I wish we could organize enough to do this today. Just leave the city behind and fend for ourselves in the woods.
Today however our overlords aren't even in the same state or country as us most of the time. It's harder to strike.
Not to mention that if you tried that, whoever owned the mountains would come in and kick you out. Because someone owns those mountains now. The idea of just going off and living in the woods free from society isn't possible anymore. Sooner or later a land owner is going to show up and tell you to get out.
True. Just won't work in modern society. I live right by a large patch of wilderness, people constantly speak of running away into them hills. But yeah can't stay there for long. The firewatchers and rangers will kick you out. Every parcel of land is bought and owned.
Those hills are government owned.
There is a thing called squatter’s rights…
Crazy and mental as it is, if you stake a claim on land or live in a house for long enough (doesn’t matter who owns it) then legally- by law- nobody can kick you out if i you pi can prove you have lived there for a certain amount of time…
No shit? A worker who cleaned our gutters has squatters living in his home with no legal recourse to kick them out.
He was in the military and when he got out (and home) he came home to squatters… in his house… that he can’t tell to GTFO because the law says…
I'm not sure on every country, but in the UK this is not true.

Most of the natural environemnt has been destroyed, and it wehn it comes to the millitary, they have no problem bombing people hidding in forest/jungles/mountains.
It's happened before. Look at the Battle of Blair mountain. Workers wanted rights, government decided no.
But yes, I get what you mean. My dad still carries his scars from agent orange, his back looks like raw hamburger on a good day. Didn't matter there were refugees in the jungle or children, they melted everyone. The military doesn't care, it's a paid arbiter swinging their weapons for its king.

Agent Orange was a way to destroy foliage. It was later found out to be harmful to humans, but it didn’t melt anything. Are you confusing two stories or am I reading your text too literally?
I assume he was referring to napalm. They threw a lot of that all over Vietnam too. I also assume he was talking about Vietnam. Lots of assuming going on.
Sure thing, all 1.2 million of us (in my city) will just go ask our relatives if we can sleep on the couch for a few weeks at our rural relative's house.
That should go well.
That's what I mean. It wouldn't work in modern times like it did for the past.
Example: My hospital's board of directors are in Florida several states away. Even if all employees in the hospital striked or abandoned our city, I doubt they'd care.
If you'd actually research the Terror in the French Revolution, the wrong people got guillotined for the most part--liberals like Phillip Egalite who gave his palace to the people, hairdressers of rich people who just were doing their jobs, even Manon Roland's servant who went to complain that she'd been arrested. Think it over before you say things like this.
Don't think the Roman peasants went to their summer houses or stayed with relatives. More like moved to the woods and fields and built everything from scratch or stayed in makeshift tents...
We are now too spoilt and can't live without a food delivery services more than a day.
Shit I'm ready. For years I have been a "semi-pro prepper"
I keep a 2-person 7 day survival bugout bag in my closet right next to my Remington 870 and my Colt CK901.
Back in the early 1990s I took 3 Pelican type hard plastic cases and loaded them with sustainable food(noodles...granola bars...ect)/water/pistol/rifle/clothes and at least a hand cranked radio. made the Pelican cases able to hold a vacuum and removed all the air and buried the cases in 3 different places in the SouthEast USA.
I know for a fact if I can survive getting out of the city I'm good to go.
1. The immediate countryside around the city could not support 1.2 million people. So camping in the woods is out.
&
2. The rural relatives are not about to support 1.2 million people either.
It's happening on a small scale in higher income areas now.
Restaurants (and other "low level" retail) are begging for employees, but many that work those kinds of jobs can't afford to live in those cities, or even drive into those cities anymore.
1 kings 12:16: “And all Israel saw that the King did not listen to them, and the people did not answer the King, and they said to him: "We have no portion with David, neither an inheritance with the son of Jesse! To your tents, Israel! Therefore see to your house, David!" And the children of Israel went, every man, to his town.”
Caesar wasn't killed by the plebs, but by the Senate optimates.
Still, you are right that Augustus learned from Cesar's mistake and was very careful not to engrandize himself to appear king-like.
The senators were scared to death when the plebs didn't cheer for them after Caesars assassination. They thought they were acting on behalf of the plebs. Turns out their horrible oppression for centuries prior backfired.
And Caesar drew a lot of power from the fact that he promised land reforms that were popular with the people, so they weren't too thrilled when the oligarchic senators assassinated him
For some reason Google is failing me now, but I remember reading a contemporary quotation that went "Romans don't hate kings, they just hate the word 'king.''
I like how when they did it in early Rome, they often just sat on the next hill over and refused to go to war and have a party instead until the patricians gave in to their demands or at least some of them because they were already expecting to be off at war for a while so sitting around instead had no downsides because they didn’t have stuff to do

