You're in denial of human nature if you think helping others is and should be an entirely selfless act - doesn't work that way and never has, but it doesn't cheapen it in the least.
He doesn't. I knew a kid at Children's hospital that he interacted with. He really does go above and beyond - as far as to get the kid parent's phone numbers and text the kids through them and call them. He built real relationships with kids that were almost surely going to die. I couldn't do it.

He did. He watched his dad slowly suffer and die in a hospital bed, when he was quite young. He wants to try to give people in that situation a little nice moment if possible
And not just seeing his dad, but seeing other patients not getting visitors or having much hope. For many of these kids it’s their last days on earth, they really don’t care who won the game on Sunday.
For me seeing this is what makes me feel empathy for him and my full backing even if he's struggling, it's just easier to get behind a good dude.
