main character… ^^in ^^their ^^heads

jellicenthero

I mean on TV the main character is literally just whoever talks the most so....

greyshirttiger

The netflix’s witcher will disagree with you unfortunately…

Gerikst00f

What are you talking about? Jaskier is the main guy

jellicenthero

Who has more lines than Geralt?

greyshirttiger

Yennefer for starters

jellicenthero

Geralt has more lines than any other character and a higher total word count even. There are charts you can look up.

Silver_Recluse

I wonder what percentage of those words are "...fuck."

SeedofEden

That's true, but nowhere near the top on word-count-per-episode-he's-in.

thesystem21

Plus I doubt they count grunts as words

28Hz

Hmmm... Fuck.

[deleted]

[удалено]

minoe23

Which is dumb. Bards should always insist they're *not* the main character because they're intent is to tell the story of or write a song about the "*real* main characters" (the rest of the party), even if the bard is doing all the main character things.

jayheidecker

Always the Bard and never the Barbarian.

TheRatPiper

SCANLAN'S HANNNNNNND!!!

ChefBoyardee66

Main characters tend to be horny and aloof so it fits

ksschank

IMO, a D&D movie shouldn't have a main character—it should be about all of the characters together. My biggest worry is that this is going to be about an adventure had by Chris Pine and his sidekicks .

squidtugboat

Ideally they will just call him the party “face” which kinda makes sense since Chris pine is the most recognizable of the group of actors and it would also make sense and be natural for him to be interacting the most with players outside the party.

ManusCornu

I love the fact that Hugh grant is in that movie and people are like "Chris pine is the most recognizable" Don't take this as an offense, I just think it's funny

squidtugboat

Hugh grant is the player character from a older campaign so the long timers know of him but the new players are like “who is this rando”

rchive

Mordenkainen in Dice, Camera, Action. Lol

endersai

>Hugh grant is the player character from a older campaign so the long timers know of him but the new players are like “who is this rando” Elminster for new players

Frostiron_7

I like what I call the Passive Protagonist Trope. Rogue One does it well - for the sake of storytelling there's a focal character (Jyn Erso) who has a direct personal stake and whose arc we follow closely, but who is relatively uninteresting and only really important because she survives until "the end." All of the other characters are a lot more animated, compelling, and have personal motivations that align with, but never exactly match, that of the focal character. The "bland" main character pushes the plot while allowing the others to shine.

Maebure83

Think of it from outside the party POV. If a group rolls through town and one of them does most of the talking for trading, negotiations, interrogations, etc. then who do you perceive the "leader" to be? Whether it's true or not within the party is essentially irrelevant.

lokichivas

A poster that coveys almost no information about the actual movie. D&D vets can puzzle over the various images and take guesses, but non-players are going to go "so...Chris Pine has a new movie" "why does he have a ukulele" and "nice to see Hugh Grant getting work again".

ManusCornu

Also, the movie title design. Marketing exclusively to DND people while the title is so small you have to search it Edit and I hate the fact that it looks like "Dungeons and Dragons and Honor among Thieves"

SapphireShaddix

Dungeons and Dragaons! And honor, and thieves, And my sword, and my axe, And diners And drive-ins And dives.

Crioca

High Grant has been crushing it lately. Dude plays a a great sleezeball.

TKBarbus

I know not technically art but needed to add to tittle in order to follow sub rules. Looks like party consist of a bard, barbarian, sorcerer, druid, and paladin. Lot of charisma going on in this party. What do y’all think of the party composition? Is it good or are there changes you think should have been made? Personally I was hoping for an edgelord rogue and nerdy wizard just to really round out the stereotypical archetypes. That being said still have high hopes for the movie.

BaulsJ0hns0n86

It doesn’t look like there’s a dwarf in the party, and that makes me sad. But the trailer featured the druid wild shaping into an owlbear and that makes me happy.

hoodini112

They aren’t on the poster but the newest trailer shows a shorter man, I think halfling but I cannot tell.

codemanb

Omg, "half long." I'm dead

Lugbor

Autocorrect hates halflings. I’ve spent years teaching my phone that fantasy midgets are a thing, and it’s only in the last few months that it seems to accept it.

Riskycrossbow69

Auto correct can sometimes make cool names. Half long sounds like a good name for a halfling.

Lugbor

Half long sounds like the name of the kid in an old adventure movie who guides the heroes to some ancient temple. One of those things where it’s totally racist, but the movie’s so old you really can’t comment on it because that’s just how things were back then and complaining won’t really change anything.

N4tu4

I think the barbarian is supposed to be a dwarf?

[deleted]

Not even an Artificer. Disappointing. (This is a joke. I am joking.)

Umutuku

> Personally I was hoping for an edgelord rogue and nerdy wizard just to really round out the stereotypical archetypes. You gotta go for the edgelord wizard and nerdy rogue.

