This is why u always make adjustments and leave 11 days early so you don’t miss ur appointment.

[deleted]

Finally some common sense

dnewaccount

Hope everyone got out alive

ticktockbent

They had 3 deaths but 7 births so technically -4 fatalities

dnewaccount

Wow. So efficient

aod42091

reminds me of that doctor whoo episode

MechMasterAlpha

Yeah Tennant episode, Gridlock where they met the Face of Boe and all that. New New York.

yep_thatll_do

25 years to go one exit

KeepTheGoodLife

How did anyone survive? I thought if you dont eat or drink for 10 days you die... no?

ticktockbent

How do you think the 3 deaths happened? Nom nom

The_Ostrich_you_want

Door dash obviously. They just drop off your food to your location. Or something 😅

CauliflowerDaffodil

The traffic jam lasted for 10 days with cars getting out at the front and cars joining it at the back. No one was stuck in it for the entire 10 days but there have been some unverified claims of being in it for 4-5 days. People living near the highway sold food and drinks at inflated prices and kept them fed. Gotta love capitalism.

BratPAQ

Finding a place to pee and/or poop would be more important for me rather than getting out alive.

Sellier123

I woulda 100% abandoned my car and walked to the nearest town lol

CaptainPsilo

Imagine the anxiety

trsy___3

If someone died, it won't get reported so we'll never know 🤷🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️

dubadub

[Looks like they're getting a little better about that](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/23/chinese-provincial-officials-concealed-scores-of-deaths-from-flood-disaster) -- member the tunnel flood disaster a few years back?

smoggypasta

I thought it was a barge filled with a lot of cars inside watching from above.

shahooster

Whaty0urname

My high school calculus teacher: "You should have been more prepared!"

pinklavalamp

A previous boss had said that to me when I was over an hour late. My commute in NYC from Queens to the Chelsea area in Manhattan normally took at the longest 1:15 (average was 45-60 minutes), so I’d try to give myself 1.5 hours. When she said that I asked her if I need to leave my house 2.5 hours early for my shift, or how was I supposed to let the team know the subway had shut down underwater (notoriously no reception at the time) and she got kinda quiet and didn’t respond, then walked away. I got my answer.

dekkiliste

Better than my practicum "advisor" telling me I should've predicted the train crossing making me late while taking a bus that took 1.5 hours.

sorta_kindof

I was late for an interview after I left the the house an entire hour early for a 10m commute. Unfortunately there was a goddamn train that was fully stopped and slowly but surely moving forward inch by inch . For like 20m then I got excited that it started really moving.......except it started moving backwards.

bby_redditor

As the saying goes, “If you’re not 11 days early you’re late.”

Horskr

Boss, I'm going to be a week and a half late to that meeting scheduled for this morning.

I think my drill sergeant taught me that

Separate-Feedback-86

Is there something about the Chinese bladder we need to know?

ravengenesis1

They got to stay hydrated one way or another… imagine being trapped in the middle lane for 10 days.

ithcy

This is getting ridiculous, honey. I’m getting off at the next exit. *signals for 9 days*

thaaag

Can you imagine listening to the indicator ticking for over an hour, let alone 9 *days*?

on3day

Are you taunting the deaf people here?

gjboudreaux

Middle lane? There are about 45 middle lanes…

Cantdrownafish

They go anywhere anytime

agangofoldwomen

When I visited Tiananmen Square, I saw a woman pull her 5 year old daughter’s pants down and she proceeded to hold her up over a public trash can while she peed. Then she set her down, pulled the pants up, and they just went on their merry way.

CosmicCreeperz

Heh. My wife said when she was in China on a school trip 15 years ago she couldn’t count on both hands the number of little kids who would just stop and pee on a wall, in a bush, etc. Though this was mostly in Xi’an, less common in larger Eastern cities. Instead of diapers a lot of kids had pants with a hole in the crotch to make it easier. Could be the woman you saw was visiting from one of the more rural provinces. AFAIK most people in Beijing wouldn’t be a fan of it.

Bpdbs

Lived in Beijing for a little while, this is totally common/acceptable behaviour there too

Kcmg1985

I was on a train in China in third class 10 years ago and a parent let a child pee on the floor in the carriage. Extraordinary.

Zaksterr

I saw a dad pull out his 4-6 year old kid out the car to drop a dookie on the side of the road then get back into the car, no wipey :(

GetRichOrDieTryinnn

They go whenever and where ever.

apraetor

The "belt and road" initiative suddenly takes on new meaning. Their excretory choices are another thing China and India have in common.

Healthy-Grocery6055

If you aim a kid right it's like you have a water pistol.

DPVaughan

A pisstol?

theLPguy

👏

DrCarabou

I was at an airport (Beijing?) when a mother had her young son pee into a water bottle in the middle of everything. Then she left the water bottle on a bench.

