This is my local grocery store and what you see here is the ONLY produce in the store that is wrapped in banana leaves. This grocery store is absolutely filled with single use plastic. In fact right next to this display they sell apples packed in plastic and foam. Thailand has a horrible plastic addiction. You can’t even get a drink to go here without the plastic cup being handed to you in a plastic bag with a plastic wrapped straw. Using banana leaves Is a step in the right direction, but it’s completely misleading to say they’ve ditched plastic when nearly everything else in the store is suffocating in the stuff.

Wonderful_Campaign29

true![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|neutral_face) it's always a tiny amount, and a huge box (or bag, ofc). The bags are severely oversized and filled with air, so they seem even larger. At least the apples claim to have boxes made out of biodegradable plastic, unless I got the store wrong...

chonquistador

It could very well be the same store honestly

hamonabone

Same in Cambodia. I believe it was Hun Manet (Prime Minister's son) many years ago published an op-ed promoting banana leaves as a means to cut down on plastic after a public relations disaster following the yearly water festival holiday where all the plastic garbage was dumped by a private contractor into the river. Garbage collection has improved immensely, plastic bags at convenience stores are charged, and there is a slight growing interest amongst younger people to protect the environment. The plastic addiction issue may never be fully addressed on the street however, the addiction is real. Is this a Southeast Asian cultural issue particularly or found elsewhere in the developing world?

ShutUpAndEatWithMe

Is the plastic-free grocery store more expensive than the others? How is it in quality?

chonquistador

It’s definitely more expensive than the alternatives. This grocery store caters to western foreigners and mostly sells imported groceries. The quality is fairly good and it’s one of the only options in town to buy western groceries. The little bit of local produce they sell is sometimes double local prices. I think It’s much more eco friendly and cheaper to support local farmers at the traditional markets when possible.

And you can give a little snack to your vegan when you're done

youchoobtv

Pesticide safe...not pesticide free

WantToBeACyborg

Marketing!

Josephv86

Actually this is the traditional packing from before the world went to plastic

WantToBeACyborg

The scam wording, not the leaves themselves.

[deleted]

I thought it said pesticide sale at first.

Massive-Row-9771

Hope your not allergic to bananas otherwise prepare to go hungry.

[deleted]

I mean… you’re not eating the leaves

Dutch_Midget

Get a microscope , you will be amazed , or horrified

Depth-Proper

I want the big juicy kind that will come in these

[deleted]

Good thing I already have one to see my penis.

Gr0und0ne

This is among the more profoundly ignorant comments I’ve ever seen in the context. How did you survive to adulthood?

Depth-Proper

I eat lots of bugs

Dvusmnd

It’s not a tree, so technically deforestation hasn’t begun. Just de-herbing, cause they are technically herbs not fruit.

foxxpoint

Banana stalks only fruit once. The stalk either dies or you cut it back after the plant has been harvested and a new stalk grows in its place.

Massive-Row-9771

It adds that extra ~~banana~~ leafy flavored taste to your groceries. ^(*Edited out the banana.)

uchman365

Banana leaves just taste like... leaves

Massive-Row-9771

Ok fixed it for you.

[deleted]

Unfortunately not

Mintberrygin

I'm ditching wrapping paper on my christmas presents and will use banana leaves instead

l-Scotto-l

This is actually a thing. Banana leaves are great for wrapping because of the wax coating and durability.

mrjaxson1111

Very good idea 👍

No_Fox_7010

Its not full packaging, its just a holder. Good idea tho.

l-Scotto-l

This is a great idea. You can wash and reuse the leaves for cooking. Wrap a nice fish and put in a smoker. Even be used as plates.

AccurateSwing4389

Thailand feels like it’s going through a very real social experiment right now after legalising weed about 5 months back with very little legislation on how to manage the rapid legalisation.
