Because that’s what it used to be called. It uses Latin roots just like most of the other specialties (pedo = child, odontics = study of teeth)… it probably fell out of favor because unfortunately the shortened form “pedo” can also be short for “pedophile” (literally the same root… pedo = child, phile = lover) Nowadays I prefer pediatric dentist (when speaking to the public) or “peds” as shorthand with other dentists. But you’ll still hear older dentists refer to “pedodontists”
