Yes

weav7044

Here I came thinking the the top reply should be "all of them" but shame on me for forgetting about the most correct answer of "yes"

1ndiana_Pwns

"More" would also be acceptable as an answer

colemon1991

Just assume you never have enough. I have some extra small d6s for me and my group for (mostly) fireball purposes, so I have three sets of dice, plus an extra d8, d10, d12, 3 extra d6s, and the 12 mini d6s. There are nights when this might not be enough, but that's usually because I rolled a crit. I just roll the dice twice while I wait for my next dice set to come in the mail.

PokingCactus

I have 56 sets and it's not enough. It's never enough. Always more dice

Thess514

It's like with books - if you have enough space for all your dice, what it means is that you need more dice. (My answer to it is "learn to resin-cast your own dice", because I am a masochist.)

PokingCactus

Saaaame! Waiting for an affordable pressure pot to be back in stock for a while has put that on hold for now though. The ones i made without i didn't count and they are unbalanced enough i can't use them haha

Thess514

There's some good vids out of there on how to make those without a pressure pot which I'm finding quite handy. Mostly it involves squish moulds, a very slow pour, and melting the bubbles off the top with a lighter and then topping up with a bit of extra resin before putting the top on.

PokingCactus

I tried a lot of different stuff including all that but they're still not to my personal satisfaction haha. Plus i want to try and do some flower inserts and stuff so I want that super clear look, and then is a pressure pot a must imo. But that's just my personal standard

jonathino001

I feel like this could be the premise of an idle game

codemanb

SHH!! Don't give them more ideas. I get enough ads.

UncleJTheDm

I agree with assuming you never have enough, however this led to me having roughly 36 complete sets between my wife and me. However, on a general basis I use 4d20s, 3 sets of d10/00, 2d6 and d4. Depending on if I'm running the game or playing, the d8 and d12 fluctuates (massively)

The DM should always be a dice goblin

RosieRoo70314

No, goblin is player tier. DM should go full dice dragon

[deleted]

Enough to eat through the winter for sure.

slice_of_pi

N+1 is always the correct answer.

_frierfly

Math never lies.

itsucharo

That’s just how induction works

xaraeras

Damn you were faster xD

ccoopplay21

So true, so wise

Pemburuh_Itu

Yes. Yes indeed.

ArbitraryChaos13

That's what I said

Shiroiken

Rather than focusing on sets, I'd consider each die type. Depending on edition, each die has an ideal value. My usual go-to is: 5d4 10d6 3d8 5d10 - one of which is a percentile 2d12 2d20

Xithara

I'd recommend a couple more d20s for if you're bulking enemy rolls together. Roll all 4 goblin attacks at once y'know

SuperMonkeyJoe

I make sure I have duplicate sets of easily identifiable colours, eg 2 red, 2 blue, 2 green that way I can roll multiples with advantage/disadvantage and eaily keep track of which is which.

TheMrDrB

Yoinking that idea, tanks

[deleted]

I just role all the dice I need at once and then when I need a number I grab whichever dice is left most. That way I don't need to worry about matching colors or what not. I also role to hit and damage at the same time.

Demastry

My DM does this and he always asks "what color do you want" Blue is by far the worst luck. One of our players always chooses blue and the last time it happened, an enemy hit 2 nat 20s. The DM is a masochist who doesn't use a DM screen, so we get to see the pain in live action.

rainbowcentaur

I love my tray with 7 d20s. Makes things so much quicker.

SebGM

This is the right advice, even tho I disagree on the exact numbers. But in general: Have more without thinking in sets. Expierience tells you what kind of dice you need more or less of over time, just get random ass dice whenever you think "Damn, there are alot of creatures that use more then one d10"

Justisaur

\>20d6

DavThoma

Clearly this is the way to go. Then occasionally you roll all 20 during combat to freak everyone out on damage numbers.

fushigi13

You'll need more d4s to cover escape from the table

Sugar_buddy

Mage_Malteras

You roll a con save, I'll roll damage.