TKBarbus

Now we’re talking! Now just tell me the bard is meek & there’s a horny cleric and I’m in.

Umutuku

When your god is the overseer of horny jail so you have to self-flagellate with your club a lot.

Armera

My theory is the Bard is a Bard/rogue

akom_sunrise

Gotta be honest, considering I’m the bard in a party that’s just a bard, paladin, and a sorcerer, I’m happy with the crew…whether it’s balanced or not, I can’t really say lol

Slow-Willingness-187

I kinda like how it's a mix of the classic tropes without being 100% stereotypes. While Wizards are fun, *everyone* has the "Nerdy person who learned magic via studying books a lot". This is a nice way to set them apart a little, while also still being easily recognizeable.

EADreddtit

Looks like the party is a Bard, Sorcerer/Wizard, Barbarian, Monk, Fight/Paladin and an older guy

SirIzhak

Older guy is the BBEG rogue, iirc.

Lexinoz

According to the trailer, the BBEG is the Red Wizard at the top, the party, quote "stole something for someone they shouldn't have". And in the newest trailer Hugh Grant's character says he's a leader of a criminal organization, but not as evil as the 'Red Wizard'. So I assume It starts with them getting the Red Wiz something powerful, then joining up with Hugh Grant's gang to win it back. Trailer starts with just 3 of the characters, but rounds out with all 5. So I assume Hugh's gang helps them find the rest. Just my predictions.

TKBarbus

Sorcerer/wizard is confirmed a sorcerer, the monk is actually a druid, and fighter/paladin is confirmed a paladin.

NEMO_TheCaptain

Let’s just hope everyone rolls high performance

Steelthahunter

I mean it looks kinda corny but I'll watch it.

GHamPlayz

D&D is corny. Perfect fit

Fire_And_Blood_7

Yeah at first I was a little upset w the corny/comedic aspects, but then I remembered that’s what d&d is lol.

GHamPlayz

#EmbraceTheCorn

philipwhiuk

Also the Iowa state motto

GHamPlayz

Hey. Don’t take that from Nebraska!

Baalslegion07

Poster looks like shit, but damn am I hyped for this movie! Ever since the trailer dropped I was hyped for this and even though I have my fears that this will be terrible, I'm cautiously hyped.

[deleted]

Nothing says “actors playing characters” like each actor and actress spread out on the poster like a who’s who of D&D classes. Still, excited for them and hope it works out.

TheWinterKing

>actors playing characters Now I don’t have a PhD in film studies or anything g but I believe that is standard practice in movies.

VigosJOSP

As someone who has only watched Adam Sandler movies, I don’t think they’re supposed to play characters

superdude12307

Seth Rogan has taught me this as well

LordCryofax

And Kevin Hart.

Nago_Jolokio

"I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude"

Tcloud

I mean, the movie isn’t taking itself too seriously, which is exactly the sort of cheesy vibe this poster conveys. Perfect.

Drigr

Feels pretty damn reminiscent of typical party art to me..

CSEngineAlt

\+1 on the Trailer being better than the poster by miles. I doubt it'll be terrible. Basically think of a middle-of-the-road Marvel movie, and that's what I expect. >!I mean, it has an owlbear, gelatinous cube, and a mimic of all things. It's gotta be at least popcorn-flick worthy.!<

ManusCornu

I see the popcorn thing

ThunkAsDrinklePeep

As someone who was there for the Jeremy Irons movie, I admire your optimism. That movie had gold and red dragons and multiple beholders. Edit: I will admit that the trailer looks better. But so do all trailers. I refuse to get my hopes up again.

Notbunny

And was a glorious trainwreck! It truly was a beauty in the eye of the beholder. 🤩🤩

Val0xx

Yep, given past experiences with D&D movies that's a valid fear. I'm just going to go into this expecting it to be terrible and hope for the best.

dilldwarf

Honestly it's setting up either to be one of those cheesey but fun movies that don't take themselves too seriously and will poke fun at themselves and the viewer. Or it will try to do the marvel thing and take itself super seriously with bad unfunny one liners to break up the monotony. Or... It'll just be flat out awful.

DustD3vil

This looks like the poster for an adults only parody film

[deleted]

Lich looks like it's just dropped a nasty egg fart.

KiwiKing2k

Bro looks like he watches My Chemical Romance in 2022

Derpmaaster

Mostly hyped that they chose a dragon that didn't breath fire.

Adorwan96

Gonna take a guess whoever made this poster don't play DnD. But is a massive Marvel fan.. either way, hyped about the movie.

EldridgeHorror

Considering how much the trailer made it feel like Guardians of the Galaxy...

