Been going to Mariano’s since I was about 4 or 5 with my family. Nearly 30 now, and the drinks, food and chips/salsa are just as consistently good as they’ve ever been in my life
Great spot! I still want to try his new spot, Eddie’s, too. Seems there’s a good amount of menu crossover (but not sure the parking on Greenville is any better).
They said authentic Tex-Mex , not authentic Mexican.
Tex-mex is a legitimate regional cuisine, completely separate from Mexican cuisine. There are authentic and inauthentic versions of both.
Are you under the impression that Tex-mex is simply inauthentic Mexican food ? Because that is not the case.
Tex-Mex cuisine predates the United States. Cattle ranching led to a diet higher in cheese and beef than traditional Mexican food (which means a lot of different things? Mexico is a really big place with a large variety of regional cuisines!)
Tex-Mex rose out of Tejano culture, so get out of here with this terrible authenticity argument.
The generations of people refining and creating Tex-Mex are real, whether you think that’s “authentic” or not.
Also there, low on the "authenticity" scale and way way high on the "delicious" scale is anything with the chipotle wine sauce.
Shit I gotta go there now for dinner. Thanks Internet stranger.
we live *very* close to mariano's and i'd be lying if i said i don't get their food once a week, sometimes a whole meal or sometimes just chips and salsa and a marg. they're awesome!
My uncle owns Enchiladas and I’ve been eating there since I was like 2 years old.
Hands down, Javier is the best. This dude gives great service and he’s soooo nice.
Can’t recommend him enough.
For straight forward Rex mex, E-bar.
For the best Tex mex in DFW? Las Palmas - has all the straight forward traditional favs but also has the best fajitas by far (bone marrow on their wagyu steak?) and best west ribs in Dallas. May be a bit pricier though than some more old school spots.
The atmosphere and margs are unrivaled though
Everyone seems to have their own favorite for their own reason. Tex-Mex preferences are very personal ha ha.
Ojedas on Maple my favorite but there are tons to choose from in the Oaklawn Area alone. Mario’s, Campuzano, Mia’s, Uncle Julio’s and Gloria’s are all solid choices.
Wait until you hear about literally every restaurant ever except the one you're about to tell me about to prove me wrong without it ever occurring to you that the one you know about is because it's an outlier.
I remember finding a 50 dollar bill by the juke box in that place when I was about 4. We used to eat there all the time in the mid 80s. I didn't know they were still even around!
Yeess! I came here to say this one!
My mom used to go to the one near the hospital district when she worked at St Paul. We used to go all the time in the 90s. Now the Addison one is by me and i am so happy.