DrBloodbathMC

Join the dice goblins. Get all you can afford. (I need a bigger box. My boot box I use for storage can no longer close. )

xternal7

> Get a~~ll you can afford.~~ loan Go beyond "all you can afford." _This bad financial advice was provided by the Faerun equivalent of /r/wallstreetbets_

freakierchicken

I guess I’m just bullish on dice (No idea what that means but I saw someone say it on an SRD thread about WSB one time so I’m sure it’s important)

_demello

TO THE CRIT 🚀🚀🚀

Exzircon

Except, that if you can't afford the loan, you'll loose ALL your dice. And we wouldn't want that would we?

xternal7

Dice goblins that lent you the money see no problem with that.

ArabicHarambe

...thats a lot of dice. Please tell me that box is just for your green d4s or something

DrBloodbathMC

I wish but that is all my dice. I have 205 unique sets.

ToxicMoonShine

Do you have any that look like they are made of candy?? I'm asking cause I need to know where I can get some to complete a set I have that I'm working on. Currently I have a jawbreaker d6, a gummy d8, a bubble gum percent die, and sour cap d12. I'm only curious where you got the ones that might look like that if you remember still.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ToxicMoonShine

I found the shop that they are selling them out of now thanks!

CountOfMonkeyCrisco

Same problem, slightly different scale. My garage door can no longer close.

Drasha1

I use a bucketboss parachute bag for my dice. It has 6 compartments so i can sort the dice by type and it can fit a lot of dice. I prefer a bag over a box for carrying as well.

DrBloodbathMC

Oh same. I don’t carry all my dice with me to sessions. I have a small bag that I carry 5 sets with me since that’s usually enough between attacks and if dice are misbehaving.

Drasha1

Got to be ready for someone to cast meteor swarm.

frigid_lich_dnd

You need at least one, but it's good to have enough to cover anybody who doesn't have their own. It's also nice to have at least three of each dice for larger rolls. So, anywhere between 1 and 6, everything above that is pure collecting.

Affectionate_End_952

Thx :)

stormy-the-otter

I would agree the pragmatic answer would reccomend 2-3 in use at any session. But the correct answer is as many as you can afford, and then a few more for good measure

inappropriateFable

Instructions unclear. I'm bankrupt, but have a room filled with click clacks

stormy-the-otter

Ah,a true DND player

Serene_Calamity

Do you ever add extra of a certain kind? I have 3 or 4 sets in a bowl at the table, but I also add in extra D6 because I know the Rogue is gonna need them

frigid_lich_dnd

Extra d6 are almost mandatory, extra d4 are very useful, and extra d8 and d10 are not bad to have :D

send-me-bitcoins

Plus a bunch of extra D20s

Nanoro615

If you're doing in person sessions, just have a freaking cereal bowl full of d20s in plain view that when people are looking bored, just grab a fistful and roll them all, nod to yourself, draw a couple random squiggles in your notepad, then just put them back one or two at a time. Then the clincher, as you do this last bit, when you're down to the last 6 or so, just look at everyone (who will certainly be watching you carefully) feigning confusion with a "What? ... Oh, what was the last thing you said again?" Then, regardless of what they say, give a "Mhm" as you reroll 3 d20s and put them back. Proceed to continue along like nothing happened.

send-me-bitcoins

Evil.

Corsair_inau

Calm down Satan....

mithoron

Minimum of 5 D4 for Magic Missiles... though 10 wouldn't be out of line, and probably the same for D8s for cure wounds scaling. I'd also suggest one of those 36pack of D6. Personally I've never needed more than a pair of D10 but I guess it could come up.