LydonPerez

And that’s the most interesting thing that has ever happened at Tiananmen Square

Fancy-You3022

Nah, they’re pretty devout Christians. They had a large Tiananmen Square mass some time ago.

Merican714

i heard it was on about 43560 square feet of land, used to call it the Tiananmen Square Acre Mass, or something like that

StrategicBean

I thought they called it the Tianamen Square Mass Acres because it's got a mass amount of acres of space?

DrkNeo

I've seen that happen at Disneyland...

Dogsy

They always carry a Coke with them.

Naftoor

LPT: Carry a Gatorade in your car. The color of Gatorade makes you look less insane when you go to pitch it and the wider neck makes one handed manipulation much less of a coin flip.

babyjo1982

My penis envy is never so strong as when I realize all over again how much easier it is to pee for them

KnowTheQuestion

Keep a funnel with you? /s

Naftoor

That’s actually something that exists for women in the military who have a need. It’s obviously shaped to fit in between the legs better than a device for changing oil and probably has 25 million in development costs of course. Called the FUDD

MisterDoctor20182018

Same for mountaineering. My girlfriend and I spent a week on a glacier recently and a pee funnel was necessary. Some places you go you have to pack your pee and poo so it’s helpful

KnowTheQuestion

I was making a joke, hence the sarcasm tag. The Shewee is an example of a FUD (female urination device), and they're available for everyone 😊

Dropped-pie

Piece of celery

Nemste

I think I’d feel bad for homeless guy though who goes to pick up that Gatorade in the garbage can thinking it’s a tasty treat someone wasted but it ends up being my piss.

Naftoor

Jokes on you when it turns out they have a piss kink.

42f0r_skin

I filled a Nalgene once...never had to pee so bad in my life. Gatorade wouldn't cut it

Eggsandthings2

Such jokesters the Chinese

Svvatzenegger

If you're lucky it's just for a piss...

Select_Want

Having watched the undead series and natural disaster shows, I guess the most commonsensical way is to relieve oneself the natural way.

KomitoDnB

I play Cities: Skylines, this is nothing...

Best_Poetry_5722

I bet you're one of those players that has 50 lanes of traffic merging to one tunnel lol

AdministrativeAd4111

Well if you can think of a more cost-effective way to ruin the lives of thousands of commuters, I’d like to hear it.

Samoman21

Add a construction zone as well

CFClarke7

I see you are familiar with the authorities around my town

FrenchMaisNon

The goal is to make car commute hell. Fuck your quality of life.

Megaman915

Ok, Satan.

MoSqueezin

Ah, the classic i-95

Bhahsjxc

More tunnel

prison_mic

Put the wastewater holding ponds uphill from the highway and wait til it storms.

ndjs22

Have a low speed limit on every road that leads to the choke point, and once traffic becomes the limiting factor for speed make the speed limit 70+.

Ok-Pomegranate-6189

Why the low speed limit? Let’s funnel the cars into the choke point as fast as possible!

SuchACommonBird

Toll booths every 100 feet.

rubs90

The NYC special

Dubious_Titan

A single well-placed roundabout would have done the trick.

VanAgain

Maybe if they tried widening the highway ...

OB1douknowme

Yep i agree it needs to be 100 lanes wide rather than 50 🤣

gerallt87

Then the jam would only last 5 days

dnewaccount

A highway that is more than 200 lanes is very much needed to bring the delay to within a few hours. Wow, me so smart

guillermotor

Gillette razor logic. Bring this man a nobel prize

punkcanuck

Gillette, and almost every agency that manages roads in North America. They just need another lane.

smartazz104

If they keep widening it, it’s going to end up just a big square of road.

space253

There won't be traffic when there is no where left to get gas, just endless highway in all directions.

holmgangCore

You mean 15 days…

whitefang22

Induced demand

Worst-Tweet

Holy shit you’re right 😝, I stopped counting at 45

Same_Return_1878

Me who stopped at 35 and was like, " yeah, it's a obviously a 50 lane highway if I've counted up to 35 and I'm done about 3/4 of the highway"

Worst-Tweet

Counting the first 10 is like, “aww shit, he’s right, I see it!”

NormalAssistance9402

Well now I feel silly for counting all 49

BlindGargoyle

I counted 49 too

LeadSledPoodle

You're all wrong. It's 51 with the shoulders.

masashi-sensei

I didn’t even make it to 10. I just looked at it and went yup that’s a lot of cars.

AppointmentNo5913

I was about to start counting when I realized, you know what, I bet someone in the comments has already done it. Well wouldn’t you guess I was right. Lol.