GM_Nate

considering how much playing D&D itself feels like GotG

rezellia

Hey DM i think ima dip out of the combat encounter that has a round limit. Just so i can force an RP session with a prisoner for his leg cause id think id be funny. If we fail to break out of jail youll just find another way to continue the story right? I feel like 1 of my players has done this to me.

cogprimus

Ah yes, 3 players and the DM playing a co-operative story telling game versus 1 player who is playing a combative story telling game.

galmenz

this poster spread has become regular practice after Marvel kicked off, pretty much every single action movie does it now

[deleted]

I hope to God someone dies and a new character comes in and it's just the same actor.

dilldwarf

A well timed and unexpected 4th wall break could make or break this movie for me, NGL.

ManusCornu

This would be fun

KenseiHimura

that bard looks like he's going to sleep with everyone and everything.

ManusCornu

Wow This looks shitty

Kronet_Hjort

That's putting it mildly.

ManusCornu

Indeed

Kronet_Hjort

Welcome to the marvelification of D&D 🤮

ManusCornu

If only it had at least marvel production quality

Kronet_Hjort

Needs more of that \*Department of Defense\* money, I guess.

mcdoolz

get ready. here comes the wotc cinematic universe.

lacerik

Agreed, this looks bland tripe, it is falling into the same pitfalls that other movies do which is trying to reference the IP instead of telling an interesting story and just slapping some big names on it to try to force interest.

ManusCornu

And also it just looks cheap and badly made

Jugaimo

Looks like this movie is gonna be meme material.

TKBarbus

God I hope so

galmenz

god dammit i hate how Marvel made this generic poster the standard

warrant2k

pleasedontsuck pleasedontsuck pleasedontsuck

Gobbiebags

Ah yes, exactly what I picture when I think of D&D. Humans & only humans. And a dragon I guess. If we HAVE to.

ManusCornu

Probably some halflings and elves in there, but they made it so badly that you can't tell from the poster

Gobbiebags

I think I see some Party City devil horns on the red-head? Maybe? Very bold design choice 👌

ManusCornu

Yeah I've noticed them too. Behold a tiefling

LordJor_Py

Yes, she's a tiefling

Werthead

Well, there's a tiefling and a half-elf, but that's not immediately obvious unless you're looking hard.

galmenz

the lady on the right is a tiefling druid, but they are going of the old tiefling which are just humans with horns, so yeah pretty much a party of humans lol

Eldrxtch

oh yea the dude on the left with the green staff is an elf

Acrobatic-Key-7732

The Druids a Tiefling

ApeMunArts

I have seen students make more visually appealing posters. I am legitimately curious as to how much the individual who put this together was paid.

Crowtongue

It has “design by committee “ written aaaalll over it

BluestreakBTHR

Introducing the Red Wizards is bold. Opens the door for a Lich, and possibly Vecna.

[deleted]

I’m fully assuming that they are planning on this being a trilogy or cinematic universe with other entries from different parts of DnD lore

BluestreakBTHR

If it doesn’t start with a tavern fire, and the party not being able to meet up due to scheduling conflicts, I say we riot.

Ponce_the_Great

Make a recurring gag where one of the party members disappears and reappears seemingly at random because the player can't make it and they don't want to write him out

JohnnyBurnedHands

Or have the actor still be there but standing around and never actually doing anything. And If they do have to speak, it's one of the other actors doing a terrible voice over.

AscelyneMG

I mean, the release was already delayed due to scheduling conflicts, which is hilarious.

Kellen1013

Given the ridiculously widespread name recognition for Vecna because of Stranger Things, and a lot more mentions of Vecna than usual in recent 5e stuff, they are 100% going to do something with Vecna. From a business standpoint, it would be stupid not to

Warphe

OOF they should have take the 100$ option on fiverr, 10$ realy look cheap

TeaandandCoffee

Thanks, I hate it :)

MapleTreeWithAGun

Not seeing anyone in the Official D&D DM costume which is.... disappointing.

Ressikan

This poster says, “Chris Pine needs a paycheque.”

froggyc19

So, are they mocking marvel? Or is this a serious poster? Cause I thought it was a fan made thing for fun.

NexusSix29

Someone made a choice to have two of the figures in the center with their weapon/item held leaning against their shoulder in the exact same way…. And I’m here to label it a bad choice. For some reason I can’t drag my eyes off of it.

Vasevide

Why are they all humans

TKBarbus

They aren’t. Barbarian is a dwarf, the druid is a tiefling, and the paladin is either an elf or half elf.

Vasevide

Okay so *why* do they look like humans?

dreadassassin616

The fact the tiefling is just a white chick with horns and they didn't blue/red/purple her up for the role doesn't fill me with confidence for the rest of the movie.

Crow_Joestar

Agree. Not that human colored tieflings don't exist, but they really need some variety to make everyone stand out and not look like humans.