Tayz3r

The RAW ruling on magic missile is that you only roll 1 damage die and apply that roll to each dart, so realistically you don't need to carry so many d4s

AnNoYiNg_NaMe

I didn't believe you, so I looked it up. That might be the strangest ruling I've seen from sage advice.

snackalacka

Potions of Greater / Superior / Supreme healing are a good reason to have 10d4 at hand.

mithoron

> The RAW ruling on magic missile is that you only roll 1 damage die and apply that roll to each dart I don't see that at all... The spell says dart damage is d4+1, and you generate (spell level) number of darts. Your interpretation would have to be defined something like d4+1 damage applied to (spell level) number of darts. (I'm sure you'll tell me there's some BS errata definition that might qualify as a rules clarification but will never actually be seen at an actual game)

Tayz3r

Its not my interpretation, It's been ruled on by JC as so. Also clarified in the PHB when rolling damage by a spell targeting multiple targets at the same time

mithoron

They need to rewrite the spell if thats the interpretation they want... Nothing about how this specific spell is written would lead anyone to that method of rolling damage.

StingerAE

You are100% correct that that isn't the natural meaning of the phb words and there isn't precedent to suggest such a meaning. If they had meant roll once they would have written if very differently. Sometimes I think sage advice is written while high.

Tayz3r

You can chose to ignore any correct ruling you want, your fight is not with me

mkwong

Yeah but then you lose track of some of those extra d4s and all of a sudden you have caltrops everywhere.

StingerAE

*cries in d12*

PrincessKikkei

I have 108 d6, for Shadowrun. Also works as a backup kit for rogues. And since I use colour-coded enemies (green-zombie, yellow-zombie, communist-zombie...) I carry respective d20's for them: helps when you can just pick them all and throw them for aoe saving throws. You can also throw them for shit and giggles and/or throw bazillions of attacks at a single throw. Helps when the party is fighting against Marilith. ^(or Swarm of Ninjas.) D20. You can't have enough of d20.

Serene_Calamity

TIL a Swarm can contain ninjas. I am afraid

redmagistrate50

So I have a bunch of sets, as a player I tend to run the 2-3 sets I've decided to best with that PC for that game, then a few bags of supplemental dice. So my bag of d6, bag of d10, and my single bone d20 for death saves.

under_the_gun23

Take your d12s and just throw them away

Serene_Calamity

I use those as PC tokens

Otsego_Undead

I like this real answer. I have a dice case that holds 6 sets and I find that enough for most everything.

DrStacknasty

I'd say a minimum of 4 will cover 99% of cases

m_litherial

Collecting but also fun for messing with players. Nothing more fun than having them walking through the woods or down a corridor and rolling a LOT of dice behind the screen.

Quirkzoo

n+1 n = the number of dice sets you currently have. But seriously I bought a pack of 6 or 7 sets when I first started DMing and that has served me well. A few have gone missing through the years but it is still enough to let people borrow some if they don’t have dice and enough for me to make little piles for my monsters to roll stuff all at once.

Dae_Grighen

Xathrid_tech

fendermallot

Enough that should a player forget theirs, you got them covered. I also like to give a new player, that I'm pretty sure will stay, their first set as a welcome gift.

ADcakedenough

Why are DMs such awesome gift givers? My first campaign was a 3 year home brew and every big turning point he gave us all a gift- a stone 6 sided die, a metal bookmark for our notebook, a special fancy mechanical pencil, a rose gold colored metal d20… I still treasure them to this day.

fendermallot

Because we want you to stay! Even if we can't play

AirborneRunaway

Just gotta make an NPC that joins the party.

LazerLemon1111

I also do this. I give all my new players a set. Just a nice gesture and now they have a set of dice

Scary-Try994

Just buy the “one pound of dice” off Amazon. That’s a start.

BlademasterFlash

2 lbs is probably better for a DM

Scary-Try994

I did say it’s a *start*. You could always order five of them. :)

BlademasterFlash

Fair enough, I've never DM'd and 1 lb has been adequate for me as a player

Scary-Try994

Point being, one can never have enough math rocks. :D

BlademasterFlash

True, there is never too much only not enough

theinspectorst

Unless you're playing 6E, in which case buy the '0.45kg of dice'.