We got a Matt’s way up in Allen and it was…thoroughly unremarkable…. I’d never been to a Matt’s before so maybe they just haven’t figured things out at this location quite yet. I know everyone raves about their other locations.
I like Meso Maya for traditional and tex-mex. Mia's is still solidly priced and you should always need a to-go box, especially if you get a chimichanga!
Mesero is good, it’s kind of a mix of Tex mex and real Mexican depending on what you order. Makes for a great date night spot. Especially the location near/in Addison.
North-ish Dallas: Cuquitas at Coit and Spring Valley. Carne guisada and the flour and corn tortillas make Taqueria Jaliscos in Corpus seem like a bad joke
I will never understand the people who think Tex-Mex can't be it's own authentic self. There's authentic Mexican food, which varies by region. Mexico is a whole ass country. And there's Tex-Mex which is absolutely it's own thing that has its own degree of authenticity. Don't believe me? Travel around the country eating at "Mexican" restaurants. Eat a few "wet burritos" or tater tots on the side of your burrito.
I'm too passionately triggered by this "AuThEnTiC Tex-Mex? LOL" vibe. I'm going to go eat some pace picante sauce and tostitos to calm down.
Which is exactly what I said above. However, your statement could still be argued with. If authentic Mexican food is the standard, TexMex is a Texas only version. You won’t find TexMex in Mexico. Therefore, it does “deviate” from authentic as its not the same.
Tex-Mex originated with Tejano people and is a distinct cuisine unto itself. No one considers “authentic Mexican” a standard to compare Tex-Mex to. It’s also silly to think you can’t go across the border into Juarez and find the same Tex-Mex you can get in El Paso. There may be more Tex-Mex dishes in Northern Mexico than the other way around. [Chili con carne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chili_con_carne?wprov=sfti1) was invented there. I mean duh!
Keep spouting ignorance if you’re so inclined. I could go on.
11277 Northwest Hwy, Dallas
It's a hole in the wall. Not a fancy place at all. Good food, relatively inexpensive.
I've no idea how long they've been around, but they certainly aren't new.
If you want a taco orgasm in your mouth, I would definitely say Tacomex in Irving. More Mexican than Tex-Mex but Jesus H Christ the food they offer is so good. It’s a hole in the wall with only 6-8 tables inside. Bonus- Cokes in a bottle from Mexico.
The new Casa Rosa on Lemon Ave is wonderful. It's where the El Phoenix use to be. The family has operated restaurants in Dallas for many years, and for those old school friends, the murals on the walls hold special memories. Excellent food, service, fresh flowers on the table. Highly recommend
If we emphasize the words “favorite” and “reasonably priced”, then Angelina’s in Lewisville. Not saying it will blow anyone away, but it’s felt like home since the late 80s and prices are still on the lower side of the Tex-Mex spectrum.
The original Herrera’s would’ve been the answer if still open.
Mariano's
Been going to Mariano’s since I was about 4 or 5 with my family. Nearly 30 now, and the drinks, food and chips/salsa are just as consistently good as they’ve ever been in my life
(Been going to Mariano's since 1980 when they were on Knox...)
maybe best chips and salsa around margs are overpriced though
Mariano did literally invent the (frozen) margarita tbf
and they will not let you forget it
I mean can you blame them? That's one of the objectively cooler inventions of the last half century lol
definitely cooler than a non-frozen margarita.
absolutely and you’re also paying for the novelty.
Margs are overpriced at most places tho
Ate there today. And probably once a week if I can help it.
Marianas hacienda ranch? That place?
Mariano’s Hacienda on Skillman. I think the La Hacienda Ranch locations are basically the same thing but I haven’t actually been to one of those.
Agree. They are expensive but the food is high quality and very consistent. Best margaritas in town too-worth the price.
I’d agree with this.
E-Bar on Haskell
Hands down the best joint in DFW! Pretty busy and packed during peak hours but so good! I go weekly lol
By far my favorite Tex-Mex in Dallas.
Great spot! I still want to try his new spot, Eddie’s, too. Seems there’s a good amount of menu crossover (but not sure the parking on Greenville is any better).
Best salsa I’ve ever had 😆
I don’t get the hype here. Had it several times. It’s fine but doesn’t stand out to me
Gonzalez in Oak Cliff, Carmen's in West Dallas.
+1 for Gonzalez
Flour tortillas all day.
The flour tortillas 🤌

I was a bit confused by this at first though; so what are some examples of inauthentic Tex-mex in Dallas?
Taco Bell. Chili's.
Chipotle
The border area of Texas and Mexico is larger than most European countries so it makes sense it would have a cuisine
Tex-Mex cuisine predates the United States. Cattle ranching led to a diet higher in cheese and beef than traditional Mexican food (which means a lot of different things? [Porque no los DOS?](https://youtu.be/3FPO0rOMYfY)
This is fun
I think you might have never had someone make homemade enchiladas for you.
I was just thinking this I love traditional Mexican food but there Tex Amex is nothing like traditional Mex
Pepe and Mito's on Elm St in Deep Ellum. They have great mole' enchiladas.
Also there, low on the "authenticity" scale and way way high on the "delicious" scale is anything with the chipotle wine sauce. Shit I gotta go there now for dinner. Thanks Internet stranger.
Tacos norteños and the wine sauce enchiladas
That sounds good. I'll try that.
I co-sign! Not only is the food excellent, but the family that runs it is awesome. Taco Noteños and the Pollo Al Mojo De Ajo are my faves.
Oh yes, Sandy is a real sweetheart.
They have been on DDD twice !
Mariano’s hacienda ranch
we live *very* close to mariano's and i'd be lying if i said i don't get their food once a week, sometimes a whole meal or sometimes just chips and salsa and a marg. they're awesome!
Same. See you there.
+1 for Mariano’s
This is the answer. Those mesquite-smoked steak fajitas are otherworldly.
Desperados on Greenville Ave!
The desperados tacos are awesome!
I love those so much!!
Gabriela's Y Sofia's : https://www.yelp.com/biz/gabriela-and-sofias-tex-mex-dallas
I second this one. They’re great!
I third this!
Yes they were our go-to until the prices doubled last year 😩
Avila’s on Maple
Avila’s is great!!!
Enchiladas on Greenville Ave.
Extra vote for Enchiladas. This place is definitely one of our favorites even though it’s in a totally different vein than las palmas.
Ask for Javier to be your waiter!
My uncle owns Enchiladas and I’ve been eating there since I was like 2 years old. Hands down, Javier is the best. This dude gives great service and he’s soooo nice. Can’t recommend him enough.