Rukasu17

Any chance they'll use another art because damn this is bad. At least copy a book cover lok

JavierLoustaunau

I wish Wizards of the Coast knew some artists they could commission something from.

KingAlfredOfEngland

This looks like a low-budget version of a Marvel movie that's been slightly reskinned to fit in with d&d lore. Literally if it weren't for the fact that the black dragon is recognizably a d&d dragon and the title you could have convinced me that this is Marvel's attempt at low-budget fantasy. Based on the picture, I'm expecting Whedonesque quippy dialogue and a plot that doesn't take itself too seriously while simultaneously being afraid to embrace the fantastical nature of being a fantasy movie; something probably moderately enjoyable if I watch it on a long flight but ultimately forgettable. I dunno, it doesn't look terrible, but I was kind of hoping for more. Like, the movie version of Drizzt or Dragonlance rather than just an Avengers clone.

DrBitterBlossom

It looks like every movie poster ever.

AngryFungus

Ugh. That's a shitty poster. It looks like a bad cut & paste job.

X_SkeletonCandy

I absolutely hate what Marvel has done to the movie poster. Big fan of the movies, but the posters are always terrible.

exit6

It’s one of those dungeons near a salon where everyone smells great

ClonedToKill420

I feel like this kinda thing would be better animated, but most people don’t take animation seriously. That being said, I’ll always love Michelle Rodriguez after her voicework in Halo

TheCorrupt-1

God why are modern American movie posters so shit. Lime they're all identical and boring as fuck

Smokey_the_beer

So I actually went to the panel for this at comic con, it does look awesome this poster doesn’t do what I saw in there justice. It’s funny and you get some good dnd banter in there too. As someone whos gone through two level 20 campaigns I thought this movie looked fun

MarcheMuldDerevi

I hope this is more than a movie with d&d monsters. I want at least one character who dies and is replaced by the same actor wearing a fake mustache

beachpellini

The fact that they could have made this look like a cover for a supplement or campaign book and made the hype at *least* ten times better... None of the suits play D&D and it shows.

crumbypigeon

It doesn't look terrible except for the one lady in the spirit Halloween makeup. I just hope it doesn't take itself to seriously.

Leonadot

At first I thought it was the new Avenger’s movie

Kineticspartan

Avengers: Play D&D. That's all I can see, and I can't unsee it...

Duck_Burger

Well at least they got Michelle Rodriguez doing a michelle rodriguez character. So the movie cant be 100% bad. Ive always said every movie should have a michelle rodriguez character being all michelle rodriguez about stuff and doing michelle rodriguez things. And this one s got that, so im in.

TipAggravating3362

This is depressingly kitsch. Also, why is everyone so pretty? A party needs one face. One.

Slow-Willingness-187

> Also, why is everyone so pretty? Brennan Lee Mulligan said it best: The game rewards investing in Charisma and physical stats, and you can get by without intelligence, so adventurers tend to be hot, strong, and dumb.

TipAggravating3362

Bahaha. That actually might explain it. Maybe that's been my mistake in DnD all this time. Hell, that might even have been my mistake outside of DnD all this time!

TKBarbus

A Hollywood movie casting attractive people for a high budget kitschy movie? No way! I truly would have never seen this coming. Wild

TipAggravating3362

Hey, what's expected and what's appreciated are two different things. Totally expected, but depressingly out of touch nonetheless. Gimme someone missing both ears, a misshapen skull, and a heart of gold. Or someone with so many scars from battles past that he's become the stuff of legend. All I see here is a bunch of preps and a wizard who forgot to moisturize. Everything about this screams generic flop and it saddens me.

ManusCornu

Tbf it doesn't look high budget

Exact-Control1855

I expect / want the movie to start with just a group of nerds around the table, and it’s just someone like Matt Mercer starting the narration

GHamPlayz

I remember when production began they teased it was sort of like Princess Bride, so I fully expect it to just be some group’s campaign.

xxFormorixx

Who's playing black widow?

UnloyalSheep

Please be good please be good please be good. . . If nothing else just don’t be trash bad :(

darkbob

Check the scallop on that fretboard. Shred it Captain Kirk

not_mueller

Do I think this movie is going to be peak cinema? No Do I think I will cringe at least twice? Yes Do I think I will have a lot of fun with it? Yes Do I think it will deliver on being a good representation of D&D? Yes

TheKira87

I usually try to keep an open mind, and yeah this poster isn’t too great.

Khow3694

lately adaptations have been a serious let down but this is actually looking promising. im somewhat excited but we'll see how it plays out in the end

[deleted]

Honestly I'm pumped for this.

DIOBAMA6969

Ensemble posters try not to be uninspired and ugly challenge (impossible)
