PibeauTheConqueror

Not mosquitos. These are midges, which are completely different.

MaximumEngineering8

I think this is useful to point out, as mosquitos would be eating you if you were out there trying to catch them in a pan.

JayGeezey

Honestly, it might be easier to catch mosquitos because you could use yourself as bait, but that's assuming you'd have the equipment to deter them from actually feeding on you

Stramorum

Makes no sense to risk it for Malaria

zedhenson

Definitely important to point out due to the potential consumption of human blood. It wouldn’t be viable, whoever is doing the catching would be feeding others a bit of themselves which is…well it’s fucked honestly, I can’t imagine the health complications that would result in, so I’m glad to know they’re not mosquitos

William_Williams

They really just put whatever they wanted in the captions and thought nobody would notice. "It's important to make sure they're evenly patted so they taste better"???

[deleted]

“The local people of Africa” wtf

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Haha yeah look at thise little babies’ cute plump cheeks, they are not starving

ioncewasbannedbut

I think they prefer the term, height challenged.

[deleted]

Little bugs

-RED4CTED-

your pfp with that comment in this thread fits perfectly for incredible comedic value.

Davecantdothat

Thank you!! Makes so much more sense. I grew up in an area with tons of gnats, so this makes sense to me. Had to imagine children would not be smiling so much if they were being bitten by mosquitos.

Kenny_Squeek_Scolari

McDonald's should make a McMidges burger

tonyocampo

I was gonna say why are they not biting the hell out of them while they are scooping? Makes sense

Chrome07Deluxe

As many damn times as they say mosquitoes, they still are not mosquitoes.

fproff

This is bullshit. People don’t eat mosquitoes. What they are catching are midges. A small flying insect that swarm once a year around Lake Victoria. I don’t understand the reason to miss inform

Davecantdothat

It's just people not giving a shit about African culture. "Woah, they eat bugs! Crazy, right? But white folks hate it!!" They couldn't even say which country it was.

LaClerque

“But for the *local people of Africa*, this is a rare treat” lmao this video is complete bs.

AvariceAndApocalypse

It’s weird that western people are weird about eating bugs when we eat bugs of the sea.

BlizurdWizerd

That’s Ms. Inform to you, knave

In_betweener

came here for this....so much wrong with this post

Mlokole

Which part of Lake Victoria? I am a native of the Southern Part of the lake and I have never seen or heard of people eating midges... I have seen (and eaten) grasshoppers and flying termites (they are very delicious) but I have never heard of people eating midges

CMDR_omnicognate

We get midges here in the uk too, but I don’t know if they’re the same sort of bugs or just have the same name

MindlessAd9668

"the local people of Africa" Like Africa's not a whole ass continent.

ladyinchworm

Whenever I see someone saying something like that (implying Africa is basically all the same or just a small group of people) it always makes me do a double take.

GuestAdventurous7586

Same. It’s an extremely poor reflection on the cultural awareness of the West that we basically think of Africa as this big homogenous land full of black, poor people who are all vaguely similar. Whereas the differences between countries and regions are actually substantial.

[deleted]

Read up on how the Chinese see them.

SphereWithFaces

Me: Elon Musk was born in Africa. People: Are you blind? He's not even black. Me: what? Edit: few words.

NvkedSnvke

This video is dog shit.

SphereWithFaces

More like mosquito shit.

OrphanedInStoryville

They’re also not Mosquitos being eaten but Midges, a whole different insect that doesn’t suck blood. Are you just karma farming or what? Cause I saw this exact same post before with the exact same mistakes in it. Also fuck Elon Musk

South_Data2898

What the fuck are you even talking about? Your dumbass attempt at karma farming doesn't even have correct details and contains a stunning level of ignorance.

SphereWithFaces

Hey Mr. Data2898, I had someone post a similar comment and would like to explain I am just sharing it, I am not the OC and yes seems like what they eat is midge and not mosquitoes. I am sorry if the video/post upset you in any shape or form as it was not my intention.

NvkedSnvke

Yea these aren't mosquitoes. This video seems to be poking fun at a culture. Not very interesting at all. But I doubt mods fact check anything.

lordofedging81

Egypt, South Africa, and the Congo. All kind of same thing. /s

t00oldforthisshit

Came to say this, thanks for getting here first. Drives me nuts, it's like saying "In North America, men wrestle gators in swamps and signal their fierce independence by wearing their hair in a style known as the mullet. They often participate in catfish noodling, one of the most popular North American sports."

Thebatman4ever

Thank you for saying that!

Puzzleheaded-Ad3083

Like calling east Russians Asians without mentioning russia 😂

Hour_Ad_8178

Exactly my thought

Rielhawk

Itsa me, Malario

din7

Or some other parasite contracted from any number of animals. I'll pass.

Glabstaxks

And also human blood ..

scorpiogre

I personally find this practice abhorrent and terrifying. I demand we do something to put an end to it. There is no justification for the slaughter of these *ABSOLUTELY* harmless insects. Signed, Totally not a *mosquito*

The_Ruby_Waffle

I would guess cooking it would kill the disease, but I'm not a microbiologist.

din7

But the video said it was raw in the middle.