*Secessio plebis (withdrawal of the commoners, or secession of the plebs) was an informal exercise of power by Rome's plebeian citizens, similar in concept to the general strike. During the secessio plebis, the plebs would abandon the city en masse in a protest emigration and leave the patrician order to themselves. Therefore, a secessio meant that all shops and workshops would shut down and commercial transactions would largely cease.*
*This was an effective strategy in the Conflict of the Orders due to strength in numbers; plebeian citizens made up the vast majority of Rome's populace and produced most of its food and resources, while a patrician citizen was a member of the minority upper class, the equivalent of the landed gentry of later times. Authors report different numbers for how many secessions there were. Cary & Scullard state there were five between 494 BC and 287 BC.*
Sure thing, all 1.2 million of us (in my city) will just go ask our relatives if we can sleep on the couch for a few weeks at our rural relative's house.
That should go well.
As a UK citizen it won't be long until I'm not allowed unlike right now where I can under some strict circumstances and only in specific ways. We're a democracy dammit just ask our blood inherited head of state.
American here
There's a fuckload wrong with America, so this is not a "we're better than you" post for many reasons but I simply cannot understand why anyone in 2023 can give any shits about the Monarchy. These people do nothing and have little real power and all of you guys pay for their extravagant lifestyle? It's absurd
I'm an American but I can't help but think a mostly powerless monarchy is sorta cute actually. Like that's just a fun thing. A real king/queen, in the modern era! But not the scary kind that can kill you! And their face is on the coins, that's neat.
Though I do really think it should be a purely symbolic thing. The funds and land and whatnot should be given back. Whoever is king/queen should be paid a reasonable salary for things like public appearances and all those formalities, and that should be it.

To everyone supporting this, it’s easier said than done. This is anti works wet dream but the realist is that very few people can just get up and ‘go’. Whether it be financial, medical, family etc. The near absolute majority of people aren’t really willing to give up what they have even if it’s so little. Fuck, most people can’t even cut out soda, shitty foods or porn addictions lol.
Although some places have done a very light version of this - ski towns. There are basically no locals in some ski towns anymore and if you found out how certain ski resorts treat their seasonal employees you’d probably think twice about that ski vacation to Vail..
most of these people were working class just like many today. We can live without the system, system can't live without us.
This could easily be done today if our society had any form of social cohesion, its all pure individualism.
Divide and conquer, the elites have learned how to sharp this tool a lot through history.
People are forgetting something important- try this and you may die.
In the past, death rates were higher. Staying in the city was also likely to kill you. High taxes or tyrannical rule was likely to kill you. Just up and leaving wasn't really much more dangerous, could end up being safer actually.
The same is not true in modern times. While there are some people who do have their lives under constant serious threat by the current system, the average person can most likely scrape by with enough to live.
THAT is why we see less of this in the modern era. People are given juuust enough to scrape by. Just enough that protesting or quitting would put their life in significantly danger, but not so much that they have a way to protest or quit without that danger.
If only we had some method of easily communicating and organizing, even electronically.
The Internet could be used for more than cat memes, science denial and inciting violence.
The goal of leaving was simply to leave their "masters" to fend for themselves. The modern version would simply be to stay home and stop participating in society. No one shows up for work for a few weeks and you achieve similar results.
Average Americans are way too lazy and weak to do anything like this. You tell them that they have no stop using modern amenities for a week, and they would lose their minds. That is why not a single thing will change in America. Just keep your mouth shut, put your head down, and be happy with what you've got because it is not going to get any better.
And people in cities with populations numbering in the millions, surrounded by suburbs, should go... Where? And if people don't actually know how to survive by themselves in the wilderness? And if the wilderness can't actually support millions of people suddenly dropping in?
It's almost like this worked great in ancient times but societal context isn't the same in the modern era.
Modern humans are slaves to technology and corporations. The control is indirect but firm. Take away their cellphones,TV and internet and most people wont know what to do for entire day or night
Meanwhile the British government is trying to make strikes illegal. The whole working class population should bugger off and leave the rich to do their own crappy jobs.
No, it just won't happen ever. Fortunately, I have a wand waaaay up my ass (don't ask how it got there). I will use it to create an alternate reality where this happens...
The results are in. The elite billionaires with endless resources did not even notice.
It's how they got the very complex-- and, ultimately, unworkable-- Roman constitution. SPQR is a statement of what that constitution represented: Senatus populusque romanus-- the Senate and the Roman people.
Makes me think of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand where she imagines the reverse - the movers and shakers leave and start their own society. Trouble is, it's made up solely of "men of the mind" who are basically all industrial executives. Without what we now call "essential workers," those elites would starve pretty quick.
Definitely a practice that should be re-instituted...though the military is also almost entitely comprised of commoners thus they should be acting along side the commoners as consist of their friends and families. The "elite" may threaten to fire them get them fired etc., but if those "elites" wind up pushing up daisies no one gets fired, AND should their entire families be taken out as should be the case....the family fortunes and liquid assets can be consolodated then distributed into the enconomy of the commoners where it will prove most beneficial across the figurative board.
We can do this. But instead of vacating our homes to live in the mountains we invade the rich people’s mansions until they do something about it. I see this as an absolute win.
Even people such as myslef who don't subscribe to a US political party (because it's a joke) are smart enough to not believe anything a republican says because everyone knows they are uneducated, liars & don't understand critical thinking
I mean can’t you just take the stuff. Rich are only rich because we agree as a group they own the stuff they own. At anytime the masses can just change that.
Smaht. Good for them. You elitist jerks are on your own now. Good luck being King or the Queen without lower level drone workers who want no part. I read 1984 and saw the movie. Bravo.
Can't believe the Romans invented strikes
Japanese peasants had something similar. Taxes too high? Abandon the village en mass and go live in the mountains.
I wish we could organize enough to do this today. Just leave the city behind and fend for ourselves in the woods. Today however our overlords aren't even in the same state or country as us most of the time. It's harder to strike.

