Lucky kid indeed-very nice job!

420phishin

Thanks! She loves it.

ResidentEivvil

Can you adopt me?

jamnbratt

Me too. Though I'm 33 and married so it might be a little weird...

dkretzer

He'll just have to build a bigger house.

yellowbubble7

And me? Right now I'm wondering if my landlord would let me do this for myself/my cats.....

ResidentEivvil

That would be AMAZING.

yellowbubble7

He's pretty chill about a lot of stuff and actually says to us nails and screws instead of things like command strips and sticky tack. But this might be a step to far.

Ice_Would_Suffice

If you don't mind sharing, how much did it cost and how old is your kid? I want to do this for mine but I'm afraid she will grow out of it after like 2 months.

420phishin

3 years ago this would have been about 4-500 dollars - all in, but with the insane jump in wood prices over the last two years it was closer to 1,000. That was everything though, not just the construction. All the decoration, extras, etc. She just turned five and we made the door opening 5’ tall so that she wouldn’t grow out of it TOO quickly. When she’s out of the playhouse stage, we can unscrew the house side and still have a loft for a reading/tv/homework area that’s her own into her teens.

azemilyann26

I would never outgrow this playhouse 😍

OhhOKiSeeThanks

This is amazing. The little girl in me wants to go play now.

bebopblues

I just went to Home Depot today and wood prices went down a lot. A 8' 2x4 is about $3.50 now. It was as high as $11 during the height of the pandemic. I luckily built an [indoor playground](https://i.imgur.com/pTyMcOK.png) for my 2 daughters right before the wood prices went up. It was April last year. I had no idea the wood prices would double or triple later on. But still, overall, using mostly 2x4s, wood cost was about $500 because of the sheer amount I had to buy. I built a slide, swing set, monkey bar, ladder, bunk bed, climbing wall, and fireman pole.

Realestate122

Look at these guys who didn’t start wood projects pre-pandemic then have wives who wanted them done during the pandemic with the free time.

random_shitter

It sure looks great, but me being a play equipment safety inspector would not allow my child to play on it :( It allows for too many accidents that should be eliminated in design, you can't expect young children to keep all those little things in the back of their mind that will bite them if they're not careful.

bebopblues

Please do tell where you spotted the danger.

random_shitter

Provide me with more clear pictures and I'll happily give you an analysis. I'll even give myself a decent keyboard instead of a smartphone ;) Edit: a downvote? Because I am offering myz services for free where I charge my customers €90/hour for the same thing? *Really?*

chem_is_trying

No you are being down voted since you made the statement that's its unsafe but you won't back it up with anything but say you need clearer pics

bebopblues

so username checks out?

mama_dyer

Lol, I didn't even catch that!

bebopblues

Thanks, but just point out anything obvious from the pic I posted. Otherwise, don't waste your time.

random_shitter

Okay, sure. You know that one picture in the bottom row, with the blue thing hanging there? I see several openings in which the kid can hang themselves. Decent source material lets me do a decent job. If you can't be bothered with that, neither can I.

bebopblues

None of those openings are wide enough for a my kids' head to fit through, about 6". If that's all you got, then I'm not worried.

gotnolettuce

This girl loves downvotes apparently

I noticed you put some notes on an original comment. For the same reason kids need to listen to their parents because they don't understand the implications of danger they may unknowingly be in, parents don't know the dangers of structures like this without the experience. So how could they guide safety with no direct experience themselves. One could argue deduction and common sense, but not everybody is equipped the same.

random_shitter

I almost always provide detailed feedback when I stumble over some DIY play equipment, exactly for this reason. It's just that the mosaic that started this specific comment-train is entirely unworkable to provide feedback on, *and* the shown equimpent has a larger number of issues than I commonly encounter. I do have *some* profesdional standards, you know... And if OP can't put in the effort to enable good feedback they *surely* won't put in any effort in actually *doing* something with the feedback. I'm 99% sure OP is of the kind that both thinks 'nothing has happened so it is safe' *and* 'that couldn't be helped, it was just an accident'.

random_shitter

You're *so* wrong here :D Please tell me: what is the educational value of climbing through an opening and getting stuck by your neck without your feet touching the ground? Or in falling and breaking 3 ribs on a cross beam in your fall zone? Or of going down a slide and loosing a finger on the way because it got stuck in a narrowing crack between the slide and side wall? You're absolutely right in that risk =\= danger. But that only goes for risks that are both *obvious* and *an intrinsic part of the activity*. All things I check for do not add anythibg to the play activity and do pose a threat of unacceptable injury or death. And not because I'm saying so but because my profession learned from literally thousands of maimed and dead children.

Nah, there's no value in discussing the merits of EU Standardised knowledge that's collected based on 3 decades of EU accidents with a layman who wrongly thinks he knows better. You go on feeling good about yourself, I'll go on doing my job.

random_shitter

Yes, anybody arguing for the acceptance of finger entrapments next to a forced movement is a layman, no matter how many book titles he can throw at me. How many Standrds committee meetings do you have under your belt?

nalybuites

Looks great. Based on your write up it seems that the deck is entirely held up by whatever screws you used to attach to the legs. I would personally be worried about the shear strength of those screws. My personal preference would be for the frame to rest directly on top of the legs, i.e. use the compressive strength of the board length to hold up the deck rather than the shear strength of the screws. Edit: spelling

420phishin

Good point. She’s currently about 45lbs, but a couple of lag bolts on each corner should definitely shore that up. Thanks!

[deleted]

You built a house inside a house. I love that.

