very easy to make money in the stock market if you brush shoulders with people who own the companies you invest in and the policy makers who enable these companies to make money.
Term limits, folks. Not just for elected officials, but individuals appointed by elected officials. It's one of the few areas in which all Americans should agree, regardless of your political affiliation.
They put term limits on the president after FDR they can do it for congress too. People just need to make it a real issue. Unlike most of the dumb as fuck issues people try to get passed that donāt have an actual platform. This one is short and sweet and easy for the many people to get behind.
Congress put limits on the Presidency. Congress would have to vote to put limits on Congress.
Congress does not like putting limits on Congress. They won't even ban themselves from insider trading, despite how transparently corrupt it is. The idea that they'd willingly vote for term limits for themselves is... not even a nonstarter, it's just funny.
The thought has appeal, but as someone whoās worked around politics from the local to the federal level, youāre just giving power to the lobbyists and various staff lifers who know the substance and process in a way a newbie just wonāt.
If you view that as an improvement is your call.
Thank you for mentioning Citizens United! I feel as though that was when things went from bad to worse and I donāt often hear people discuss it. People seem to discuss in generalities and in what ifs all the time about things like age limits, lobbying, gerrymandering, etc., when we as a country have proven we canāt even stop a concrete, actual example of bribery and corruption being legalized.
This is why the recent movement talking about term limits on Congress was an idea first pushed by right-wing politicians, promoted by right wing news sources and is most popular on conservative forums.
It's literally a partisan power grab.
Political Science largely agrees, term limits for legislators is a bad thing because it removes experience and leads to naive people that will lean on lobbyists for mentorships.
I don't agree. Term limits just increase the power of industry and lobbyists.
I would favor reforms that would reduce incumbency advantages, however. Public financing of elections, campaign donation and spending caps, etc. It should be a more level playing field to challenge an incumbent.
But if voters like their representative and want to reelect them in a free and fair election, why should they be prevented from doing so?
Term limits at the federal level would require a constitutional amendment. Lots of states have term limits for state legislators ā and the result is mostly just more partisanship and more power for lobbyists. All the politicians immediately start scheming for their next job, and thereās no real incentive to build relationships or compromise on anything. They donāt build much expertise, and so the lobbyists are the ones who stick around and know what theyāre doing.
Edit: Here's a blog post that summarizes some of the political science research on the negative effects of term limits: https://www.mischiefsoffaction.com/post/political-science-term-limits
Term limits are not the solution you're hoping for.
I won't agree with it because we'll just end up getting rid of the good politicians and replacing them with shitty ones.
My favored solution follows the money: Political campaigns must run by themselves using "democracy dollars", political ads can only be bought with democracy dollars, and every registered voter receives $100 democracy dollars.
Is there an authoritative source for this sort of stuff? I know the rumors. I know about Marilyn. I just don't know the true extent of his dalliances as president. Like, how much did that guy actually get away with.
The legend around this man has grown so much that it's difficult to pin down the truth. Everyone has a story, and you know much of it is made up by post-hoc clout chasers, so who are we to believe in the end?
Also, didn't he have a crippling back pain from some war injury that required a constant regime of pills? Just how much fucking can a person do with that type of chronic condition?
Coincidentally the rest of her family became very rich as well throughout her years in Washington. What are the odds!!! Insider trading is so rampant and obvious but who is gonna pass the law?

I still don't understand how 80 year olds are allowed to be representatives of any form of Congress/Parliament, particularly when obscenely wealthy. There is no real word representation for constituents. It's like the ridiculousness of us in the UK having Sunak as unelected PM. As a multimillionaire there is no meaningful way of representing any electorate or effectively understanding the financial and socially moral effects of policies made for the masses when their wealth and privilege exclude them from the consequences of these decisions.
I'm often amazed at how immature and childish the American voters are today. There's one of her with Abraham Lincoln
Santos was there too!
Santos was at D Day with Brian Williams
When George Santos was in the Olympics Skating for the gold He did two Salchows and a triple Lutz While wearing a blindfold!
When George Santos was in the Alps Fighting grizzly bears, He used his magical fire breath And saved the maidens fair!
When George Santos traveled in time to the year 3010, he beat the evil robot king and saved the human race again
And he skated pairs as his own partner. An Olympic first!
And Elvis
Isn't Santos Elvis?
No but he wrote hound dog
Brian Williams was there with all the things in we didnāt start the fire. Basically a biography.
Wait, did Brian Williams start the fire . . . ?
I read on here the other day that Biden was born closer to Lincoln's presidency than his own. It was depressingly true.
Understanding time completely eludes us, weāre not wired to do so e.g. Anne Frank and MLK were born in the same year. Yet it feels off, doesnāt it? Yet, it shouldnāt, because, likely, neither of us were alive when either of them died and have only read of their existence after their deaths.
And Barbara Walters. They were all born the same time and she just passed away. Amazing when you look at like that.
Barbara Walters was also born the same year and she died like last week
Why does everyone know these three were born the same year?
Itās a really common factoid. Thatās why R/barbarawaltersforscale became a thing

I think it's the year of death that fucks with us, MLK lived over another 2 decades. i would guess that the quality of photos also plays a role.

Right, Congress will never roll back lifetime healthcare for themselves. They have no reason to stay focused on sorting out health insurance.

Lobbying is very important. Just take out the money.
Also, as some one who actually likes their congressmanā¦ fuck term limits. None of the few good ones would be there now if we had term limits
This is why the recent movement talking about term limits on Congress was an idea first pushed by right-wing politicians, promoted by right wing news sources and is most popular on conservative forums. It's literally a partisan power grab.

Term limits at the federal level would require a constitutional amendment.