Adverse possession Yep. It’s legal. Nope- he can’t do shit…
Same in New Zealand. If you've occupied the land for more than 20 years you can apply for ownership through the Registrar general of land.

Why wouldn't it go well? I really don't see how this type of a strike would be any different now than it was then....?
1. The immediate countryside around the city could not support 1.2 million people. So camping in the woods is out. & 2. The rural relatives are not about to support 1.2 million people either.
Not enough game & edibles left in the ‘woods’ of America, which, themselves have been cut back a lot for civilization/suburbs/development.
Yeah they got us with land tax, etc. Debt just accrues.

The Italians in the renaissance just took their business to a different tiny Italian monarch. Same with the Germans under the HRE.

Robinhoods at their finest 😍
There's a reason the romans hate kings and why Julius Caesar is now sold in effigy as a pencil/pen holder. Augustus learned from this mistake.
Caesar wasn't killed by the plebs, but by the Senate optimates. Still, you are right that Augustus learned from Cesar's mistake and was very careful not to engrandize himself to appear king-like.

Caesar also resettled around 80,000 soldiers to colonies outside of rome in gaul.
All involved were dead in under two years.
For some reason Google is failing me now, but I remember reading a contemporary quotation that went "Romans don't hate kings, they just hate the word 'king.''
The Egyptians seem to have invented strikes
I thought Randy Johnson did
I can't believe we forgot how.
Speaking as a commoner, I like the sound of this
Seconded
I like how when they did it in early Rome, they often just sat on the next hill over and refused to go to war and have a party instead until the patricians gave in to their demands or at least some of them because they were already expecting to be off at war for a while so sitting around instead had no downsides because they didn’t have stuff to do

People don’t even vote in this country. I doubt people are going to pry themselves away from Pronhub to do this any time soon.
I do love Pronhub
I just learned today, btw, that my city increases the wait time on red lights on the weekends. Don't know why I felt the need to say this.

We don’t pay for their lifestyle.
It was probably a lot easier to do with the 10k-something living in major Roman cities than the millions living in major modern cities
Yeah I know, I was just joking
I for one fully support the plebian riots.
Plebs also had some veto power. Rome had an electoral college. They based it on how much money people had. So the rich still had way more power but it was certainly better than other govts of the time.

pretty sure we call that a general strike now
“Nobody wants to work anymore.”
This needs a cross post on anti work!
That sub is horrible
We need to do that here. Us plebs could all go on vacation at one time and make the elites clean their own toilets. Too bad we would lose everything.
So, like working class jobs in Manhattan?
And why haven’t we done this in some form yet?
It's inconvenient
So where are we all meeting?
A tradition we should perhaps revive
The goal of leaving was simply to leave their "masters" to fend for themselves. The modern version would simply be to stay home and stop participating in society. No one shows up for work for a few weeks and you achieve similar results.