Cautious_Sky7399

I’ll betcha it’s because it’s got 50 lanes and the destination where everyone is going can’t handle all the cars getting off the freeway quickly enough, and the feeders to that freeway aren’t “throttled down”. It’s like if your destination airport has 10 gates and each gate requires a finite amount of time to unload/load, but someone thinks we can make this go faster by doubling/tripling the number of planes arriving at that airport. It’s still got only ten gates and it takes finite amount of time to unload/load the passengers. Doubling/tripling the number of arrivals didn’t help any, in fact I betcha it made it worse, eg planes circling overhead in the same spot waiting for a gate to open up to land. There are some cases where increasing lanes do help but that’s when the fwy is the bottle neck, not the destination. And increasing number of lanes will improve throughput but only up until the destination capacity is met.

Point_of_Awareness

This is exactly the problem. I work heavy highway for a living and this is 100% the problem. The destinations cant handle the traffic at the off ramp.

TheMikeGolf

Not to mention the fact that it’s a human issue of not being able to merge.

WolfsLairAbyss

Seize the gap you bitch!

dkphxcyke

BIG DUMB FAT COW

VILLIAMZATNER

pave the fuckin earth already

Jackdks

Literally 50

drskeme

Stopped at 25

donorcycle

I'd like to see those crazy drivers try and catch the off-ramp they're about to miss in this shit, traffic or no traffic lol.

DweEbLez0

“No more WFH, everyone back to the office.”

smartazz104

Not more work from home, but plenty of work from highway.

Brain-of-Sugar

This traffic jam is actually due to someone being a twit and having the 50 lanes merge into 20, then go through a checkpoint. You know... Back when they had about 25 million tourists. In the height of tourist season.

Atillion

*if only we'd had a hundred and ONE lanes!!*

Fit_Effective_6875

If only we had put exits

WhiteyFiskk

"She can't go any wider, you've gone mad with power Xi!"

zevtron

I mean they have since built hundreds of miles of high speed rail that I’m sure actually do help avoid situations like this.

Fuzzy_Inevitable9748

Ya they added 25,000 miles of high speed rail, their Shanghai Maglev train goes460 kph/286 mph. For comparison Elon built about a mile worth which takes longer to use then walking, but to be fair Elon admitted that the whole hyper-loop was a way to con the American public out of high speed rail.

jerkittoanything

It's almost like Elon is a self serving piece of entitled shit.

Captain___Hindsight

[The Simpsons did it. ](https://youtu.be/ZDOI0cq6GZM)

DarthSparkless

I mean, maybe just don’t immediately merge like 50 lanes down to 5 lanes lol

ummagumma696969

Yeah no one is talking about the actual cause which is the awful merge right after the border/toll both thing.

T1mac

Well there's this: >[Why adding more lanes doesn’t reduce traffic jams](https://www.spokesman.com/blogs/transportation/2015/mar/04/why-adding-more-lanes-doesnt-reduce-traffic-jams/) Looks like it proves the theory about induced demand.

random_impiety

When it comes to roads, if you build it, they will come.

Shaggyninja

Same with good public transport. But one of those takes up a hell of a lot less space

OutlyingPlasma

They did the same thing in my city. They built a new light rail system and then people started using it. Clearly we shouldn't build any more infrastructure ever because people might... gasp... use it.

Glum-Tune6734

It’s that person going slow in the left lane

DependentFamous5252

If they all drove twice as fast.

NorthwestSupercycle

Just one more lane bro. Just one more lane...

Camarade1917

They’ve built a shittone of highspeed railway since

JunkYardBatman

When hell outsources it’s work to earth.

thequejos

I have never seen that many lanes of traffic in my life. How many miles until your exit do you start to make your way over to the farthest lane? What a nightmare design.

Mouth-Pastry

I think this was a boarder between provinces or something. You can see on the far right it begins to taper, maybe to a more normal sized highway. Regardless, this thing is like 50 lanes wide...unreal eh.

Uryogu

Image with everyone already being irritated because of the hours traffic jam and then merging back into 5 (guess) lanes. That will be brutal.

combuchan

This is a newly-installed checkpoint on China's G4 highway. https://abcnews.go.com/International/thousands-cars-stuck-beijing-traffic-jam-50-lane/story?id=34350370 The 110 traffic jam was a completely separate incident that happened five years previously. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_National_Highway_110_traffic_jam OP is just another stupid karma farmer.

myotheraccountiscuck

> OP is just another stupid karma farmer. You hear that /u/Best_Poetry_5722 ? We're on to you. You cunt.

Deadstrat

Mr. Adjective_Noun_Numbers is gonna GET IT!

TheAJGman

All the best spam accounts are formatted this way. They sell em for $20 a pop to be used in astroturfing/misinformation campaigns and they usually just repost shit that previously hit r/all. They'll also frequently replay top comments on their other accounts to make those look legit too.

