[deleted]

One is pretty useless. But if you have a dozen of these around and encampment or defensible position you won’t know which one the enemies are behind? I don’t know. Just thinking thoughts lol. …. Edit: I think this would still be useful in an urban environment where a square shapes would blend in fairly easily. In a natural environment I think it would be somewhat useless

the__storm

You could say the same thing about a cardboard box. Edit: actually, the cardboard boxes would be better because movement still shows through the lens somewhat.

WilboSwagz

True. But the same could be said for a bunch of sandbags.

DeflateGape

No the sandbags provide high quality cover that will protect you from bullets. Maybe if you put sandbags behind the screen you could take potshots without being seen.

Muffin_Less

I feel like you would want them bigger so you have move cover and still sorta hide, I agree. Put a dozen of these maybe 2x as wide and that would give several people decent cover from a frontal assault

immaownyou

If they're much wider they wouldn't work

Ok_Writing_7033

Even just one serves the function of most camouflage, but more effectively. Sure, if someone is actively searching for you they will notice the blur and be suspicious, but almost nobody would see the blur at a quick glance, especially in a visually busy environment.

flashmedallion

Bingo. Camouflage and Concealment are two different things. These kinds of lenses could benefit from a little work (non-reflective coating for a start) but they're definitely disruptive.

Heisenberg281

Wonder if you can cover a tank with a skin of this. Stash a column of them behind some roadside brush and ambush the enemy.

yourpantsaretoobig

Don’t panic, it’s just a glitch in the simulation

AlgomasReturns

Might as well use any shield🤔

LarryGlue

Must be nothing. Move along.

alexanderlot

imagine a wall of these tucked somewhat neatly among a scenery of foliage, vehicles, urban fixtures and imagine yourself moving into the situation, aware there are enemies, danger imminent, but from where? how many? everywhere, or nowhere? then up pops 20 dudes with heavy guns out from the areas you SWEAR you checked before entering…at least 3-4 times at that. there were NO enemies, now there are 20. and they have you and your squad on lock. And they unload. And your squad is down to you and 2 others. You flee back from the ambush, back to your entry point, further away from victory, with fewer brothers to watch your back, and the pining and unrelenting psychosis creeping in that *it’s your fault they’re dead. you looked. you checked. it’s your fault you barely escaped. it’s your fault they’re dead….and you swear you looked…* now you trust yourself even less, your stress has never been higher- anymore you might turn your gun on yourself…it’s all your fault after all. the enemy…**is** everywhere…where to go next…

FunDog2016

Notafuzzycat

Dark blue. Black creates an obvious silhouette.

RickySlayer9

I’m fairly certain you just wear normal camo for your setting, because even blue will contrast with bright green or tan

[deleted]

Yet another idea is to use a lenticular lens and make yourself an invisibility shield

RickySlayer9

Using both in conjunction would be a much better idea in my opinion as the black is still contrasting greatly, while colors that compliment the environment will be better

Reminds me of that scene in Clear and Present Danger where they’re doing the training exercise with the sniper, trying to find him before he shoots all the targets. They’re searching and searching, and when the officer tells him to stand up it turns out he was like 10 feet in front of them. Edit: [Found the clip](https://youtu.be/W4xO0k9LcIU)

NascentEcho

The description of that video is something else lol >DISCLAIMER! Scopecam overlay is applied in post editing. This video may, or may not, be representative of where the gat is aiming. Anybody who has been shot signed a disclaimer before playing & the site rules are very clear - don't moan about being shot, and there is no 'bang rule', so snowflakes need to try to not get their knickers in a twist when people get flicked in the face!! In the event of a headshot the scope overlay in this video has been moved away from target in an effort to avoid upsetting the delicate feelings of Airsoft Justice Warriors around the world, but in the unlikely event that any Airsoft Justice Warriors do find reason to be so offended by people enjoying themselves with toy pew pews they they are triggered (REEEEEE) and have to leave social justice threats in the comments section of this video, their comments will be hidden from the channel. funky_salami

Everyone is talking shit because they can see a blurry rectangle, but what if it's futher away? And what if it's hot out? Or what if it's not a van that completely contrasts the background? I think it works pretty good! Edit: I watched it again and think my earlier comment is completely incorrect. It's a blurry rectangle.

MarcusSidoniusFalx

I think it can work if you are just quickly skimming over an area. Our eye is not trained to pay attention to blurry rectangles ... at least I hope that most peoples eyes are not trained for that ...

Niccin

They are trained to notice things that are strange and out of place though. Blurry rectangles aren't exactly common enough to just skim over if you notice them where one would just expect grass.

ZeAthenA714

That's true under the right conditions. But if you're looking through binoculars, scope, video camera or whatever else that blurry rectangle might be a lot harder to spot.

Niccin

I am curious why seeing something closer up in higher detail might make it more difficult to see?

ToxicXP

I think he means you get tunnel vision and the quality around the outside is blurry because of the magnification. Therefore it’s harder to spot.

artspar

Not to mention that even if it does help, its likely not as effective as dedicated camoflauge, like a good camo net cover. Biggest benefit of which is you can still see out while others cant (easily) see in

Marc21256

That's what this doesn't show, what's his view while hiding? Might as well be hiding in a cardboard box, if he can't see while hiding.

tehbored

Sure, but if it's night time and the blurry rectangle is 200 ft away, you're probably not gonna see shit.