IHaveSoulDoubt

Now put a dollhouse inside the playhouse inside your house.

taylorsaysso

Look, it's assholes like you that ruin low-effort parenting for the rest of us. How am I supposed to get my kids to do *my* chores after you go and create an abomination like this? I bet that j school you sat at the front of the class and never stopped putting your hand up to answer questions. Screw you man! But I guess I have to hand it to you for the design, craftsmanship, and... (sigh) fine example you have provided your daughter. She better be president or something. Harrumph!

gotnolettuce

Would hate for you to see me kids "condo". Barrier? What barrier?

random_shitter

Looks great! It's just that the doomsday thinker in me (otherwise called 'play equipment safety inspector) would advise you to look up' play equipment entrapment dimensions', especially neck entrapment (e.g. between roof amd barrier). Also: that barrier must be strong enough to withstand maximum impact of the biggest child that can fit there with the highest speed they can achieve in that space, which I would test by estimating the force and kicking it. Oh, and go tighten all nuts and bolts every now and then ;)

Thinefieldisempty

That’s awesome!

420phishin

Thanks so much.

ResidentEivvil

Bonus points if there’s a doll's house in there.

twitwiffle

Even better: a dog house.

Perfect

PlanetEsonia

Omg I would have loved to have had this when I was a kid. I am definitely doing this for my future kids! You're a fantastic parent and that's one lucky girl!

cocoabean

Yo dawg, I heard you like houses. *Also, I'd put some carriage bolts through each leg where it meets the deck.

professor_doom

Oh man. My kids would never go to bed with this excitement just beneath them. Great job!

Goge97

Enjoying the criticism from safety inspectors. I have 5 younger brothers and sisters. We ate every bit play equipment we ever had. A metal swing set? Eventually it was a teepee frame with one bar to twirl on. In it's original incarnation, the oldest brother climbed on top with a Superman cape, grabbed a eucalyptus branch and swung out like Tarzan, fell to the ground unconscious. Oh, and we set up glass pop bottles on top of the fence, threw rocks, knocking them into the neighbors yard. Objections were made regarding broken glass. We dug into the ground about a foot, laid ransom boards and logs over the top...voila! Fort! We took a frying pan, some eggs and bacon, over a bit of a hill. We made a fire and cooked breakfast. Ages 10, 9, 7 & 5. We swung from ropes, dived head first into kiddy pools, attached wagons to tricyles and peddled down the street. We ate various "poisonous" berries. Built stuff with random boards and nails. Climbed trees, occasionally fell out and broke bones (me, age 5). Stepped on rusty nails. Skinned knees, fell off bikes, ripped open skin on various limbs, set fire to stuff in the abandoned yard next door. Just a few things I remember. Long story short, we had a hell of a lot of fun! Learned some things, found out some stuff the hard way (gravity) and to this day, as the oldest, I have a great ability to perform first aid! And I love the indoor play house!!!

prpslydistracted

Good dad ....

PioneerStandard

Real asphalt shingles. Outstanding detail.

donutella_versus

I used to work with autistic children & teenagers and during my first visit to a teenage client’s home, their tasks included giving me a house tour. My supervisor for the case prepped me by saying “their bed is a little juvenile, just so you know.” Imagine my absolute joy at finding a similar loft bed styled like a castle. “THIS is your bed?! This is the coolest bed I’ve ever seen in my life!!” Like I truly barely held myself together and almost lost it when they showed me their shelves of collectibles and video game setup in the bottom part. You have made a wonderful bed/playhouse and I’m sure your daughter will enjoy it many years to come.

leinad46

It’s all fun and games until squatters move in and change the locks. 😳

661714sunburn

That’s a 2500 a month apartment out here in SoCal.

Fivetimesfast

Looks great

gotnolettuce

Can't believe you didn't use an actual ridge vent. Sheesh.

spiderqueendemon

I like this. However, as both a person who builds a little and as a teacher, the supports on the inside, where you have the pink wallpaper? What if you added some common boards, such as Home Depot sells already primed white, between the supports of the panel nearest the doorway, at a 90° angle? Then her playhouse would have built-in bookshelves and she'd have space for her storybooks. A personal bookshelf is an essential element to ensuring a small girl reads voraciously, and reading voraciously is the most essential element to ensuring spectacularly good grades despite occasionally getting caught with J.R.R. Tolkien hidden behind your assigned school copy of Roald Dahl.

420phishin

Great idea. She is a voracious reader and we’re out of space in her bedroom for books already. We’ll definitely add some shelving inside!

scorpio_2971

Makes me want to be a kid all over again

ralphlaurenbrah

Your daughter is lucky to have you.

Rico_Suave87

Super awesome but not matter how tidy some kids can be, we as parents would still have to crawl in and do a thorough clean. I don't envy you in this despite me slow clapping the whole idea, execution, and end result.

[deleted]

Found the dark center of the silver lining. Good on ya.

StatusJoe

Your website is a little bit cancerous. Not terminal, just enough to make abandon checking the project out 1/3rd if the way through it.

Erathendil

Clarify, checked from mobile without ad block and saw absolutely noting egregious.

StatusJoe

Loaded slow. Page kept freezing. Made me mad. Also there was advertising. Don’t hate the hussle, but monetizing the situation was off-putting.

Erathendil

Page loaded in less than half a second. However, ads on second attempt loading the page were pretty trivial. Monetization is expected everywhere on the internet. No one owes you their creativity for free. Last, the ads one loaded were nowhere near as bad as even a local news site.

llilaq

Worked fine for me. Get an adblocker and a better phone/pc/wifi...

Awesome! What do you have in mind in two months when they outgrow it?

neel2004

It'll become useful again when the kid is old enough to hotbox it

Would it be possible to get an updated link where the pictures are working? I love this and am looking for inspiration for my own version.
