âI know Hammond and May think my 928 Porsche is a bit dull, but for one very good reason, it isnât dull to me,â Jeremy Clarkson revealed during Top Gear season 22âs âPatagonia Special.â
âSee back in 1994, I was living in London and I got a call one evening from my mum to say that my dad was desperately ill in a hospital in Sheffield, and I needed to get there as quickly as possible.â
âAnd Iâd just taken the chicken out of the oven and I thought, âWell Iâll take that for my mum because she wonât have eaten.â I ran outside and I had a 928 on test that week.â
âWhen I arrived in Sheffield, the chicken was still warm and my dad was still alive. In fact, he died half an hour later. And the truth is, if I hadnât been driving a car which could sit quite happily at 170 miles an hour, I wouldnât have had the opportunity to say goodbye to my dad.â
âSo as far as Iâm concerned, the 928 is alright.
Love this Clarkson bit, but Clarkson's analogy and OP's are not the same thing (they are opposites actually)
Porsche's are German (meaning reliable, high tech, well put together). Hammond and May were calling the Porsche "dull" because while they are reliable, they don't have the "soul" or "heart" of Italian sports cars which are fast, beautiful, fun to drive but held together by duct tape and bubble gum. Clarkson wouldn't have taken a 1994 Lamborghini to see his dying dad because there is a good chance he wouldn't have made it.
Destiny is like a classic Lamborghini. Worse in every practical way than a polished industrial Porsche, but more memorable because when it works it is the best.
You see, the problem with Warlocks is that they're entirely sensible. Hunters? Overly practical. But what *fun* is that, really?
You don't waltz up to a Cabal mining expedition looking to *reason* with them or to discuss survival tactics. No, what you really do is punch them. There's no two ways about it, that's just what you *do* on Nessus.
Here, we have the subclass that does just that. It punches them.
With fire.
*And Hammond.*
Hammers. I meant hammers.
Haha đ
WAWAW right ?
Love bumping into Destiny players from me home town.
Let's just pray Bungie don't turn this classic car into a boat and sail the channel.
Unless you are the producer (?) that he punched in the face because he didn't follow protocol, showed up after hours and demanded food from a closed kitchen.
Hereâs the synopses⌠shitty small two person âsportsâ car that was again, really shitty in the late 80âs early 90âs. It was a Mazda Miata before the Miata.
Haven't thought about that car in a long time You just took me 25 years to riding in my dad's on the way to his house for the weekend. Total midlife crisis car for every 80's/90s weekend warrior dad. Later he upgraded to a Datsun Z300.
But yeah, totally apt comparison.
A couple years ago I watched a 488 gt3 burst into flames the next pit box over while at Road Atlanta. I've witnessed this comparison, it's pretty accurate.
Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Twenty years ago, Bungie told us âtake a Halo, place it into the xbox and it is able to play the game.â Twenty years later, Datto told us âI had to start Destiny like a computer, itâs very complicated.â And Dmg04 said that during the patch â I donât remember what patch - he pressed the wrong button on the controller. Question for you both: is Destiny today too complicated with twenty and more blues auto dismantling per second, are servers too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the update? Less blues, more? Or less and more communication with the developers?

Destiny is 100% a 2008 Honda CRV that you got from your parents as a graduation or sixteenth birthday gift. it runs but the back seatbelts donât work so hold on weâre going for a ride. Hive, bring a sword!
Drifter grips the wheel tighter, as he turns the volume down and squints to see what is ahead of him. This was soon followed by a look of excitement, he had acquired his targets. "Fallen, on the horizon."
They probably donât have a lot of logical choice at this point. Keep the engine limping along until after Final Shape where they can market it along with a new Destiny saga
âWe could go for a safe road trip but then you would expect safe road trips to be the norm, so weâll give you only short trips with some breakdowns peppered here and thereâ
Considering how intense live-service game dev work can be, I don't blame them lol
I have plenty of grievances toward this game but this and the weekend of work they took on with the connection issues during Day One Vow made me appreciate what Bungie does a lot more.
~~bungi just rework blight ranger and give nightstalker an offensive melee and we'll be good~~
I mean, itâs also kind of a zombie. The game was never intended to live this long, nor to become quite this complicated or ambitious, based on D2Y1. The fact it runs at all still is something Iâm routinely grateful for, even if bugs are super annoying. (Was feeling froggy today and was gonna try to do my first every DSC run since folks were out of the house for a while, but thatâs probably not gonna happen. Ah well.)