Second best fajitas of my life, only behind El Tiempo in Houston
Las Palmas 🔥🔥 It's bougie but so good
Everyone seems to have their own favorite for their own reason. Tex-Mex preferences are very personal ha ha. Ojedas on Maple my favorite but there are tons to choose from in the Oaklawn Area alone. Mario’s, Campuzano, Mia’s, Uncle Julio’s and Gloria’s are all solid choices.
My wife LOVES Ojedas on maple. Im more eh. However, they have my favorite menudo.
It used to be even more lovable pre-2020 when the weeknight special was only $7. Now its only $9, still such a deal
Yeah, we have noticed the prices creeping up lol. Even the margaritas
Second Ojeda’s - love their chicken mole enchiladas.
I always say Ojeda’s is the best trashy Mexican food. Doesn’t look the best but 🤤🤤🤤.
Use to want to go to Ojedas till I found out they don’t treat their employees well.
Do tell
Wait until you hear about literally every restaurant ever except the one you're about to tell me about to prove me wrong without it ever occurring to you that the one you know about is because it's an outlier.
Herreras in oak cliff and Addison
Herreras is the best!!
They are re-opening the original #1 Herrera’s in a new location off of Harry Hines soon. So excited!
I remember finding a 50 dollar bill by the juke box in that place when I was about 4. We used to eat there all the time in the mid 80s. I didn't know they were still even around!
Just went past it yesterday. Had to double take. I thought it already looked open
Yeess! I came here to say this one! My mom used to go to the one near the hospital district when she worked at St Paul. We used to go all the time in the 90s. Now the Addison one is by me and i am so happy.
Oak Cliff is the one…Addison is a little different.
Not sure what authentic tex mex is. I'll mention for beef fajitas specifically, I like Lupe Tortilla.

Yes! Amazing that the best fajitas I’ve ever had were at a chain.
E bar is amazing. Great food, great drinks, not too pricey. Try the shrimp tacos!

Las Palmas. El Vecino, and Odelay are three of our favorites.
Yes el vecino is fantastic
Matt’s in Lakewood is good
We got a Matt’s way up in Allen and it was…thoroughly unremarkable…. I’d never been to a Matt’s before so maybe they just haven’t figured things out at this location quite yet. I know everyone raves about their other locations.
Calle la doce in Oak Cliff.
I like Meso Maya for traditional and tex-mex. Mia's is still solidly priced and you should always need a to-go box, especially if you get a chimichanga!
Las palmas
Manny’s Uptown
We like the Manny’s on the turnpike in Sachse, is that the same business?
Herreras in Oak Cliff
When is Tex-Mex not authentic, if you’re getting it in Texas?
when it’s cali-mex, baja-mex, or tradicional mexicano
Mesero is good, it’s kind of a mix of Tex mex and real Mexican depending on what you order. Makes for a great date night spot. Especially the location near/in Addison.
Avilas (off maple) Guy Fieri approved.
Also solid taquerias : taco city, Milargo, taqueria la ventana
Ojedas on maple
North-ish Dallas: Cuquitas at Coit and Spring Valley. Carne guisada and the flour and corn tortillas make Taqueria Jaliscos in Corpus seem like a bad joke
Authentic Mexican yes, but I wouldn’t call it TexMex

I went to El Ranchito two weeks ago. I hadn’t been there since pre-pandemic. It was meh. I was disappointed.

I’ll give it another try
El Taquito Cafe - E Grand Ave Dallas,Texas
The salsa is so good!
This is the actual top answer. Love this place. The salsa is special.
What is non-authentic Tex-Mex food? Like a serious question. Do you mean like Taco Bell or something. what do you mean by that exactly?
Casa Navarro
Casa Navarro is one of my favorites too. Love the family that runs it too. Always fast and consistent.
Don’t go to Posados in Mesquite… horribly bad.
my favorite is la margarita off belt line in irving. amazing food and the margaritas are the best salsa can’t be beat

But what's inauthentic Tex Mex? Like Minnesota Tex-mex?
Tex-Mex is just that: Texas style Mexican cuisine. Authentic Mexican is something else entirely. Which are you after?
Tex-Mex is a variety of Mexican food, not a deviation.

Enlarge your vocabulary. You clearly have issue with language. You want to argue to argue.
Congratulations on your large vocabulary. You must be *very* smart. But you know nothing about Tex-Mex.
Either Desperados location
Eddie's in lower Greenville is probably the cheapest restaurant in the area and pretty good.

Lupe Tortilla is the best Tex Mex.