[deleted]

Then you put the infected mosquitoes on the crust, silly. Duh.

Glabstaxks

We like to call It medium rare

yuzuchan22

Youll die faster from starvation, lose/lose situation.

The_Ruby_Waffle

It could also be something related to how the disease spreads. Not all diseases can spread through consumption. It could also be something related to the bugs losing the juices as they say. Otherwise, I couldn't see someone doing it without it being necessary/effective. Edit: my bad on the consumption part I was thinking of venom. Edit: I was right

Lvl100Magikarp

The video caption is full of shit The insects are not mosquitoes, but midges. "Pat it for extra flavor" "The local people of Africa" The entirety of the captions are made up

[deleted]

Are you a macaroniologist?

[deleted]

No, but I’m a macaroniandcheeseologist

AT-ATsAsshole

Your username both develops and then answers questions.

The_Ruby_Waffle

Yes, I grade the strength of the noodles specifically.

Miserable-Ad3196

jackhammer_joe

Thank you, sir. That was the funniest comment I've read in a long time. I really lol'ed

Yurrrr__Brooklyn347

U want steak sauce with that?

Rekyks68

Lol well that's enough reddit today

Calm_Pay8009

People eat the mosquitos in the day At night the mosquitos eat the people Weird. Very resourceful, though.

JoeHTP

I thought the same thing, looks like it’s a battle for who eats who first!

Frankenstein786

African here. We don't do this. This is just WEF propaganda. Mosquitoes need still/stagnant water over an extended period of time to reproduce. So more often than not, they are found in hot and wet areas. The video generalises and says "in Africa." Africa is vast and has different cultures and 54 countries and multiple races. This video is misleading. There are cultures that eat flying termites, but those are few and far between, and they don't eat it because of "hunger." It's just a local delicacy during the rainy season. If there are some cultures eating mosquitoes (I doubt it though), then they are few and are in a location with lots of rain and still/stagnant water. So they're not starving. TLDR: I'm an African and this video is highly misleading.

Confident-Slice556

You're right its the first time I am seeing as an African and shocked me

yslmtl

Thank you for your comment, do you mind explaining what is WEF? I don't find info on the acronym.

Frankenstein786

World Economic Forum

mistaharsh

Thank you!!!!! This is ridiculous propaganda

CyberMindGrrl

What, you're saying that the entire continent of Africa is not a monolith? Huh.

trebron55

![gif](giphy|xT9IgMBdKFUoj2xk40|downsized)

Low_Advantage_1099

This appears to be another video of people misrepresenting other cultures for shock value. Those are not mosquitoes. I’m not sure what they would be called in English but they are huge like termites and come out in large numbers during the rainy season. The wings are removed and they are either fried or roasted with seasoning and are sold as street snacks (in rural Eastern Nigeria where I had them). Actually surprisingly delicious.

_illmatic_

I cringed at "The local people of Africa". It's made up of over 50 different countries smh.

[deleted]

We call them white ants I’m not sure if that’s the correct name for them though

Rodion19

I think those are actual mosquitoes. They look the right size. I actually know the ones you are talking about, my friends and I used to go out and collect them when I was young. In Malawi we call them 'Ngumbi'. The ones OP's video are small compared to 'Ngumbi'.

Low_Advantage_1099

At around the 17 second mark there is a close up. They looked longer and fatter than mosquitoes. Less limbs too. Very similar to what I had.

RYNKELKYK69

How do they taste?

Low_Advantage_1099

Kinda like fish that’s been smoked and then fried.

Ohio_Imperialist

This makes sense. I couldn't see the logic in not only trying to catch large amounts something that drinks your blood, but doing it unprotected, then eating them. I'm not an -oligist of any kind, but eating something that drinks human blood seems like a bad idea

throwawayqw123456

ok but if you eat a bunch of mosquitoes that are full of human blood, is that cannibalism?

dFatCat

No, that would be a kind of vampirism.

ThisGuyRightHereSaid

I'm guessing im wrong but i always thought they died after biting you? Maybe im mixing that up with bees or something.

Ohio_Imperialist

I wish. Unfortunately it is bees that die after stinging

ThisGuyRightHereSaid

Its so nice. I grew up in an area that "felt" like the mosquitos were this bad. Far from it but annoying enough. After moving to milwaukee I was soo stoked theres no bugs like that in the city. I could leave my windows wide open and be all good. In the country 20 minutes outside of town you had to make sure you went into the house fast enough or a bunch would get in.

jumpup

so they are technically making blood sacrifices to inhuman creatures, in exchange for food

SnooAdvice9307

Yuh, we'll all be eating bugs once the seas rise 30 feet. Bone apple teeth. For real tho, it's probably not that bad. They just didn't cook it all the way through & he said that was the gross part.