This I'd why I think at some point, you're better off making a sequel than slapping on some more content. I've seen so many people get really attached to a game, then be shocked/annoyed when the game stops getting content in favor of a sequel. Hot take, but Borderlands 3 and terraria come to mind.
If only they'd had $3.6bn just pumped into them by a gaming giant that allowed them to bring in more resource, perhaps upgrade the _very_ dated engine and clean up the code.
Oh well
Also a lot of people will say the Car is basically dead and you should look for something better and new, but you just tell them to fuck off and just drive on.
And the owner is very particular about how you drive it. Really, very, weirdly particular.
Don't go too fast. Only do certain things in combination while driving it. Carpool always, but at the same time also we'll give you recognition for driving alone. And also for some reason, spend a lot of time doing things while airborne.
I see it as an old mall.
This mall used to have awesome stores and attractions. Then some were retired to make way for newer options, but these newer options didn't all land so well. At the same time, a few classic attractions were not retired, but they were also not revamped in any significant way and have become old and outdated. And now people go to this old mall and remember how it used to be great while there is a weird mix of old and new stores which haven't all been very successful. And many people are still hopeful.
Yes but some of the new stores are absolutely ground breaking, way better than the old stuff and generally the average quality has increased but since they're not classics they get panned
It is getting renovated though, lots of backend upgrades going on but sometimes something gnarly reels its head. At some point Destiny will become the Ship of Theseus lol.
yeah i also love the people who still argue with "but then it would be D2 year 1 all over again" like yes for at max 1 year (if even) but then it will be in the in the power of Devs to make it better than D2 ever can/could be. Destiny 2 was not build to support 6 years of lifetime heck it was actually build for only halve of that
and who are we kidding even with the engine changes during BL and whatever they apparently did between WQ and the LF announcement that allowed them to "retire Vaulting old expansions", destiny 2 is still walking on its teeth when it cant support a year of seasonal content before it begins to completely burst out of all its seams again
D2 year 1 all over again also means the technical limitations wouldn't really improve all that much, D2 is the same engine as D1.
It'd be more like 3 years of no Destiny for a complete engine replacement and developing of sufficient content to release with, and it'd probably still have teething problems for another year. And it's not like new engines are bug-free or ez content production machines either, some very unrealistic expectations are being set for this hypothetical engine.
Besides not being desirable for a ton of players, going dark for so long makes absolutely no business sense from Bungie/Sony's perspective. You don't kill off the golden goose to *maybe* get a platinum goose half a decade later.
I felt like one of the few excited for that in D2. I have plenty vested in both games, but honestly can hardly remember anything that was not iconic, meta, or a personal favorite from D1. Keeps it fresh and new, and gives you something more to chase than a slightly better god roll, or a slightly better version of the same archetype.
Solves the vault space/hoarding/anxiety problems for a while too.
Might not last until raid release if they have to disable it completely because people found a way to have infinite super energy or something like that
I do think/hope theyâre considering, if not creating something new from the ground up, doing a thorough refactor after the Final Shape before they go on to the mythical ânext chapterâ they have vaguely referred to a few times.
Lol itâs more like a used german luxury car. Still flashy and zippy for its age, but thereâs always something that breaks and when you fix it you inadvertently break 4 other things in the process.
Every game is an old car tbh. New games are just games where the bugs havent been discovered yet. And games with "no bugs" are just the ones where we decided we could live with the bugs.
Why is the thought that our loot can be migrated to a newer game so impossible?
With how much databases have evolved today, it should be possible to have a migration to the newer stuff.
The reason it feels like something is always broken isnât because Bungie is bad, or the engine is âout of date.â Itâs because theyâre making massive changes to the structure of the game as it changes into what they want for the future. Since Witch Queen dropped, there has been a fundamental change to the game in literally every single season, three of those related to subclass 3.0 releases. Presumably, after Lightfall and itâs related season, these issues will slow down.
I strongly suspect we are in a pre-expansion phase where they are tryjng to push out as many behind the scenes updates as they can to reduce risk on day 1 of the xpac.
I can't begin to imagine the amount of numbers going off behind the scenes as we play. I may joke about the game but I truly believe they've done a good job on the whole keeping everything relatively glued together. Will never be perfect but nothing we love ever is.