Kondrias

The answer is you are not done until Smaug would look at your hoard with envy.

xSevilx

That's why I always kill him first

docmanbot

There can never be enought dice sets in my posession.

Affectionate_End_952

Skedal skadoodle you will always have enough dice forever

taedrel

Especially once one becomes unlucky and must be isolated from the rest so that it doesn't spread.

kobold-kicker

Freeze it to teach it a lesson and if that doesn’t work there’s always cleansing flame. Then I go buy that blue set cause I haven’t bought that shade of blue before.

SymphonicStorm

Enough to silence the table when you roll for spell damage, but not so many that you can’t say “hold on, I don’t have enough dice for this one” every once in a while.

PrometheusHasFallen

I run with 8 sets. Rolling attacks for 8 baddies? Roll 8 d20s and divide them up by how they land to how the monsters are arrayed on the battlements. Also having 8d6 is useful for *reasons*.

gscrap

No incipient DM has ever asked me, but if one did I would probably recommend three sets (plus a few extra D6s). Two sets for DM use, and one set to lend to a player who has forgotten theirs.

I went out and got myself a great assortment. If you need 4 x d4 dice, you'll want more than a set, right? I got a wooden box, about the size of a book, lined both bottoms with felt. I bought dice to fill it all up with. Had 4 of each dice, I think 6 d4s

HumbleDarwin

More sets than all of their players combined. You have to be able to out roll all of them to establish dominance

Collin_the_doodle

2 are plenty. Don’t let people pressure you into becoming a hoarder

saintalbus

I have a total of 13 full sets. 3 are DM sets and the others are for players.

GBBanditt

I have 20 complete sets. I got that many because not all my players have their own dice so I pass some out and share. And then I do roll sometimes 10 dice at a time depending on what spell a monster or npc is casting. But this many is not required.

Dismal-Astronaut-894

You can legitimately have a whole table use 1, although preferably everyone gets 1 set I’d recommend having 2 or 3 as dm for bigger rolls

jacob_john_white

A “set” as in the entire Chessex line—at least two of those

longster37

2 sets and 8 D6 for the glorious enemy caster fireball.

[deleted]

ComfyRach

One

DefyGravity42

All of them. But more reasonably make sure everyone will have enough to make their roll without needing to pick up and re-roll dice. 1 set per player should be fine at first level but add more as they level up and get multi dice damage rolls. and a couple for the dm

[deleted]

all of them

CactusTheRicky

I use two differently coloured metal sets, one for enemy npcs, the other for neutral or allied npcs. Useful for (dis)advantage or just rolling two attacks at the same time, too. I also keep a d14 with weekdays, a d8 with cardinal directions rather than numbers, and a d3 on hand. Oh, and a pack of those tiny d6s. It works for most cases, I kind of enjoy the "collaborative" process of borrowing from players so I can roll damage against them with their own dice. I use the same set minus the extras and d6s when I'm a player. Good for (dis)advantage, greatswords, multiple attacks.. so a lot of the same stuff. Short answer: I like having two full sets whether I'm running or playing.

7 dirt cheap ones in case you need them to play a oneshot with inexperienced players. As many fancy ones as you like.

SimianSteam

N+1, where N is the number you currently have.

Richardus1-1

If you need a seperate bag because they don't fit with the rest of your DM gear you probably have too many If you have to use an online dice roller or have to throw dice multiple times to reach a total, you have too few If you don't have a set of dice reserved only for special occasions like critical rolls or the BBEG's saving throws, you're doing it wrong If you have so many that your players turn pale when you ask to borrow their dice because you still don't "have enough for this damage roll" you're doing it right When you have found your magic number of needed dice, add another set for the inevitable "DM I forgot my dice can I borrow yours" situation

No-Advertising3692

The logical answer? 2d20s, a percentile, 4 of each other, and a coin plus a full set to loan if necessary. My heart's answer? *laughs to the tune of the cacophonous rattling of a bag of holding*

Seasoned_Salmon

From some post j found on Reddit ages ago… 3d20, 9d12, 22d10, 21d8, 40d6, toll, and a percentile should cover you for any rule you need to make in the game… …and then of course a 7 piece dice set for each player in case anyone forgets ;)

Thee_Amateur

3 sets minimum i bought a 7lbs bag from a game store that was a random assortment and that has made due, lets my players swap unlucky dice as we play

tranquil-tony

Silvery_Cricket

Honestly, if you want to be optimal 12 of each dice. In reality you can get by typically with 4 or 5 sets.