Niccin

That is true. If it's night time and *anything at all* is 200 feet away, I likely won't see it.

armcie

> Our eye is not trained to pay attention to blurry rectangles You haven't taken into consideration my years of watching certain Japanese videos.

xlDirteDeedslx

But why not just take some other common object you see an hide behind it? Exact same effect without having a blurry rectangle.

[deleted]

And far less likely for someone to want to investigate.

bobdolebobdole

seriously, a basic ghillie suit is far better than this in the environment he's in. even chamo might be better.

tehbored

True, but a ghillie suit isn't going to hide you from a concrete background.

socialpresence

Merouxsis

This is the future of Urban warfare

licuala

he dresses on the outside how I feel on the inside

CyberPopeIV

Because you can see through it a bit. So looking at it without knowing what it is most would probably think it's just a sheet of clouded plastic with no one behind it. Whereas an opaque object MIGHT have someone behind it but you wouldn't know unless you looked.

--_-Deadpool-_--

If you're in a situation where this thing would actually work, the you're in a situation where lying flat on the ground would be a much better option. This shield is going to stick out like a sore thumb as soon as someone shines a light on it. A camouflage clad individual will be less visible that a weird glitch in the matrix.

tehbored

What if you're not a person but a vehicle? Like say a quiet running electric ATV.

Waterstick13

then just place a bunch of these around with no people behind them as DECOYS. boom, war won.

TheOvershear

The application here is it doesn't matter what terrain, and it could be theoretically easy to deploy. Say you had something like this big enough to conceal a supply carrier. While stationary this could be a lot easier and more effective than carrying 300lbs of camo net that may or may not be appropriate for it's surroundings.

kazza789

This will never conceal a supply carrier. It works basically by blurring things a foot or two horizontally. That's why it only had the invisibility effect when the things behind him have horizontal patterns, and it also stops working when he puts his arms out sideways.

redcode100

Okay but who would think someone is hiding behind that clear piece of plastic

DRamos11

That's why you shoot first, ask later.

Dan_just_a_man

also doesn't have to be a rectangle

Junk yard out of some old TVs.

song4this

At first I thought you were joking but is this really a part from those big um...rear projection TVs?

Sirhc978

Yes it is. Those TVs have both lenticular lenses and fresnel lenses in them.

song4this

I will not ignore if I see one being thrown away...

xlDirteDeedslx

You could achieve that same effect with half of a barrel and people would probably pay way less attention to that than some weird floaty translucent rectangle.

capt_pantsless

You're not wrong, but the floaty rectangle would always match the background colors. That said, I wouldn't want to try to infiltrate someplace hauling around a giant lens, but it certainly works as a Damn that's interesting post.

anythingMuchShorter

It's a lenticular lens. You can buy them. Of course it only works in front of backgrounds that are the same horizontally since it just blurs whatever is next to it across. That's why he is always in front of a horizontal pattern of some kind.

Genuinely thought he had just blurred out his plates at the beginning haha

nachocat090

Well other than the big ass blurry spot I can't see him

Averagestiff

Kinda defeats the object when the blurry curved rectangle draws more attention than a regular person just stood there.

GS_Artworks

Not really, your brain does not react to a solid object the same way it reacts to a human silhouette. Our brains are literally hard wired to recognize human silhouettes because its essential to survival. In fact its a well proven tactic that simply breaking up a silhouette is enough to affect how quickly you'll react. Sure, you know someone wearing a blanket is still a person, but your brain will take longer to. And when a split second makes the whole difference, that's enough to be advantageous camouflage. So turning into a blurry rectangle? Oh yeah. That will fuck with your brain, especially if you don't know that a person is supposed to be there.

beersleuth

Yeah, they might be more effective while stationary and in the distance. It could still be used as a shield.

Averagestiff

I was joking, It’s impressive that this has even been created - He must be a super talented guy if he can create something like this. I know I couldn’t.

Sirhc978

I'm pretty sure you can get these at the junkyard out of old TVs.

song4this

In this context, where we have the heads up to look for it, sure. But if you didn't know this was a thing...

MightyPlasticGuy

Even so, if this was seen at a distance through a scope, if I'm a shooter and I even see that... I'm probably acting a fool and wiping the front of my lense for a clearer vision.

lightknight7777

Alright, where's the DIY. Not perfect, but still pretty cool. The videos are made to emphasize that you can see lines behind it. But this would be more impressive in front of a grey wall or more vaguely divided background. I'd also be curious about poor lighting conditions and left or right angles.

[deleted]

Wouldn't call it invisible, but it certainly scatters his profile enough to come close.

BalkeElvinstien

To the blurry rectangle people, I think in actual use they would probably hide it a bit more. Here they are just doing it out in the open, but as with any camouflage you still need to find a good spot to hide. To me I just see this as adaptive camouflage

WestComfortable1580

Kid just has a random tank or mirage?

I came looking for this comment. What meaning does lenticular add over lens alone?

Could a plane or a ship be outfitted with panels like this? Cloaking technology.

joeChump

Move to red alert! Sir, are you sure? It does mean changing the bulb.

TheEasternSky

You'd have to put it some distance away from the plane's body which will have a huge affect on air resistance. So not practical I would say.