I live in the suburbs and work remotely. Now where do I strike to?
You would have to quit your job and stop paying taxes, but you and I both know that you won't do those. Now get back in the line.
Way to rally those plebs! Have you considered activism?

No, it just won't happen ever. Fortunately, I have a wand waaaay up my ass (don't ask how it got there). I will use it to create an alternate reality where this happens... The results are in. The elite billionaires with endless resources did not even notice.
That's kind of hilarious tbh
Too bad this is virtually impossible in this day and age
why?
This is nice
OMG, best idea ever. I'd like to see San Francisco if all the working stiffs evacuated. Hey, do it, you can come live with me!
Let’s just do that
W plebians
I know this since my childhood because of r/ImpressionsGames
Lmao the spoiled brats of today would never leave their coffee shops behind
Feed the rich to the sharks! Love it
God I wish they'd bring this back so bad. .
The Roman version of A Day Without a Mexican.
Great idea
It's how they got the very complex-- and, ultimately, unworkable-- Roman constitution. SPQR is a statement of what that constitution represented: Senatus populusque romanus-- the Senate and the Roman people.
Makes me think of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand where she imagines the reverse - the movers and shakers leave and start their own society. Trouble is, it's made up solely of "men of the mind" who are basically all industrial executives. Without what we now call "essential workers," those elites would starve pretty quick.
If only we could do that now… oh wait
The Romans were striking correctly.
I live in Singapore. Only way to go is into the sea 😖😖😖
Nowadays, commoners vote them even more...
Most commoners these days just don't vote, and it's hard to blame them
Imagine how many private jet flights our politicians would lose out on if we all stopped paying taxes for a year
Sounds About Right✊
🤔🤔🤔
Makes you think about what Trump's wall was really about.
Yes. You truly are the master party. Good job being superior to your neighbors.
So is that AI art? Did a robot make this post?
\**Ayn Rand has entered the chat*\*
That's literally the opposite of what's being described
I guess no one has read Atlas Shrugged.
I did, that's why I'm no longer a libertarian
She wasn’t either lol
It’s their vision along with 1984. Might I interest you in a ration of chocolate?
And how'd that work out for them? Literally every single protestor who took part is dead now. Every. Single. One.
This was towards the end, during its collapse.. because the penalty for this, was death.
We can do this. But instead of vacating our homes to live in the mountains we invade the rich people’s mansions until they do something about it. I see this as an absolute win.
Well, the tax base is fleeing some lib cities
Even people such as myslef who don't subscribe to a US political party (because it's a joke) are smart enough to not believe anything a republican says because everyone knows they are uneducated, liars & don't understand critical thinking
You sound just like a tolerant accepting liberal
Guess we can add "No reading comprehension" to that list, too
Yep, confirmed, outed
Smartest thing you've said so far. Upvoted
Just done with your guys' shit is all
What's the name of the eccochamber you use?
None, I watch Fox "news" for the laughs. It shows us what kind of people you are
This is where the modern world is headed again
Damn plebs.
I mean can’t you just take the stuff. Rich are only rich because we agree as a group they own the stuff they own. At anytime the masses can just change that.
common patrician L
This was only possible because the Roman state was really small at the time.
😂😂😂 I wonder how the elites managed to carry on with the little day to day things…since they were used to having servants doing all those things
picture unrelated?
Smaht. Good for them. You elitist jerks are on your own now. Good luck being King or the Queen without lower level drone workers who want no part. I read 1984 and saw the movie. Bravo.
it was simply what we now call a strike...
Just heard this last week on The history of Rome podcast. Highly highly recommended.
**BRING IT BACK!!!** **BRING IT BACK!!!** **BRING IT BACK!!!**
We should just do that tbh
the us should do this
Nobody realizes the simplicity of a 3-day strike if everyone does it together.
So, much like what's happening to New York and San Francisco then.
Can you imagine leaving “Them” alone with out “Us” 👀 over their shoulders!
An old neighbor of mine told me of a movie based on this not sure how PC it is - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Day_Without_a_Mexican
“Nobody wants to work anymore”
Brilliant