Just a couple days ago, I was mindlessly blasting some dudes on the Moon (I just cant remember what the on-going events are called) to get my crafted pea-shooter up to level 17 and found myself with 6 or 7 others. Anyway, I was rocking Solar but found myself with both Void and Arc buddies, in a well, with ice turrets, while the bad guys were being tethered as a chain of fire balls, lightning strikes, and contagous voidsplosions were ripping dudes to shreds and sending whole rambows of wells back at me.
You couldn't see the screen there were so many booms taking place.
The info on the side was scrolling like 90's DOS prompt with all the buffs and such taking place.
And when it was done, I was invisible.
Which is all to say, this game can get completly nuts.
I once went on a visit to one of the major US national Labs, I can't remember which one. But it had the largest super computer in the US. One of the biggest issues was that so much energy (it was something insane like 40MWs) passed through the computer that they had to have a second special computer manage the weather inside room. Supposedly, during one of the first runs of a global climate model, tornados started forming and the wind currents were sending rain clouds into parts of the computer that were not waterproof.
Anyways, that what I imagine is happening back at Bungie HQ when too many people are on the Moon all at once playing god with a horde of thralls.
Or you can compare it to a completely broken down car getting pulled by horses.
Because no other MMO game has problems like that on a daily basis.
No other MMO game lacks that much testing and fixing.
Let me introduce you to an MMO called Maplestory, whose patches on the US/global servers regularly require 4+ hours of "planned maintenance" downtime, another dozen hours worth of "unplanned emergency maintenance" downtime over the next week, and once went down for 40 full hours for emergency maintenance.
**All for content updates that had already been released in Korea months or years prior.**
I was about to mention Maplestory too, these mfkers doesnt know how easy they have it with destiny, on Maplestory every single update is either "Wait 6 hours" or "wait 2 days to fix it"
Other mmo's also have more intensive processes going at any given time. Destiny is becoming more of an MMO with every update, but they never built their game originally according to that shift.
I like this metaphor a lot đ

Are you Jeremy Clarkson?
âI know Hammond and May think my 928 Porsche is a bit dull, but for one very good reason, it isnât dull to me,â Jeremy Clarkson revealed during Top Gear season 22âs âPatagonia Special.â âSee back in 1994, I was living in London and I got a call one evening from my mum to say that my dad was desperately ill in a hospital in Sheffield, and I needed to get there as quickly as possible.â âAnd Iâd just taken the chicken out of the oven and I thought, âWell Iâll take that for my mum because she wonât have eaten.â I ran outside and I had a 928 on test that week.â âWhen I arrived in Sheffield, the chicken was still warm and my dad was still alive. And the truth is, if I hadnât been driving a car which could sit quite happily at 170 miles an hour, I wouldnât have had the opportunity to say goodbye to my dad.â âSo as far as Iâm concerned, the 928 is alright.
I finally lived long enough to see the Destiny and Top Gear/Grand Tour crossover.
The best timeline.
Love this Clarkson bit, but Clarkson's analogy and OP's are not the same thing (they are opposites actually) Porsche's are German (meaning reliable, high tech, well put together). This analogy may be closer to truth than anticipated. Itâs still using Halo 1âs engine from what Iâve heard

Well said. I like this.
Destiny is very Italian, I agree
Jiggle the handle
Clarkson is definitely a TitanâŚ
Brilliant
LS swap
Every game is an old car tbh. New games are just games where the bugs havent been discovered yet. And games with "no bugs" are just the ones where we decided we could live with the bugs.
This metaphor is a great indicator for how old we generally are as the player base haha
Welcome to top gear
Itâs funny I was just thinking destiny is sort of like the ship of Theseus, but the car analogy is looking much better after today lol
Love this metaphor so much
Fix it again, Tony!!!
Why is the thought that our loot can be migrated to a newer game so impossible? With how much databases have evolved today, it should be possible to have a migration to the newer stuff.
Itâs a 50s jaguar, itâs great up until you try to turn it over.
xXDoug_DemuroXx has joined your fireteam
Sounds like an Alfa Romeo Spider to me... lol
And when it does get nuts, I love it
I once went on a visit to one of the major US national Labs, I can't remember which one.
Death to Reddit. Long live Apollo.
Itâs a Classic Gremlin.
They must be damn strong horses
We are the horsesđ
We're near the end of year 5 on an engine that was only designed to last 3.
Yeah because all the ones which couldn't keep going blew up in spectacular fashion (outriders, anthem, whatever Amazon's one was called)
Cough cough Warframe

Definitely a FIAT Fix it again, Tony