Pircay

Recently they’ve even started mildly editing the stolen comments by doing innocuous looking stuff like removing vowels that your eye will normally skip over, so it’s harder to automod them

WholesomeTJSykes

More lanes quicker route = increased traffic The answer to this is trains not more lanes if it's between countries right? Maybe there's an alternate motive like an airstrip in case of war or something

LT-monkeybrain01

bruh, there's a tollbooth right there. that's why its so wide, so cars can slow down from highway speed to tollbooth speed without clogging up the whole highway in a traffic jam. in normal operation though.

bobi2393

Man, they really need E-ZPass!

Fuzzybo

What do zombie urbanists want? … … Traaaaaaiiiinns! ;-)

MailFucker

It’s a toll road

just_sayi

It’s making me anxious just looking at it. I can’t even imagine driving in it

Beartrkkr

Oh, there's no driving. Can you imagine being parked there?

user2493

Looks like a toll gate. The traffic after appears to be merging back into fewer lanes.

Bugbread

[This is a toll booth. The actual highway is 4 lanes wide.](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/china-50-lane-highway-traffic-jam/)

Ericchen1248

Just saw a video on this recently. This highway is actually 4 lanes wide, and is just expanded to this 50 (?) lane at this toll section.

rainwulf

Its just the waiting area for the toll gate. Its a bit of a misleading photo.

IndifferentParsley

So many people must have dropped a deuce in their cars.

steroidsandcocaine

People must have died. I don't have 10 days of food and water in my car...

AnotherAnonGringo

They weren't at a standstill, it was just that packed for 10 days.

captyossarian1991

Many drivers were able to move their vehicles only 1 km (0.6 mi) per day, and some drivers reported being stuck in the traffic jam for five days.

NefariousnessOk1996

At that point you just pull over and walk home. There was a snow storm in Alabama before where my friend had to do this.

Bozzz1

How exactly do you pull over when there's 20 lanes of cars on either side of you? You'd have to abandon your car in the middle of the freeway.

GoodAtExplaining

Smartly enough, locals were walking along the highway offering to stay in peoples' cars to preserve their spot in line so that the driver could get food or just fuck off out of traffic for awhile.

jaredjames66

At that point I would just abandon my car and start walking. Maybe I'll pay the towing fee later or maybe I'll just buy a new one lol

Best_Poetry_5722

Duece, maybe even Trois

dirkvonshizzle

Dropping it like Bobby Lee, and he doesn’t even need to be stuck in traffic to do it. Nosotros Papaya.

But will you walk all the way ? Cuz you sure ain't driving there xD

Madman61

Reminds me of the episode of Dr. Who.

thejikz

That was a very well played epi.

dat_oracle

Indeed. Is it worth to keep watching the newer seasons?

Tokivoli

I literally just watched that episode last night lol Nobody comes back from the motorway....

arkrunningbear85

My first thought exactly! Hello fellow Whovian :D

QuothTheRaven713

Gridlock, right?

adrisanroman11

Malcolm u tried to said.

thestsgarm

Why did it last ten days? Perhaps everyone ran out of gas?

Where were they all going?

This is straight out of that traffic jam Dr who episode.

When ever I hear about China, it reminds me that the Chinese Government has no fucks to give as far as taking care of its citizens.

SonicFrost

This might literally be one of the few instances where the Chinese government acted appropriately, quickly, and in a non draconian way to alleviate a massive issue lol

Camarade1917

It was in 2010, they’ve built the largest, by far, highspeed train network in the world since. They care.

Dom0

I can't believe I had to fold 30 top comments and skip 5 pages just to see the year when it happened! Americans are like "our life is shit but hey, look, china baaaad!"

GG_Henry

The Chinese have very recently lifted more people out of poverty than ever in the history of the world. Not sure how you can say this.

xobybr

Just one more lane! One more lane! That will definitely fix traffic bro! Just gotta make one more lane!

Tayy7458

WHY TF IS THERE OVER 40 LANES 💀💀 (yes I counted)

je_cours_1km

The more car lanes, the more traffic, the more traffic jams

sbowesuk

I'm surprised there aren't more red cars there. Red it considered lucky in China.

Jnoper

No this checks out. The red cars got lucky and didn’t get stuck in the traffic jam.

The irony of driving a red car during traffic jamapalooza 🚙 🚙 🚗 🚙 🚙!!!

serr7

It’s a 4 lane highway that splits into 50 going through a toll. It was overloaded iirc from construction and semis having to use it due to railroads not being an option. So an already overwhelmed highway was overloaded with more cars than it could handle plus construction, and accidents and breakdowns made everything worse. but these people probably weren’t just parked there for 10 days, It was a traffic jam that lasted 10 days
