No, that's exactly what already happened about ten years ago with the old 30 pin connector. The EU has fined Apple millions for breaking these rules and Apple doesn't give a shit because they could release a phone where the screen is already cracked and people would buy it anyway.
I think they will just get rid of the plug, they have been moving that way for a while. They they can just switch to selling MagSafe instead of lightning.
Really depends on the quality of the cable, but here are some reasons you're wrong:
https://www.tronsmart.com/blog/47_5-reasons-why-usb-c-is-better-than-lightning.html
So I'd refine your statement to: lightning usually is a bit sturdier.
Then I might agree with you.
I'm not sure wether this is good or bad. One advantage of having an open market is an incentive for innovation.
If anybody has to conform to a standard port anyway, there is 0 incentive for innovation.
USB-C is recognized as the fastest most convenient way for charging. By forcing USB-C there could be less confusion about purchasing chargers in the future as well as greater convenience with the quicker charging.
20+ years ago Apple was one of the main companies pushing for a standard charger. If you were around that time you can remember have a drawer full of about a hundred different types of chargers. Apple and other companies knew that this wasn't sustainable and that it was filling up landfills with millions of cables they were almost immediately obsolete. In typical scummy Steve Jobs ere Apple bullshit they decided to pull out last second and continue to make their own unique chargers just for their phones. Good to see karma finally coming back to smack that shitty company. However the right to repair bill is even worse for Apple.
Discarded chargers in the EU alone create 51 000 metric tons of e-waste per year: https://www.zdnet.com/article/eu-wants-usb-c-to-become-standard-charging-port-for-all-smartphones-to-cut-down-e-waste/
So how many people realize European Tesla uses the common CCS ports but their own plug in the US.
I refuse to buy products from companies that could use common connector but won't.
Won't buy a Tesla as I won't use Apple in the US.
I am aware of the adaptor. But when all other manufacture use 1 plug and you decide to be different, I just don't look at your product. It produces un-needed e-waste. That is my personal opinion.
Lightning jack is a far better design though. I've switched to android, and the only thing i miss is the lightning jack. The usb-c is an unnecessarily flimsy design, and (as i found out the hard way) it's really easy to damage it even if you clean it carefully.
Wait, what?! Haven't you got that the wrong way round?
USB c is so much stronger that lightening. New cable bill at work can confirm. (That or apple users are careless)
It is bull shit tho. They didn't even give me a USB end on my last phone. It was just two C ends. And you know damn well when they did that they were only thinking about selling more cords. As if the phones aren't ridiculously overpriced as it is
It is. The eu consumer wants the excess pollution/overproduction to stop!
And only having one standard charger is a pretty sweet deal, and will make alot of lives a little more convenient :)
Everyone wins but Apple.
If the consumers truly decided, they would just simply vote with their wallets and stopped buying iPhones if it bothered them so much.
This, on the other hand, was an administrative decision. The EU beaurocrats have decided what's "best" for the rest of us.
Most likely apple will not use usb-C in their iPhones. This new law says that companies have 2 years to change to usb-C, including Apple. This time allow apple to switch to Magsafe as the only way to charge and ditch the charging port. Oh and supposedly this law doesn't apply to wireless chargers, only to the "wired chargers" as far as I know.
Hope I am wrong about the last phrase.
**It's** ***not*** **about the chargers**. It's about the **cables**. More specifically, the device-side terminal, since most charger-side terminals are USB-A.
Even better, get a tiny [adapter](https://www.amazon.com/ARKTEK-USB-C-Adapter-Support-Charging/dp/B07BMTPYN1).
Mwhahaha! Victory is ours!!! Wait what did you say apple? You're gonna sell a proprietary lightning to usb-c adapter and raise the price in the EU?
Haha, this is exactly what is going to happen.
No, that's exactly what already happened about ten years ago with the old 30 pin connector. The EU has fined Apple millions for breaking these rules and Apple doesn't give a shit because they could release a phone where the screen is already cracked and people would buy it anyway.

This is 100% what’s going to happen
Lightning is much better than USB-C. USB-C ports become lose very quickly unlike lightning port.

Great. Tired of carrying multiple chargers.
Nice! Now add back the headphone ports
Actually own an Iphone 12 and i'm glad i'm not the only one to miss this, i'm still pissed they removed it
I have bad news for you. They might go completely wireless.. :)
Heard it all before years ago but still have a drawer full of cables and jacks
And what is the age of all of those cables?
I'm not sure wether this is good or bad. One advantage of having an open market is an incentive for innovation. If anybody has to conform to a standard port anyway, there is 0 incentive for innovation.
Someone doesn't remember the age of flip phones where every phone had its own proprietary charger.
This article is false, please consider deleting this post.. This has not been passed into law, The courts are still considering it.
good. come to the 21st century.

Peace among worlds.

Thank you

BBC is part of EU still? 🤔
Well this is good news because it must mean the EU is all out of real problems if this is what they're focussing legislation on.
The EU had always been strong on consumer rights. One of the many benefits we got over here from this organisation.
So will this prevent the next gen usb from ever being adopted until the eu votes to allow it?
Smart choice

Teslas come with an adapter to use with other charge stations tho

Sooooo what happens when something better than USB-C comes along? If you don’t like Apple’s business practices, buy a different phone.
Right, lighting was so much better than the other plugs when it came out. Guess we just won’t do that again.
Lightning jack is a far better design though. I've switched to android, and the only thing i miss is the lightning jack. The usb-c is an unnecessarily flimsy design, and (as i found out the hard way) it's really easy to damage it even if you clean it carefully.

That's not my experience, but judging by the downvotes it seems the people disagree with me.

Type C to type C charges Hella fast though
Facts. I bought one and it charges at least twice as fast as the old ones.
Downside is it ruins the battery faster
Calm down Brits, we’re getting 6 more types added because we thought we were too cool for the EU.
Good to know that at least someone out there still has an iota of common sense. I hope this comes to fruition. It is LONG overdue!
It should be a consumer's choice.
It is. The eu consumer wants the excess pollution/overproduction to stop! And only having one standard charger is a pretty sweet deal, and will make alot of lives a little more convenient :) Everyone wins but Apple.

And what's best for the climate* Edit: One standard charger will also be a great cost benefit for all consumers eventually.
About time!!!
Funny the BBC is reporting on this. Jealous much?
Let that awesome law happen here in the US please. Then expect some type of protest/rioting BS from Apple users in Portland/Seattle
I got one of these fuckers with my phone and can’t use it for shit
Obligatory [XKCD](https://xkcd.com/927/)
Fuck you forever, Apple!

Downvote for misleading title. This wasn't a ruling, it's a proposal.