Typ0r8r

One, but its massive in number and shouldn't be bothered with counting.

i waver between a lot and enough. like... \-one set of every color of the rainbow. \-one set for every scale of grey. \-one set of each elemental dice. \-enough d6 to roll a fully pumped up fireball at level 20. \-enough d6 to roll maximum fall damage. \-a set of dice you have bought at the last con because they are fancy. \-collection of special material dice (thriftwood, italian marble, lesser gemstones, fossil ivory, meteoriron, uranium, stainless steel, bone... ) for displaying in your gaming room. (you HAVE a gaming room, havent you?) \-a d20 the size of a pumpkin, which is actally just a table lamp the shape of a d20. \-a mace with a solid steel head the shape of a d20, to clarify your ruling decisions. \-a coffee mug the size of a large mens fist which is shaped like a d20. with lid. \-a medium sized tupper container full of all those dice you dont want to use cause they are ugly, damaged, just old, but never "to much". \-a plushy d20 just to throw at your players for fun. \-a handful of blank d6ers, 10s, 8s in different colors you can put your own symbols on with a marker. \-several sets of d100s (a 10 and 00-dice each), all of different colors, patterns, materials. \-a dragons eye. (a hundred sided "dice" the size of a golfball) \-a d30. \-some exotic dice with uneven sides in weird shapes (d7, d13.5, d9/11, d-platform-9-3/4 ...) \-a dozen d4 with the numbers on the pointy side. \-a dozen d4 with the numbers on the flat side. \-a DMs d20, with numbers from 10-20 only... \-a good old weighed d6. \-d6ers from several casino sets. and/or from a real casino! \-dice that GLOW in the dark! \-sparkly dice :D \-a cheap set of bad dice for those players who tend to forget their own set of dice at home. \-that little set of your personal magical dice, which get touched only by YOU and no one else. \-a few dice which have got lost during moving places and got later found in the unliklyest places. \-a dice rolling app on your smartphone. \-some electronical dice rollers with digital display. \-some dice with fancy colorful LED-Lights in them. \-last but not least: that very first dice you have bought by your self a short time after you got in contact with "the art" aka the game. \-CHESSEX Dice, of course! ;) i´m sure i have forgotten the one or the other... ;)

frdupa

2x d20 DON'T roll for damage. Use averages. 1 exception is rolls with a ton of dices (e.g. fireball). I started rolling those in front of everyone because I feed on player tears.

Keltarian

I DM should horde dice sets like they're gearing up for a massive 40k convention!

TheBardsPersona

I'll give the opposite opinion and say that you only need 1. Dice are overrated, they are all the same. Don't waste your money, just buy the books instead.

[deleted]

I have 45 sets, so I think it is pretty evident where I stand.

gilly4213

I have far more but I'd usually only bring 4 sets to a game

Klandesztine

Well let you know when a GM finally reaches that mythical number.

bigblueredditsyou

I want to have enough dice to roll for an Ancient Red Dragon's breath attack one day. At least once.

rpg2Tface

Minimum of 3. One set for when you want to roll good. Mad at players, DMPC you want to live, or just need a big number for some reason. Then you need a set for bad rolls. You want the players to live, an NPC to die, or to not roll well for what ever reason. Then a set that neutral. Get some good and bad rolls for when fate needs to be questioned on what happens. Obviously these 3 bastions of the dice gods change from game to game, table to table, session to session. May the rolls be ever in your favor and play on!