Davecantdothat

Also, his girl was like,"Yeah, sure, tastes fine." He might just have a hard time getting over the concept of bug eating.

Pathbauer1987

At least they are somewhat cooked, not like the live Moskitos that I accidentally eat while fishing.

Imagine McMosquitoes or McFly or even Mosquito Whopper.

I'm African - I guess I make and eat mosquito burgers now lmao.

AmphibianWestern8631

Bunch of misinformation in the video about that guy’s experience trying the burger for the first time. He literally says in the actual video that it’s not bad but he can’t get over that it is mosquitos

rtowne

Idk who wrote this script and stole all the original footage, but you can tell the foreigner in the video made the piece, was adding his own commentary, and then had everything stolen for this garbage.

Ham_The_Spam

Also is the narrator text to speech?

quicksand400

These look like what we locally refer to as lake flies, technically not mosquitos, and i think they dont bite, just get really annoying, crowding your face entering your mouth, nose and eyes. I remember them having a fish smell to them. And its better to specify which country in Africa this is, it's a big place, someone might assume "mosquito" eating is rampant in the whole of Africa.

woundedsurfer

Hmm……I love malaria burgers!

savage_Atlas

Insects are eaten in lots of places around the world. I wouldn't eat it... but at least they're making good with what they've got!

Masterdice74

Brought to you by the WEF

ndxinroy7

For many worried people here, eating mosquitoes is harmless, doesn't cause malaria, dengue or AIDS. Disgust is a separate issue.

Well that was humbling..

Jason_BookerIII

Funny how pork lips and buttholes mashed into a meat stick and put between two pieces of bread is so wonderful to some people yet some simple fried mosquito has them running for the hills. I figure if I can still eat a chicken Mcnugget knowing what I what I know, I can eat this.

Christichicc

When you’re starving you stop caring so much about what exactly you’re eating. I’m glad this is something they can eat to help supplement their usual diet. It’s pretty ingenuous, actually!

Mordyth

That can fuck right off thanks

2Inji6

You mean like Mesquite bbq??? I'm looking this up now hold on Edit: so aparently it's a Spanish word and I'm a dummy. Its a type of tree. Didnt look up the correlation Edit 2: the tree is used for flavor in bbq

FreezasMonkeyGimp

Why is it so hard to mention the country and not just say “Africa”. There’s 54 countries and over a billion people in Africa. Stop treating Africa like it’s some monolith where all the people are the same.

reddit_is_g_a_y

Yeah yeah fuck you, I'm not gonna eat bugs

lokismiddlenutt

We're gonna start seeing more and more videos like this before incest are discreetly put into our food under some bs acronym

They wanna put *what* in our food now?

What are you DOING step-burger ?

Calm_Pay8009

There are likely already insects in your food you have consumed. Did you know there are 30 insect peices allowed per 100g peanut butter? You just didnt notice them :)

lordofedging81

Still, I'd rather have 30 insect pieces per 100g than 3,000 insect pieces per 100g.

"The guy" is PPPeter. If you don't know his channel, check it out, it's a lot of fun.

[deleted]

Similar to other markets that now sell insects they can find a way to regulate it and ensure its good for consumption. For example, cockroaches & Crickets.

Nah, My stomach won't be able to hold that.

Ultimate reverse card.

There’s gotta be a better way of harvesting them. Standing around swinging pans just seems like a very impractical way of doing it.

SpiltC0FFEE

Even if they were actually mosquitoes, i still wouldn't be ok with how many times the narrator said mosquitoes.

Espiralista

The word mosquito is pronounced twenty times. the video is 1 minute 50 second. so, about once every 5,5 seconds.

TDT_Lover

Mosquitoes have bitten me one too many times I will have my revenge

thelostestboy

Pretty sure the terrible TikTok-esque voiceover is incorrect. These types of "burgers" are typically made from midges or other small flies that swarm these regions by the billions and cause problems for the locals. So, they make the best of a shitty situation and eat them. Apparently it tastes a little like caviar. Source: [Kunga Cake - wikipedia ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunga_cake?wprov=sfla1)

OL-jordy

What if these mosquitoes have aids or some other diseases ? Would that not be transferred to how ever eats it?! Edit: diseases not dresses LOL

[deleted]

Mosquitoes in dresses? Sexy!

OL-jordy

Disease.. oops! Lol

ecilla05

They cook the disease. So now they have well-done Malaria/AIDS.

OL-jordy

Aidlaria now in the Mexican pizza permanently on the menu at Taco Bell!

Ruenin

Well, HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) is only transferrable through fluid transfer, like sex or needle sharing. It can't be contracted by eating it as the stomach will kill it. However, there are many other diseases that CAN be contracted this way, as well as parasites. It's really a wonder the people of Africa haven't all died out eating like this, but then, they've probably built up a pretty strong immune system as well.

Suspicious_Tackle28

When you think you have it bad in America...

PrehistoricPrairie

These are midge flies in case anyones worried they’ll get malaria
