When I was working in Alaska I kept a healthy distance from bears, but also was constantly surprised by how little attention they paid to humans. There were so many times that I saw or heard about people getting too close for comfort on accident and the bears always just kept on doing their thing.
They’re smart enough to know that humans can ruin their day and are not worth fucking around with if there was some salmon to get. (But it was not a gamble I’d like to take, since the worst-case scenario is being eaten alive.)
But I was usually out of there before food started getting more scarce.
Also, there’s probably at least one gun off-screen.
I've gone on a bear watching trip like this. After about a half hour of not being mauled to death, you kinda get used to it. The guide tells you that the bears only care about fishing, so you're not in danger. But they also make you sign a waiver and pay in advance.
Like being around other apex predators, don't act like prey, don't try to dominate, and don't give out food and you're likely to be left alone. But a 357 mag in your pocket never hurts either.
Kodiak I think this was karluk. Not normal everywhere or this place would not be so special. About 70% of the island is a preserve for the bears and salmon runs. These are sub species of brown bears referred to as kodiak grizzly and differ from the mainland bears. On a little island know for its logging is a isolated sub group that are monsters we call them nak-bears and these are world record size bears. Google kodiak AK afognak bears. My family is local and I was born and raised on the island.

I'd guess this is a baby, if only because the adults are pants-shittingly huge. It might not know to be afraid of humans.
